AVENUE Q
Music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx The Broadway Musical for Adults Irreverently witty and outright uproarious, Avenue Q is the musical story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate who arrives in New York City looking for love, a job, and his purpose in life. The only neighbourhood he can afford is the multicultural Avenue Q, where Sesame Street-esque puppets rub shoulders with humans. Part felt, part flesh, Avenue Q is packed with songs that are surprisingly poignant and only occasionally politically correct.

THE ODD COUPLE
By Neil Simon The Classic Comedy of Mismatched Roomies Meet Felix Ungar, the neurotic, neat-freak news writer. Meet Oscar Madison, the slovenly sportswriter. When life changes bring them together as roommates, will these two friends learn to meet in the middle? Or will their irreconcilable differences split them apart? The Odd Couple, the now classic play that earned Neil Simon his first Tony Award, is one of the playwright’s funniest and most affecting works.

THE FOREIGNER
By Larry Shue An Arts Club Theatre Company presentation of Pacific Theatre’s production A Top-Secret Farce All Charlie wanted was a little peace and quiet. So when he arrives at a fishing lodge in Georgia, it seems harmless enough to masquerade as a foreigner who can’t speak English. He soon realizes, however, that people will say the most extraordinary things when they think no one can understand them! An award-winning comedic farce, The Foreigner is both scrupulously clever and outrageously funny.

FATBURGER
a member of Affirmation - Hatzic Secondary School’s Vocal Jazz group. This year marks the 20th anniversary of my graduation from HSS and my final performance as member of this popular local music institution. For this issue, we reached out to many of Mission’s other musical institutions - the Folk Music Festival, Rockin’ River Music Fest, Joy Vox, Serenata, and many more - and tried to profile as many of Mission’s musicians as space and time would allow. What a vibrant musical community Mission has to enjoy and be proud of. Be sure to come on out to the Envision Twilight Concert Series every Wednesday and Friday evening at Fraser River Heritage Park until the end of August. I will see ya there!

In April, we were also honoured with a Business Excellence Award nomination from the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce in the Local Focus category. The Chamber describes the Local Focus as a business with a ‘significant local focus in their enterprise.’ We are very proud that 100% of our focus is on your community. Being recognized for simply doing what we do, is both flattering and rewarding. Thank-you Mission for honouring What’s On! Mission - we are proud to serve you!
I have been spending some time reminiscing about my time as

Some of my favorite things… By Cory Cassel Did you know that Fatburger is about more than just great burgers?! I was invited to attend the ribbon cutting of the Fatburger in Mission. Mayor Ted Adlem and other notables were on hand to officially open Mission’s newest eatery and to be the first customers of this new, locally owned and operated business. We were treated to a wonderful variety of delicious burgers - beef, chicken, turkey (YUM!), fish and veggie burgers available on white or whole wheat buns OR turn your burger into a lettuce wrap and nix the bun! So many options, and their AAA Alberta Beef patties are never frozen.
Marble Slab Creamery ice cream in downtown Vancouver for years, and now we can get it in MISSION! I want to extend my congratulations to Lise, Pyarali, and Karim Jinnah on the opening of their new Fatburger franchise and wish you many years of success in Mission.
To my great surprise, the Fatburger menu has much more than just burgers! They serve breakfast all day, wings, mini donuts, salads, milk shakes, poutine, and more. We noticed they even served ice cream and then to my delight, I realized it wasn’t JUST ice cream; it was Marble Slab Creamery ice cream! A favorite of ours, we have enjoyed

Keep in touch with the business of Mission Publishing Mission’s BIZenews gives the economic development office the opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of local business services, programs and policy development initiatives and, perhaps more importantly, putting a face and personal touch to local businesses and development projects. Missionite’s may have a limited perspective of what development activities are occurring, or what business products and services are available to them in the community. BIZenews is intended to provide a broader picture of those activities and to encourage readers to stay engaged with community economic development activities in Mission.
Stacey Crawford, Economic Development Officer District of Mission
The BIZenews electronic newsletter runs five issues throughout the year. Story features to date have covered many local planning and economic development initiatives, such as the Downtown Revitalization Action Plan, as well feature stories on new, existing and emerging businesses with retail, commercial, industrial and institutional presence. Feature stories have included V.I.P. Soap Products Ltd; Karla’s Specialteas; Fraser Valley Truck Parts; Evoke Wellness; Riverside College, the Ruskin Dam seismic upgrade and even the Sasquatch! Readership continues to grow and BIZenews is currently distributed to approximately 655 subscribers. Comments are also encouraged and are generally about the positive message related to development in Mission, along with how good it was to see developer testimonials. Typical readers include business owners, developers, realtors and influencers throughout the Lower Mainland, with the heaviest readership being within the local community. To check out what’s happening with major initiatives and developments and to learn more about local businesses, check out the Mission BIZenews link at www.missionbizenews.ca, and don’t forget to click the “Subscribe” button.

