KidSport - Tri-Cities

KidSport believes that ALL kids, regardless of their socioeconomic background, should have the opportunity to play a season of sport. Kids learn so many great life skills from playing sports – commitment, goal setting, teamwork, discipline, accepting defeat, constructive criticism, etc. We subsidize the sport registration fees so that lower income kids don’t lose out on these opportunities. What is your favourite thing about what you do? We get to play a small role in potentially changing a child’s life. This year, at least four young people we’ve supported over the years are receiving university athletic scholarships to play their sport and get an education. For some of these youth, they would not have had this opportunity if it weren’t for KidSport. What is something that people don’t know about KidSport? Government funding makes up less than 6% of our budget. Almost all of the money we give out is raised by our amazing volunteers, donors and sponsors in the Tri-Cities. How can these youth get the equipment they need to participate in sport? Twice a year, we hold our Massive Used Equipment Sales. You can get just about any type of sporting good at prices that are 60-80% less than new and all the proceeds go to funding registration fees. Pets Can Keep Seniors

Young at Heart! As we age, sometimes we can end up spending more and more time alone, not necessarily by choice. Our families are busy and sadly we lose our loved ones. For some people, pets can be a new form of companionship and give new purpose. Here are just a few ways that pets can improve your life and keep you young at heart. 1. Daily Exercise & Routine – all types of pets require daily care which creates a routine. Feedings, walks, litter cleaning, training and more. All of this creates a daily purpose. And the walks provide exercise and some fresh air!

2. Banish Loneliness – you're never alone when you have a pet! They're also a great way to meet new people when you're out for walks or at the pet store. 3. Positive Emotions – how can you be sad when you have an excited pet greet you at the door? Their funny behaviour causes laughter and they can be a great comfort when you're suffering from grief. Pets also reduce stress and lower blood pressure. 4. Lifelong learning – Whether it's teaching your dog new tricks or learning all about their breed or teaching a bird how to speak, pets provide you with an opportunity to learn which keeps the mind sharp! 5. Love! - Pets give unconditional love every day. Being loved, wanted and needed feels good and keeps you focused on the positive and the present.

Pecan Pie - A Classic! Preparation time: 20 minutes + chilling time Cooking time: 1 hour 15 minutes Serves 8-10

What’s On!

Recipe Page

TM

Ingredients 500g pack ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry 1/3 cup / 75g unsalted butter, softened 2/3 cup / 100g golden caster sugar 1/2 cup / 175g golden syrup 1/2 cup / 175g maple syrup 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp vanilla extract 3 cups / 300g Pecan nuts halves Double cream, or good quality ice cream to serve

Method Lightly flour the work surface. Roll out the pastry and use to line a 9” / 23cm loose-bottomed tart tin. (Top tip - I always keep left over pastry in case I need to fill any cracks after the blind baking!) Prick the pastry base with a fork then chill for 30 mins. Heat oven to 375F / 190C / gas 5. Line the chilled pastry case with greaseproof paper, fill with ceramic baking beans and bake for 15-20 mins until the sides are set. Remove the beans and parchment and return to the oven for 5-10 mins until the base is set and the pastry is golden. Leave to cool. Increase the oven temperature to 400F / 200C / gas 6. Beat the butter and sugar together with an electric whisk until light and fluffy. While the beaters are still turning pour in both of the syrups. Gradually add the beaten eggs, 1/4 tsp salt and the vanilla, and whisk until combined. Then stir through the nuts and pour all of the mixture into the tart case. Bake for 10 mins. Turn heat down to 325F / 160C / gas 3 and continue baking for 30-35 mins – the pie should be golden brown but the filling should wobble a little in the centre when shaken. Leave to cool completely in the tin. Serve with cream or ice cream!

Simplify Your Life... with these downsizing tips! With Spring right around the corner, now is the perfect time to declutter and downsize the stuff in your home. While some stuff is important and needed in our lives, a lot of stuff or clutter can have a negative impact on our lives. Stress, anxiety, anger, frustration and confusion are just some of the negative side effects of having too much stuff invading the valuable space in your home and mind. Downsizing and living more minimally can give you a sense of control of home and life. This doesn’t mean getting rid of everything. It just means only keeping what you really need and want - what is most important to you. So if you’re looking to downsize, declutter or live a more simple life with less stuff then follow these tips to accomplish this. 1. Assess Your Actual Needs - what items in your home do you truly need to live? A bed, dresser, couch, TV, table? Most likely yes. Treadmill, spare chair, good China, 4 TV’s? Maybe not. Take this time to determine what you’re actually using on a regular basis versus what you think you’re going to use but never or rarely do. Are these items important to keep or can you do without them? The easiest way to do this is to ask yourself if you’ve used it in the last year and how often? If you haven’t then there’s a good chance it can go.

