editors note Hello and welcome to yet another month of What’s On Magazine. July is a month in our region that as our front cover clearly indicates is a celebration of all things food and what an amazing 24 days is being rolled out in honor of Tastes Of Central Geelong. A gastronomic festival of food, flavours and fun whether it be cooking classes, themed dinners, coffee crawls, food tours of even tastes for the kids to celebrate, there promises to be something for everyone. So check out centralgeelong.com.au/tastes. July is also officially opening the doors of a building many of us have watched take shape and what is going to add another key element to the incredible health system our region offers. Epworth Hospital will offer a plethora of medical experts and specialties as well as a large, well equipped Emergency Department. Services
will also include both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapies, medical imaging, diagnostics and pathology as well as many other services to ensure a state of the art, highly effective hospital offering the very best in medical services and care. The start of July marks the second week of the school holiday period and is the perfect time to get the kids out and about and on the go! There is certainly no shortage of things to do and see, so why not get your kids skates on literally and head to Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre for some serious roller skating fun, otherwise kids craft or some photo booth giggles will no doubt prove a sure fire way to beat any household holiday boredom. Market Square are also promising activities chock full of fun for the kids as well as some delicious treats the kids simply won’t resist.
Searoad Ferries are a great way to cross the bay, and are also well catering to both young and old over the school holiday period. Why not climb aboard for a day in Sorrento and beyond and enjoy plenty of onboard activities to keep the children well entertained and some seriously delicious coffee for mum and dad to enjoy. Also don’t forget the captivating view as you meander across the bay. And seniors every Wednesday during July and August is half price on return ferry foot passenger tickets, so for only $11, how can you not resist?

2015 Scarf of the Year ‘You and Me and the Dancing Sea’ by Maureen Watts Model: Alex Hecker
National Wool Museum Wildlife of Gondwana: Beasts of the Great Southern Supercontinent Until 23 July 2017
Scarf Festival© 2016: Myths and Legends Until 4 September 2016
The National Wool Museum welcomes some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet and they are all from our own backyard. Meet Cryolohophosaurus the Antarctic dinosaur, Megalania the giant lizard and his lunch: Bullockornis the giant flightless bird.
This year’s Scarf Festival© theme is ‘Myths & Legends’ featuring wearable art from across Australia and abroad. Hundreds of scarves will feature, made from every conceivable material. Each telling its creator’s personal story. From winter wear to lovingly crafted treasures and fashion statements to meticulously crafted art form.
Global environmental crisis, food shortages, birds so big they couldn’t fly and one big, mean ol’ nasty komodo dragon-like creature. Just another day for the Wildlife of Gondwana, where drifting continents affected the evolution of dinosaurs and mega fauna from 3.8 billion years ago to the present. Wildlife of Gondwana is an exhibition where skeletons and fossils meet scientists and artists. Where vivid illustrations by Peter Trusler put muscle and skin on bone to give us a glimpse of how some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet lived.
Choose a work of wearable art for yourself as most of the scarves are available for purchase through the museum shop. Also vote which scarf should receive the People’s Choice Award on visiting the exhibition. Experience yarn spinning, hand spinning, a variety of weaving techniques, felting, knitting, knot tying and more. Craft demonstrations are held most days of the festival from 10am – 3pm at no extra charge. Please refer to Scarf Festival Advertisement in the craft section.
Surrounded by life-like environmental murals, the exhibition features real fossils, skeletons and 20 fullscale skeletal casts, many of which have never been on public display in Australia before. From PrimeSCI! and the Monash University Collection.
Entry to both exhibitions is included in the museum entry fee • P 5272 4701 • nwm.vic.gov.au

Embroidery Exhibition 16 - 22 July Romancing the Stitch Exhibition Renowned local embroidery artist and tutor, Angela Dower will be showcasing a collation of unique textile art from the past twelve years at Geelong Art Society. The exhibition titled “Romancing the Stitch”, will highlight the cherished art of embroidery featuring pieces from Angela Dower and members of her class. “Beautiful fine surface stitching, embellished pictures, gorgeous blankets, cushions and much more using specialty silk threads, fine wools and silk ribbons will be on display”, says Angela. From the humble origin of simple sewing, embroidery is one of mankind’s oldest art skills with texturally lush works of art painted, not with oils or watercolour, but with threads. “Learning how to embroider is fairly simple, but true mastery can take years and untold amount of patience, not to mention pricked fingers”, says Angela. The exhibition considers that embroidery is indeed a cherished art form. Entry is a gold coin donation with all proceeds from the exhibition donated to the Smith Family.

