MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Spring has sprung and outdoor programs and activities will soon be in full bloom!

Bring the little ones to the Preschool Egg Hunt on April 1 (ages 1-3) or the Flashlight Egg Hunt on March 31 (ages 5 - 10). All members of the family are welcome to hop down the Hippity Hoppity Bunny Trail on April 8 to collect eggs that our community partners will pass out along the way. Make an impact on the world around you this season. On April 23, learn about the beautiful wildlife Wheeling has to offer as we commemorate Earth Day, or come on out to Bark at the Park on May 21 where you may just find your new best friend from Heartland Animal Shelter!

Unplug from electronic devices and plug into play, adventure, and community! Check out the Unplug at the Park schedule and plan on visiting your favorite local parks to see what we have in store for you! If you are looking to connect into a supportive group that is committed to walking each day, then join us at the spring Wheeling Walks kick off party on May 20, starting 9:30 am.

The snow is melting from the fairways and golfers will be itching to get back on the course.Get those clubs ready as we prepare all the details to announce opening day at Traditions at Chevy Chase! Be sure to also check the athletic pages to register early for the spring and summer athletic leagues at the Heritage Park Sports Complex and the Community Recreation Center. For our pickleball fans, we are excited to announce that pickleball play moves back to the Chamber Park Pickleball courts.

Summer brings us a plethora of happenings this year. Our Summer Entertainment line-up is full of live concerts by the most popular bands in the area, including Semple, 7th Heaven and the Mariachi Monumental de Mexico. Celebrate the diversity of our community at the annual International Festival and be sure to attend the annual Classic Car Show on July 22 where you will have an opportunity to see over 100 of the most unique classic and exotic cars of the region.

Don’t forget to purchase your pool membership to the Family Aquatic Center! Beat the heat and take advantage of the early bird specials! Heritage Park will also soon be bustling with summer campers! From Tiny Tots to CITS, registration is already filling up, so make sure to get your children signed up today!

Wheeling Park District has many sensational events and programs planned, and I for one cannot wait to see you all out there!

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL RECREATION

2023-2024

FOR FIELD, TARKINGTON, TWAIN AND WHITMAN STUDENTS ON ALL SCHOOL DISTRICT #21 STUDENT ATTENDANCE DAYS

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR OPENS JULY 10!

With the cooperation of District 21, the Wheeling Park District has developed a before-and after-school program for working parents that provides quality care for children in grades K-5 who attend Field, Tarkington, Twain, and Whitman schools. The program is committed to providing safe recreation activities, including games, crafts, sports, and homework/quiet time to counter the day’s educational activities. Parents may choose either before- or after-school care or both before- and after-school care.

The programs site is the Wheeling Park District Community Recreation Center (CRC). Students using before-school are dropped off at the CRC and bused to their home school. After-school care students are bussed from their home school to the CRC and should be picked up there.

Wheeling Park District offers recreation programs at the CRC, such as swim lessons, art classes, and dance programs after school. Sign up for the BASR aftercare and an after-school recreation program, and our staff will work with each family to walk their child safely to their next activity! Registration for additional activities is not included in the price of the BASR program.

PARK HOURS

All parks are open from sunrise to sunset.

LIGHTNING PREDICTION & WARNING SYSTEMS

By measuring the amount of electrical charge in the atmosphere, Thorguard Warning System predicts with a high degree of certainty the probability of a lightning strike within a covered area. This system warns guests and staff with a horn and strobe system when a lightning strike hazard is present. Areas served by Thorguard include Heritage Park, Family Aquatic Center, CRC and all adjacent areas and neighborhoods. The system is intended to warn guests and staff of probable lightning hazards in the area so lightning-related injuries and deaths can be avoided. Since Thorguard is a lightning prediction system, it is possible for the warning system to be activated even when weather conditions do not seem to indicate lightning is present. Be assured that these warnings are accurate and must be followed to ensure personal safety.

Two distinct signals sent out by Thorguard:

RED ALERT External warning horns blare for 15 seconds and strobe lights begin to blink. This signifies a lightning hazard in the area. All outdoor recreation activity should be suspended and guests and staff should seek appropriate shelter, preferably indoors. ALL CLEAR External warning horns give three consecutive blasts lasting 3-5 seconds each. This means the lightning hazard has left the area and it is safe to resume normal activities. Chevy Chase is protected under the WeatherBug lightning detection system.

LOUD MUSIC & ALCOHOL

Loud music and outside alcohol are not permitted on any Park District property.

PETS

Pets must be on a leash length of six feet or less, including extendable leashes, at all times.