What’s On! • www.whatsonportcoquitlam.ca POCO MAR APR 2018.indd 27

2. Room by Room - if you have a whole house to sort then it can seem very overwhelming at this point. Where to start? Break it down room by room and only tackle one room at a time. 3. Decide How to Dispose of Items - while sorting your stuff, make 3 spots in your home - one for sell items, one for items to donate and the third for garbage. This saves you resorting items again when you’re done. Sell items through a garage sale or online. Western Sky Books

Port Coquitlam’s Brand New Used Bookstore

1. How long have you had this dream to open a local bookstore? As a child, Tamara used to sit with her mom, Patti, and dream about possibilities. One of them was opening a bookstore, so after Mom died and I was imagining career change, the idea of a bookstore came to me and it just settled in and stayed. Dianne has always wanted a bookstore too – to hang out, meet our QHLJKERXUV GLJ WKURXJK ER[HV DQG Ć“QG ROG ERRNV Together, when we get to travel or when we have a day off, used bookstores and bird sanctuaries are where we spend our time. So opening a book store is what we’ve done! 2. Has it turned out exactly as you hoped it would so far? Nothing is ever exactly what we hope for. It is usually better. Learning to run a small business is hard work! Even harder than hauling boxes of books! Every day brings us a new book, a new neighbor excited that we are here, and new challenges too. It is a joy to do work we love. 3. Where did the name Western Sky Books come from? Is there a special meaning behind it? There is a line in the song Defying Gravity, from the PXVLFDO :LFNHG Ĺ?LI \RX FDUH WR Ć“QG PH ORRN WR WKH Western Sky.â€? Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is proclaiming her power and her place. We love the Wicked Years books by Gregory McGuire, Dianne collects old Wizard of Oz books, and if you come in the store, chances are you just may get to know the music from both musicals. We’ll be painting a yellow brick road with the names of all the people who have supported us to get started. So, Oz geeks. That’s us. 4. What has the response been like from the community since you opened recently? 6LQFH RXU YHU\ Ć“UVW GD\ DW WKH 3RUW &RTXLWODP )DUPHUĹ?V Market, we have had nothing but enthusiastic support and encouragement. At least two people a day

Our events are well attended, so local writers are encouraged too, and we’ve had nothing but happy and pleased support from other small businesses. 5. It seems that not only are you passionate about books, but you’re also passionate about community. Can you tell me why community is so important to you? Is that why you created a space where people can come to connect with not books but other people? A vibrant community, where every person is valued, seen, has the opportunity to be heard, play, work, enjoy their family, friends and neighbours, can access art and nature, is the backbone of health and wellbeing. Bookstores are often part of the ecology of the arts and culture in communities, with overlaps between recreation, education, and just the plain fun RI VKRSSLQJ :H KRSH :HVWHUQ 6N\ %RRNV LV Ć“QGLQJ RXU SODFH LQ WKH H[LVWLQJ FXOWXUH RI 3RUW &RTXLWODP DQG WKH 7UL &LWLHV JHQHUDOO\ DQG WKDW E\ VWD\LQJ WUXH to our vision we will enhance and create new spaces of book and literary related awesomeness! We also hope we are the kind of business that gives back WR RXU FXVWRPHUV DQG QHLJKERXUV $V D Ć“QDO QRWH reading is deeply personal, but it also connects us to other readers across time and culture. Bookstores are the places where those connections to each other can start, through the pages of the books we choose to read and share. 6. Recently people were turning to e-devices for their books. Do you see people returning to printed books? What makes a printed book better than reading an e-book? Pssst ‌ here is a secret: people never put down their books. If someone is a reader, it is very likely they are also very curious and open to new ideas. So, of course, e-readers and other devices, which are

handy, lightweight, and useful would be embraced by people who read a lot, across genres and types of writing. The majority of people still sit down with their children to read story books, and there are now at least two generations of children who are adept at using both technologies to read. A lot of people say WKH\ XVH WKHLU H UHDGHU LQ YHU\ VSHFLĆ“F FLUFXPVWDQFHV like traveling, but they also say there is nothing like holding a book, from the smell of the pages to the type of paper to the cover papers. Books represent home, comfort and alone time, as well as communing with the larger community of readers and writers. All that being said, the business of books has changed drastically, and book sellers have to acknowledge that and keep innovating in order to stay relevant and keep customers coming back. 7. Do you offer any events? Storytimes? Workshops? We have all sorts of events: author readings, workshops, book launches, a monthly poetry slam. Our updated calendar can be found at www.
