The new year is well and truly here and with it this month brings to us again so much to get out and enjoy within our beautiful region.
From our
EDITOR
A must do and a much loved event, is without doubt Pako Festa which this year will celebrate its 35th year. The theme for 2017 is: “Discover Food Of The World’ and the vibrancy, color and excitement of this amazing event will be shining at Pakington St, Geelong West from 9-5pm on Saturday 25 February. The Great Australian Beer Festival is here again this February at Geelong Racecourse. And for those with a preference for the brown tipple, be prepared to be overwhelmed by many a delicious choice of brews. Cider lovers can also immerse themselves and then top off their day with some amazing live music and delicious food offerings. Tickets are on sale now at www.gabf.com.au Summer is many things, but lazy days watching a good game of cricket are definitely up there with our most favorite of things to do. This summer the boys in white are heading to Kardinia Park who will play host for one day only as Sri Lanka and Australia battle it out as part of the KFC T20 International Cricket Series. Add to that a double dose of cricket fun, as Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars go head to head against New Zealand. Tickets are available at www.cricket. com.au/tickets and kids entry is free. Since September 2015, The Spirit Of Anzac has been making its centenarary mark throughout Australia telling the story of Australia’s involvement in WW1 and the following wars right up to the present day. This exhibition is on display at Geelong Arena between 21-27 February and has won awards for design and technical achievement. Entry is free, but tickets must be booked via www.spiritofanzac.gov.au. With summer still here, why not take to the bay and enjoy Searoad Ferries Sunset Sailings on 11 and 25 February. The views are incredible, the sunset is simply amazing and add delicious local and regional produce along with roving entertainment and how could you be anywhere else. Sailings are three hours in duration and tickets can be booked at www.searoad.com.au/sunset. On that note, have a great month and see you for our March issue. Trudi and the Team

St John of God Geelong Hospital Geelong’s first private emergency department is waiting to provide you with outstanding care should you need it while holidaying in the region this summer. On very hot days at this time of year, people are at risk of heat stroke, which in some cases can be life threatening as the body’s cooling system breaks down and your core temperature rises. Heat stroke can affect children when they become dehydrated after running around in the sun, or if they are left in a hot car. It also affects the elderly, whose risk can be increased if they are on certain medications or if they don’t dress appropriately for the conditions. An elderly person suffering heat stroke may be dizzy, disoriented or confused. They may complain of being thirsty, or suffering a headache or nausea. Often they may look flushed or pale. It is important to move them out of the heat into a cool or airconditioned environment. If their symptoms don’t improve, it is critical to seek medical advice. Heat stroke can be very serious for the elderly and often requires hospitalisation. Be careful out there. If you do need help, come and see the caring and professional staff at the St John of God Geelong Hospital Emergency Department. Voted Australia’s No.1 Emergency Department in the Press Ganey Satisfaction Survey for two consecutive years; 2015 and 2016. St John of God Geelong Hospital Emergency Department Open 8.00am to 10.00pm 7 days a week. P 5226 8811 80 Myers Street, Geelong www.sjog.org.au/geelong

It incorporates an extravagant street parade featuring around ninety floats and hundreds of performers representing forty-five affiliated ethnic communities and around sixty other community groups and organisations. The street is lined with stalls selling traditional foods, arts and crafts, along with six separate stages in the precinct offering performances of music and dance as well as interactive workshops and exhibitions.

Arts and Music figure high on the agenda as do events celebrating history, festival events and community events raising money for much needed causes. Add to the list a good handful of events which cover a wide range of topics and interests and Geelong is never far behind in ensuring a wide range of events is always on offer.
Pako Festa offers a unique opportunity for those 100,000-plus participants to socialise and celebrate in an arena of ethnic diversity and harmony. In addition, gaining an appreciation of the great variety of artistic and cultural expression within Geelong’s multicultural community. A very important aspect of Pako Festa is in its provision for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities to continue to affirm and honor their contributions to Pako Festa over its 35 year history. Since its inception the event continues to be a major event on the community calendar. The event theme for this year is “Discover Food of the World” and you can expect to sample over 18 local diverse cuisines, the smells and sounds will take you to another world. There is free entertainment for the entire family and of course not to mention the great Pako Festa parade starting at 11am with spectacular colours, movement and creativity from around the global. The 2017 Diversitat Pako Festa is delivered by Diversitat and is supported by The Victorian State Government, Victorian Multicultural Commission and the City of Greater Geelong. into Geelong every Friday night throughout February. It’s an intimate affair and for a little parcel it packs a big punch. Now an integral part of warm summer nights in Geelong, Nightjar in the City is beautifully situated in Johnstone Park overlooked by the stunning new state of the art Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. The Nightjar Festival brings together emerging designers, amazing musicians and taste sensations from around the world, with award winning street performers and a boutique bar. Walk through the gates and step into a magical wonderland… intrigue the mind, nourish the soul and awaken the senses. There’s so much to see and do or you can do absolutely nothing besides take it all in. Leave your worries at the gate, soak up the atmosphere, shake out your picnic rug and enjoy the company of family and friends. Immerse yourself in the Nightjar experience. There are buskers, roving performers and art installations to behold. WITH THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
Nightjar is a unique event that borrows inspiration from many of the world’s festivals, cultures and arts. The Moon Mother stage is a platform for some down-right talented musicians. There’s plenty of room on the dance floor but you’ll need to squeeze in to get access to the “mosh pit” as front of stage is claimed by the little ‘Nightjarers’. So much is happening in 2017, so don’t miss out as you’re in for a real treat. Until 26 March Things look different at night: N I G H T L I F E N I G H T L I F E is an exhibition of evening wear from the 1920s and 30s from the National Trust of Australia’s (Victoria) collection. More than 35 gowns, men’s wear and accessories will be on show at Barwon Park Mansion, Winchelsea. The fashion on display, many of which have never been seen before, reference the night sky, stars and planets, neon lights and fireworks. The National Trust’s Curator, Elizabeth Anya-Petrivna explains how the idea for the exhibition came about: “It started after a lavish French dancing dress was viewed by curatorial staff. Its masterful hand-
crafted pattern was beaded onto nude tulle like a landscape of pearlescent flowers set amongst rivulets of sequin and glass. Even in the dim light of the storeroom, the dress shone. Soon other evening dresses were selected, which became the start of the exhibition and its main theme.” This special celebration of evening wear worn by the women and men of Victoria, with many pieces made locally, is a must-see exhibition surveying the ‘in between-the-wars era of 1920s and 30s’, said Ms Anya-Petrivna. “The fashions capture the magic of the night, with embellishments and fabrics from the darkest velvet pierced with the sharp gleam of
diamante, to sequined patterned confections worn to dance the night away,” she said. Make sure to get to Barwon Park Mansion to view this exhibition and be transported to a world of 1920s and 30s glamour where stars, sophistication and city lights influenced the fashion worn by the welldressed. Night Life at Barwon Park Mansion will run Wednesday to Sunday until 26 March 2017 - 11am to 4pm. Visit nightlifecostumes.com.au for further information and to book tickets. Tickets are also available at the door. Barwon Park Mansion • 105 Inverleigh Rd, Winchelsea

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry. P 5237 9240 • lightstation.com

Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. 50 acres of vines are being planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit.