Serenata
Serenata is a community women’s choir based in Mission, and draws its members from around the Central Valley. Conducted by Deborah Handley, we sing music from across centuries, cultures and genres with spirit, passion and joy. Serenata is a community. We are sisters, mothers, aunts, nieces, grandmothers and great grandmothers. We are accountants, students, teachers, judges, retirees and more. Some of us have a wealth of experience singing and some of us are coming with brand new eyes. But we all love to sing. More than that, we love the challenge of learning new music and creating some music together.
If you are interested in singing with us here’s what you need to know: • You don’t need to audition, or sing on your own. • You don’t need to read music. • You don’t need any previous experience with choirs or singing to join us. You might feel out of your depth at times but don’t worry; the singers around you will help, and you will acquire the skills just by ‘hanging in there.’ Each September and January we hold open rehearsals and encourage women to drop in and see if we fit together. In addition to creating harmony and singing wonderful music, we can promise a warm welcome, great stories, good food and a lot of laughter. Interested? Intrigued? Curious? Why not take the plunge? For more information call Deborah (604-5561368). The time for singing has come.

DECKING 101 Are you building a new deck this summer? Does your current deck look like it was made out of salvaged driftwood? Whether you are re-staining your existing deck or staining new material, the helpful folks at Fraser Valley Ace Hardware are here to help you through your project.
PREPARATION IS PARAMOUNT CLEANING
Pressure washing is always a good idea in order to remove dirt and debris from both new and old decking material. Note: Make sure you use a correct nozzle and a lower power setting to avoid damage to your deck. Using a liquid deck cleaner will also help.
SANDING
Every year people ask if it is necessary to sand their deck boards prior to staining. Yes, yes it is. We agree that sanding is hard work and is a less than desirable chore, but if you want the best results from your efforts then sanding is absolutely crucial.
WHY?
If your decking is new, then sanding will remove the millglaze from the boards. Mill-glaze is a clear layer of melted sap that forms when the rough lumber is passed through the planer during the milling process. This barrier must be removed in order for stain to penetrate the boards properly. If your decking has existing stain on it then the old stain must be sanded down before new stain can be applied uniformly. If you let your deck boards sit for too long before staining they may start to turn grey. The greying of the wood is actually dead wood fibers, which you can remove by using a restoration product or sanding. This will allow the stain and wood lasts longer.
GET TESTED
Use a moisture meter to check the moisture level of your deck. In order for stain to work properly your decking must be below 18% moisture content.
WAIT FOR GOOD WEATHER
Do not stain wet decking! If your deck is not dry then your stain will lift, bubble and peel like a bad sunburn, and just like a sunburn, this will undoubtedly make you angry.
However, if the weather is over 30 degrees Celsius than it is too hot to stain as the stain doesn’t have the opportunity to penetrate into the wood and will merely just sit on top.
TIME TO STAIN
Is your deck dry? Clean? Sanded? Now your deck is ready to receive your stain. For best results roll the stain of your choice onto the deck and then use a brush to evenly paint the stain into the wood. This is called “back-brushing” and will maximize the amount of stain that penetrates into your deck. Also, stain or seal the cut ends and bottom of your boards for increased longevity.
IN CONCLUSION
Having a stained deck is a terrific way to add value and beauty to your home and is well worth the effort. However, no matter what product you use, your deck will require annual maintenance to some degree and will need to be restained every couple of years. The frequency of re-staining and level of up-keep is dependent on many variables including but not limited to: direct sunlight, weather, quality of construction, and product quality and application.
TOO MUCH WORK?
If all this protocol and maintenance seems like too much of a hassle for you, we also sell composite decking in a variety of colours! For more tips and tricks on deck staining or any other project you have planned for your home this summer, visit the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Fraser Valley Ace Hardware. 5
Contributed by Wendy Weymann
ways to eat more fruits and veggies
1
Smoothies! I bought one of those fancy schmancy blenders so now every time I make something my family gets an infomercial! My go-to recipe is this: handful of spinach, 1 cup frozen fruit, hemp seeds, chia seeds, banana, coconut milk or juice, Greek yogurt & dates or honey to sweeten. #bestwaytoeatspinach
2
Farmers Market, Eat local and support a local farm! The Mission Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from 9-1 in the Mission Library parking Lot.
3
Fruit Salad, Yummy, yummy! Whenever I make fruit salad everyone in my house LOVES it (including my teenagers!) Here is the recipe I’ve been using lately:: 1 box strawberries, 1 box blueberries, a mango & a teaspoon of vanilla sugar – yummo!
4
Plant a GARDEN: Mission is an easy place to grow veggies ; lettuce, spinach, carrots & herbs are all pretty easy to grow!
5
Fruit Popsicles! My daughter has been making these lately and it’s a great alternative to high-sugar freezies. Load up your popsicle tray with fresh or frozen fruit and the fill it up with juice or pudding absolutely delish!

