MAKING MAPLE RIDGE A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY ave you ever been out shopping and noticed someone struggling to recall their PIN number at the cash register, or stopped to chat with someone who seems a little confused and needs directions? How we respond to our fellow citizens in these types of situations says a lot about us as a community, and the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie, Seniors Network wants you to know, we are better together.

H

Dementia affects approximately 62,000 British Columbians and by 2024, this number is expected to climb to 87,000, according to Ministry of Health Dementia data. In Maple Ridge, the number of people affected by dementia doubled between 2005 and 2015. “The majority continue to live in the community, either independently or with care partners. Our goal is to reduce stigma and make the city more compassionate

24

and inclusive,” explains Seniors Network Coordinator, Heather Treleaven. Stigma around dementia exists, in part, due to a lack of awareness or understanding of the condition. Supported by the City of Maple Ridge, the Dementia Friendly Community plan will help make the city a place where people living with dementia, their families and caregivers feel supported, connected, comfortable and safe. “It takes a lot of courage to face this type of stigma and this project is being led by SHRSOH ZLWK GHPHQWLD ZKR WHOO XV ÀUVW KDQG about the barriers they face. We know a little education, patience, and kindness can go a long way toward making the community better for everyone.”

Method To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavy-bottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a strainer to remove the seeds. To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint. Alternative serving method - pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the strainer, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint.
