Lots of programs run information sessions, so check the web for dates and times, as they are a great source of information and can assist in the application process. If you can’t make it, their customer service team are always ready to speak with you, so feel free to give them a call. With great industry trained teachers, hands-on learning, small class sizes and access to great facilities and support services, The Gordon is a great place to study. 2016 is also a great time to study at The Gordon TAFE, as they are able to provide exemptions for prospective students to the existing Victorian Training Guarantee upskilling requirement. This means if you already have a qualification and you have previously received Government funded training, you may still be eligible for funded training in 2016, making your studies more affordable. So maybe it’s a great time to commence a pre apprenticeship, become a hairdresser or a chef or possibly start an administrative course to build your computer skills and confidence? Perhaps a six month course in floristry or animal studies would suit? There are mid year intakes into community services, early childhood, aged care, interior design, specialist makeup or tourism. For those needing on-the-job training such as first aid, forklift operation or high risk licences there are many courses that run regularly. In addition there are also short courses that run regularly throughout the year. The Gordon second semester offerings have just been published, and are available at either: thegordon.edu.au/shortcourses, at local newsagents, or come along and enquire at Westfield.

2015 Scarf of the Year ‘You and Me and the Dancing Sea’ by Maureen Watts Model: Alex Hecker

National Wool Museum Wildlife of Gondwana: Beasts of the Great Southern Supercontinent Until 23 July 2017 The National Wool Museum welcomes some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet and they are all from our own backyard. Meet Cryolohophosaurus the Antarctic dinosaur, Megalania the giant lizard and his lunch: Bullockornis the giant flightless bird. Global environmental crisis. Food shortages. Birds so big they couldn’t fly and one big, mean ol’ nasty komodo dragon-like creature. Just another day for the Wildlife of Gondwana, where drifting continents affected the evolution of dinosaurs and mega fauna from 3.8 billion years ago to the present. Wildlife of Gondwana is an exhibition where skeletons and fossils meet scientists and artists. Where vivid illustrations by Peter Trusler put muscle and skin on bone to give us a glimpse of how some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet lived. Surrounded by life-like environmental murals, the exhibition features real fossils, skeletons and 20 full-scale skeletal casts, many of which have never been on public display in Australia before. From PrimeSCI! and the Monash University Collection. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee.

Stories of a people and place… ancient and traditional; explaining the natural, the phenomenal and the typical; widely held beliefs or ideas accounting for, explaining and defining our customs and ideals. Legends. Stories handed down… time-honoured, popular and infamous - truths asserted; the stories that capture human drama and the beliefs regarded as historical but never authenticated. Scarves. Stories told in fabric... an item that can be draped and worn around the shoulders, about the neck or near the head for warmth, cleanliness, fashion or religious reasons, serving every conceivable purpose from utilitarian to frivolity, love token to political statement. Barwarre Gardens Flu season and staying well The annual influenza vaccine is highly recommended for those over 65 years of age and at higher risk for complications from flu. A flu vaccine protects against flu viruses that research indicates will be most common in the upcoming season. Flu vaccines are often updated to keep up with changing viruses. The bodies immunity can wane over a year, so annual vaccination is needed to ensure the best possible protection against influenza. The vaccination is an important preventative measure but not the only one. In addition to vaccination, people should practice; Washing their hands regularly especially after coughing or sneezing, which is one of the best ways to avoid the spread of flu and other infectious illness. Alcohol based hand sanitizer is also effective. Cover the coughs or sneezes by using a tissue or handkerchief to cover the mouth and the nose. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow to prevent the spread of airborne germs. Stay at home if you feeling unwell. If you catch a cold or flu avoid spreading it to other people. Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. People infected with the flu may have respiratory symptoms without a fever. The flu vaccination is free for those aged over 65 years and available from GPs and other health care providers. It is important to keep an eye on elderly friends and relatives. Know who to call and if feeling unwell, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency department. If symptoms are serious, call for an ambulance immediately on triple zero (000).

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway - a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932, and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry.

