Raising the Bar

36 BELOW

There’s a new way to cocktail, and it begins in Phoenix. The new 36 Below is a fully immersive cocktail lounge, a Walipini speakeasy, an underground greenhouse bar, and the first of its kind in the nation. “We wanted to create a new, completely unique concept that allows guests to escape reality and indulge their senses,” explains Josh Kat, who co-owns it with Maurice “Moe” Murillo and Sheldon Wiley. The immersive experience includes the use of wall-to-wall video screens and audiovisual effects that transport guests to a new locale each season. Those who visit now will feel like they’ve been transported to Flagstaff, Arizona. To further enhance the experience, the 600-square-foot lounge interior will be reminiscent of a lush garden, filled with plants and flowers. And the menu? Expect inventive cocktails crafted from the elements and a selection of small bites, many of which will be plant-based. 3620 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; www.36belowaz.com

CAESARS SPORTSBOOK

Get ready to place your bet—as of Sept. 9, sports betting is available in Arizona. And, the Arizona Diamondbacks are partnering with Caesars Entertainment to launch mobile sports betting in the state. A first-class sportsbook and bar concept is being built on the plaza adjacent to the team’s home, Chase Field. Beginning Sept. 9, the Caesars Sportsbook app can be downloaded at Caesars.com/sportsbook, and bets can be made anywhere in Arizona. Through mobile betting, fans can earn credits and tier status to unlock experiences through the loyalty program Caesars Rewards. Credits can be redeemed in the form of hospitality, entertainment, food and beverage, and gaming experiences, including access to VIP experiences with the D-backs at Chase Field. Caesars Sportsbook is currently under construction and will be completed in early 2022.

Stunning Cellar Featured in the cool depths of the awardwinning Wine Cellar at Wrigley Mansion— the mansion built by William Wrigley, Jr. and the home of restaurants Geordie’s and Christopher’s—are 1,200 labels and 12,000 bottles. Oenophiles can now experience the space with the Wine Cellar Tour Experience. The tour includes a glass of Champagne and select hors d’oeuvres, plus the opportunity to hand-select a bottle of wine with the sommelier, to be enjoyed with dinner. Reservations are required and are available at www.exploretock.com/ wrigleymansion. 2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix; www.wrigleymansion.com

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN

Explore the Outdoors As fall arrives, so do the lower temps in the Valley—making it a perfect time for outdoor adventures. Grab your hiking boots and water, and head to the iconic Camelback Mountain. The Valley’s tallest mountain is so named as its shape resembles a camel (www.phoenix.gov/parks). Or, visit South Mountain’s Holbert Trail, which is regarded as the best trail for petroglyph sightings (www.phoenix.gov/parks). Tempe Town Lake plays host to kayaks, pedal boats, paddleboards, electric boats, and more, as well as fishing activities, with rentals available nearby (www.tempe.gov). Families are fans of Scottsdale’s McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, a 30-acre park which includes multiple play areas, a train that runs around the park, a carousel, a model railroad, a historic Pullman car, and expanses of grass—plenty to provide hours of fun (www.therailroadpark.com). And though it’s great for families, you don’t need children to enjoy the Phoenix Zoo, where you can enjoy the weather while viewing more than 3,000 animals (www.phoenixzoo.com).

There are more than 100 art galleries located in Scottsdale, with dozens of them located in Scottsdale’s Art District—an area defined as Main Street from Scottsdale Road to Goldwater Boulevard and north on Marshall Way, across Indian School Road to the Bronze Horse Fountain on 5th Avenue. There, stop in at Larsen Gallery (www.larsengallery.com), which features more than 500 works by more than 180 artists. A national leader in the secondary art market for more than 28 years, it is also the home of the internationally known Larsen Art Auction (held this year on Oct. 23), which will include the sale of rocker Alice Cooper’s Andy Warhol masterpiece, Little Electric Chair. American Fine Art, Inc.’s (www.warhol.me) gallery draws everyone from collectors to prominent art museums, and showcases works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, LeRoy Neiman, and Marc Chagall, while JKlein Gallery (www.jkleingallery.com) features the works of three family artists—Jim Klein, Dan Ostermiller, and Jeff Berryman. The three focus on contemporary paintings and bronze wildlife sculptures. Meanwhile, Bonner David Galleries (www.bonnerdavid.com) presents dual exhibition spaces. One displays traditional paintings and sculptures, and the other, contemporary art. To view paintings and sculptures by Native American, Western, and Southwestern artists, stop by Bischoff’s Gallery (www.bischoffsgallery.com), while Amery Bohling Fine Art (www.amerybohling.com) features the work of painter Amery Bohling, who is best known for her works of the Grand Canyon.

