PUBLISHER’S NOTE Welcome to What’s On! Port Coquitlam Premiere Issue!!

I’ve been enjoying these last two months getting to know so many more people in the community and I can’t wait to meet more of you and hear about your events, everything from the festivals right down to the school fairs. This is your magazine, Port Coquitlam, so please let us know about all the amazing groups and events that need to be included.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to be launching this magazine here. I’ve always dreamed of a career in publishing so getting the opportunity to own and publish my own magazine in a community that I love is an absolute dream come true for me.

This is just the beginning! I always knew that Port Coquitlam was very community Here’s to many more successful magazines that are all about focused and had lotsport of Coquitlam great family-friendly events Bike Routes and Connecting Road Networks running regularly, but I had no idea just how much was supporting the local community!

going on until I started the magazine. In addition to all the well-known parades and events, is the large number of community groups forNORTH people to become involved in and support. And we have made every effort to include as many of those groups as we could in our premiere issue. GREENMOUNT PARK

Since 1992 the Riverview Horticultural Centre Society has worked to increase public awareness of the Riverview Lands in Coquitlam with the goal of having the site preserved for the mentally ill and public community uses. Riverview has historically been a sanctuary for the mentally ill and it is hoped that it can once again be in the future. The Heritage Trees on the Riverview Lands form an irreplaceable asset for the people of BC complementing the Metro Vancouver Regional Park at Colony Farm as a regional green space for Greater Vancouver.

Catalpa & North-end Tree Tour Tree Tour - Last of the Season

All walks start at the HEY building at 1 pm unless stated otherwise.

There are more than 1800 catalogued trees at Riverview many of which are unique. Preservation of the site will enhance the quality of life in the Tri-Cities and beyond. The old Riverview Hospital is closed. This break from the past allows for the new Riverview to come into being. It’s a jewel of a site that’s far too good for anything but a compassionate, diverse care community for mental health treatment, education & healing. Brenda Guild Visit www.rhcs.org or call 604-290-9910 for more info. Join us at one of our scheduled tree tours. Help save this beautiful 244 acre site! May 2nd - 11th

CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITY The May Day Festival is a longstanding tradition in Port Coquitlam. In 2013 we celebrated the 90th annual May Day Festival along with the City’s Centennial. This year the fun and the traditions continue at the 91st annual May Day Festival. Although May Days has evolved since they began in 1923 the same community spirit continues to shine in this unique Port Coquitlam Festival.

Trolley Tour rides will also be offered as a fun way to learn a little history with narration provided by the Port Coquitlam Heritage society. Riders can get on and off at any of the 4 designated stops including Leigh Square and rides are free. May 11th is the Mother’s Day picnic at Lions Park. This is a fun and free family event full of activities and entertainment for children and their moms. A pancake breakfast, BBQ lunch will be available and there will be a variety of kid friendly activities and some special treats for moms. What a great opportunity to celebrate your family! As you can see, the May Day Festival is an exciting community event with something for everyone. For more details of all of the events check out our website at www.portcoquitlam.ca/mayday

This Festival begins with an Opening Ceremony on May 2nd and ends with a Mother’s Day picnic at Lions Park on May 11th 2014. The Opening Ceremony involves over 200 local school children who perform traditional May Pole dances they have been taught in their schools. The Royal Party also performs and the Mayor, May Queen and Ambassador officially open the festival. The ever popular Rotary May Day parade is on May 10th and officially begins at 11am. Come early as there is lots to do before the parade. Enjoy a family pancake breakfast in Leigh Square starting at 7am, run the May Day Mile along the parade route at 10 am(a one mile non - competitive run for all ages and fitness levels) and finish in time to watch the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Squad. The Leigh Square Community Block Party will follow the Parade. Entertainment, barbeque concessions and refreshments are available after the parade with live music by Greg Drummond and his band starting at 1pm. The entertainment continues all afternoon with a Community Showcase until 5pm at Leigh Square.

June is Bike Month Get Out and Have Fun!… …and of course, always wear your helmet! It’s a great opportunity to dust off that bike and explore Port Coquitlam on two wheels. Port Coquitlam’s bike routes offer something for every skill level—from wide, flat paved lanes to winding forest paths— and they connect to major amenities and business centres, making it a convenient way to get around the city. Hop on your bicycle to complete a few errands or as part of your commute – you’ll enjoy the trip and burn a few calories in the process. With the weather warming up, it’s time to rethink your stressful commute. What about cycling along tree-lined streets, trails and bike lanes instead of sitting in bumper-tobumper traffic? You’ll save money, get fit and help the environment.

