AVENUE Q
Music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx The Broadway Musical for Adults Irreverently witty and outright uproarious, Avenue Q is the musical story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate who arrives in New York City looking for love, a job, and his purpose in life. The only neighbourhood he can afford is the multicultural Avenue Q, where Sesame Street-esque puppets rub shoulders with humans. Part felt, part flesh, Avenue Q is packed with songs that are surprisingly poignant and only occasionally politically correct.

THE ODD COUPLE
By Neil Simon The Classic Comedy of Mismatched Roomies Meet Felix Ungar, the neurotic, neat-freak news writer. Meet Oscar Madison, the slovenly sportswriter. When life changes bring them together as roommates, will these two friends learn to meet in the middle? Or will their irreconcilable differences split them apart? The Odd Couple, the now classic play that earned Neil Simon his first Tony Award, is one of the playwright’s funniest and most affecting works.

THE FOREIGNER
By Larry Shue An Arts Club Theatre Company presentation of Pacific Theatre’s production A Top-Secret Farce All Charlie wanted was a little peace and quiet. So when he arrives at a fishing lodge in Georgia, it seems harmless enough to masquerade as a foreigner who can’t speak English. He soon realizes, however, that people will say the most extraordinary things when they think no one can understand them! An award-winning comedic farce, The Foreigner is both scrupulously clever and outrageously funny.

Seung-ri Black Belt Academy CREATING TOMORROW’S LEADERS TODAY The Meyer family (Patrick, Janis and their children Anastasia and Eric) began training in Songahm Taekwondo back in 2001 and it quickly became a family passion. The family dream of opening their own school became a reality in 2011 when they sold the family home, said goodbye to 25yrs in Surrey and moved to Mission. Six months later they opened the Seung-ri Black Belt Academy at the Elk’s Hall on 2nd Ave. For the Meyer’s, Taekwondo has always been about training together as a family. “The Family that Kicks together Sticks togetherâ€? has become their motto. Each member of the family enjoys a different aspect of Songahm Taekwondo; from forms to weapons training, Krav Maga self defense and Mr. Meyer’s personal favourite, sparring. They incorporate traditional Taekwondo values into their martial arts training such as 5HVSHFW 3HUVHYHUDQFH *RDO 6HWWLQJ DQG &RQĂ€ GHQFH Encouraging their students to become active members of their community and helping students achieve personal goals is an intrinsic part of the Seung-ri Black Belt Academy.
The Seung-ri Black Belt Academy is a proud member of the American Taekwondo Association, the world’s largest martial arts organization with over 200 schools worldwide and 20 in the Lower Mainland. With that dedication to Songahm Taekwondo they have developed programs VSHFLĂ€ FDOO\ GHVLJQHG WR KHOS HDFK VWXGHQW DFKLHYH WKHLU maximum potential. Their “Star “ program teaches the students how to set and achieve goals, encourages students to excel in school and various activities that they enjoy, and gives the students something that they can they can work towards on their own. The Seung-ri Black Belt Academy also teaches their students how to work well individually as well as a team, and how they can encourage and help each other to become better martial artists. The Seung-ri Black Belt Academy is creating future community leaders one black belt at a time.

La Vida Local Mission City Farmers’ Market is holding its annual La Vida Local event on Saturday, September 20 from 9-1. While the market runs every Saturday from May to October in the comfortably shady and cozy parking lot behind the library, there are a number of special events throughout the season. La Vida Local is a celebration of local food, food security, and community involvement. A number of local agencies will be on hand with information about their roles in providing food security in the community. A three-part process, food security means making sure that everyone has access to healthy food, no matter their circumstances, and ensuring that this access is maintained, even in the face of global changes. It’s a broad and sweeping mandate, but one of the most important things we as a community need to address. Come to the market and learn how you can be involved in all three stages. Stage one is short-term relief, providing food for those who need it. Agencies like food banks, Hope Central, Mission Friendship Centre and school food programs work to make sure that those who are hungry get the healthy food they need. Stage two works on building food skills, and providing a network for sustained food availability. Stage three is redesigning the food system, making sure that policies, support and planning are all in place to keep a strong local food system running. The Mission City Farmers’ Market is a vital part of the second stage of food security. Local farmers provide fresh produce every Saturday, with some of them also offering farm gate sales throughout the week, and/or CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes. CSA members

Food security is important to all of us, so come on out to La Vida Local to learn more about it, and be a part of it- all the produce you need is right there at the Farmers’ Market, as well as so much more!

