Scrapbooking Charity Event of the Year BC Scrapbooking Crop for Kids is an annual charity scrapbooking event beneﬁtting BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Since 2008 it has been BC’s most popular educational & inspirational paper crafting weekend, and has raised over $71,000 for the foundation. The 2011 Crop for Kids took place September 30 to October 2, 2011, at the Ramada Conference Centre in Abbotsford, where scrapbookers of all skill levels experienced everything from a single class to a weekend full of classes and cropping, plus gifts, prizes and more. All of our amazing classes were designed and taught by popular local designers and scrapbook retailers from all over BC. All class materials, time and talent had been generously donated by manufacturers and local merchants, which means all proceeds from the classes will go directly to charity!

ARMS runs great Preschool programs: We will come to your class to teach Salmon Scales and Tales or Fantastic Frogs. Or visit the Allco Fish Hatchery and see the salmon coming up to spawn, learn about the salmon life cycle and paint wooden salmon to take home!

It’s Apple Festival time again. Every year we fill our front parking lot with bins and baskets of unusual varieties of apples from the Fraser Valley as well as Keremeos, Cawston, Okanagan, Saltspring Island. From the old-fashioned to the brand new, each variety has a unique appearance and flavour. You can sample as many kinds as you can fit in your belly. Once you think you know your apples well enough you can try the apple quiz, where whoever identifies the greatest number of varieties by sight wins a prize. Another treat is the warm apple crisp served with ice cream for only a dollar a bowl. And don’t forget to pick up a couple (or a dozen)

apple pies for your freezer. If you have an even sweeter tooth, do some sampling at the honey table. In addition to the apple tent, each year we bring in a truckload of giant pumpkins. The kids love to guess the weight of the biggest one. Of course there’s a prize for that, too. We’re looking forward to celebrating the delicious natural bounty of this great province with our community. Hope to see you there!

A New School Comes to Town The Environmental School Project

Not heard of it? Read on... The Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Environmental School Project is about learning and teaching differently. One of the significant differences is the classroom is outdoors in the natural world. Students are learning in real time, in nature, hands-on and in context. Through experiential learning, the students reconnect to the natural world and their environment, they explore areas of our community that are historically or culturally significant. Researchers will be following the progress of the new school, supported by SFU and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Grant. Clayton Maitland the schools Coordinator writes… The Maple Ridge Environmental School Project began in Allco Park through an extraordinarily sunny week in September. An exciting time for the seeds of our community’s relationships to grow. The first day of the first week began with the families gathering together to recognize the earth, the river and the ancient cedar. We built respect for the place we were learning in and recognized the territories of Katzie and Kwantlen First Nation. Kwantlen First Nation Cultural Leader, Chris

Thomas and Friends welcomed us with story and song. We celebrated the opportunities and possibilities for learning in a place like Allco Park. Parents got together while students explored their learning environment. The students participated with the natural world in activities that emphasized community, reconnecting to the natural world and, as Chris Thomas said, “All our Relations”. Within exploring forest and river, storytelling, fort building, art, archery and other activities, learning flourished through the week. Every experience created a story. Trent, a grade 7 student, mentioned, “I have never enjoyed writing until now. I have stories to tell.” Many students reflect and then retell their experience to the community. Tatsiana, a parent, exclaimed, “They have a new light in their eyes.” Everyone is looking forward to enhancing possibilities. The first day. The first week. We are participating in our journey. It has been a magical journey from their ﬁrst to their latest release, Gracehill Fair, which has had high praise from Celtic radio announcers from Belfast to Maui, and whose title track won SONG OF THE YEAR this month, on their home base of Vancouver Island at the VIMA Music Awards. They were also presented with the Island Classic Award honoring their 45 plus year career. Next year, The Irish Rovers will be ﬁlming their 2012 Holiday Christmas Special with special guests, at some of Canada’s most spectacular winter locations. Most of the Rovers’ albums over the last twenty years were recorded in both Canada and Ireland on their own record label, Rover Records, which is about to release their next album, “Drunken Sailor” for 2011. This release was spurred on by the fact that their recording of Drunken Sailor recently gained over 3 million hits on You Tube.

