Michelle’s Music Page DO YOU PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? THE ANSWER IS YES, AND THIS APPLIES TO EVERYONE!

SINGING CREATES FEELINGS OF PLEASURE AND ALLEVIATES STRESS

people start learning a musical instrument in Some school, and others study further with private lessons,

What we are beginning to discover is that singing both soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits. The elation may come from chemicals in the brain released by singing, which is associated with feelings of pleasure and has been found to alleviate anxiety and stress. These hormones also enhance feelings of trust and bonding, which may explain why we have found that singing lessens feelings of depression and loneliness.

but before all that - you were a singer.

Have you noticed babies respond with such happiness to hearing a tune, and will burble to themselves? This is our first exposure to the magic of music.

Striving to be a great vocalist is a wonderful goal, but actually belting out a tune is where you will find happiness and relaxation. Consider joining a choir or forming your own group of friends that like to sing, it doesn’t have to be formal or require complicated music charts. And don’t be shy, music - like beauty - is in the eye of the beholder. And you are the beholder!

Sanjha Vehra WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION In 2002 a group of ladies started a kitty party where they would get together for a snack and a chat. Since then, the tradition of getting women together for a purposeful gathering took place, and hence Sanjha Vehra (common courtyard) was started. We have been in operation since 2002. Sanjha Vehra Women’s Association is a non-profit organization that meets monthly. We make new friends, have fun together by singing, dancing and sharing recipes, jokes. We also educate South Asian women on various topics concerning day to day life issues, with visits from professionals. Our members can come together and share their thoughts, stories, ideas, and concerns involving issues in our community. Our members enjoy the activities we plan such as: bowling, field trips, potluck picnics, and much more. Since 2005 we have run a fundraiser every year for breast cancer research. A cure to this disease may take days or decades, but these answers will only be uncovered through further research — research that Surrey Hospital, Outpatient Foundation, the Canadian Breast Cancer Association, and organizations like us continue to fund. We also have been donating for Juvenile Diabetes, to local food banks, and many other charitable associations.

MISSION STATEMENT: Sanjha Vehra Women’s Association was incorporated on January 10th, 2006. The purpose of our ASSOCIATION is: To provide a forum for South Asian Women to exchange ideas, discuss, and lobby issues and problems relating to their participation in Canadian Society. To meet new friends, share experiences, and have fun together. To raise funds in any way for charitable donation. Monthly meetings are held on the first Sunday of the month from 2-4 p.m. at a designated venue. Become a Sanjha Vehra Member. Bring your talent to enrich our common courtyard.

The Turbaned Riders Y

ou see them freewheeling down open roads with their beards flowing and their turbans held high. It's the Turbaned Riders of the Sikh Motorcycle Club, which is dedicated to promoting safe and enjoyable motorcycle riding. Their goal is also to help injured motorcyclists in cooperation with AIM (Association of Injured Motorcyclists) and enhancing communication and initiating discussions with all Canadians to bring awareness and understanding about the Sikh religion and the significance of the Turbans. The Sikh Motorcycle club is the only one of its kind in all of Canada. The club came about due to the efforts of Mr. Avtar Singh Dhillon, who on July 7th’ 1999, after many years of campaigning and educating governmental organizations, earned the right for practicing Sikhs who wear a turban to be exempt from mandatory helmet laws in the Province of British Columbia while riding a motorcycle. The vision of the Sikh Motorcycle Club was established in 2002 when a popular Punjabi radio broadcaster from Surrey BC, Harjinder Singh Thind, invited a small group of motorcycle enthusiasts to make a documentary on Sikh

motorcyclists who wore turbans while riding their free-wheeling motorcycles. In 2003, this group began meeting on a regular basis and started participating in local rides under the banner of “Royal Enfield Riders.” A few months later, they decided to inaugurate the “Sikh Motorcycle Club.” Amritpal Singh Randhawa, Kulwinder Singh Khangura, Avtar Singh Gill, Malkit Singh Rai and Harjinder Singh Thind were the founding members of this club. Since then, the club began holding regular meetings and started organizing rides throughout the spring and summer seasons. Additionally, as the club has grown over the last few years, the club members have committed to participating in community charity events and began outreach efforts to other community organizations. Today, there are over 100 members in the Sikh Motorcycle Club from all over British Columbia, and the club continues to grow.