Understanding the foreclosure process! In B.C., foreclosures occur when a homeowner/borrower defaults on the payments of a mortgage. The lender will apply to the court to sell the home to recover the monies owed. Before the home can be sold, the homeowner/borrower usually has 6 months to redeem/payout the mortgage after which the bank/lender acts as the vendor in selling the home and lists the home for sale with a realtor.
Questions about buying a foreclosure: Q: Do I have to have cash for the full purchase price? A: No, you can obtain a mortgage subject to approved credit. 4 &DQ , SXW ´VXEMHFWVÂľ RQ WKH RIIHU ² VXFK DV LQVSHFWLRQ DQG Ă€QDQFLQJ" $ <HV ,I \RXU RIIHU LV LQ Ă€UVW SODFH WKH RIIHU FDQ KDYH VXEMHFWV SURYLGHG WKH YHQGRU EDQN OHQGHU LV ZLOOLQJ WR accept them. Q: What happens once an offer is accepted and subjects are removed? A: A court date will be set and the price of the accepted offer becomes public record. At court, your realtor will present the offer to the judge and any other person/realtor may also present a sealed bid offer at the same time. The judge will generally accept the “bestâ€? overall offer. Q: So even though I have the accepted offer, I might not get the house? A: Yes. It is wise to have your realtor attend court with another higher sealed bid just in case another party arrives to bid on the property. The judge reviews the sealed bids and the property is SOLD to the highest bidder. What’s our story? - Defining Mission A brand is not a logo or a tagline, but the perception or story that a community offers. Trying to discover this story is what Mission’s Brand is all about. Over the summer we have asked weekly questions. The conversation is to draw out the values and story of Mission. This is the foundation of building a brand for Mi s s i o n. T he c om m un it y’ s participation and the diversity of voices has been appreciated and is valued immensely. For example in week four we asked: ‘Why do you live in Mission?’ This generated a lot of strong responses. Some said it was for the outdoor recreational activities, but most said they live in Mission for the affordability in housing. They stay because of the beautiful scenery that surrounds us, and the close knit community feel.
friendly and welcoming people. “People are just who they are here... authentic, laid back, and not afraid of other people being who they really are too...” (W. Talbot). There is still time to get involved in the conversation on the Mission’s Brand Facebook page, Twitter feed and on the Chamber of C o m m e r c e w e b s i t e . This night will also feature workshops which will further define Mission’s story and key factors that will inform Mission’s Brand. Door open at 5:30pm and is FREE to all members of the community.
Another question asked was; ‘What kind of people live Mission’s Brand is an initiative of Mission Regional in Mission?’ Most commented that our town contains Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures North Fraser, and Mission Community Services.

Once all salads are assembled, drizzle the reduced balsamic vinegar on the plate. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil on the top of the tomato allowing it to cascade down the sides. I am a 53 year old man who is self-employed in a field of work that demands me to be very physically fit. I struggled to walk. I couldn't operate my legs normally. I had muscle weakness and was losing muscle mass. I suffer from fibromyalgia. The condition causes widespread pain, and in turn chronic fatigue, sleep deprivation, and often depression. I had all of these. I also suffer from arthritis causing joint pain all the time. I had no energy and felt like my health was degrading slowly. Before I tried the Photon Genius Light Therapy at FUEL Supplements & Vitamins in Mission, I went for a blood analysis and saw what my blood cells looked like. I was told that I had 'Rouleaux Type Blood Cells,’ a condition where the blood cells stick together which prevents them from carrying the oxygen properly through the blood stream thus causing chronic fatigue. After 6 sessions in the Photon Genius Light Therapy and drinking Dolphin Water I went back for another blood analysis and was surprised to see that my blood cells had separated and were now moving individually, and not in clumps through my blood stream therefore carrying more oxygen. I had noticed that I no longer had chronic fatigue. After my sessions in the Photon Genius Light Therapy machine I feel better than ever! I have more energy, my fibromyalgia symptoms have diminished greatly and I don’t have joint pain like I used to. Good health to you. Yani Brilvicas

How to enjoy your late summer in Mission... Well everybody, it may be September but there is still a plethora of pleasant pastimes to enjoy in this beautiful town of ours. In the past few years we’ve experience some fantastic weather lasting until mid-October.
JUST BECAUSE THE SEASON IS ABOUT TO CHANGE DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE FUN HAS TO END. Before the wet season (which seems to be November-June in this part of the world) you deserve to take a load off, and experience some of the beauty of this town. At Fraser Valley Ace Hardware, we may be passionate about home-improvement, but when our lawns are mowed, our sheds are built, and our chores are done (or completely abandoned) we know how to get out and have fun in Mission. So in light of this, we asked our staff how they like to enjoy their remaining warm days and evenings outside of work.

