Just Jazz THROUGH TO JUNE 4 Spending time in Paris and enjoying a jazz concert is one of the things many people dream of and this month through to the 4th, the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Jazz Festival is making musical dreams come true. Merging into Margiela By Patricia Valicenti

The Palais Galliera show, which retraces his career from the springsummer 1989 collection through to the spring-summer 2009 collection is the first retrospective devoted to Margiela in Paris. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Anvers in the fashion department, he would become the only Belgian designer of his generation to establish himself in Paris. Recycled materials, unique lines, oversized clothing, solid colours, particularly white, which he used in a myriad of nuances, are among the hallmarks of the clothing designed by Martin Margiela, regarded as one of the most influential designers of his generation yet ever enigmatic through his absence from the runway, from interviews and from the camera. Even his name is absent from the label inside of his clothes, just a plain blank white label. He brought out some 40 collections for his house, the Maison Martin Margiela, in the three decades covered in the show and during which he was active. he Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela is being honoured in the French capital with two comprehensive exhibitions exploring the various facets of this creator who has remained, throughout his career, out of the public eye. The Palais Galliera, the city’s museum devoted to fashion, is presenting a retrospective entitled Margiela/Galliera 1989/2009, while the Decorative Arts Museum, now known as MAD, is hosting a show entitled the Hermès Years showcasing Margiela’s tenure as the luxury house’s artistic director for women’s ready-to-wear.

comes face to face with the garments and accessories, the long, flowing flattering skirts, the pea coats, the Japanese-inspired ankle boots with the separated toes, the oversize collection (size 78-Italian), the 18th century jabots, all offering up the patchwork of unique and original approaches to fashion that render Margiela’s style unique and everlasting. Visitors to the show will enjoy his apron skirts made from old silk scarves unearthed at flea markets and which are bursting with prints in a departure from the designer’s propensity for solid colours. These skirts, too, are a prime example of the designer’s use of recycled materials just like the quilt transformed into his iconic immense coat exuding ultimate comfort and wellbeing, which was brought out in 1999 on the eve of a new millennium. The show also underscores another of his creative departures embodied by his tapered shoulders, a reaction to the big padded shoulders so prevalent, even predominant in the 1980s, which ironically would be followed years later by his completely destructured jackets with voluminously wide yet unstructured shoulders. Another Margiela touch was all about turning linings into garments in and of themselves, pieces of sheer comfort. The show is played out in a chronological fashion and brings together some 130 designs, videos of the fashion shows, documents and special installations. The show also demonstrates how Margiela would innovate in the conception of fashion through his unusual venues for his shows, like a Salvation Army depot or an abandoned lot outside of Paris in which the local children joined in the show. Meanwhile, at the MAD, the museum devoted to the decorative arts, another Martin Margiela show, entitled the Hermès Years, is being played

