TEDxChilliwack ready for year three By Adam Louis
There are ideas brewing in Chilliwack right now, and you don't even know it. Fortunately for inventors, entertainers and great thinkers in the Fraser Valley, though, the next great ideas are about to be unleashed once again.
The third annual TEDxChilliwack event is coming this spring, in its initial stages in January. “TED” stands for technology, entertainment and design, and the symposium welcomes speakers in any of these fields to pitch their next great idea before a live audience. According to co-organizer Berris Karden, the TED events are very well attended and equally well-received in Chilliwack. The first event was at the Chilliwack Museum in 2016 and expanded to the G.W. Graham Theatre in 2017 to accommodate a roughly 270-person crowd. This year's theme is Time to Reboot. While the application process has closed as of December 1, 2017, Chilliwack residents can participate in the next round in January at the Cottonwood 4 Cinemas. On January 18, 25 and February 1 from 5 pm to 7 pm, 13 speakers per night will have three minutes to deliver an “elevator pitch” of their next great idea before an audience and a panel of judges. The audience will choose their favourites at the end of the nights, and those chosen few will then move on to an intensive training session with the coaches to prepare them for the main event in April. Karden said there were about 70 people who applied for April's event, which is a “phenomenal” response.

The particular aspect that makes Chilliwack's TEDx event unique from the others all over the world is its audition process. While most TEDx events would host curated speakers who were invited to the event, Chilliwack hosted an open audition in which anyone can apply to become a TEDx speaker, provided they could fit within a technology, entertainment or design session. Karden said the audition process offers speakers a public platform they may not otherwise have to show their idea to the world.
worldwide stage. As for the attendees, in the midst of disappointing news, pessimism and difficulties within the community, they get to witness the best and brightest Chilliwack has to offer; a positive view that may otherwise go unearthed. Since its inception in 1984, TED talks have become a worldwide phenomenon. Karden said during any given weekend, there are approximately 20 to 30 TEDx talks happening around the world.
“This community has so many great ideas and so many different things begin worked on right under your nose,” Karden said. As an example, Karden highlighted the talk of Dr. Alison Vaughan, whose idea of “potty training cows -” getting the cattle to “do their business” in one designated area to make cleanup easier – gained more than 10,000 views over its lifetime so far.
Tickets to the January talks at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas are free and can be reserved online. Tickets to the April 14th event can also be purchased online.
Though the event is still in its early years, Karden believes TEDx's positive influence will only grow stronger as time goes on.
For ticket information, previous TEDx video archives and much more, visit TEDx Chilliwack online at
Karden said the tickets sold out every night last year and he expects the same response this year, so anyone interested should act quickly.

For speakers, TEDx provides a venue for their idea and a professionally filmed, coached speech delivering their great idea in a clear, concise and clean video published online for all to see. Speakers gain confidence in public speaking and the talk can serve as a stepping stone to bringing their great idea to the next level and on to a

Resolve By Adam Louis
A brand new year is upon us, dear readers! For a long time, I upheld the virtue of New Year’s resolutions. Why not, right? A brand new year brings brand new opportunities to create a new you; it’s a clean slate! But in recent years, I’ve more or less decided against it. It’s not laziness that compels me to do so. Well, maybe it’s laziness, a little bit; I’m a busy man, after all. No, the whole point of New Year’s resolutions is to set goals toward improving yourself. Maybe you want to lose weight (guilty). Maybe it’s time to get rid of that bad habit (right there with you). Maybe you’ve been sitting on a novel or two and haven’t had the wherewithal to just wrap it up already. Okay, maybe that last one was just me, but you get the picture. The thing is you can make these resolutions any time. That’s not to disparage those who choose the New Year as the first day of the rest of their lives. If that’s your thing, good for you! No, this is to give hope to the rest of us, too. The day you choose to improve yourself is the day you can start to live out your every-day resolutions. You’re in the driver’s seat of your life. You’re adults (or you’re getting there) and that means it’s your turn to decide what being a grown-up is. If you don’t like where you are, get up off your duff and do something about it, today, on New Year’s Day...whatever it takes, set your goals and go for it! Take little steps at a time, every day, consistently and you’ll be surprised how far you can go by the time the next New Year rolls around. Until next time, dear readers, don’t forget to be awesome and always be excellent to each other.

