Intergenerational Garden Grows Vegetables, Knowledge and Friendships!

The first signs of spring are showing themselves in the lower mainland and sparking excitement among the senior volunteers and student gardeners at the Intergenerational Garden in Maple Ridge. This is the beginning of the Garden’s eighth season, growing vegetables, berries, flowers and friendships. The Garden was constructed by the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie, Seniors Network to provide an opportunity for seniors to share their experience and knowledge with younger generations. Over the past few years, programming has expanded to include growing produce specifically for the Friends in Need Food Bank. “A lot of the Garden’s produce is ready during July and August when the students are on summer vacation,” explains Garden Coordinator, Heather Jonatschick. “The volunteers harvest and preserve a lot for the students to enjoy when they return in September, but there is still produce to share with the Food Bank. In fact, with funding from Food Banks Canada, the two groups formalized this relationship last year and new beds were constructed at the garden to grow produce specifically for the Food Bank. “The Plant a Row, Grow a Row, Share a Row program is something every gardener in the community can participate in,” says Jonatschick. “We can all “Grow a Row” for the Friends in Need Food Bank this summer!”

14

If you need help getting your garden started, plan to attend the Seedy Saturday Seed Exchange event at the Intergenerational Garden on March 16. Like-minded community members come together to trade seeds, gardening books and share tips. A master gardener will be on hand to answer questions. In early March, the Intergenerational Garden also hosts its annual spring plant sale to help raise funds to keep the garden growing. They sell excellent quality plants sure to help make your garden beautiful. The order deadline is April 13 and plant pick up will be perfectly timed near Mother’s Day! Visit www.seniors-network.ca to view the catalogue and order form. “Time spent at the Intergenerational Garden digging in the earth and helping the students brings connected learning, patience and respect to our future generations.” If you enjoy gardening and would like to get involved, please contact Heather Jonatschick, Garden Coordinator by email: gardencoord@gmail. com or call: (604) 837-8915. The Intergenerational Garden is located at 22527 121 Ave. in Maple Ridge.

FACTOIDS 1. During the spring, birds are more vocal as they sing to attract mates and warn away rivals. 2. The word “season” is from the Latin sationem meaning “sowing” or “seed time.” 3. While December is the most popular time to get engaged, late spring (June) and fall (September) are the most popular months to get married. 4. According to tradition, if a groundhog does not see his shadow after emerging from his burrow on Groundhog Day (February 2), spring will come early; if he sees his shadow, winter will last for 6 more weeks. 5. While some people prefer not to feed birds in spring and summer, during the spring migration, a feeder might be a useful source of food for traveling birds.

6. Spring almost always arrives on March 20 or 21, but sometimes on the 19th. The reason the equinoxes and solstices don’t always come on the same day is that Earth doesn’t circle the sun in exactly 365 days. 7. There’s more daylight during spring because the earth’s axis tilts toward the sun at this time of the year. 8. On the first day of spring, the sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart everywhere on earth. 9. Spring fever isn’t just a saying – experts say the body’s makeup changes due to different diets, hormone production and temperature. 10. The first spring flowers are usually daffodils, dandelions, lilies, tulips, iris and lilacs.

To make the dough: Heat the milk in a pan until hot but not boiling. Remove from the heat. Add the butter stir until melted. When the liquid has cooled to tepid, beat in the egg and half the orange zest. Mix the strong flour, yeast, 1/2-1 tsp salt (depending on taste) and the sugar in a large bowl. Pour in the liquid and stir to make a soft dough. Knead the dough for 5-10 mins on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. (you can use a mixer with a dough attachment if you have one). Oil a large bowl and place the kneaded dough inside it, then cover with oiled cling wrap. Leave in a warm place for about 1 hr or until the dough has doubled in size. Place the raisins and half the orange juice in a small pan and simmer gently for a few minutes. Allow to cool completely. Mix the cinnamon with 2 tbsp sugar and the remaining zest. Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and press it out to a large rectangle, approx 12” x 9”. Scatter it evenly with the drained raisins, and cinnamon-sugar mix. Roll the dough around the filling, then knead it well for a few mins until the fruit and spices are evenly spread. Grease and line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a bun making the top as smooth as possible. Place the buns, smooth-side up, on the baking sheet, leaving room for rising. Cover loosely with oiled cling wrap and leave in a warm place for 30-45 mins or until the dough has risen and doesn’t spring back quickly when prodded gently. Meanwhile preheat oven to 190C/170C fan - 375F/350F fan - gas 5. Make the paste for the crosses by gradually stirring 6-7 tbsp water into the flour to make a smooth, thick paste, then put in an icing bag or small plastic food bag then snip off the corner to about 0.5cm / 0.2”. Pipe the crosses, then bake for 20-25 mins until the buns are risen and dark golden brown. Mix the remaining orange juice with the remaining sugar and let it dissolve. Brush the syrup over the buns while they are still hot, then leave to cool. Eat on the day of baking or serve toasted the next day.