It’s your neighbourhood. It’s your community. It’s right next door. It’s within a few kilometres of where you live. And one of the best ways to get to know it and be part of it, right on the ground, is to ride a bike. Riding a bike around the neighbourhood to shop and do errands, to go to appointments, soccer games, the community centre, movies and socializing is FUN. It’s also EASY, CHEAP, HEALTHY and makes a difference to your QUALITY of LIFE. Anything within 3 km of where you are can be reached in a comfortable 10-15 minute bike ride, even by casual cyclists (less if it’s downhill!). Get out, ride and have FUN!

The Traboulay PoCo Trail The 25-kilometre, Traboulay PoCo Trail encircles our community. This flat walking and cycling trail is suitable for exploring at any time of the year. The trail traverses a varied landscape that includes forest and creek, meadow and marsh, riverfront and urban development. The paved Downtown section winds through areas where local residents live, play and work. It’s well used by recreational users as well as bicycle commuters. From there, cycle through the serene and historic Colony Farm section, which features more than 150 bird species and is one of the most biodiverse parts of the region. It’s your chance to discover quiet, safe, beautiful routes for excursions or everyday trips. Feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Get fit. Save money. Fall in love with your commute.

What’s On! at the Make This Summer One To Remember! Sign up for summer camp at the BC SPCA and you’ll get to spend your days immersed in the world of animals. Play animal-themed games, meet animal experts and get crafty. Connect with new friends (both furry and human) and become the expert on animals in your family! Plus, everyone’s favourite part of summer camp… spending time with the animals! For one hour each day, you’ll have the chance to interact with some of the friendliest cats and small animals at the shelter, as well as some lovable dogs belonging to BC SPCA staff members.

Camps run July 2nd until August 22nd and registration is open now!

Don’t Miss Our Cheese and Wine Event!

Looking for a New Best Friend? Meet Eppie Lop Eared Male 3.5 years Handsome Eppie was surrendered to the BC SPCA by his previous owners when they had developed allergies to him. He is a curious bunny, and after lots of interaction from our volunteers has become a sociable boy! He can be easily scared in new surroundings, but he will open up once he is comfortable.

Introducing Iggy Adult Male 2.5 years Iggy was brought to the Quesnel SPCA when his previous owner moved, leaving him behind. Soon after, Iggy came to the Port Coquitlam SPCA from Quesnel through our Drive for Lives Programme. Unfortunately we don’t know anything about the kind of home he came from, but he is a very friendly, at times chatty boy who loves to rub and cuddle. He is very sweet and would love to go to a home where he can curl up next to you, getting all the attention his heart desires. Iggy is a bit too curious for the other cats, so he’d be best in a home with no other cats or very young children (under 8 years old).

Art Focus Artists’ Association is Proud to Present its

20th Annual Spring Art Show May 3rd & May 4th, 2014 • 11am to 5 pm

The Outlet, Leigh Square Arts Village, 1100-2253 Leigh Square Place, Downtown Port Coquitlam

Art Focus Artists’ Association of Port Coquitlam is a vibrant group of productive local artists who enjoy working in various mediums. The club was formed in 1993 by local working artists. At that time, there were only about 20 artists, interpreting life in oils, acrylic, watercolors and mixed media. Today, Art Focus makes its home in the beautiful Leigh Square Arts Village in historic Downtown Port Coquitlam. This friendly group has more than doubled in 20 years and is inclusive of all ages and ability. Members are as young as 30 years onwards. Some members have painted most of their lives and have made successful careers of art production. Artists here keep busy, meeting 3 times a month on Wednesday evenings. At these meetings, the business of art is discussed,

L.E.A.S.H

workshop evenings are available, and demonstrations of techniques by visiting professional artists are hosted. The public is most welcome to attend these free inspirational evenings which are held the 4th Wednesday of each month, except in July and August. Art Focus is community-oriented and strives to encourage young artists to pursue their studies in the Fine Arts. Through sales of art works at the annual spring and fall shows and 50-50 draws at meetings, money is raised to award Scholarship Grants each year to a deserving, talented graduate at each of Port Coquitlam’s 3 high schools. For more information please visit www.myartclub.com/art.focus Or telephone Val at 604.942.0537

Really Cares Meet Seven!

