Events Gala Day Saturday 12 November - Celebrating 100 years of Gala This is an exciting year for Gala Day as it will be celebrating 100 years of this event as well as the past, present and future of the Geelong community’s support. Don’t miss coming along to this once in a lifetime centennial celebration. As the Geelong connected communities Gala Parade celebrates its 100th year, the city will be aglow with the parade continuing in to the twilight time slot. The community is invited to celebrate this free annual event. Spectators will be entertained by colorful floats, music, sporting heroes, familiar celebrities, Santa and Mrs Claus and movie characters, such as The Minions. As of course the King and Queen of Gala. Paying homage to the history of the parade, Nurses with bedpans will follow the parade route collection donations for the hospital just like years gone by. The 100 year celebration will include a family activity zone starting at 2.30pm on Malop Street and the official launch of the Myer Christmas windows at 3.30pm. The Geelong Connected Communities parade will officially kick off at Eastern Gardens from 7.30pm after the pre-entertainment and will make its way lighting up Malop Street, Moorabool street and concluding at the iconic Christmas tree on Geelong’s waterfront. Gala raises important funds for the Barwon Health Hospital Appeal, while celebrating our community and providing the Barwon Health Foundation with a way of saying thank you to our community for their generous, ongoing support. Parade spectators will have the change to support Barwon Health by purchasing a pin wheel for only $2. All fund raised on the day will go towards #ProjectLove – the redevelopment of the Chemotherapy Day Ward and Pharmacy at Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. War At Sea: The Navy in WWI Exhibition

Wildlife of Gondwana: Beasts of the Great Southern Supercontinent

This exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy servicemen through their diaries, mementoes, ship’s logs and letters home to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships. One hundred years ago on 14 September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found to this day.

Global environmental crisis. Food shortages. Birds so big they couldn’t fly and one big, mean ol’ nasty komodo dragon-like creature. Just another day for the Wildlife of Gondwana, where drifting continents affected the evolution of dinosaurs and mega fauna from 3.8 billion years ago to the present.

The exhibition features rare objects from the National Maritime Collection, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Film & Sound Archives including medals posthumously awarded to Lieutenant Leopold Florence Scarlett - lost with submarine AE1.

Wildlife of Gondwana is an exhibition where skeletons and fossils meet scientists and artists. Where vivid illustrations by Peter Trusler put muscle and skin on bone to give us a glimpse of how some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet lived. Surrounded by life-like environmental murals, the exhibition features real fossils, skeletons and 20 full-scale skeletal casts, many of which have never been on public display in Australia before. From PrimeSCI! and the Monash University Collection. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee. For more information on these exhibitions phone 5272 4701 or visit www.nwm.vic.gov.au

Highlighting the tragedy of the war and the loss of life, the exhibition features letters of condolences following the disappearance of AE1, including a letter from Winston Churchill to a grieving widow. An Australian National Maritime Museum Travelling Exhibition. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee.

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry. P 5237 9240 • lightstation.com

The Eatery Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Seaview Gallery 29 October – 19 November - Exhibition: Colors of Land and Sea This month David Hobday and Sara Paxton will once again team up to create a stunning exhibition of beautiful marine themed glass and vibrant oil paintings that fill the gallery with light and color. Sara Paxton’s vibrant treatment of subject matter using vivid color and contemporary form, give her paintings a unique expressive style. Working mainly in oils she uses various techniques, sometimes building color and light with layers and washes to give the work a luminous, transparent effect, and in other instances, using thick slabs of color to build texture and form. Throughout David Hobday’s working life as a marine biologist, he also pursued a fascination for working with glass. His extensive use of kilnformed or fused and slumped glass conveys this intimate knowledge and inspiration from the marine environment. The wave has been an ongoing theme in his work along with boats and many underwater sea creatures such as jellyfish, weedy sea dragons and shells. Also this month new works from Christine Robinson and Jennifer Pullen. P 5258 3645 86 Hesse St Queenscliff www.seaviewgallery.com.au

Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. Over the coming months 50 acres of vines will be planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit. Fort Queenscliff Museum Fort Queenscliff dates from 1860 when an open battery was constructed on Shortland’s Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The Fort which underwent major redevelopment in the late 1870’s became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Today, it is one of the largest and best preserved forts in the country. Enjoy this rare opportunity to tour a 19th century Coastal Artillery Fort. Morning and afternoon tea facilities are available weekdays for groups (call for prices). Open weekends 1pm and 3pm. Photo ID is now required for entry.