My name is Irene and I am from Mission. I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer just over a year ago. Crushed and at a loss of faith I didn’t know where to turn. The doctor wanted to take out my bladder but that wasn’t the answer for me. I came across a copy of What’s On Magazine and found FUEL Supplements & Vitamins’ testimonials. I went to see Dolf and told him what I was battling. Dolf explained the benefits of his Dolphin Water which I started drinking right away. He also helped me with my nutrition and suggested some supplements. After 2 ½ months I had a cystoscopy check and was completely clear. I am staying with Dolphin Water and never looking back. Thank you Dolf! I have been suffering with Psoriasis for over 40 years now. Dolf at FUEL introduced me to Quantum Light Therapy and Alkaline Water with Oxygen which I have been drinking for about 6 months now. It has made a huge difference in my life! My skin has cleared up which has given me confidence so I can wear shorts and not be embarrassed. I'm a much happier person now. I can smile and enjoy life! Thanks to Dolf and Zorka at Fuel.

27th Annual Mission Folk Music Festival: Beyond the Ordinary
July 25th to 27th at the Fraser River Heritage Park The Mission Folk Music Festival brings the world to Mission and Mission to the world. In its 27 year history it has presented over 2500 musicians, singers and dancers from nearly 100 countries to the festival stage in the Fraser River Heritage Park, creating a small world village of cultures, languages and peoples under the banner of music. This year’s festival will continue in its quest to present the best, the rarest, the unheard of that should be heard and to nurture local artists while reaching around the globe to bring in the world’s great music. It will encourage audiences to discover new musical forms and ideas and to become aware of the richness and diversity of the music of many peoples and cultures. It will seek to balance the new and even daring with brilliant reflections of familiar sounds and traditions and bring it all together on a festival weekend in the scenic Fraser River Heritage Park. The festival roster for 2014 includes one of Ireland’s all time favourite musical groups, Dervish, who will be heading to Mission after performing at the Glastonbury Festival in England. The world traveling performing arts spectacle Dulsori from Korea makes its first appearance at Mission this year. From other parts of the world, the festival features A Celebration of Music and Dance of West Africa with Alpha YaYa Diallo and a troupe of 10 musicians, dancers and singers from Senegal and other West African countries, the South Pacific group VOU offering music and dance of Fiji, music of the Balkans with the Lemon Bucket Orkestra and Orkestar Slivovica and sounds, songs and dance of Cuba with Wil Campa and Orchestra. As something of a festival within a festival, there is a featured blues element with True Blues artists Guy Davis and Corey Harris along with Zakiya Hooker, daughter of John Lee Hooker, and one of Canada’s best bluesmen, Tim Williams. Other artists performing at the festival include music made in BC with Good For Grapes, the Sweet Lowdown, and the winners of the annual Music BC Festival Showcase Awards. Also on the roster are special guests Quartetto Gelato, Ruth Moody of the Wailin’ Jennies, Fish and Bird, the Cassius Khan Ensemble and more. The festival features four stages offering concerts, workshops, collaborations and sessions. There is also a Folk Art and Import Market, a diverse and tasty array of food concessions, licensed bistro, camping, and the best toilet amenities offered by any outdoor festival. The Festival has carved out a niche that is unique among Canadian festivals. Programming includes yet reaches far beyond the annual roster of touring artists to present music and cultural expressions special to this festival, artists often not seen at festivals anywhere else in Canada. The festival’s audiences have come to expect and appreciate music they’ve not heard of before; they’ve come to trust that whatever appears on the Mission stages will excite and expand their musical horizons.
Festival details, including the Gala Concert scheduled for July 24th, are available at www.missionfolkmusicfestival.ca 34

