Recipes from The Blackberry Kitchen

` Chocolate Pots de Creme Serves 6 Pronounced poh de krem or pot filled with chocolate

Ingredients: 12 ounces of semi sweet chocolate Pinch of salt 1\4 cup white sugar 3 large eggs 2 cups whipping cream 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions: 1) In a food processor bowl, combine chocolate, salt, sugar and eggs. 2) Pulse the mixture until combined, it may look granular and curdled but that’s alright. 3) Heat the cream until it simmers and then add it slowly to chocolate mixture while pulsing. 4) Scrape bowl, add vanilla then pulse again until the mixture becomes smooth textured.

5) Pour mixture into small cups or ramekins, cover with plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator. 6) When ready to serve, garnish with whipped cream and fresh berries.

Here is a list of things you can do or think about to make that season go more smoothly! • If you are going to make charitable donations, do it early and keep all of the tax receipts in one place. Remember only donations to registered charities in Canada are eligible. • If you moved during the year, make sure that Canada Revenue, your employer, your bank and investment broker have your up to date address. Also make sure you save all of the receipts for the cost of the move and it may be deductible in certain circumstances. • If you are a student or have a student in your family make sure that they get their T2202A from their school, plus if you had costs to move to the school these may be deductible in certain circumstances. • Make your RRSP contributions early in December so that you are not waiting for your slips in April.

JEFF KRAHN of CEA Innovations Corp. recently graduated from the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program (AVAP) through the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec). Acting as the newest agri-tech and technology hub for the Fraser Valley, SRCTec hosts this program to help those with the next big idea in agriculture. Through training, mentorship, offering access to capital and networking opportunities, the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program which is funded through the Ministry of Agriculture and the BC Innovation Council has given close to 25 new “ventures” an opportunity to succeed in the agri-tech business world.

Mission Christmas Bureau needs your help!

ast year the Mission Christmas Bureau helped more than 660 households have a little happier holiday season. Our community has a large number of people who are on a limited or very low income and struggle every day to meet even the most basic needs.

The Christmas season brings a particularly difficult time for these families as it is simply another occasion with too little to eat and no resources for gifts to share with their children or any of the little things that make the holidays merry. While the rest of us enjoy our bounty and celebrate with all the usual trimmings, these families and their children can only imagine such joy. The Christmas Bureau has helped these families in the past, but only with the help of our community. There is so much satisfaction and fulfilment in helping these families each year for those who give so selflessly. The smiles, hugs and even tears that are often shed when these families receive their hampers are perhaps some of the best gifts of all. Each year one or two of our donors tell us that they were once recipients of the hampers and now that they are able they want to give where once they received. It is truly the season when giving is far better than receiving, and The Mission Christmas Bureau can certainly use your help. Here are some ways you can help your neighbors in need this Christmas… • Donate - cash, non-perishable food items, new, unwrapped gifts for children (toys) and teens (gift cards), baby items including baby food, diapers, and formula

Mission/Oyama Cultural Exchange 2016 The Mission International Cultural Association (MICA) is a volunteer organization dedicated to continuing and growing cultural relations with Oyama, Japan. MICA was founded in 2010 with the intent to create a group comparable to the Oyama International Friendship Association (OIFA): a community group dedicated to maintaining the cultural exchange focus of civic sister city relationships. Among others, MICA’s activities include having coordinated tsunami relief fundraising in 2011, organized 2013 Oyama/Mission Sister City Exchange with fantastic support from Mission Chamber of Commerce and community members, and facilitates annual Oyama to Mission Student Exchange. The District of Mission signed a sister city relationship agreement with Oyama-cho, Shizuoka, Japan in 1996. Community leaders from Oyama initiated discussions with Mayor Randy Hawes as they felt that the similarities between the two communities warranted a special relationship; both communities are considered small to medium sized towns, have similar proximity to a major urban centre, and share geographic elements with major rivers and large mountain views. The relationship has developed into one of sharing cultural experiences and developing lifelong friendships through a series of 9 delegate visits with each delegation consisting of 20 to 30 community leaders and residents. Members of the Oyama International Friendship Association have extended an invitation to the members of the Mission International Cultural Association to visit Oyama in October of 2016. The basis of the visit will be to attend and participate in the Oyama Cultural Festival on October 15th, 2016. The Mission/Oyama Cultural Exchange is an opportunity for citizens of Mission to share their experience and culture with citizens of Oyama. The delegation will likely be a 7 - 10 day stay in Oyama and will work via a “billeting� system of accommodation, where participants stay with a family in Oyama for the duration of the exchange. OIFA organizes tours of the community and surrounding locations, and Mission citizens participate in activities intended to demonstrate aspects of Japanese culture. Outside of coordinated events, participants may also engage with their host family for tours of local points of interest or other activities. This exchange is open to any citizen of Mission who is over 18 years of age (or receives special permission from MICA and OIFA). Exchange participants are required to pay their own transportation costs to Japan (this will be coordinated with a travel agency instead of each participant organizing their own transportation). Also, participants will be expected to manage their own spending money (a good lower limit to expect is Y5000/day, or approximately $50CDN/day). Participants will also need to participate in a number of preparation meetings with MICA prior to the exchange. These meetings are expected to begin in April 2016, and will likely increase in frequency as we get closer to the exchange. When in Oyama, participants will need to engage in cultural exchange events, which will include tours, cultural demonstrations and activities, and performances (both by Oyama and Mission citizens). Above all, participants must remember that they are guests of OIFA and Oyama, and are representatives of Mission in every aspect.