Love Where You Live With Your Neighbourhood Grant Program In order to build vibrant and connected neighbourhoods within Chilliwack, City Council established the Neighbourhood Grant Program in 2016. Through matching grant funding, the Neighbourhood Grant Program supports locally driven projects that are planned, implemented and managed by and for the neighbourhood. There are two types of grants:
Celebration and Activity Grant Program A connected neighbourhood contributes to the quality of life of all neighbours and makes the neighbourhood a more dynamic and safer place to be. The Celebration and Activity Grant Program supports residents and organizations that have small but powerful ideas to bring people together and make their community a more vibrant place to be. Events and activities should engage, educate and celebrate community members. For example, a block party would be eligible. Block parties aren’t just for the summer. The colder seasons offer some block party activities that you just don’t get in the summer. Consider conquering the cold with your neighbours and hosting a hot chocolate social or ugly sweater party. If you’re still seeking inspiration for your neighbourhood, a few events supported by the Celebration and Activity Grant Program so far have been the Garrison Festival, Pop Up in the Park, Fairfield Island Dance Under the Stars and numerous block parties all over the city.
Grass Roots Grant Program The Grass Roots Grant Program focuses on resident-led neighbourhood projects that will reinvigorate neighbourhoods or make public areas more beautiful and usable. The program encourages residents to get involved, connect with their neighbours and take action to make their neighbourhoods even better places to live. Grass Roots Grants can only be considered for projects on municipal (public) lands. Last summer, a group of residents used the grant to expand the Third Avenue Park playground. The grant made it possible to add play elements like the Whirl and Twirl and a brand new seesaw to the existing playground structures. Now, the newly expanded play area features more opportunities for kids to play! Do you have an idea to enhance your neighbourhood? Visit chilliwack.com/neighbourhoodgrants to learn more about the Neighbourhood Grant Program and how to apply. /Chilliwack

hilliwack is well known for many things – its astonishing natural, scenic beauty, the wealth of outdoor recreational pursuits, and our friendly people. It’s no wonder that people are moving here by the droves. But did you know that Chilliwack was also home to one of the greatest archeologists of the 20th century? Yes, that’s right... Chilliwack can be proud to have our own “Indiana Jones,” Dr. Homer A. Thompson. Homer Thompson was born in 1906, and his family soon relocated from Ontario to Rosedale, where they established a family farm. Graduating from Chilliwack High School at the tender age of 14, Homer went on to study at UBC and the University of Michigan, with the eminent Classicist and Archeologist Benjamin Meritt. From there, “H.A.T.,” as he was affectionately referred to by his colleagues, pioneered the archeology of the Athens agora, spending the lion’s share of his career in Greece. He forged a lasting partnership – both professional and in marriage – with Dr. Dorothy Burr, another cutting-edge American
During the Second World War, Homer served in British Naval Intelligence, and it is there that his swashbuckling adventures earn many of the comparisons with the Indiana Jones character played famously by Harrison Ford. In the 1950s, when they led a painstaking historic reconstruction of the Stoa of Attilus, Homer selected B.C. Douglas Fir timbers to support the roof systems – since the cedars of Lebanon were no longer available. All the while, Homer stayed in contact with his Chilliwack roots, writing letters to The Tattler, the student newspaper of CSS. Making a lasting contribution in his field, Homer A. Thompson is certainly someone who did Chilliwack proud.

2017-2018 Sardis Secondary is asking for your support in helping other student athletes have that opportunity while attending School. We are asking you to consider making a donation to put the Sardis Falcons Football program on a solid financial foundation. Rick Klassen while attending Sardis Secondary School, then later playing together at Simon Fraser University. Rick was an outstanding athlete with exceptional drive and talent that carried him to a professional career in the Canadian Football League with the BC Lions, starting as a territorial protection in 1981. Sadly he passed last year due to a battle with cancer, it was through Rick’s passing that Sardis Secondary’s Athletic Director Brad Geary felt that it was time to once again start up the Sardis Football Program in memory of Rick. We hope that you will make a donation on his behalf to help start up the Sardis Falcons Football Program. I know the students will appreciate it and we know that the future players who suit up for the Sardis Falcons Football Program will as well. Thank you for your consideration to the above and we hope to see you by the field supporting these young athletes. Everyone Deserves the opportunity to build a better life. Too many families spend their days struggling to keep an affordable roof over their heads. That struggle often involves agonizing choices. Choices like do they heat their home this month or do they pay the rent? Second jobs, extra shifts. Moves to neighborhoods that are less safe, where schools might not be as good. Deeper debt. Less spent on health care and healthy food. Too many children for too few rooms. Unsafe, rodent or bug infested, inadequate housing. When housing isn’t affordable and secure, families suffer. You can help Habitat provide a hand up—not a hand out, by volunteering, donating, and shopping and donating to ReStore!
What are Habitat ReStores, and how does it help my community? ReStores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. You save money and you are helping build homes for local families. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is diverted from your local landfill. How much do ReStores reduce wastage? Last year Habitat saved 36,000 tons of materials from our Canadian landfills Habitats’ ReStores in Abbotsford and Chilliwack cover all administration, management and fundraising costs for our affiliate. Plus, they contribute money to buy land and build homes. This ensures that 100% of every cash donation goes directly to build homes. What type of items can be donated to my ReStore? Stores accept a wide range of new and gently used items. Commonly donated items include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances and more. To donate goods, please send pictures to restoredonate@habitatufv.ca. Donations may be dropped off or we can pick up.