out focusing on the period from 1997 to 2003 during which Margiela collaborated with the French luxury house as the artistic director for the women’s ready-to-wear collections. Working in strict collaboration with the house’s studios and workshops, he created 12 consecutive collections filled with comfortable, classy pieces espousing the luxury of simple style. The designs for Hermès are juxtaposed with those he designed for his own house, the Maison Martin Margiela during the same time period. Among the 120 silhouettes, outfitted with accessories, on display are stunning signature long lengths bestowing upon the wearer willowy elegance, the oversized shirts, the trim pants, a belted tunic all speaking the “it’s never out of style” language. The show marks the first time that the ready-to-wear collections designed by Margiela for Hermès compared to his designs for his own house have been shown to the Parisian public. The juxtaposition demonstrates the designer’s ability to create two distinct styles over the same period of time. The show was first put on by MoMu, the fashion museum of Antwerp. The two shows with their comfortable clothes leave you winding up wanting to meet the man, the very anonymous man, who combined elegance and comfort so aristocratically while leaving out any notion of pretence. t has been ten years since France held a Formula One race and now the 24th of June marks the return date of the Grand Prix de France in Castellet, with the South of France welcoming the sporting event at the Circuit Paul Ricard. With the world focusing on the world’s best racing car drivers we have turned our attention at the region with the best hotels, spas and restaurants to discover in between watching the world’s best zooming around. With all eyes on Castellet, the Hotel & Spa du Castellet will be without a doubt on many visitors’ list of places to discover. Besides its proximity to the Circuit Paul Ricard, the five-star establishment is a wonderful discovery for visitors looking to unwind and indulge in award-winning cuisine. Winner of the 2017 Prix Villégiature award for Best Hotel Restaurant in Europe, the hotel restaurant is a three Michelin star table that showcases the culinary talents of chef Christophe Bacquié. While the menu changes regularly with the chef using only the freshest seasonal produce, one of his signature dishes that is always the star of the menu is the Aioli Moderne, a fresh bouquet of vegetables served with a creamy aioli sauce, bringing the tastes of Provence to your table. Another highlight at this fine table is the cheese course, while most restaurants bring the cheese trolley to you, here at the Christophe Bacquié Restaurant, diners are invited into the cheese cellar where a plethora of different French cheeses are fantastically displayed. The Hotel & Spa du Castellet also boasts a 6-hole golf course for avid golfers looking to work off any extra wine and cheese they may have indulged in. Recognised by the French Golf Federation, the course is located in the heart of the hotel’s gorgeous park. And for visitors looking to prolong the bliss of being away and in the countryside, the hotel also has a spa onsite where massages and facials can be enjoyed. The converted Minim convent is a dream getaway set in Provence. Just an

hour from Aix-en-Provence, set on a sprawling garden, which seductively invites visitors to spend the afternoon walking through it, the convent is now Le Couvent des Minimes, a luxury hotel that is a country haven to breathe in the fresh air. However, enjoying leisurely strolls isn’t the only attractive call from this five-star hotel. The hotel has fast become a spa destination, thanks to its L’Occitane spa that offers treatments using the famous French house’s products, which are produced less than an hour away from the hotel. Inviting the scents of the French countryside, citrus fruits and lavender, the Massage Fabuleux, the fabulous massage, which could not have been given a better-suited name, uses Shea butter to relax you from head to toe. Focusing on relaxing you, the 90-minute treatment begins with a body massage before slowly working towards your head for a face and scalp massage. Another drawing card to discover Le Couvent des Minimes is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Le Cloître. The restaurant, which boasts two dining rooms, offers diners a choice between three set menus that change frequently with the seasons and the produce on offer. While there is no vegetarian set menu, the savvy chef, Jérôme Roy, is happy to adapt to any dietary restrictions, serving up an impressive vegetable based menu, using fresh produce and different cooking methods to add creativity to his dishes. The French commune of Les Baux de Provence is arguably one of the most beautiful villages in the country and with reportedly only 22 people residing here the village lends itself to being one of the most sought-after destinations for people who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger towns. In the heart of the town is where the Château des Baux is located, built in the 10th century it is perched high, overlooking the village. It is here at the chateau that you can discover the reconstruction of the trebuchet that was used to attack fortified sites during sieges. Measuring 16 metres in height the trebuchet was designed and reconstructed based on medieval drawings and visitors to the site can attend catapult demonstrations that are held here daily. w w w. p a r i s m a p. fr 15