What is Community Inclusion and why does it matter? If you were born in British Columbia before 1980, you may not have school memories of learning alongside kids with developmental disabilities. In the past, ‘those kids’ were often labeled and placed in institutions and denied the rights that most of us take for granted. The community living movement was formed by parents to advocate for family members who have developmental disabilities to be fully included in all elements of community life. Here in B.C. the community living movement resulted in the closure of institutions. When folks moved into communities, there were opportunities for community members to meet, form friendships, and learn from those with labels. Our lives are richer for the connections we have. We may understand resilience in a new way and carry a deep appreciation for the beauty of diversity.
Photos by daleklippenstein.com
While the deinstitutionalization of people resulted in profound change and social improvement for individuals with disabilities, the movement still has work to do on the social justice front. From our perspective, community inclusion is not a social justice issue for those who have disabilities, it is a social justice issue for those who do not. Inclusive communities are better communities for all of us. Many doors have yet to be opened to ensure that people who have been marginalized may fully realize the experience of living in welcoming communities. MACL strives to further inclusion by supporting individuals and children with developmental disabilities to have inclusive preschool experiences, attend neighborhood schools, participate in inclusive recreation and leisure activities, live in neighborhoods they choose, work at real jobs for real pay, and access community services. There are many ways you can join the community inclusion movement! Become a member of MACL, donate to our work, become a champion employer, get to know someone with a developmental disability, and attend our 15th annual Illuminaria festival to celebrate inclusion! In the words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) is a common eye condition and a leading cause of vision loss among people age 50 and older. It causes damage to the macula, a small spot near the center of the retina and the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision, which lets us see objects that are straight ahead. Regular eye exams with your optometrist can help you keep track of the condition your eye is in and better maintain it for the future.

Mission resident Birttany O’Rourke became Miss Fraser Valley 2014 - 2015 in June and has been busy volunteering and networking in her community since then. Here is Brittany’s story‌ “My dream going into the Miss BC pageant was to be able to continue my work in helping youth build a sense of belonging and identity. My dream is to inspire youth to be true to themselves, understand there are no limitations to their dreams. I want to speak to youth about not being afraid to be real, to have the courage and FRQĂ€ GHQFH LQ WKHPVHOYHV WR DFKLHYH and follow their passions. I want to be real with youth and tell them my experiences and how I had to learn to love myself more above all, so I could walk away from certain situations and people. My passion behind that dream comes from that I once felt like I didn’t really know what I wanted like any typical youngster, I just wanted to feel like I belonged in my circle of friends. I felt a loss of my cultural identity, sometimes I was made fun of for being First Nations, I have been stereotyped and put down and experienced racism, I knew I was First Nations, but I didn’t know what it was like to know the ceremonies, songs and traditions. I felt like I didn’t know my identity because of that, at times I was embarrassed to be something I didn’t really know much of, the words were almost believable, the little I did know about the culture was from the Aboriginal Program and Aboriginal leadership program in my high school which I participated in. I have always been thankful that I grew up in a very loving and caring family who have been my biggest support. My mother was adopted at a young age to an amazing family, but my mother wasn’t raised in the culture, so I felt like I had a hole inside of me that I didn’t know KRZ WR Ă€ OO , NQHZ WKDW LW ZRXOGQ¡W EH Ă€ OOHG LI , GLGQ¡W JDLQ WKH NQRZOHGJH RI my culture. I felt like I couldn’t truly be proud of who I was until I could answer all those questions people
had asked me before, just so I could answer them for myself. -
Written by Miss Fraser Valley 2014 2015, Brittany O’Rourke
My family are spiritual and religious people, everyone in my family is in their own way. I became more so when I went through struggles and the journey it took to heal and learn how to cope healthy and holistically. Throughout my childhood into adolescents my family and I went through great sadness in tragedies of losing loved ones. At a young age it was hard to handle those emotions of grief and loss, as well as dealing with the many different transitions and experiences of becoming an adolescent, some of those experiences were traumatizing I was putting myself in many risky situations.
The Miss BC program recognizes young ladies across British Columbia for their personal accomplishments and community involvement, assisting them to achieve their goals through workshops and seminars that touch on their self-developmental needs. Winners of our titles proceed to compete in national programs, and ultimately may represent Canada on the world stage. For more information visit www.missbc.ca.
I had a wake up call after I almost lost my own life due to unhealthy choices. I had the mind frame that nothing would happen to me. I was beginning to learn through the guidance of my family and services of others that I was in need to overview the life I was living and the life I wanted to live. I knew the person I wanted to be, I just had to believe in myself. I took time to myself and surrounded myself with positive people and took the steps to educate myself, volunteer and gain experience in WKH À HOG , ZDQWHG WR ZRUN Now that I have reached my dream and become an Aboriginal Liaison worker in the Mission School District I feel proud and dedicated to working with youth and being able to make a positive difference in their lives through culture and support.