Barwarre Gardens Cold Call Phone Scammers - Be vigilant The surge in reports of scammers calling people at home has risen in recent years. According to Scamwatch, this year alone has seen over 46,000 reports and over $27.5M in financial losses due to scams. Everyone is at risk of falling victim to a scam, especially those who are not tech savvy. One scam that never seems to disappear is the call from someone claiming there is a problem with your internet connection or computer. The caller claiming they are from Telstra, raises a false alarm that you are at risk of your internet being disconnected immediately, as your computer has been hacked or infected with a computer virus. The very helpful caller claims they can fix this problem on the spot, all they need is for you to download software that will allow the caller access to your computer. Scamwatch and Telstra warn customers to hang up the phone if you receive such a call. The scammer can be very persuasive, some reportedly threatening to sue people for putting Telstra’s infrastructure at risk. If you provide your credit card details and give remote access to your computer, the scammer may not only take more than the stated ‘fee’, but also infect your computer to gain access to your personal information and commit other acts of fraud. Scammers frequently pose as well-known and reputable businesses. So be vigilant – scammers can be very devious. If you receive a call, out of the blue, from someone claiming to represent Telstra and they ask for access to your computer, just hang up. Scamwatch is run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise, avoid and report scams. If you want more information go to scamwatch.vic.gov.au

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway - a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932, and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry.

The Mineral Springs Reserve was created to protect the liquid gold, also known locally as nature’s champagne. The Reserve is home to the historic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa and the Hepburn Pavilion Cafe, located near Daylesford just 90 minutes from Geelong and Melbourne.

Parkers Steakhouse Geelong and Drysdale Hidden away down Shorts Place, Parkers Steakhouse lacks the panoramic views of the bay, but more than makes up for it with its warm, inviting atmosphere in a beautiful, rustic, bluestone building from the 1850’s. Geelong’s original and best steakhouse opened a second store two years ago in Drysdale which has been well received both by locals and visitors to the region. Parkers Steakhouse Drysdale continues the tradition of the popular city restaurant offering the same warm, inviting atmosphere in a beautiful, rustic setting with friendly service. With more that ten cuts of meat to choose from including Certified Australian Angus Beef, everybody will find something to enjoy. Steaks are yielded from Prime Australian pasture-fed beef cut to Parkers exacting specifications, then aged 28 days to maximise tenderness and enhance flavour. If beef isn’t your thing, try some of the pork spare ribs, lamb mignons, chicken breast, grilled salmon or a vegetarian meal, all prepared in complete view from the open kitchen. Parkers Steakhouse has introduced quality controls and consistency standards that are at the forefront of the industry. They have been diligent in their research and development in order to make the Parkers experience a unique and most importantly, a memorable one. People Like Us until 21 August 2016 People Like Us captures universal aspects of the contemporary human condition in film, animation, digital and interactive art. In a diverse collection of recent new media works by Australian and international practitioners, the exhibition also reveals the many experimental technologies being deployed by artists as they comment on issues confronting us in the 21st century. People Like Us is a National Exhibitions Touring Support Australia exhibition developed by UNSW Galleries, University of New South Wales and toured by Museums and Galleries of NSW. Atmospherics until 15 January 2017 Atmospherics draws together a selection of paintings and assemblages that range from photo-realist landscape through images of the body in space, to geometric abstraction. The material and pictorial qualities and subjects of each of these diverse works create quietly powerful and affective atmospherics, varying moods and meditative spaces that offer the opportunity to see works of art in thought provoking relationships, and to see the human form, landscapes, air and light in new ways. Black to blackest until 14 August 2016 Selected works from the Gallery’s collection in which artists deploy an exclusively black palette using paint, ink, mixed media and charcoal, with variously minimalist and expressionist approaches. Includes works by Peter Booth, Janenne Eaton, Stieg Persson, Aida Tomescu and Dick Watkins, among others.

Metropolis Gallery 16 - 30 July IN RETROSPECT: Peter Dawson + Joanne Kemerer + Debbie Mourtzios Opening Night: Saturday 16 July 2016 5-7pm, all welcome. IN RETROSPECT is a group exhibition that will delight those with a love of nostalgia through the mediums of painting, drawing and printmaking. Peter, Joanne and Debbie will be at the Gallery for an informal Artist Talk at 2pm Saturday 23 July (all welcome please phone for RSVP). Preview works online. Peter Dawson’s works explore stories of people from his past whose images are fading in his memory and remain only as photographs in boxes and albums, or individuals whose stories have had resonance or meaning to him. In the process of reinterpreting them as paintings or drawings they are revived and made more real with a sense of place and time, just as speaking a thought or feeling out loud makes it somehow more concrete.
Joanne Kemerer’s evocative series of portraits is a tribute to the style and grace of screen sirens from early silent era cinema through to the 1950s. Whether it’s the strength of Audrey Hepburn, the sultry Jean Harlow or the feisty Mae West, Joanne hopes the warmth and vitality of her portraits will help others celebrate the strength and beauty of a bygone era. The linocuts and gouache paintings of Debbie Mourtzios reflect a quirky humour found in period architecture. Mourtzios’ goal is to capture the atmosphere of the sky, the play of light, its shapes and shadows. She has discovered buildings with commonplace names like Shirley, Shelley and Peter that sit like beacons in the bland contemporary urban landscape. In a busy world Debbie captures these simple pleasures of the moment observed.

The Mill course also boasts plenty of shelter making it playable even if the weather isn’t the best. Players can choose the course they would like to tackle or play both, taking advantage of the generous discounts on second rounds. In addition to golf and gardens, visitors enjoy chatting to Simon the cheeky cockatoo, getting to know the resident donkeys; Sorrel and Tully, or letting the kids loose in the playground. To complete a great day out, you can even grab a scoop of ice cream or some great locally roasted coffee in the café.