LEASH Animal Welfare Society is a registered BC non-profit Society serving Greater Vancouver & surrounding areas. We are a no-borders dog rescue working with both pups abroad in high-kill shelters, as well as local surrenders. We operate solely on the donations from caring individuals, the generosity of local businesses and the amazing volunteers involved in our Foster Care program.

Age: 3.5 years | Weight: 70 lbs | Breed: Pit Bull Mix | Kids: Older, Dogs: YES, Cats: Dog-savvy cats

Meet Billie! Age: 3 years | Breed: Chihuahua Mix | Kids: Yes, Dogs: Yes, Cats: Yes Billie is a people-loving girl who is independent but still enjoys being held. Her housetraining is coming along well and she needs a bit of leash-training, but she’s a sweet girl with tons of love to give! Billie isn’t a huge fan of the wet-and-cold outdoors and prefers to be inside with you. She sleeps great at night (loves to be in the human bed!).

Seven is a beautiful, friendly Pit Bull mix (possibly some Dane or Weimaraner in there!) who has lots of love to give. He’d love to have a nice back yard to play in and an active lifestyle full of fun walks and games! Seven needs a home experienced with Pit Bulls or large-breed dogs who can handle his size and work on his manners and training. He is currently a very cautious boy who is working on trust, but he’s also a loving, sensitive and snuggly boy who just wants to please.

If You Like Getting Out By The River Become A Riverwatcher! The RiverWatch Program is a non-technical community based initiative, which was started in late 1997. The Lower Coquitlam River Watershed has been divided into nineteen different reaches to be walked by RiverWatchers on a monthly basis. A map and description of the reaches is available with a RiverWatch Package. The Coquitlam River is very diverse and each reach may have a different kind of threat or a natural beauty. The RiverWatchers are asked to fill out a data sheet for each reach they walk which are available in paper form or can be sent and received via email on Microsoft Word. The data sheets are very easy to fill out and consist of the following topics: human activities, litter & pollutants, water quality, wildlife and general comments. The comments from the data sheets are used for our monthly newsletter that is distributed to all levels of government and our members. We hope you will find this an easy way to make a difference to your environment. Your watershed is a fragile entity that needs more and more protection and commitment from all of us that use it. If you would like more information on our group, please email Ian at imcart@telus.net or phone 604-939-4039.

The textile artworks of Gone Hooking are rooted in the lives of the early settlers who made beauty out of nothing and carry on the artisan tradition of joyful expression through rug hooking. This exhibition displays a renewed expression for tactile fibres and reveals the groups commitment to innovation and new ideas in textile art.

Art is an incredible way to demonstrate how the perception of the world varies from personality to personality. Mystique exhibits two artists, Ken McRae and Therese Lydia-Joseph who prove just how differently two people can experience and capture the natural world in art.

Lets SHARE

in Our Community! SHARE Family and Community Services would like to congratulate What’s On! on the launch of their Port Coquitlam magazine, and we wish them so much success with this and future issues. Our theme throughout this year has been IMAGINE... Most IMAGINE the food bank when they read or hear about SHARE’s services. The food bank is only one important service of so many that SHARE provides to the members of the Tri-Cities community. SHARE’s services are vast and inclusive of any member of the community who is need of a helping hand. Some of our services include intervention therapy for children who need help with their physical, speech or occupational development. We offer individual, couple and family counselling on a number of topics. Our Senior (60+) Program, offers assistance around the house, transportation to appointments and support groups. The New Beginnings Program is a welcoming and informative resource centre for Tri-Cities families who are a part of the Government-Assisted Refugee program. Take a moment to visit our websitewww.sharesociety. ca to read how we can help you, a loved one or a friend, or for information on how you can donate to SHARE, or volunteer to help us continue to do the work that we do.

IMAGINE...what you can do today to help someone in their greatest time of need tomorrow. We would love you to SHARE the fun at our many events this year. Like us on Facebook, check in at www.sharesociety.ca, we have 2 events in the Events Calendar at the front of the magazine! #200 – 25 King Edward Street (2nd Floor) Coquitlam • 604.540.9161 • www.sharesociety.ca