GRAB YOUR SNEAKERS… On Thursday evenings, head to Scottsdale’s Arts District for Scottsdale ArtWalk, the longest-running event of its kind in the nation. Held from 7-9 p.m., the free event is a perfect time to wander the participating galleries. Scottsdale Gallery Association members also often host exclusive events, and showcase featured Scottsdale and national artists. In addition to the weekly happenings, eight times a year the Gold Palette Series presents special themes that enhance the event. For more information, visit www.scottsdalegalleries.com. Meanwhile in Downtown Phoenix, Artlink’s First Fridays Art Walks are held the first Friday of every month from 6-10 p.m. and are one of the nation’s largest self-guided art walks. Similarly, Third Fridays are known as “Gallery Night,” and are held the third Friday of every month. For both, visit www.artlinkphx.org for more information.

SCOTTSDALE’S ARTS DISTRICT

The Roosevelt Row Arts District is known for its public art, live music performances, art galleries, boutiques, and small businesses. The walkable creative district runs between 7th Avenue and 16th Street on Roosevelt Street in Phoenix. When it first opened in 1999, the monOrchid (www.monorchid. com) was Phoenix’s largest gallery space. With 14,000 square feet, an open floor plan, and modular gallery walls, the space is adapted to fit each rotating exhibit. Currently on view is Space Camp, which features a combination of Phoenix-based and national artists. Also on Roosevelt Street find eye lounge (www.eyelounge. com), a contemporary, artist-run space that fosters emerging and established Arizona visual artists. Each month, the gallery features new exhibits. Just a few steps off of Roosevelt Street is FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel, which houses the FOUND:RE Contemporary gallery (www. foundrehotels.com/contemporary). The gallery showcases both emerging and established artists through monthly exhibitions and special events.

AROUND THE VALLEY Beyond Scottsdale and Phoenix, there are galleries across the Valley. Vision Gallery (www.visiongallery.org) in Chandler is the locale for evolving exhibitions across a variety of media, from drawings to

paintings and sculptures to photography. The works featured are all created by local and regional artists, and a percentage of the artwork sales helps fund free arts education workshops for local youth. In Tempe, the Fine Art Complex 1101 (ww.fineartcomplex1101. com) presents contemporary works across a variety of mediums by local, national, and international emerging and established artists. The gallery is housed in a landmark building designed by modernist architect Will Bruder. In Downtown Phoenix, Bentley Gallery (www.bentleygallery. com) has been a fixture on the art scene for more than 35 years. The gallery showcases contemporary paintings and sculptures from artists across the United States and Europe, including Daniel Brice, Enrique “Sebastian” Carbajal, and Travis Rice.

lthough the vibe in the Valley of the Sun may seem casual on its surface— shorts and flip flops, anyone?—fashion is always at its forefront. As the summer makes way for fall and a new season of styles emerge, so has a slew of new retail destinations. From fancy dresses to everyday fashions to hip sneakers and more, it’s all here. A fashionable destination, indeed.

Fashion continues to grow as an industry in Metro Phoenix, with many independent boutiques, new-to-market locales, and even flagship destinations opening in the area. Fashion-lovers take note of these newest locales. One of the premier shopping destinations in the nation, Scottsdale Fashion Square—which spreads across 1.9 million square feet—is already a must-see locale for stylish visitors. There are currently more than 200 shops and restaurants, including 40 of the world’s finest luxury and contemporary brands such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, St. John, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Co., and Versace. Recently, the first and only Dior (www.dior.com) in all of Arizona opened here—a two-story storefront, 11,000-square-foot flagship store in the new luxury wing. Psycho Bunny (www.psychobunny.com), which offers clothing for men and kids, as well as Buck Mason (www.buckmason.com),

