Warmth, from the Heart! EVENT: November 25 & 26, Third annual “Drive on the Line” campaign.
While walking out of a movie theatre in downtown Vancouver on a chilly October night 6 years ago, Mission resident, Gregory Ould noticed a man lying in an alcove at the side of a building. Ould went up to the man, and asked if there was anything that he could do to help him out. Greg wasn’t prepared for what the man said to him. “I could use a blanket…to survive the night.” Blown away by those words, Greg went out and brought back a blanket. That act of one offer has continued to blossom from a family endeavor where he was joined by his young son Ben and daughter Emma, to a team of eight amazing board of directors and wonderful volunteers throughout the year.
It’s a two day-long blanket drive set along the Canada Line that runs from Waterfront Station to Richmond and YVR. They are always looking for volunteers that wish to give back a little “warmth from the heart “. Please visit www.BlanketBC.org for more info.
From 67 blankets on their first blanket drive, Blanket BC has grown into an incorporated charity and has been able to distributed more than 50,000 blankets to date!

Making a difference, one stop at a time! The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train hits the rails again in November, visiting over 140 communities across our network. Since the program’s inception back in 1999, more than $5.6 million and over 2.45 million pounds of food has been collected in Canada and the United States. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fight against hunger. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talents and a corporate contribution to the local food bank. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community. Visit http://www.cpr.ca for more info.
The train rolls into British Columbia and our community on Saturday, December 17th • Agassiz – 2:00 p.m., west of Highway 9, across from Agra Centre, Pioneer Ave • Maple Ridge – 4:15 p.m., across from Billy Minor Pub • Port Moody – 5:45 p.m., on Queen St. at Clark Ave

Santa is Coming! December 4th!! Nothing can keep him from one of his favourite places on earth. Santa will be stopping this year, along with his elves, on December 4th at 2-4pm to the Blackberry Kitchen at Fraser River Heritage Park. There will be hot chocolate and coee available to keep Santa and all his visitors warm. Santa will be there, of course, plus festive decorations and all his elves and helpers (we’ve been on his calendar since the fall of 2010, since he loves Mission as much as the rest of us do). So stop by and visit with Santa, have your picture taken with him and enjoy the festive spirit, in readiness for his visit to your chimney on Christmas Eve! . This is a great Mission tradition, oered by the Mission Heritage Association with the help of our sponsors, in a spectacular location. For more information on Santa’s visit to the Park visit www.heritageparkmission.ca or call 604. 826.0277

Lest We Forget A Serviceman’s Story - Why We Should Always Remember When you think of Remembrance Day you think of past Veterans. MCpl Mark Midan is not a Veteran he is still serving and has been for the last 12 years. He has seen active duty, serving in Afghanistan dismantling improvised bombs, including road side bombs that we hear so much about. Whilst we all sat at home in comfort Mark was out there spending most of his tour “outside the wire” – a very dangerous place to be! When I spoke to him he assured me it was “all part of the job, you can’t allow yourself to be scared, you need to keep calm and keep your nerve”. For Mark Remembrance Day is first about remembering all those who fought in past wars. Those that lost their lives and those that survived, in order that we have the freedoms we enjoy and take for granted today. But it is also about remembering those who are still fighting today and have recently past. Mark has seen first hand why we should remember. He has lost many friends, men close to him. On Remembrance Day he will be honouring his lost friends, keeping the memory of them close, by having a beer for them at the Legion. And think of his fellow servicemen who are still out fighting in far off places, away from home. Remembrance Day, in Mark’s words, should be just as important as Christmas.
We should ALL take the time to stop and spend time at the Cenotaph to remember. Put down our tools, our iphones, our X-boxes, our facebook and give our time to stand and remember. As MCpl Midan puts it…we should stop and hold all the brave service men and women, past and present in our hearts and not forget what they have given and what they still give so we can take our way of life for granted. On November 11th do not take life for granted – stop and remember.
Remembrance Day Ceremonies November 11th - This year it is 11/11/11!! The parade will muster at 7th and Stave Lake Streets by the old Windebank School at 1015 hours. They will march to the Clarke Theatre where the ceremonies will commence at 1040 hours. After the ceremonies everyone is welcome back at the Legion, wreaths will be laid at our Cenotaph. After that, everyone is more than welcome to remain for beverages, food and entertainment.