Weekend Getaway

Just five minutes from the chateau is another incredible site that is worthy of a visit. Unlike any other cultural space, the Carrières de Lumières, once a stone quarry, organises temporary exhibitions that showcase the works of renowned artists including Chagall, Monet and Renoir. Using 100 video projectors projecting images onto the entire surface of the former stone quarry including the ground, covering the space with wonderful images, the space becomes an interactive show, visually and musically, as visitors are invited to walk around discovering the works while the images are projected on them as well, in turn becoming part of the show themselves. This year, showing through to the 6th of January 2019, the space is celebrating Picasso and the Spanish Masters with the Picasso & Les Maîtres Espagnols show. Just five minutes from the Carrières de Lumières is where you will also find another historical establishment, Baumanière, the very first Relais & Château hotel. Set on a majestic 20 hectares, the family owned and run hotel is steeped in history with world leaders and royalty including Queen Elizabeth all having visited and stayed at the 5-star hotel. Owned by Jean-André Charial and his wife Geneviève, the hotel plunges its visitors into the charm of Provence most notably with its Michelin-starred restaurant L’Oustau de Baumanière that serves the tastes of the French countryside. Chef Glenn Viel works alongside Jean-André Charial to create and indulge diners with a menu that highlights the produce of the region while still surprising diners with their culinary creativity. Dishes such as blue lobster cooked in creamy butter and served with beetroot and a tangy citrus fruit vinaigrette, and the signature dish of milk-fed leg of lamb are further appreciated while paired with wines from the restaurant’s wine cellar, the second largest cellar in France and which boasts an exceptional selection of rare and priceless wines as well as Jean-André Charial’s own Affectif red and rosé wines. Another tiny village in the region worth discovering is Paradou, with 16 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2018

the quaint village nestled between Baux de Provence and Maussane les Alpilles, and it is where you will find Hameau des Baux. Not only bursting with charm but if you are looking for accommodation that offers a unique kind of service this hotel is by far the standout address of the region. Boasting hamlet-designed rooms, the hotel serves up serenity and French charm at every corner. Furnished with vintage pieces, the address is a hotel gallery hybrid where guests are welcomed to enjoy and feel comfortable in their surroundings but are also welcome to purchase the furniture and artwork displayed. This concept, which attracts lovers of vintage furniture and modern art, in turn means that the décor of the hotel is forever changing. The hotel also has a collection of vintage cars, all convertibles, that is made available to guests to drive around in, discovering the postcard region with the wind in their hair. Made up of three mountain ranges, the Lesser Luberon, the Greater Luberon and the Eastern Luberon, the Luberon region is dotted with picturesque villages found in the valleys around these ranges. One of the most famous villages in the valleys is Lourmarin, which is surrounded by lush vineyards and olive groves, and it is where Albert Camus once lived and worked. Full of charm with winding streets taking you through its heart, passing quaint squares and boutiques offering regional delights, the village is the epitome of the French countryside, which has been captured and idolised by many around the world, most notably by British writer Peter Mayle who wrote A Year in Provence, which was later made into a film, entitled A Good Year. While the village is the real gem here, you will not want to miss seeing the Renaissance castle and if you are in the area on a Friday make sure you make time to discover the Lourmarin market where the open-air market shows off local talents and edible specialties. made soaps are only some of the souvenirs that you can find. Of course visiting the Luberon region is incomplete without sampling some of the fine French wines produced here. Just 10 minutes from Lourmarin is the village of Lauris, sitting on a cliff with a panoramic view of the Durance valley, and it is where you will find Domaine de Fontenille, a hotel built on 35 hectares with sweeping vineyards. Made onsite, the hotel’s wines, including the rosé with delicate notes of raspberry, are all served at the establishment’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Champ des Lunes, where chef Jérôme Faure is at the helm. The menu changes frequently but is always modern and features fresh and seasonal produce, with the dishes beautifully complemented to one of the house’s wines, which also includes a certified organic rosé. While in the region one of the most extraordinary natural wonders to discover is the Ochre of Roussillon. Often referred to as the grand canyon of the South of France, the Ochre of Roussillon sees hiking trails that guide tourists up the fiery red valley, with magnificent panoramic views on display. Meanwhile, for thrillseeking visitors a visit of the Verdon Gorge is not to be missed. Europe’s largest canyon, Verdon Gorge is striking in colour with its turquoise waters attracting kayakers and rock climbers who scale its limestone walls. And for visitors who would prefer to smell the roses, or rather the lavender, Provence is renowned around the world for its lavender fields, most notably those located in the village of Valensole. The small village is home to the Musée de la Lavande, a museum dedicated to the popular flowering plant, and is also the host of the annual Lavender Festival, which will be held on the 15th of July this year.