BARBELL APPARELL

which offers clothing for men, also opened locations at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Goodlife (www.goodlifeclothing.com), offering casual clothing for men and women, is now open, as is Wardrobe Apparel (www.wdrobeapparel.com), which has a selection of designer clothing for women. Opening soon is Sole Play 909 (www.soleplay909.com), which offers sneakers and clothing. Over at Scottsdale Quarter, Mia Bella Couture (www.miabellacouture.com) recently opened its doors, offering a selection of red carpet, bridal, special occasion, and prom dresses. Also with new locations are Creations Boutique (www.creations24.com), which specializes in modern apparel with a bohemian flare, and activewear brand Fabletics (www.fabletics.com). Those-in-the-fashion-know have probably heard of Barbell Apparel (www.barbellapparel.com), the brand that launched its athletic fit jeans on Kickstarter (which became the second most-funded fashion project of all time!). Three more successful Kickstarter campaigns, one ABC Shark Tank appearance, and now the company has a location at Scottsdale Quarter, with items for both men and women. From Scottsdale Quarter, head across Scottsdale Road to Kierland Commons, another outdoor shopping destination, and stop by Tecovas (www.tecovas.com) for handmade cowboy boots for both men and women. In Phoenix, Cave + Post Trading Co. (www.caveandpost.com) opened its doors. Run by a husband-and-wife team, the boutique features a curated collection of high-end menswear lines and accessories, as well as handpicked, affordable vintage finds.

THINGS TO DO

5

Dinners With a View

T

hey say we eat with our eyes first. Each of these restaurants is not only out to prove this adage true, but to take it to the next level by offering epic views of the Valley along with every epic bite. ALISON BAILIN BATZ ORANGE SKY

Located on the 15th floor of Talking Stick Resort by design to maximize its vantage point of the city below and Arizona’s awardwinning sunsets, this culinary castle in the sky offers a bird’seye view of the Valley in all of its grandeur. Chef Martin Yepez’s style of cooking matches the impressive vistas, setting guests’ senses ablaze with an elevated fusion of Southwestern and New American cuisines as impressive as the frequent explosion of purple, orange, red, and blue that light up the sky by day and at night. 9800 E. Talking Stick Way, Scottsdale; www.talkingstickresort.com

40

DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW

Perched atop North Mountain, both by day and at night the combination of buzzing city buildings and cactuslined desert landscape is dizzyingly spectacular. As bold as the view is beautiful, Executive Chef Anthony DeMuro’s refined yet approachable menu includes traditional steakhouse fare such as Lobster Bisque and Filet Mignon, as well as seasonal entrées including Muscovy Duck Leg Confit and Butternut Squash Agnolotti. 11111 N. 7th St., Phoenix; www.tapatiocliffshilton.com

TORO LATIN RESTAURANT & RUM BAR

Set adjacent to the famed 18th hole of the TPC Scottsdale's

W HERETRAVELER ® P HOE NIX +S COTTS DA LE

Stadium Course, Toro offers both 180-degree views of the course and the nearby McDowell Mountains from its patio—as well as for those eating indoors— thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. The views are complemented by a menu of Pan-Latin dishes that showcase the best flavors and ingredients from across South America and Asia, each inspired by the culinary team’s travels through Peru, Chile, and Venezuela to Japan, China, and Thailand. 17020 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.scottsdaleprincess.com

CHRISTOPHER’S AT WRIGLEY MANSION

A visual and gastronomic experience three years in the making, Christopher’s is James Beard Award-winning Chef Christopher Gross’ ultra-ambitious, stand-alone eatery that serves as an epicurean extension of Wrigley Mansion. With the walls made almost entirely of glass, there are city, desert, and/or mountain views in nearly every direction. Adding to the ambiance is a retractable roof, opened on cooler nights to offer an enhanced perspective of the sunset

and to welcome in the aromatics of the surrounding desert. There are multiple menus from which to choose, but the most luxe option is Chef Christopher’s tasting menu, his playful eight-course take on a chef’s dinner. 2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix; www.wrigleymansion.com

ONYX BAR & LOUNGE AT FOUR SEASONS RESORT SCOTTSDALE AT TROON NORTH

There are million dollar views, and then there are the views from Onyx, which are priceless. Located at the base of Pinnacle Peak Mountain and looking southward from North Scottsdale so the entire city is within view, this indoor-outdoor bar located on the second floor of Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North has the service and sophistication one would expect from the Four Seasons brand, yet a personality all its own. Barrel-aged spirits and locally sourced cocktails are always on the menu, as well as small plates ranging from Oysters on the Half Shell and Hamachi Crudo. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale; www.fourseasons.com

USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER

USS_AZ_2C_1

Opened in February 2020, the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River honors the brave US forces who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. As a nation, we are forever indebted to those who serve and give their lives for our freedom and we are proud to honor them and share their stories in these gardens. Located just west of Salt River Fields, the Memorial Gardens includes a piece of the original boathouse from the USS Arizona that stood at Pearl Harbor for 10 years prior to building the memorial that stands at Pearl Harbor today. Learn more about the USS Arizona, December 7, 1941 and the impact it had on so many. The Gardens are open to the public daily, from dawn until dusk.

Proudly located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