Nine from one, one for all... They call them selves ‘The Group of Nine’ Six years ago, 9 artists joined together to form a monthly critique group and later decided to become exhibition partners as well. Their meetings consist of sharing, discussing and evaluating each other’s work and oﬀering suggestions for improvement. When asked, they will readily admit that their monthly meetings are as much about food and friendship, as they are about art. Each year, the group holds a 2-day sale to share the results of their work with friends, neighbours and art lovers.

This year’s will be the 6th such event and will feature a special challenge: Nine from One (Nine Paintings from One Image) For this, the artists chose an image of a ﬂower, a fuchsia, courtesy of the photography of John Bale, one of the members’ husband. Each will create a painting from this image, but in their own style, genre and interpretation, using all diﬀerent media. Since the members’ work ranges from super realistic to abstract, the results will vary wildly! The resulting paintings will be on display at this year’s sale.

Haney House Museum does Halloween! October 30st • 1:00pm - 4:00pm What could be a more ﬁtting place to visit on Halloween weekend then Maple Ridge’s own historic Haney House Museum? Come see the 1876 house decorated for fall, have a guided tour from one of our costumed guides, children can partake in a Halloween craft and leave with some treats! Feel free to come dressed up in costume, or without. If the weather is chilly we’ll have something warm to drink inside as well.

Hockey Day 2011 A huge success! On August 28th, the Board of the Pitt Meadows Community Association hosted its 3rd annual Hockey Day event in Osprey Village. This was a free event that brought together people of all ages for a friendly afternoon of street hockey this summer. With the support of Power of Kids 4 Sport and local business donations that tipped the scales at over $1,000, doubling the success of last year. This fundraiser is held for kids who cannot otherwise aﬀord to play hockey.

At this time, the PMCA is accepting applications for the 2011 PMCA Hockey Bursary. Pitt Meadows residents under 18 years of age are eligible recipients of funding towards ice hockey registration or equipment. Contact the association to apply via e-mail at info@pmcaonline.com

The Community Resource Fair October 15th Meet people, have fun and learn a lot by joining the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie Community Resource Fair at the Haney Place Mall on Saturday October 15th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Entertainment includes clowns, a scavenger hunt, music, a story time with puppets and a Toy Walk sponsored by the Food Bank who is asking you for a donation of food or money to play.

With sponsorship from the District of Maple Ridge, the Down Town Business Association, the Ridge Meadows Rotary and the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News, over 45 agencies, businesses and groups who provide community, health, safety, education and wellness services will be displaying their wares. Last year over 1,000 community members came to get information and have fun.

This free, fun-ﬁlled, interactive event features information regarding services for children and families, youth and seniors, safety and policing, health and wellness and other topics of importance. The community, especially newcomers, is invited to join family and friends and enjoy the “One Stop Shop” for information and family fun.

GETI is a grassroots movement rooted in the Transition Town principles of permaculture, in which every aspect of an environment is equally important to the health and harmony of the whole. Through GETI, action groups are formed that work on diﬀerent solutions to community based issues such as food sovereignty, transportation, pollution and the local economy. Golden Ears Community Co-op is one of those action groups. This group’s vision is to create a store front cooperative in Maple Ridge. Cooperatives are social enterprises that work at strengthening and re-localizing communities. They do this through creation of local, living wage jobs, by connecting the community and its local resources and by providing community space for events and workshops.

The Home Team Saints in Tool Belts!

Ellason Signature Homes (www.ellason.ca) has joined The Home Team to do a large scale renovation for the Kuris family in Maple Ridge which will be completed in just seven days. The concept was inspired by the Extreme Home Makeover TV show. On January 22, 2011 tragedy struck the Kuris family. Sam, a loving and dedicated husband and father was killed when crushed from a toppling forklift. Since this time Mrs. Kuris has been left to care for their three young children while facing the daunting prospect of addressing the many signiﬁcant challenges her house presents. The Home Team’s goal is to accomplish one project each year. The selected recipients will be given a home makeover by a team of many skilled and unskilled volunteers, free of charge. The majority of home improvements will be made possible by donations of materials and labor by local businesses and contractors. The Home Team is a non-proﬁt community outreach program of the Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist Church whose motto is “repairing homes-changing lives”.
