SPICE up your life LOW FAT DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN BORING. HERE ARE THREE VERY LOW FAT RECIPES - PACKED FULL OF FLAVOUR. HEALTHY EATING HAS NEVER BEEN SO MUCH FUN!!! Chicken Curry
Spicy Prawn Noodles egg noodles 2.5 ml sesame oil 1 fresh red chilli - chopped 5 mls fresh ginger - grated 2 cloves garlic - crushed 1 red onion - halved & sliced 4 spring onions - chopped 1/2 lb king prawns - cooked beansprouts 15 ml - lime juice 15 ml - soy sauce 15 ml - sweet chilli sauce 50ml chinese rice wine/sherry Fresh coriander
method
Heat a wok or l a r g e non-stick pan, add sesame oil. Once hot add chilli, garlic & ginger. Fry for 1 minute. Then add red onion & spring onions. Fry for 4 minutes. Finally add prawns, beansprouts, lime juice, soy and chilli sauce, noodles and rice wine/sherry. Stir until heated through. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and serve.
1lb chicken - cubed 2 onions 15 ml tomato puree 10 ml curry powder 10 ml ground cumin 10 ml ground coriander 2 cans chopped tomatoes 2 chopped chillies 2 cloves garlic 2” fresh ginger Fresh cilantro Water, salt
method
Whiz the onion, ginger & garlic in a blender or food processor then add to a non-stick pan and dry fry until the onions are soft, add a bit of water to prevent sticking. Add the puree and spices - stir for 3 mins to prevent sticking. Add chicken and stir fry until sealed. Add chillies & tomatoes. Simmer for 15 mins. Add water if too thick. Season with salt to taste. Add fresh cilantro and serve with rice.
Spicy Lentils
1/2 lb split red lentils RQLRQV ¿QHO\ FKRSSHG 3 carrots - small dice 15 ml fresh ginger - grated 2 cloves garlic - chopped PO FKLOOL ÀDNHV RU SRZGHU 5 ml black mustard seeds 5 ml ground cumin 5 ml turmeric 5 ml ground coriander 5 ml paprika 950 ml vegetable stock Fresh coriander Salt & pepper
method Add the mustard seeds to a warm pan; once they start popping add all spices and stir for a few seconds - then add the ginger, garlic, onions, carrots & stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins then add lentils; simmer for another 30 mins until veggies are soft & lentils cooked. Season to taste. Garnish with cilantro. Delicious with nan bread.

But shortly after their arrival, a young man is found brutally murdered in the delphinium patch. Riot of Reading breaks out in Mission Mission is ready to celebrate Family Literacy Day with the 11th Annual Riot of Reading Solutions Saturday, January 26th from 11 - 3 at Ecole Mission Central, 7466 Welton St. Family Literacy Day reminds us of the joys of taking time to read together. Reading encourages brain development, increases a child’s vocabulary and awareness of the world. And besides – it is fun. Riotously fun! The Riot of Reading Solutions will celebrate this love of reading with free entertainment including, fabulous stories, facepainting, balloon animals and a rousing magic show called I Love to Read with the well known and popular Norden the Magician. There will also be wandering visits from some favourite storybook characters such as Clifford the Big Red Dog and Geronimo Stilton, the Detective Mouse. Make sure to stay for free pizza and cake! Meet and connect with many of the people in Mission who work with families and find out about some of the fantastic programs and opportunities in our community. Mission Historical Society’s 11th Annual Heritage Week Celebrations February 16 - 24th, 2013 On February 16, the Mission Museum and Mission Community Archives are opening a new exhibit titled This Is Home as part of local heritage week celebrations. Featuring artifacts, photographs, maps, drawings and documents. The exhibits will narrate the fascinating development of Mission’s neighbourhoods and districts from earlier eras, including: Silverdale, Stave Falls, Cedar Valley, Mission Junction, Hatzic, and Deroche.

Get Up and Go! The Get Up & Go! program is a collaboration with the Fraser Health Falls and Injury Prevention and Osteofit. It provides an entry level exercise program for seniors with balance and mobility impairment who would otherwise be unable to attend a community based exercise class. It is a safe exercise program specially designed to improve strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability independence and quality of life. Subsidy for this program may be available through a referral from the Fraser Health Fall and Injury Prevention Program. Five Best Diet Changes A new year - a new start. How can you start improving your diet and your chances of leading a healthier lifestyle? First – eat breakfast! After many hours without food our bodies need refuelling to bring the blood sugar back up and ensure the brain and muscles are functioning properly. Eating breakfast aids concentration and creates energy. Drink more water We lose on average 2-4 litres of water a day, which needs to be replaced. Current advice is to drink 6-8 glasses daily to ensure that our brain, blood and muscles are able to function at their best. Eat more fruit and vegetables Their vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, whilst antioxidants fight cancer and disease, and fibre cleanses the gut. We should eat five portions per day. Eat less red meat Reduce the risk of bowel and other cancers. Health experts suggest 500g per week (the equivalent of one steak, one pork chop, 2 sausages and a portion of Bolognese sauce) or 70g per day (three rashes of bacon). Eat more consciously Take time to really taste and savour the food in your mouth. Be aware of the textures and flavours - and chances are you will enjoy your food more whilst eating less of it! Have You Seen The New Mission â&#x20AC;&#x153;Riseâ&#x20AC;? Youth Mural? About 10 years ago, Doug Cariou from Cyrus Art and Barry McLeod from Mission Youth Unlimited began to talk about the possibility of involving youth in the creation of a wall mural. The conversation ďŹ nally became a reality in the fall of 2012 with the creation of the Mission RISE Youth Mural. A District of Mission 120th anniversary grant, along with the support of numerous businesses, enabled us to complete this project. The mural portrays 6 young people from Mission involved in activities that they excel at: Jason Page - BMXer, Wesley McLeod - Junior Hockey Goalie, Carly Rae Jepsen - Singer/Songwriter, Natalie Charlton Stave Falls Scottish Dancer, Amanda ShefďŹ eld - F. V. A. D. Ballet Dancer & Josiah Cariou - Skateboarder 11 Mission youth helped with the painting: Devan Locke, Videographer - Ruth Cariou, Cameron McLeod, Hailly Martin, Raz Boca, Trevor Bentley, Cecil Smith Williams, Zach Cariou, Turia McLean Smith, Ronald Smith Williams, Aisha Smith. The mural is located in the parking lot of the Eleniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant on N. Railway in Downtown Mission. A video showing a time lapse of the mural painting is available on www.whatsonmission.ca. Post Cards of the mural will also be available in local stores.