Embroidery Exhibition 16 - 22 July Romancing the Stitch Exhibition Renowned local embroidery artist and tutor, Angela Dower will be showcasing a collation of unique textile art from the past twelve years at Geelong Art Society. The exhibition titled “Romancing the Stitch”, will highlight the cherished art of embroidery featuring pieces from Angela Dower and members of her class. “Beautiful fine surface stitching, embellished pictures, gorgeous blankets, cushions and much more using specialty silk threads, fine wools and silk ribbons will be on display”, says Angela. From the humble origin of simple sewing, embroidery is one of mankind’s oldest art skills with texturally lush works of art painted, not with oils or watercolour, but with threads. “Learning how to embroider is fairly simple, but true mastery can take years and untold amount of patience, not to mention pricked fingers”, says Angela. The exhibition considers that embroidery is indeed a cherished art form. Entry is a gold coin donation with all proceeds from the exhibition donated to the Smith Family.

For those of you who have one of Emma’s pieces featuring Wotarn, all the more reason to treasure them. The gallery will be bright, bold and welcoming to start winter with a burst of colour from Anna Blatman. Anna’s work is inspired by her garden. Different shades and textures of the plants and the role of light playing on them. This translates directly in the textural nature of her paintings, with layering of tone on tone and the use of many pigments to achieve the finished effect. If you are in the market for a special piece or just wandering, call into Seaview Gallery and you won’t be disappointed. Open daily 10.30am - 5pm, however closed Wednesdays in winter.

Narana Songlines celebrate with

3 - 10 July Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre is an educational and tourism focused enterprise committed to providing a welcome entree to todays’ Indigenous Culture. Narana means listening and learning, but it’s a deep, deep listening in which you take in and live out. It’s a listening and learning for life. Songlines will be the focus for 2016’s N.A.I.D.O.C. Week celebrations, providing an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait people. This exploration will highlight the importance of Songlines to the existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Through learning more about their heritage, all Australians can celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet. Narana will be holding a series of events to coincide with N.A.I.D.O.C Week to celebrate Songlines. Their recent Narana Unplugged II festival; Connecting to Country Events as well as NaranaFest (to be held in November 2016) are part of this year long celebration. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Dreamtime stories describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures. Dreaming

tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’ which record the travels of these ancestral spirits who 'sung' the land into life. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people remain connected to Country and have been able to maintain and share sacred stories and ceremonies for tens of thousands of years. Songlines have been used to navigate vast distances and map oceans, waterholes, rivers, birds, animals, plants and hunting grounds. The paths of Songlines are recorded in traditional arts, crafts, dance, songs and stories. The time is now to celebrate our shared cultural heritage and dual responsibility to recognise and respect culture and create positive models for engagement and dialogue on these important issues of National Identity. Celebrate N.A.I.D.O.C Week with Narana of which: listening and learning is but the first step in this important journey.

For more information, visit our website or facebook page www.narana.com.au

Bellarine Adventure Golf Are the kids saying they’re bored? How about heading outside and enjoying some fresh air? Australia’s most awesome mini golf is on the Bellarine and can offer that and so much more. Bellarine Adventure Golf offers a fun-filled experience for people of all ages and there is no need for any golf experience, to have a great time. There are two 18 hole courses on offer, both set amongst beautiful gardens complete with creeks and waterfalls. Both courses, the Mill and the Mountain, feature multi-level greens, balls that seem to defy the laws of gravity, tricky water hazards and sticky sand traps which ensure that everyone’s games are an adventure in which both luck and skill play a part. The Mill course also boasts plenty of shelter making it playable even if the weather isn’t the best. Players can choose the course they would like to tackle or play both, taking advantage of the generous discounts on second rounds. In addition to golf and gardens, visitors enjoy chatting to Simon the cheeky cockatoo, getting to know the resident donkeys; Sorrel and Tully, or letting the kids loose in the playground. To complete a great day out, you can even grab a scoop of ice cream or some great locally roasted coffee in the café. Open Monday, Thursday and Friday, 12noon - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am - 5.30pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
