Sanjha Vehra WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION In 2002 a group of ladies started a kitty party where they would get together for a snack and a chat. Since then, the tradition of getting women together for a purposeful gathering took place, and hence Sanjha Vehra (common courtyard) was started. We have been in operation since 2002. Sanjha Vehra Women’s Association is a non-profit organization that meets monthly. We make new friends, have fun together by singing, dancing and sharing recipes, jokes. We also educate South Asian women on various topics concerning day to day life issues, with visits from professionals. Our members can come together and share their thoughts, stories, ideas, and concerns involving issues in our community. Our members enjoy the activities we plan such as: bowling, field trips, potluck picnics, and much more. Since 2005 we have run a fundraiser every year for breast cancer research. A cure to this disease may take days or decades, but these answers will only be uncovered through further research — research that Surrey Hospital, Outpatient Foundation, the Canadian Breast Cancer Association, and organizations like us continue to fund. We also have been donating for Juvenile Diabetes, to local food banks, and many other charitable associations.

DANCING WITH LIFE By: C.V. Redlin
Today I took a dance with Life In which he grasped my hand And lead me through many a magical realm To some untrodden land There was no tune But the beating of my heart Which served as rhythm to our song And sunrays broke the sky as he smiled While he urged me to come along Now don’t get me wrong Life did not lead me Nor did I command him where to go, Rather we strode together in perfect sync To the universe’s almighty flow We twirled and spun in the afternoon sun We tangoed until we fell And he gave me a final breath with a subtle wink And told me that I had done well
Then approached Death from the sidelines Dressed sharply, black tux, hair smoothed with gel A ringing melody followed his every movement The song of a silver bell I’ll be honest I had my doubts Until Life leaned over and whispered, “give him a chance” And I couldn’t help myself but blush As he proffered his hand And kindly asked me to dance

you had that distant look in your eye basking in the sun we sit not a single word we mutter my legs I kick you lie down eyes closed I look to your hands which I yearn to hold your mouth opens and we talk childish conversations about likes and wants your voice then becomes serious you talk about the past of what you miss mentioning a girl and your broken parts my hands held to my chest a pang in my heart the way you talk about her and that look on your face clearly the spot beside you was never my place
ON A MOUNTAIN TOP By: Vera Sutton
The mountain tops move away From my view for eternity. The sun sparks on crystals, Drapes in veils of perfection A valley of brides, wedded for a season. Expectant I breathe. Joy courses with my heart beat. The boys, all three, disappear, A processional, over the edge, Their boards carving their hearts In the snow. Laughter the hymn That floats back to me. I follow.

Bee Mindful When It Comes To…
The Local Buzz by C.V. Redlin
on Bees ...
Stop! Take a breath. What do you smell? Is it a fresh breeze making its way in through the window? Perhaps damp earth from recent rainfall? Or maybe even the light perfume of flowers? If so, Spring has finally arrived.
Bee Mindful
As the natural world slowly wakes up from its winter slumber, a key player is already out working behind the scenes: the bees.
Being Mindful Means: Create a pollinator-friendly garden for the birds, bees and butterflies.
Sadly, they are starving.
Don’t cut dandelions! In early spring, they are the first and sometimes only source of food for honey bees and other pollinators.
Just as we want breakfast when we get up, bees also need a stable source of food after hibernation. Fun Fact: To make 1 pound of honey, 2 million flowers must be visited! According to local South Surrey resident and bee specialist Dr. Iman Tabari, dandelions are a crucial meal for bees. Why is such a commonplace weed so important? Well, for exactly that reason; dandelions are everywhere! Before plants, trees, and flowers bloom, dandelions are readily available for bees to access. That said, we unconsciously put the bees in jeopardy in the pursuit of a well-trimmed, perfect lawn. For this reason, Dr. Tabari has provided us with some ways we can be mindful to help the birds and bees flourish around us. Website: https://www.bcbhoneyfarm.com/ Email: Info@bcbhoneyfarms.com Phone: 604-722-6867