DANCING WITH LIFE By: C.V. Redlin Today I took a dance with Life In which he grasped my hand And lead me through many a magical realm To some untrodden land There was no tune But the beating of my heart Which served as rhythm to our song And sunrays broke the sky as he smiled While he urged me to come along Now don’t get me wrong Life did not lead me Nor did I command him where to go, Rather we strode together in perfect sync To the universe’s almighty flow We twirled and spun in the afternoon sun We tangoed until we fell And he gave me a final breath with a subtle wink And told me that I had done well

Then approached Death from the sidelines Dressed sharply, black tux, hair smoothed with gel A ringing melody followed his every movement The song of a silver bell I’ll be honest I had my doubts Until Life leaned over and whispered, “give him a chance” And I couldn’t help myself but blush As he proffered his hand And kindly asked me to dance

HEARTS IN THE SAND By: Queenie Le sitting at the shore throwing rocks we sit on the log and talk you stare deep into the ocean and sigh

you had that distant look in your eye basking in the sun we sit not a single word we mutter my legs I kick you lie down eyes closed I look to your hands which I yearn to hold your mouth opens and we talk childish conversations about likes and wants your voice then becomes serious you talk about the past of what you miss mentioning a girl and your broken parts my hands held to my chest a pang in my heart the way you talk about her and that look on your face clearly the spot beside you was never my place

ON A MOUNTAIN TOP By: Vera Sutton The mountain tops move away From my view for eternity. The sun sparks on crystals, Drapes in veils of perfection A valley of brides, wedded for a season. Expectant I breathe. Joy courses with my heart beat. The boys, all three, disappear, A processional, over the edge, Their boards carving their hearts In the snow. Laughter the hymn That floats back to me. I follow.

Bee Mindful When It Comes To…

The Local Buzz by C.V. Redlin

on Bees ...

Stop! Take a breath. What do you smell? Is it a fresh breeze making its way in through the window? Perhaps damp earth from recent rainfall? Or maybe even the light perfume of flowers? If so, Spring has finally arrived.

Bee Mindful

As the natural world slowly wakes up from its winter slumber, a key player is already out working behind the scenes: the bees.

Being Mindful Means: Create a pollinator-friendly garden for the birds, bees and butterflies.

Sadly, they are starving.

Don’t cut dandelions! In early spring, they are the first and sometimes only source of food for honey bees and other pollinators.

Just as we want breakfast when we get up, bees also need a stable source of food after hibernation. Fun Fact: To make 1 pound of honey, 2 million flowers must be visited! According to local South Surrey resident and bee specialist Dr. Iman Tabari, dandelions are a crucial meal for bees. Why is such a commonplace weed so important? Well, for exactly that reason; dandelions are everywhere! Before plants, trees, and flowers bloom, dandelions are readily available for bees to access. That said, we unconsciously put the bees in jeopardy in the pursuit of a well-trimmed, perfect lawn. For this reason, Dr. Tabari has provided us with some ways we can be mindful to help the birds and bees flourish around us. Website: https://www.bcbhoneyfarm.com/ Email: Info@bcbhoneyfarms.com Phone: 604-722-6867

We are sharing our cities, parks, and gardens with birds and bees. They were here before us, and therefore it’s our responsibility to make sure they survive. Honeybees and other bee species are declining, mainly because of habitat loss. You can make a difference just by creating a bee-friendly space in your garden.

Don’t use unnecessary pesticides and herbicides in your garden and on your farm. Don’t buy any genetically modify pest-resistant plants. Plant flowers which produce pollen and nectar for bees. Have blooms from spring through fall: Don’t limit your garden to an end-of-July colour extravaganza. You’ll need a diversity of native nectar plants to flower over a few months. Make sure you always have blooming flowers and a source of water for birds and bees in your garden.

-Dr. Iman Tabari

Please, take a moment to stop and bee mindful this spring! For more information about how you can get involved in saving bees and the amazing health benefits of cold extract raw honey, visit BCB Honey Farms at:

T

he Spring Equinox is celebrated each year in the Northern Hemisphere on March 19 or 20. “Equinox” is a Latin word meaning “equal night” and it is set on one of these dates every year regardless of the different time zones. The first day of spring this year is Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Is the Spring Equinox really the first day of spring? Astronomically speaking, the answer is “yes”. The year is divided up into 4 parts and according to the sun’s position the seasons are set. However, meteorologically speaking the first day of spring is March 1st. The meteorological seasons are based on average temperatures, not the position of the sun. Find out more about the Zodiacal Light and the first day of spring from this video made in

