DON’T SCREW UP THIS SPRING, NAIL IT! Winter is wrapping up, and Spring is just around the corner! Get a kickstart on Spring with our help. Whether it be Spring Cleaning, starting up your gardening, or getting a whole new project underway, here are some ideas to make the best use of these clearer days. Feeling a little disorganized? Get back on track with some Spring Cleaning. Organization is the key to creating useful storage space throughout the house, be it for the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen or the garage. Even the smallest corners of the home can be transformed into functional storage spaces that blend with the surrounding style and decor. Create a whole new space in that closet with a little work! The modern closet has come of age. With the range of styles and storage solutions available, closets have become prominent features of a well-designed home. Take note: no more excuses for neglecting your closets! This month’s featured product is a Bostitch Combo Pack - 2 Nail Guns + Air Compressor for $339.00. Perfect for small interior jobs, or those daunting outdoor tasks you’ve been meaning to tackle. Get your gardening done right! We have a wide variety of gardening tools to choose from. Paramount are your needs and how often you plan to use a particular tool. Tool size, weight and comfort are all important factors to consider. Tools should be appropriate to the user’s height, gardening experience, age and tasks to be performed. Ergonomic tools are recommended for those who garden several hours per week, senior gardeners and people who are prone to back problems or discomfort in their arms and wrists. Come on in to Rona and talk to one of informative experts for all your home and garden needs.

Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays. Monday to Friday

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Happy Spring! As the temperatures slowly rise and the buds start to peek out, Spring brings feelings of renewal and rebirth. There’s a sense of anticipation and hope as flowers bloom and grow all around us. There is also a sense of anticipation and hope as a plan for revitalization is set for Downtown Mission. Beyond the renewed sidewalks and renovations of the Downtown Core, we also need to rethink our spending habits and perspectives. As a business owner in Mission, the decision involves more just the store front and the financial investment. Many business owners bring their children, spouses or parents to live in Mission as well. And as a result, they are also investing in Mission’s education, sports organizations, lifetime learning programs, arts and music development; and are contributing to community welfare. So, the next time you decide to shop or eat locally, know that you’re not only supporting the business, but also the blossoming of the community of Mission.

Mission Hospice Society BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Individual/Family One on One Our trained Bereavement Coordinator provides short term individual and family support to anyone who needs the support. Services are designed to meet the individual’s specific needs and we help people of all ages. We also make referrals to specialized professionals, if further support is needed. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS Memorial Services We host a memorial services once a year to remember your loved ones. Please contact Nathalie Millar for more information and dates. Pathways, Adults Support Group It’s not easy to understand or accept the death of someone we love. A grief support group is a group of people who come together to help each other through their grief journey. Some of the benefits of attending can include connecting with others who have gone through similar situations, associating with people who will listen without judgement, new ideas to help you cope and heal, time to share memories of the person who passed, and understanding what responses are natural and normal during grieving Women's Support Group The Mission Hospice Society hosts an ongoing weekly widow’s support group called Tea and Company, which is a weekly support group for women who have lost a spouse. This program runs Thursday at 10am in the resource room of the Mission Hospice Society. Circle of Friends, Children’s Grief Support Group This group is aimed at helping children deal with their grief and how to channel their grief in a positive way through crafts and sharing they learn to accept their loss and how to move on. The winter session begins January 24 and runs on Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:15pm in the Mission Hospice Society resource room Camp Zajac In July of every year we send Bereaved children to enjoy a few days of camp at Camp Zajac. Horseback riding, archery, kayaking are some of the great activities these children get to enjoy. All children, including those who have successfully gone through our Circle of Friends program are invited to attend the camp free of charge.