We are sharing our cities, parks, and gardens with birds and bees. They were here before us, and therefore it’s our responsibility to make sure they survive. Honeybees and other bee species are declining, mainly because of habitat loss. You can make a difference just by creating a bee-friendly space in your garden.
Don’t use unnecessary pesticides and herbicides in your garden and on your farm. Don’t buy any genetically modify pest-resistant plants. Plant flowers which produce pollen and nectar for bees. Have blooms from spring through fall: Don’t limit your garden to an end-of-July colour extravaganza. You’ll need a diversity of native nectar plants to flower over a few months. Make sure you always have blooming flowers and a source of water for birds and bees in your garden.
-Dr. Iman Tabari
Please, take a moment to stop and bee mindful this spring! For more information about how you can get involved in saving bees and the amazing health benefits of cold extract raw honey, visit BCB Honey Farms at:

T
he Spring Equinox is celebrated each year in the Northern Hemisphere on March 19 or 20. “Equinox” is a Latin word meaning “equal night” and it is set on one of these dates every year regardless of the different time zones. The first day of spring this year is Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Is the Spring Equinox really the first day of spring? Astronomically speaking, the answer is “yes”. The year is divided up into 4 parts and according to the sun’s position the seasons are set. However, meteorologically speaking the first day of spring is March 1st. The meteorological seasons are based on average temperatures, not the position of the sun. Find out more about the Zodiacal Light and the first day of spring from this video made in
2017: https://youtu.be/3J0H80Cwg9Q Whenever you celebrate the spring, we are always ready to shed winter clothes and welcome more sun into our lives. Here in Canada it’s best not to shed those winter coats too soon. The temperatures can still dip down after March. Some people celebrate the start of spring with spring festivals, parades or hikes. While Mardi Gras is actually linked to Easter, a religious holiday, the revelry surrounding the Mardi Gras parades and celebrations is definitely a fun time for all. Are there local celebrations for the first day of spring where you live? Let us at “What’s On! Surrey/White Rock” know about them, OK? Email whatsonwrss@gmail.com

GETTING TO KNOW YOU INTERVIEW WITH
SHELL BUSEY BY APRIL LEWIS www.surreyhospice.com
“I’VE ALWAYS BEEN INVOLVED WITH TOOLS…I’M THE BIGGEST TOOL AROUND!”
all know him as B.C. Hydro’s Power Smart spokesman, who is in favor of building the Site C dam.
Self-effacing words from the friendly giant with the booming voice. At 6 feet, 6 inches, Shell Busey is a household name to millions of Canadians as an author and media personality.
He created the House Smart Home Services Referral Network and you can watch his 158 Podcasts at www.askshell.com Shell has always been active in his community. He currently volunteers on the Board of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and remains involved in many other charitable organizations such as Surrey Hospice.
There is nothing Shell doesn’t know about home improvement and renovations. With his familiar folksy style, he can answer any question from ‘how to cope with moisture in your home’ to ‘replacing a sink faucet’. In his own words, “It’s just that easy!”
His latest venture, apart from opening his own museum in the spring, is Shell Busey’s Tool Box in downtown Cloverdale. This is a thrift store for new and gently-used tools where all proceeds go directly to Surrey Hospice. Shell invites you to donate.
Sheldon Emerson Busey was born 75 years ago in Owen Sound, Ontario. Shell wasn’t crazy about school; he would much rather be working with his hands or tinkering with tools. After graduating from a local vocational college, Shell got his first real job at Beaver Lumber.
It’s just that easy.
And the rest is history. In 1974, he transferred with Beaver Lumber to Surrey with his attractive, much shorter wife, Frankie, and their two small daughters. He was successful in converting five stores into a newer competitive cash-and-carry model prevalent in the building lumber industry at the time.
And what does every successful man do after such a feat? He quit his job. Unemployed, with two kids and a mortgage. Reinventing himself, one day he asked the owner of a Windsor Plywood store if he could use his phone. The next thing you know, Shell has bought the store! Under the Build-It Centre name Shell appeared at the PNE for 17 years where he converted the Modern Living building into a Home Ideas building. He became the guy you turned to for all your home-related questions. As Shell would say, the “How To, What To, Where To, Why To, When To and Who To”. And radio fame came calling. At the age of 41, Shell began his first weekly on-air home improvement program on CJOR 600. He soon moved to the top-rated CKNW where he ended his 30- year radio career. And we

Applying for disability tax credit is as easy as 123
B
What is the disability tax credit? The disability tax credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. An individual may claim the disability amount once they are eligible for the DTC. This amount includes a supplement for persons under 18 years of age at the end of the year.

