International Lighthouse Weekend 20 - 21 August Cape Otway Lightstation is joining a worldwide party for International Lighthouse Weekend on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August. As beacons around the globe celebrate lighthouses and the people that worked in them, the crew at Cape Otway will bring the region’s powerful stories to life. Terrible Tragedies: Short performances about the trials and tribulations of people who once lived at the Lightstation gives families an amazing insight into how tough life was for our early pioneers. We’ve never had it so good when it comes to communication, but it’s historically been a big challenge at the Lightstation. Learn about maritime flags and how they were used to communicate between Cape Otway and passing ships, send a message to friends and family courtesy of the Morse Codian Fraternity at the Telegraph Station, and listen in as radio operators make contact with lighthouse keepers around the world. There will be fun and games that have delighted children over the centuries like tug-of-war, toss the gumboot and sack races, plus pony rides and art activities. Perhaps paint your own lighthouse? And for those who enjoy great food there are Devonshire teas for the traditionalists, the Shipwreck Harvest Dinner & Ghost Tour and the chance to taste foods prepared by Koori guides in the style of their Aboriginal ancestors and the Cape’s first people - the Gadubanud. Call into the Lightstation’s Cultural Centre to experience food prepared in handwoven baskets, damper making and try your hand at spearthrowing. And of course for a 360 degree bird’s eye view of the Southern Ocean’s stunning coastline and back inland across the Otways there is no better viewing point than the top of the lighthouse, built in 1848. On clear days this the perfect vantage point for spotting migratory whales such as Humpbacks and Right Whales.

National Wool Museum Until 30 October 2016 Built for the Bush: Green Architecture of Australia Built for the Bush reveals that in terms of energy efficiency, Australia’s 19th century settler houses were far superior to today’s modern homes. This exhibition highlights early settler ways that used earth, timber and natural materials as well as light and air for their heating and cooling properties. Water, the most essential resource for survival was carefully captured and conserved. For Australia’s early rural settlers, building simple, energy efficient homes was a necessity due to their limited access to materials, skills and resources. Now in the 21st century, traditional 19th century practices are inspiring a new generation to return to these lowenergy solutions and minimise the environmental impact of modern housing. Included in the exhibition is a selection of high-end architects and do-it-yourself builders showing the range of buildings that use sustainable principles.

Event organisers have their own dashboard which shows them real time sales reports, revenue and even collates an RSVP List/Database.“We have loads of little tools to help event organisers such as the ability to collect dietary requirements, sell full tables and/ or individual seats at a table, collect marketing intelligence and set up invitation only codes for private style events. “We are now launching Australia’s only low cost mobile gate ticketing solution using IPADS and our APP. Our Gate Ticketing service is perfect for larger events with over 1,000 people wanting to pay at the gate” said Jan Martin. Barwarre Gardens Barwarre Gardens Retirement Village continues its strong sales record with eight homes left in stage 4 and three in stage 3, it is experiencing what real estate agents might call ‘a property boom’. “The quick sale of stage 4 has hurried us along in preparing the next phase of the development which will include stages 5 and 6”, says Chris Huddart, Construction Manager for Karingal. “Phase two will also include a green link which can accommodate a walking track with exercise stations for people to work out, a bowling green and pavilion. This will be a lovely addition to the existing multi-million dollar community centre”, he said. Many years of careful planning into this well designed and considered retirement village, offers residents a variety of low maintenance and affordable, architecturally designed, retirement living homes. Each home is tailored to the individual lifestyle of today’s retiree. The attention to detail in the development is clear with stage three selling quickly and the recently released stage four following suit. “The village really sells itself, with such a great location and welcoming atmosphere. To date we’ve had 59 settlements across the development with 16% converted sales against the industry average of 5%, it’s a great achievement”, says Leeanne Morrison, Barwarre Gardens Sales Manager. Although a relatively new suburb in terms of development, Marshall already has an established infrastructure. The Marshall Train station a short stroll from the village, gives residents easy access to Geelong, Melbourne and regional locations. A bus stop offers services to major shopping hubs and many destinations within the Geelong region. The beautiful and popular beach destinations of Torquay, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads are breathtakingly close too.
To find out more about this ‘simply perfect’ development or to benefit from the freeze on service fees until 2017, please call Leeanne Morrison on 1300 472 424 or visit barwarregardens.com.au.

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932, and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry.

Geelong Gallery Discover the inspiring works of art and interactive spaces on offer at Geelong Gallery this month. People Like Us until 21 August 2016 People Like Us captures universal aspects of the contemporary human condition in film, animation, digital and interactive art. In a diverse collection of recent new media works by Australian and international practitioners, the exhibition also reveals the many experimental technologies being deployed by artists as they comment on issues confronting us in the 21st century. People Like Us is a National Exhibitions Touring Support Australia exhibition developed by UNSW Galleries, University of New South Wales and toured by Museums and Galleries of NSW. Atmospherics until 15 January 2017 Atmospherics draws together a selection of paintings and assemblages that range from photo-realist landscape through images of the body in space, to geometric abstraction. The material and pictorial qualities and subjects of each of these diverse works create quietly powerful and affective atmospherics, varying moods and meditative spaces that offer the opportunity to see works of art in thought provoking relationships, and to see the human form, landscapes, air and light in new ways. Black to blackest until 14 August 2016 Selected works from the Gallery’s collection in which artists deploy an exclusively black palette using paint, ink, mixed media and charcoal, with variously minimalist and expressionist approaches. Includes works by Peter Booth, Janenne Eaton, Stieg Persson, Aida Tomescu and Dick Watkins, among others.

Yes Said the Seal Refined maritime climate wines Progressive, elegant, limited Located onsite at the spectacular Flying Brick Cider House, Yes said the Seal comprises a suite of limited release cool maritime climate wines unavailable anywhere else in Australia. Yes said the Seal went straight into the acclaimed James Halliday Wine Companion with a five star rating in their first year of release. Crafted by leading Bellarine winemaker: Darren Burke, the mantra for this range is to create wines from local fruit that are refined and complex, yet inherently cutting edge. Spearheading the launch of the new range is a Reserve Sparkling Blanc de Blanc 2009 which Darren has been cradling for years on tirage for a special occasion – and the occasion is Yes said the Seal. Yes said the Seal’s stable of wines includes Sparkling Blanc de Blanc Reserve, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Rose. The ‘Seal’ is a proud and prominent resident of Bellarine hot spot: Flying Brick Cider Co. The elegant Yes said the Seal branding was created to reflect the acclaimed cool maritime climate backbone intrinsic to Bellarine ‘terroir’ and wine calibre.
