Narana Fest Saturday 5 November NaranaFest continues its yearlong celebration of Songlines with another wonderful family focussed Indigenous Music and Cultural event on Saturday 5 November, between 11am-8pm. NaranaFest offers an affordable, family friendly festival showcasing Indigenous Culture, Music and Art. Narana’s Boomerang stage, set in a native garden, provides festival goers an immersive festival experience, allowing people to relax on deckchairs and picnic rugs while enjoying the sights and sounds of some amazing artists,” says Narana’s Operations Manager Craig McGough. “NaranaFest’s handpicked lineup features some of Australia’s brightest rising stars and will once again traverse some eclectic, genre spanning territory. NaranaFest has got Rock, Blues and Roots, Pop, Hip Hop and everything else in between covered, showcasing some familiar and not so familiar talent,” says Festival Director Lincon Boyd. Headlining NaranaFest are two of Australia’s most critically acclaimed hip hop artists who have unveiled a powerful new project. A.B. blend of traditional language and English and embracing a more modern sound. The response to last years’ traditional Cultural dance performances sees the return of crowd favourites: One Connexion, as well as well-known group True Culture. Both groups are sure to get festival goers up and moving with their interactive and highly engaging performances. “NaranaFest allows us to engage uniquely within the community. We want to grow to be a must attend event on the local live music calendar. This event will bring more cultural dance performances, a major Art exhibition in the Gallery, Songlines on the big screen, activities for kids and we’re looking forward to an even bigger event this year. Add to that, food trucks and market stalls as well as Café Narana serving up its’ popular Festival menu, showcasing the Café’s Indigenous flavours,” continues McGough. Narana means listening and learning, but it’s a deep, deep listening in which you take in and live out. It’s a listening and learning for life. Promoting this message through events like NaranaFest is critical to advancing the Australian Reconciliation dialogue in a positive and inclusive manner. Tickets onsale: www.oztix.com.au. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM TRAVELLING EXHIBITION

17 September – 11 December: War At Sea - The Navy in WWI Exhibition at National Wool Museum

27 July 2016 – 30 October 2016 Built for the Bush - Green Architecture of Australia

This exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy servicemen through their diaries, mementoes, ship’s logs and letters home to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships.

Built for the Bush reveals that in terms of energy efficiency, Australia’s 19th century settler houses were far superior to today’s modern homes.

One hundred years ago on 14 September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found to this day. The exhibition features rare objects from the National Maritime Collection, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Film & Sound Archives including medals posthumously awarded to Lieutenant Leopold Florence Scarlett, lost with submarine AE1. Highlighting the tragedy of the war and the loss of life, the exhibition features letters of condolences following the disappearance of AE1, including a letter from Winston Churchill to a grieving widow. An Australian National Maritime Museum Travelling Exhibition. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee. For more information phone 5272 4701 or visit www.nwm.vic.gov.au

Highlighting early settler ways that used earth, timber and natural materials. Designs using light and air for heating and cooling properties. Water, the most essential resource for survival, was carefully captured and conserved. For Australia’s early rural settlers, building simple, energy efficient homes was a necessity due to their limited access to materials, skills and resources. Now in the 21st century, traditional 19th-century practices are inspiring a new generation to return to these low-energy solutions and minimise the environmental impact of modern housing. Included in the exhibition is a selection of high-end architects and do-it-yourself builders showing a range of buildings that use sustainable principles.

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry. P 5237 9240 • lightstation.com

Saturday 15 October Meet the Selwood Brothers at Children’s Book Launch

Adventure Park is set to re-open with a buzz on Saturday 29 October with several new rides and a brand new Kids Town precinct. The new precinct includes Australia’s first permanent spinning family roller coaster. The ‘Crazy Coaster’, which has been designed especially for children and families, provides all the thrills of a larger roller coaster but on a smaller scale.

Dymocks Westfield are thrilled to be launching the anticipated Children’s Book Series of the much loved and well known Selwood Brothers on Saturday 15 October, 9-11am.

Also new to the Park is the stunning ‘Red Baron’, a miniature replica biplane ride, which is perfect for youngsters and has room for 32 people on board. The Little Buggy Speedway has also undergone a revamp with bigger and better buggies themed to look like mini race cars put on the track. The Ferris Wheel and VIP cabanas which were new last season and attracted huge crowds, will remain key attractions. Adventure Park Managing Director Leanne Salmon said this season was all about providing more for families and the little kids. “The new Kids Town precinct will be such a fantastic addition as well as a new observation deck for parents and onlookers to sit on with a huge balcony and shade sails. Plus a new coffee and ice cream stand, so parents can sit back and relax and watch the kids have the time of their life on the new awesome fun rides,” Ms Salmon said. Set on 50 beautifully landscaped acres, Adventure Park boasts a diverse array of water and land-based rides and activities, including the six-lane Aqua Racer, giant Wave Swinger, tropical rafting on the Lazy River and mini golf. The park is located just over an hour from Melbourne and ten minutes from Geelong. The Park is open from 29 October, 2016 to 17 April, 2017. www.adventurepark.com.au

As told by critically acclaimed Australian Author, Tony Wilson, this series draws inspiration from the real-life childhood antics of the four Selwood Brothers, who have all played Aussie Rules at AFL level with Joel and Scott Selwood currently playing for the Geelong Cats. Between them, the Selwood’s have played over 600 AFL games for clubs in Victoria, Western Australian and Queensland. Like so many Australian kids, the Selwood brothers grew up playing footy. On having their childhood escapades transformed into exciting novels the Selwood’s say, ‘We are so excited to see our childhood come to life in this junior fiction series that will hopefully inspire more Aussie children to read books’. Author, Tony Wilson says ‘The Selwood boys are as good at storytelling as they are at finding the footy. When we spent time together, they pained a vivid picture of a fun and sport-filled childhood in Bendigo, Victoria. They shared their pranks, their games, their ambitions and their sibling rivalries. Their parents, Bryce and Maree Selwood, have been very helpful too. The boys are special obviously in terms of footballing talent, but these stories hopefully resonate with outdoorsy, fun-loving kids of all abilities. I’ve loved writing the books and loved working with the Selwood’s. They’re champions in every sense.’ Dymocks Westfield Shopping Centre Shop 1180, Malop Street, Geelong

The Gordon’s Davidson Restaurant Fri 7 October • 2.30-4pm - Afternoon Tea at The Gordon’s Café on Track

Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100% fresh fruit. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught - the on-site cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnerships are both key features. Open seven days a week 10am – 5pm for lunch and guided tastings. Dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from our trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. Over the coming months 50 acres of vines will be planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit.