The purpose of the DTC is to provide for greater tax equity by allowing some relief for disability costs, since these are unavoidable additional expenses that other taxpayers don’t have to face. Being eligible for the DTC can open the door to other federal, provincial, or territorial programs such as the registered disability savings plan, the working income tax benefit, and the child disability benefit.
Who is eligible for the DTC? You are eligible for the DTC only if we approve Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate. A medical practitioner has to fill out and certify that you have a severe and prolonged impairment and must describe its effects. Answer a few questions to find out if the person with the disability may be eligible. If we have already told you that you are eligible, do not send another form unless the previous period of approval has ended or if we tell you that we need one. You should tell us if your medical condition improves and you no longer meet the criteria for the DTC. The CRA does not charge any fees to process your forms, however, your qualified practitioner may charge a fee to complete it.
Note If you receive Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan disability benefits, workers’ compensation benefits, or other types of disability or insurance benefits, it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for the DTC. These programs have other purposes and different criteria, such as an individual’s inability to work.

ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH YOUR MONEY? Throughout my life, I have learned that one of the most important relationships that I need to cultivate outside of my primary relationships with my family and loved ones has been my relationship to the money I attract into my life. Yes, relationship with money. Yes, that I attract into my life. and workshops. It is fun, thought provoking. It can be a platform that will inform & educate all of us with what is happening to the world economically and how it affects our families’ day by day.
We have very qualified and reputable financial advisors in our midst to help us strategically place our hard-earned money in RSP’s, RESP’s TFSA’s RRIF’s and numerous investment vehicles with acronyms that I will never understand. But I am here to say that I have learned to treat my money like I would treat my best friend because I want it to be there when I need it the most. And I treat it with respect and integrity. To me, this means being conscious of how I spend it, save it, donate it, use it for good or not. Do I use it to contribute to someone’s life? Do I use it to make a difference in this world? Why? Because I am passionate about personal freedom and an abundance of money or the lack of it determines our quality of life, the choices we make with and for our families, the education that we can and cannot have, our options for better health and the list goes on. It is more often, than not, about the money. And I believe there is a disconnect now, more than ever between money earned, money saved, and money spent. Having an abundance of money gives you time freedom and you are restricted when you do not have it.
As a baby boomer, I am incredibly grateful for the strong work ethic I inherited from my parents, the new world of entrepreneurship, and a second chance to be financially astute. The management of money was never taught in school while I was growing up and for working families that is still true. What legacies will we leave the next generation? Call today for a 30-min. complimentary money coaching session and stay tuned for upcoming Seminars in White Rock & South Surrey. Profession: 30+ years in Sales & Marketing. 20+ years in Life Insurance marketing for an International Insurance Company. Money Coach, Entrepreneur and kid at heart.

COMFORT KEEPERS “I saw an opportunity to work for myself and at the same time, help people.” Heather Martin, owner/operator of Comfort Keepers in Vancouver and White Rock loves helping others and doesn’t see it as work at all. Having experienced ageism herself, Heather knows the value seniors add to our community. Comfort Keepers strives to make a positive impact and difference in the lives of each senior and family they help. Comfort Keepers knows that every situation and every senior is different and requires a care program which is customized and tailored for them individually. Their Interactive Caregiving® program does just that. As seniors age, it is often normal for them to become less active, feel lonely and begin losing their sense of self. Comfort Keepers knows that the mind-body connection is critical to their overall well-being and quality of life. With the Interactive Caregiving® program, the friendly and professional caregivers of Comfort Keepers create and participate in a variety of activities with the senior in order to help them regain or enhance their independence. Comfort Keepers is in the business of assisting the senior population throughout the Lower Mainland to age gracefully and independently whether it be at home, a retirement residence, long term care facility or even temporarily while in hospital.
But Comfort Keepers offers so much more than just direct client care. Heather is pleased to announce that they have been accredited with Exemplary Standing with Accreditation Canada. This designation means they are meeting the highest standard of excellence in health care using a client-centered approach while offering security and peace of mind to their clients and families. And they are very involved with the community. As an active member of the Semiahmoo Seniors Planning Table, Comfort Keepers volunteered to chair the committee when United Way withdrew its funding. They organize the Community Resources Pop-Up Caravans, For the Health of It Resource Fair and the Coffee and Connect bus tours with the aim of breaking the isolation of older adults and promoting socialization as they learn about important resources that are available to them in their community. They have organized two screenings of the movie The Age of Love about Speed Dating for Seniors and have hosted two speed dating events locally! Comfort Keepers…the care you need wherever you call home.