2017: https://youtu.be/3J0H80Cwg9Q Whenever you celebrate the spring, we are always ready to shed winter clothes and welcome more sun into our lives. Here in Canada it’s best not to shed those winter coats too soon. The temperatures can still dip down after March. Some people celebrate the start of spring with spring festivals, parades or hikes. While Mardi Gras is actually linked to Easter, a religious holiday, the revelry surrounding the Mardi Gras parades and celebrations is definitely a fun time for all. Are there local celebrations for the first day of spring where you live? Let us at “What’s On! Surrey/White Rock” know about them, OK? Email whatsonwrss@gmail.com

10 SIMPLE PROJECTS WITH A BIG IMPACT FROM STAY ORGANIZED Spring it’s not only the beginning of a new season, also the opportunity to give ourselves a fresh start, getting rid of thing that we no longer use 1. Spruce up your bedroom: If you have the space in your room, reposition your bed. Rearrange your artwork or finally hang up the pieces you bought some time ago. Get rid of furniture you don’t need. Clear surfaces like dressers and night tables. 2. Magazines and Catalogues: You can donate the magazines in good condition to a local hospital or senior residence. Recycle catalogues and magazines that are no longer relevant. 3. Purge your winter coats: The cold is finished so it’s a perfect time to discard anything that you didn’t use this winter (or previous winters). Great candidates to go out the door are missing gloves, and toques that don’t fit properly anymore. 4. The spices and condiments rack: Look for expiration dates or broken packages. Make an inventory of what you have, but most importantly of what you actually use. Put the things you use more often in a space easy to reach. 5. Go through your book collection: This can be a hard one for book lovers. Anything that wasn’t read in the last year you need to evaluate if you actually will get to read those books.

6. Under the kitchen/bathroom sink: It’s a very small space, very often cramped with a lot of stuff that sometimes just get shoved under and creates an unnecessary mess. Discard anything that is empty or leaking. Or any product that you haven’t used. 7. Kids clothing: Discard all the winter clothes that don’t fit your kids anymore, or will not fit in the next year. 8. Downsize your office supplies stash: Be realistic about the amount of things that you can keep. Only keep those that you use on a regular basis. Check with non-profit organizations, they potentially could put your unwanted office supplies to good use. 9. The linen closet: Review the size of the sheets you have vs the mattresses in your house. Any mismatching sets or stained items. It’s a good idea to take the towels that you will discard to animal shelters or vet clinics. 10. Declutter you garage: Check your tools for rusty or broken items. Toss anything old, half empty or any left-over materials from previous projects around the house. Paint cans, can be taken to Rona for proper disposal. Start this process in the place that is less conflictive to you. So for instance is you are really attached to your books and you know it’s going to be a bit of struggle, you could start in the linen closet or office, or any place were the decision process is simpler for you. Leave books for after you have a hang of the process. Remember reward yourself! That is a great motivation to start. But most importantly, finish the projects you want to accomplish.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Interview with Gurdip Singh Sahota by April Lewis Gurdip with Jagmeet Singh New Leader Of Federal NDP

“This is where my working life started…it’s a little piece of heaven.” As a new immigrant to Canada, Gurdip Singh Sahota started his first job driving for a White Rock South Surrey taxi company. In 2017, he obtained his real estate license and makes regular donations to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation as part of the Community Realtor Challenge. This is his way of giving back to the community he loves and where he has history. And what a history! As an observant Sikh, Gurdip wears a turban in accordance with his religious doctrine. In fact, it is more than a cultural symbol to him; it is a fashion statement. He owns 33 turbans in various colours. As well as dozens of brightly-coloured shoelaces. But I digress. Let me share Gurdip’s story of his involuntary 15 minutes of fame. It was one day in 1991 when, as a new cab driver, Gurdip enrolled in the SuperHost program which was taking place at the White Rock Legion. Upon arriving at the venue, he was asked to remove his turban. He refused and left the Legion after which he was, in his own words, “reluctantly thrust into the limelight.” The local newspapers had a field day and the World Sikh Organization

Hello, my name is Gurdip Sahota, your new REALTOR® Let’s sell this house and find you a new home Please call me at (604)728-3518 and let me show you how

