The Canadian Mosaic Project Comes To Mission!

Since the beginning of the Canadian Mosaic Project on October 1st, 2008, 16,040 portraits from every province and territory in Canada have been created by photojournalist, Tim Van Horn. Every year until 2017, Tim Van Horn will traverse the Canadian cultural landscape, interviewing and photographing thousands of Canadians. Each one of us has a story to tell and to share. The Canadian Mosaic project brings our unique, interconnected stories together into one spell-binding visual. During the month of January Tim was in Mission taking photos. We’re very privileged that Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the surrounding area will be included in this fanastic project. The Canadian Mosaic project’s mission is to create an astonishing 36,000 portraits. This number represents a seemingly miniscule .1% of the population of Canada but it will be the most comprehensive portrait ever created on the Canadian people. On Canada Day in 2017, for Canada’s 150th birthday, a larger-than-life 30x100 foot &DQDGLDQ à DJ PRVDLF ZLOO EH XQYHLOHG DW D PDMRU &DQDGLDQ PXVHXP This living tapestry of life, will play an instrumental role to bring together the people of Canada. How Eggstraordinary! A Look at Easter Traditions Although the Easter weekend is the principal religious feast of the Christian year, most of its traditions have no basis in Christianity at all. In fact, the Jewish festival of Passover is closely linked to Easter by dates and symbolism. Passover, also known as Pesach, was celebrated long before the birth of Jesus. Before Easter was used as a name for this holiday, early Christians celebrated ‘Pascha’, a word derived from Pesach. The word ‘Easter’ comes from an AngloSaxon fertility goddess called Eostre, who was associated with spring and new beginnings. Both Easter and Passover centre around re-birth and bond neatly with the Anglo-Saxon festival of ‘Eostremonath’ – Eostre’s month. Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, are linked to Passover. Originally they were unleavened bread, an important Passover food. Nowadays, they are more palatably leavened and marked with a cross to serve as a reminder of the crucifixion.

But where does the tradition of eating chocolate eggs come from? In the times of Eostre, eggs were given as gifts to celebrate the end of winter and as a symbol of new life. And need I mention the fertility characteristic of an egg? A traditional dish at a Passover meal is Beitzah, a hardboiled egg to represent life. All this evolved into Christians decorating the shells with colourful patterns and then moved onto our familiar, delicious chocolate Easter eggs. Well, that’s the eggs worked out. But an Easter Bunny? A rabbit that lays eggs! Not to mention the need for these eggs to be hunted for and rolled down a hill. Well, the origin of the rabbit isn’t too hard to decipher. We go back to the goddess Eostre again. Her sacred animal was the hare. Rabbits are similar to hares and rather more common. Therefore the two creatures became interchangeable. And of course rabbits are well-known for their prolificacy… so I’m afraid we’re back to fertility symbolism again. The Easter Bunny and egg hunts seem to have started in Germany in the 16th century. made nests in the garden and, if they were good, the Easter Bunny would leave them coloured hard-boiled eggs to find the next morning. This tradition travelled to America with early German settlers but was substituted with chocolate eggs and a more interesting egg hunt. Egg rolling on Easter Monday is a strange old custom, that is said to represent the rolling away of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb. Also known as Pace-Egging, derived from the word Pesach, it has been fun for centuries, but nobody is sure why. Perhaps it originated as a way of getting everyone out of the house for some much-needed exercise after a long weekend of feasting? Suki North

This handsome, active, adolescent was left behind when his owner moved away and didn’t take him. Twix loves to play and is very inquisitive but will require an experienced owner who can teach him some manners. He would be best with older children as sometimes he doesn’t know his own strength. SPUDS YOU’LL LIKE!

The humble potato is a cheap and tasty vegetable. Here are some recipes where the potato takes centre stage... Potato, Sausage & Bean Bake This recipe is a big hit with kids, it’s easy and can be customised to your families tastes. 2.2 lbs new potatoes 1 onion - sliced 8 sausages - cooked and sliced 2 x 400g tins baked beans 150g grated cheese chilli sauce & worcestershire sauce (optional) large ovenproof dish Method Heat the oven to 200°C. Cook the potatoes until tender. Be careful not to overcook. Slice the potatoes and layer half over the bottom of the dish. Top with half the onion, 1 tin of beans, a third of the cheese, half the sausages and the sauces if you are using. Then add the next layer of potatoes, beans, onions, sausages and top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 20 mins.

Warm Potato Salad This recipe serves two greedy adults! 1.1 lbs of new potatoes UDVKHUV VWUHDN\ EDFRQ 4 spring onions - sliced 6 radishes - sliced FKHUU\ WRPDWRHV bag of salad leaves 1 avocado - halved and cubed vinaigrette dressing (olive oil & lemon juice) Method Boil the potatoes in their skins until cooked. Meanwhile prepare the salad on two plates.In a non stick pan cook the bacon pieces. When starting to crisp, tip in the cooked potatoes and fry for a few minutes. Divide between the two plates - drizzle with dressing and season to taste.

Spicy Spuds Adapted from a recipe by Madhur Jaffrey these potatoes are delicious. There are a lot of ingredients but they’re worth it! 5-6 red skinned potatoes 59 ml vegetable oil LQFK JLQJHU SHHOHG ¿QHO\ FKRSSHG UHG FKLOOLHV ¿QHO\ FKRSSHG 10 ml black mustard seeds 10 ml cumin seeds 10 ml ground coriander 5 ml turmeric 5 ml chilli powder (optional) 5 ml lemon juice 10 ml garam masala salt

Boil the potatoes in their skins until soft. Drain, cool, peel and break into small pieces. Meanwhile in a non-stick pan heat the oil on a medium heat. Once hot, add the mustard & cumin seeds. When the seeds begin to pop add the ginger, chillies, coriander, turmeric and chilli powder. Stir until the ginger starts to colour then add the spuds and stir really well to coat them all with the spices. Sprinkle over the lemon juice, garam masala & salt and fry until the spuds start to crisp. Turn regularly and serve once they are nice and browned. I like mine extra crispy. Cash Mob Mob’s Mission! So what is a Cash Mob? It’s an easy concept… a bunch of people get together and each spends $20 in a local store. They don’t necessary know each other. A time, date and place are announced and participants show up and join in. Mission’s first Cash Mob was a great success with 25+ people “mobbing” Murdoch’s Bookstore and then going for coffee at the Sweet Spot Cafe. The January 26th event was the first of what we hope will be many “grassroots” led Cash Mobs in Mission. In addition to supporting local businesses, Cash Mobs are fun social events where you can visit with friends and meet others who care about our local economy.

From 10am – Noon every Tuesday, a health clinic will operate out of the Seniors Activity Centre located at 10th and Taulbut which will provide an opportunity for weekly blood pressure checks, height and weight measurements as well as participation in workshops and presentations on health issues for seniors. The weekly clinics will also provide an opportunity for seniors to meet and socialize with others in a friendly environment. There is also interesting speakers on various subjects like depression, hearing, pharmacy and many more pertaining to senior’s in the future.

The Rev. Paul Bowie has been in ministry for 20 years, most recently in Burnaby. Paul, his wife Juliette and family are now in Mission. They are looking forward to becoming part of our community, once their boxes are unpacked! All Saints church is in Downtown Mission, one block from where the first church was started in 1901. The Parish vision states that “individuals are respected, feel safe to worship ...” and Paul’s theology reflects those values. As Paul and our church family get to know each other, we will continue to welcome all and reach out to help others.