24 MISSION MAR APR 2018.indd 24

Walking Group Our walking group provides an opportunity to walk and talk, while meeting new people who share a common experience that can provide mutual support and acceptance. This program combines informal support with fresh air and exercise. Compassionate Friends This is a support group for bereaved parents offered by The Compassionate Friends Organization. They meet at the hospice office every second Monday of the Month. Richard Lepinsky is the trained facilitator for this Chapter. The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. After Life Conversations This group has been meeting for over two years at the Mission Public Library on the first Monday of every month. This is an open group where people come together and talk about Near Death Experiences and the possibility of communications with their loved one after their passing. This is a very open minded group and does not follow any particular religion or spirituality but welcomes all beliefs. It is a safe place where people whom have lost a loved one can share their experiences without judgements or advice. Youth Children Support Groups - In School This group is for children between the ages of 12-14 who attend Middle School and have experienced some kind of loss, such as a person, pet, change in community or school, separation or divorce, or health. This support group is once a week for 8 weeks from 2-3pm. After the formal 8-week sessions, this group will convert to drop-in, and we will be available to further the discussion and offer support as the children require. We will have a therapy dog attend on one or more sessions and have activities, arts, and discussions relevant to this age group. This group will also enjoy a field trip and invitations to our other day camps. Mission Hospice Society 32180 Hillcrest Ave. Telephone: 604-826-2235 E-mail: info@missionhospice.bc.ca

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” ~ Malcolm X It is now being recognized across most industry sectors that in order to stay competitive in a global marketplace, businesses must look beyond cost DQG SURGXFWLYLW\ HI¿FLHQFLHV DQG also ensure that knowledge-based commodities such as innovation, creativity and adaptability are also considered. These come in the form of human-capital, where the employee’s personality, skills, education and work experience are supported and further developed enabling both the individual and the company to reach their full potential.

development, and the list goes on! This impact is far reaching as technology continues to foster innovation in the way we do business across all areas from farming to advanced manufacturing. As part of this growing trend it is becoming a high priority for communities to attract a skilled workforce through a combination of job opportunities, quality of life, training and education. Not surprisingly, increased education is associated with increased salaries, less unemployment, healthier lifestyles and lower rates of criminal activity, so it is a win-win for a community, employers and employees.

The Mission economic development department has a focus on improving workforce and educational development For our region we have seen a and is now looking to capture prime GH¿QHG VKLIW IURP UHVRXUFH EDVHG employment data using a reporting industry to a knowledge based system to track all of the credible job economy, with the tech sector in BC postings within our community and now employing 100,000, more people across the region. This information than oil, gas, mining and forestry allows us to gain valuable insight into combined. This sector includes a wide where and what type of occupations variety of businesses such as social are in demand and to then offer media, graphic design, web design, relevant assistance to local business, e-commerce, security, software such as identifying potential training and post-secondary educational opportunities.

In more recent months the reports are also capturing the levels and types of education job-seekers have and a trend appears to be developing in Mission. We are seeing an increase in the number of applicants who have a post-secondary education in the trades, manufacturing and construction industries. Economic development must also look to adapt and be innovative in its practice. The use of this powerful data as part of our business retention and attraction strategy will help us develop policies, tools and programs to align skilled workers with industry attraction and growth.

TRUE SPORT PRINCIPLES Go for It -Always strive for excellence and rise to the challenge, but never at the expense of others. Discover how good you can be. PLAY FAIR -Play honestly and obey the rules, in letter and spirit. Winning is only meaningful when competition is fair. RESPECT OTHERS—Show respect for everyone involved in creating a sporting experience, both on the field and off. Win with dignity and lose with grace. KEEP IT FUN—Find the joy of sport and have a good time. Keep a positive attitude and look to make a positive difference, on the field and in your community. STAY HEALTHY—Place physical and mental health above all other considerations and avoid unsafe activities. Respect your body and keep in shape. INCLUDE EVERYONE—Share sport with others, regardless of creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or ability. Invite everyone into sport to make it more meaningful for the whole community. GIVE BACK—Always remember the community that supports your sport and helps make it possible. Find ways to show your appreciation and help others get the most out of sport.