Gurdip with Daughter & Wife at April 2017 Vaisakhi Parade

filed a complaint with the B.C. Council of Human Rights. As an ‘army brat’ who spent part of his childhood in England, Gurdip felt insulted at the time although bears no malice or hard feelings today. The prejudice he experienced was rooted in what he refers to as “colonial vestige”, as India was a British colony until 1947. The irony is that his father was a Major in the Indian Army and together they attended garden parties at Buckingham Palace where no one was asked to remove their turban. His grandfather fought alongside the British Army in World War II. But luckily, we have come a long way since then as I am sure our Federal Minister of Defense, Harjit Singh Sajjan, a retired Lt. Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces would agree. As no doubt would Jagmeet Singh, the new leader of the Federal NDP. As Gurdip, a proud Canadian emphasizes, “You’ve got to be inclusive.” and personally invites you to attend the vibrant Surrey Vaisakhi Day celebration on April 21st to experience Canada’s diversity. This day marks the New Year and the birth of the Sikh faith. With up to 300,000 people attending, Surrey is host to one of the largest Vaisakhi parades outside India. And if you see Gurdip, drop by and say hello. He will be sporting the colourful turban and matching shoelaces.

There are many houses on the market, but only ONE home Let me help you find it All I do is: List, Sell, Repeat

BARTER GENERATES MILLIONS FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY

GET STARTED WITH A FREE MEMBERSHIP & $50 BARTER DOLLARS

“With barter, I’m able to get what I need without having to use cash. It’s less expensive for me to barter because I’m basically buying at cost,” says Mathew Dhillon, owner of Jack’s Public House. When Mathew Dhillon from Jack’s Public House in Surrey decided his business needed new carpet, he didn’t call a flooring company, instead; he called his barter company, looking to do a trade.

using his services because they can check out his track record with Barter First.

Like a growing number of local businesses, Mathew is a member of Barter First, and trades for everything from furniture to advertising.

VIRTUAL CURRENCY So how does it work? Barter dollars are a virtual currency, with one barter dollar equivalent in value to one Canadian dollar. When a transaction takes place, barter dollars are transferred from the buyer’s account into the seller’s account.

DON’T SPEND CASH - BARTER “I earn barter dollars by selling food and drinks to other barter members,” Mathew says. “Then, when I need to buy something,

Barter dollars can be spent with local Barter First members, as well as affiliates across North America. Members can even access interest-free business lines of credit.

I use barter dollars instead of cash. It’s less expensive for me to use barter, because I’m basically buying at cost.” 600 MEMBERS Amber Noakes, managing partner of Barter First agrees, “Our barter community is made up of 600 members. Web design, printing, advertising and accounting services are all available on barter. You can even use barter dollars for things like going to a dentist, getting a massage or going away for the weekend.” ATTRACTING NEW CUSTOMERS Handyman Robert Shular is attracting new clients who want to do business with him because he accepts payment in barter dollars. New clients also feel confident

CHILLIWACK CROWNED RBC CUP HOST By Adam Louis

rab your jerseys, your facepaint, your signs and any noisemaker you can find.

The tournament will feature 10 preliminary round games, two-semi finals and the championship game.

Hockey fans from all over Canada will be flocking to Chilliwack in droves for a huge event – a prestigious hockey tournament is set to come to the Fraser Valley for the first time this spring.

The RBC Cup was formerly known as the Manitoba Centennial Cup, which was first held in Charlettetown, Prince Edward Island in 1971. The bank began sponsoring the cup in 1996, and the first RBC Cup was hosted in Melfort, Saskatchewan.

The RBC Cup is coming to Prospera Centre in Chilliwack – home of the Chilliwack Chiefs. The prestigious tournament runs from May 12 to 20. “We’re proud to have the Chilliwack Chiefs represent the BCHL at the 2018 RBC Cup,” said John Grisdale, BCHL commissioner, in a statement. “The hard work put in by the Chiefs’ coaches, players, front office and management sets a high standard in our league and across Canada.”

This will mark the sixth time the tournament has been hosted in BC. Vernon was the first to host the Manitoba Centennial in our province, hosting back in 1990, followed by Nanaimo in 1998, Prince George in 2007, Victoria in 2009, Vernon a second time in 2014 and finally Chilliwack in 2018.

Saskatchewan with 10 and Alberta with 8. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec have never hosted or won an RBC Cup. The Vernon Vipers hold the record for the most titles at 6. Hockey fans can purchase their tickets to the RBC Cup online at www.hockeycanada. ca/tickets. Proceeds from ticket sales remain in Chilliwack and go toward a Legacy Fund supporting youth sports and activities. Additionally, most of the RBC Cup games will be live streamed online at www.hockeycanada.ca/rbccup. The championship game, however, will be broadcast by TSN and RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partners.

British Columbia boasts the most championships out of every province with 13 cups, beating out Ontario with 11,
