editors note Spring is finally here as is the countdown to long, warm and balmy days. It is also the beginning of venturing outdoors and embracing all our region offers locally and beyond. As our front cover illustrates, golf is the preferred sport for many and is greatly enjoyed in particular when the sun shines. Our region is home to many renowned golf clubs both for their greens and clubhouse facilities. Curlewis Golf Club as featured offers all the above, however as you enjoy your favorite game in the great outdoors, ocean vista views both welcome and beckon. How could you then not head there for at least one round, even though it most likely won’t be your last. For many of us our days are consistently busy and we are constantly playing catch up leaving little time to relax or do something just for ourselves. Saltair Spa is the perfect excuse to just take some time out, clear your mind and treat yourself to one of their many spa, beauty and wellness packages. They are located in the rolling hills of Torquay and promise you will leave feeling a whole new you and ready to do it all over again.
September is also school holiday time and when parents start to plan how to keep their little people happy and entertained throughout. Our region is never short on things to offer the whole family but these holidays are simply bursting with so many great holiday options. So get planning and get out and have a ball with the kids. Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre with its great facilities and key retail stores is high on fun for the kids over the holiday period. There will be Kid’s foody workshops, My Little Pony Activity Centre and a Junior Race Course with plush ponies’ onsite for kids 3+ and over to enjoy. For all that WPSC has to offer head to: waurnpondssc.com.au.

One thing is for sure that if you are in Geelong you are never going to be out of options to drink and dine especially if you are a Barwarre Gardens Retirement Village resident.

National Wool Museum 17 September – 11 December War at Sea: The Navy in WWI Exhibition
Until 30 October 2016 Built for the Bush: Green Architecture of Australia
This exhibition draws on the personal accounts of Navy servicemen through their diaries, mementoes, ship’s logs and letters home to tell their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting troopships. One hundred years ago on 14 September 1914, Australia’s first submarine AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found to this day.
Built for the Bush reveals that in terms of energy efficiency, Australia’s 19th century settler houses were far superior to today’s modern homes.
The exhibition features rare objects from the National Maritime Collection, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Film and Sound Archives including medals posthumously awarded to Lieutenant Leopold Florence Scarlett, lost with submarine AE1. Highlighting the tragedy of the war and the loss of life, the exhibition features letters of condolences following the disappearance of AE1, including a letter from Winston Churchill to a grieving widow. An Australian National Maritime Museum Travelling Exhibition. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee.
Highlighting early settler ways that used earth, timber and natural materials. Designs using light and air for heating and cooling properties. Water, the most essential resource for survival, was carefully captured and conserved. For Australia’s early rural settlers, building simple, energy efficient homes was a necessity due to their limited access to materials, skills and resources. Now in the 21st century, traditional 19th century practices are inspiring a new generation to return to these lowenergy solutions and minimise the environmental impact of modern housing. Included in the exhibition is a selection of high-end architects and do-it-yourself builders showing a range of buildings that use sustainable principles. A Travelling Exhibition from Sydney Living Museums. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry fee.

Narana Fest Saturday 5 November, 2016 • 11am – 8pm NaranaFest continues its yearlong celebration of Songlines with another wonderful family focussed Indigenous Music and Cultural event. “NaranaFest aims to be an affordable, family friendly festival showcasing Indigenous Culture, Music and Art. Narana’s Boomerang stage, in its’ native garden setting, provides festival goers an immersive festival experience allowing people to relax on deckchairs and picnic rugs while enjoying the sights and sounds of some amazing artists,” said Narana’s Operations Manager Craig McGough. “NaranaFest’s handpicked lineup features some of Australia’s brightest rising stars. NaranaFest has got Rock, Blues and Roots, Pop, Hip Hop and everything else in between covered, showcasing some familiar and not so familiar talent,” said Festival Director Lincon Boyd. Headlining NaranaFest are two of Australia’s most critically acclaimed hip hop artists who have unveiled a powerful new project.
Their highly anticipated, politically charged new album ‘Reclaim Australia’ due later this year, with already released tracks is receiving high praise. One Connexion, with well known group True Culture will also help in bringing Songlines to life. Both groups are sure to get festival goers up and moving with their interactive and highly engaging performances. “NaranaFest allows us to engage with the community in unique ways, we want to grow it to be a must attend event in the local live music calendar, with more cultural dance performances, a major Art exhibition in the Gallery, Songlines on the big screen, activities for kids, we’re looking forward to an even bigger event this year, plus food trucks and market stalls and Café Narana serving up its’ popular Festival menu,” continues McGough. Narana means Listening and Learning, but it’s a deep, deep listening in which you take in and live out. It’s a listening and learning for life. Promoting this message through events like NaranaFest is critical to advancing the Australian Reconciliation dialogue in a positive and inclusive manner.

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932, and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry.

the eatery Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught - the on-site cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnership are both key features. Yes Said the Seal Refined maritime climate wines Progressive, elegant, limited Located onsite at the spectacular Flying Brick Cider House, Yes said the Seal comprises a suite of limited release cool maritime climate wines unavailable anywhere else in Australia. Yes said the Seal went straight into the acclaimed James Halliday Wine Companion with a five star rating in their first year of release. Crafted by leading Bellarine winemaker: Darren Burke, the mantra for this range is to create wines from local fruit that are refined and complex, yet inherently cutting edge. Spearheading the launch of the new range is a Reserve Sparkling Blanc de Blanc 2009 which Darren has been cradling for years on tirage for a special occasion – and the occasion is Yes said the Seal. Yes said the Seal’s stable of wines includes Sparkling Blanc de Blanc Reserve, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Rose. The ‘Seal’ is a proud and prominent resident of Bellarine hot spot: Flying Brick Cider Co. The elegant Yes said the Seal branding was created to reflect the acclaimed cool maritime climate backbone intrinsic to Bellarine ‘terroir’ and wine calibre.

The Cat Cave Boarding
Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from our trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. Over the coming months 50 acres of vines will be planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit.

The Fort which underwent major redevelopment in the late 1870’s became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Today, it is one of the largest and best preserved forts in the country. Enjoy this rare opportunity to tour a 19th century Coastal Artillery Fort. Morning and afternoon tea facilities are available weekdays for groups (call for prices). Open weekends and school holidays at 1pm and 3pm. Photo ID is now required for entry.
