Pear Tart Tatin

Pecan Pie - A Classic! Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes

What’s Recipe Page On! TM

Ingredients

FXS J R] H[WUD À QH VXJDU 1/8 cup / 40g / 1 1/3 oz cold butter, chopped 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g / 13 1/4 oz all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve

Method

Preheat oven to 400F / 200C / gas 6. Put a 8 inch / 21cm diameter frying pan with an ovenproof handle (this bit is important!) on a burner over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel coloury. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture. Turn the heat down and cook for 5–10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan. Roll out the pastry to about 1/4 inch / 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 10 inch / 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. Bake the pie in the oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the Whats On! • whatsonsurreyca@gmail.com tart onto the plate. Serve with cream. 9

Walk your way to weight loss Romi Singh Gill www.romigill.com

Everyone goes through time of splurging in unhealthy foods and lack of exercise. Unhealthy food feels like a reward and “laziness” or choosing to not exercise is the easier choice. What happens next?

What’s the best Exercise?

Bigger stomach, thighs, a little flap on the back side of our arms and a tire around our waist. Not only that, we also start getting tired quickly and have less focus.

- the one gets done. The thought of gym and treadmill and intense cardio probably makes your head spin. Which is why I am going to suggest the simplest human movement as exercise -

What’s worse than bad health and weight gain?

Walking.

Judgemental, and sometimes shameful, comments from friends and relatives. “How dare they talk about my weight”, you think. It happens to all of us. Not many people can stay in “fit” shape all year long. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Instead, answer this question:

Try the following ways to add more walking to your day: 1. Go for a walk for 15-30 minutes 2. Park your car farther way in a parking lot at stores, work etc 3. Take the stairs at work, if possible 4. Go to the gym and walk on treadmill

What are you going to do about your weight? Here’s 2 simple steps you can take to lose weight: 1. Cut out all sugary drinks and unhealthy foods, and add more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eat a whole food diet. 2. Exercise. I will suggest a simple exercise you can perform to lose weight.

10 RUBY - SURREY SEPT OCT 2018.indd 10

Spend two weeks doing simple walking for 15-30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. Next, try speed walking. One hour, 3-4 times a week is enough. Keep doing this regularly and you will lose some weight. And, if you’re looking to lose more weight, you need to incorporate a jogging intervals in your walk.

By Betty Crocker Kitchens INGREDIENTS Can (13.8 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated classic pizza crust Pepperoni slices (half of a 3.5-oz package) 1/4 Cup sliced ripe olives Cup shredded mozzarella cheese (8 oz) Can (8 oz) pizza sauce Cup refrigerated garlic Alfredo pasta sauce (from 10-oz container) STEPS • 1 - Heat oven to 400°F. Spray 14-inch round pizza pan with cooking spray. Unroll dough on pizza pan; shape into a round to desired thickness. • 2 - Bake 8 minutes. Arrange pepperoni and 3 tablespoons of the olives on crust to within 1 inch of edge.

Sprinkle cheese over pepperoni and olives. Evenly pour pizza sauce over crust; gently spread to cover toppings. • 3 - In small resealable food-storage plastic bag, place Alfredo sauce; seal bag. Cut off tiny corner of bag. Squeeze bag to drizzle Alfredo sauce in circles over pizza sauce, starting from outer edge continuously to the center. Pull knife through Alfredo sauce, starting from center to the outside edge, changing direction with every pull, to look like spider web. Sprinkle remaining 1 tablespoon olives on top to look like spiders. • 4 - Bake 8 to 12 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown. Cut into wedges to serve.

Crescent Mummy Dogs • Prep - 30 MIN • Total - 50 MIN • Servings - 10 Wrap up a hot dog in true mummy fashion in this fun Halloween take on classic Crescent Dogs. By Betty Crocker Kitchens

INGREDIENTS Can (8 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated Crescent Dough Sheet Slices American cheese, quartered (2.5 oz) Large hot dogs Cooking spray Mustard or ketchup, if desired STEPS • 1 - Heat oven to 375°F. • 2 - If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate at perforations, creating 4 rectangles. Press perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough; cut into 4 rectangles. • 3 - With knife or kitchen scissors, cut each rectangle lengthwise into 10 pieces, making a total of 40 pieces of dough. Slice cheese slices into quarters (1/2 slice cheese, cut in half). • 4 - Wrap 4 pieces of dough around each hot dog and 1/4 slice of cheese to look like "bandages," stretching dough slightly to completely cover hot dog. About 1/2 inch from one end of each hot dog, separate "bandages" so hot dog shows through for "face." On ungreased large cookie sheet, place wrapped hot dogs (cheese side down); spray dough lightly with cooking spray. • 5 - Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until dough is light golden brown and hot dogs are hot. With mustard, draw features on "face."