Benefits of Arts & Culture to our Community Written by Bronwen Sutherland There is a moment in the course of a live performance that is purely magical. It happens for only a few seconds when the house lights dim, and the stage is standing as a silent sentinel in complete blackness. It is in that moment that the possibilities, dreams and expectations of the audience are held tightly in the grips of the artist and everything and anything is in the realm of probabilities. Live Performance can transform a person, a family or even a community. It can celebrate, educate, create a tool for change, record the culture of a community and it can simply entertain. An experience at the theatre can stay with someone for their entire lives. The value of a cultural artistic event is immeasurable to the health of the community; however there have been countless studies that suggest the financial bearing of these events is enormous. Performances, including festivals and community celebration, can be an extraordinary economic driver for a neighborhood or a community of any size. A quick study of the anatomy of an event illustrates the impact of a single event at the Clarke Theatre. These events happen many times over the course of a month and not only at the theatre, but many other facilities throughout the Mission community. The artistic community is one industry that provides the biggest return of investment dollars if one considers the quantifiable financial benefits that can be realized in a community. More than fifty percent of the audience members attending a performance travel from outside of the Mission area. In some cases, it is as high as seventy-five to one
hundred percent for certain dance studios that are located elsewhere in the Fraser Valley. During the course of the day of an event audience members spend money at community businesses – restaurants, drug stores, grocery stores, fast food restaurants and specialty stores. In some cases, hotel and bed and breakfast rooms are booked for larger festivals and events. The average out of town audience member spends $75 in the community, above and beyond the price of their admission ticket. During larger Festivals and Events that amount is closer to $125 per person. This can amount to $75,000 for one single event at the Clarke Theatre. This is a fraction of the initial investment from municipal and regional funding agencies. The enormous financial returns are important to all the residents of Mission, but they pale in comparison to the quality of life the cultural sector offer to the community. Any community without a soul will be unattractive to people, regardless of employment opportunities. People invest in, and move to, communities that boast a lively and vibrant cultural life. A community where they can attend live performances, visit galleries and partake in cultural ventures themselves. Numerous researchers have identified the development of strong arts and cultural communities as a key strategy in attracting people to a city. More and more, international analysts are arguing that arts and culture is KEY in attracting and retaining skilled workers; and ultimately a strong, viable and competitive economy. Mission boasts a strong arts and cultural community, but we have to be vigilant and strong to protect all aspects of it. We must be prepared to prevent any erosion of the community’s investment and be ready to protect this valuable resource. Take some time to find out what is happening in the community, buy a ticket, attend a concert, and take a leisurely stroll through the Mission Arts Council Gallery. You will be so glad you did!! Bronwen Sutherland has a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism and has been the manager of Mission’s Clarke Theatre since 2001.

What Buyers Love: Prepare Your Home to Sell Quickly 1 Buyers love light and bright homes. Add high intensity light bulbs and be sure to clean all light shades and covers. 2. Buyers love clean homes. Do a thorough cleaning throughout. Give special attention to: windows, screens, counter tops, appliance tops, mirrors, ovens, sinks, toilets, and tub/ shower walls. 3. Buyers love spacious rooms. Arrange furniture and décor to improve each room. Remove unnecessary items that don’t fit in. 4. Buyers love a fresh coat of paint. Think white, off-white, or beige. These neutral colors make rooms look bigger and are most likely to coordinate with the new buyer’s décor and furnishings. 5. Buyers pay attention to tiny details. Fix all of the “little things” – loose doorknobs, leaky faucets, towel racks, and clean and repair caulk areas. 6. Buyers should love the smell of your home, it is their most memory inducing sense. Don’t hesitate to burn candles with warm scents such as cinnamon bun and apple pie. 7. Buyers want to see themselves living in your home. Remove your family photos, put all personal collections into storage, and ensure your home is ready for its new owners!