Yurman Moves into Printemps The Printemps department store went through a fabulous makeover last year and it continues surprising us with more excusive brands that it is bringing in in its folds. Moving the department store’s men’s space to Boulevard Haussmann from its previous abode on Rue de Provence spelt a larger space and an even larger choice for gentlemen who love to dress and who, more importantly, love to shop. An inviting space where some of the biggest names in fashion reside side-by-side, bringing no less than 250 high-end luxury brands to one of the city’s largest department stores, Printemps is without a doubt an attractive address for chic gentlemen. Lanvin, Burberry and Saint Laurent are only some of the luxury houses to be discovered here with the department store constantly adding to its luxury offerings. Most recently American jewellery house David Yurman inaugurated its shop-in-shop, showcasing its collection of jewellery designed with gentlemen in mind. The collection, designed by David Yurman’s son Evan, draws from the iconic pieces of the house including the cable bracelet, however, offering a more masculine and sombre collection. Splitting Seconds F.P. Journe has broadened its lineSport collection with the new Chronographe Monopoussoir Rattrapante, a highly precise watch outfitted with a chronograph and a split-seconds function. The timepiece is available in three different precious metals, platinum, red gold and titanium, with the 44mm case housing the new splitseconds chronograph movement and a very large date display. This new calibre 1518 watch is wound manually and is made, as usual, entirely in the F.P. Journe manufacture and has a power reserve of 80 hours. The rattrapante or split-seconds chronograph is a type of chronograph that allows for the timing of two intervals instead of only one and so the watch has two second hands. A splits-second is regarded as a grand complication largely because in order for the function to work everything must be adjusted with extreme precision requiring a great deal of skill from the watchmaker. - P.V. Into the Underworld The Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac is presenting an exhibition, which offers a journey into the importance of ghosts and the afterlife in Asian art and culture with a focus on China, Thailand and Japan. Entitled Ghosts and Hells: The Underworld in Asian Art, the show takes a look at ghost stories from these regions journeying into the world of spirits, ghosts and fantastic creatures like the vengeful catwomen, hopping vampires and the yokais, the supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore. The show explores their representation in objects, art work, the performing arts, cinema and comic books from the 16th century to the present and brings together cinema, religious art, theatre, contemporary creation, mangas and video games. The exhibition illustrates the idea that the ghost never dies and that its sudden appearances are unpredictable. Contemporary creation is showcased with notably film extracts, an installation re-producing the underworlds of Thai temples and a host of surprising special effects. - P.V.

Fabulous Photographs The celebrated photographs of the renowned portrait photographer Douglas Kirkland are the object of a retrospective exhibition at the Galerie GADCOLLECTION revealing the immense talent of the artist who would take some of the most widely known pictures of emblematic icons of the worlds of fashion and cinema. There is the famous An Evening with Marilyn shoot, Brigitte Bardot playing with cards in Mexico, Jack Nicholson in the early days and the celebrated and powerful Shedding Tear picture of Judy Garland whom he took to the road with for a month. He would follow Coco Chanel for three weeks in the summer of 1962, during her entire day, and emerging, for example, with pictures of the designer placing a pin into one of her iconic jackets or surveying the fitting room from a corner, smoking a cigarette. - P.V. The Musée Marmottan Monet is hosting an exhibition devoted to a little-known aspect of the work of the 19th century artist Camille Corot, his paintings of the figure, offering a new insight into this painter known for his landscapes. The show entitled Corot, the Painter and his Models, brings together some 60 paintings of depictions of his close relations as well as of famous artist’s models of the time like Emma Dobigny. The show aims to demonstrate the diversity and versatility of Corot’s production in this domain as well as the major role these portraits of models played in the emergence of modern painting. Into the Empires An intriguing and educational exhibition taking a look at the arts and crafts produced during and for the reigns of France’s two emperors, Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III, is being played out at the Atelier Grognard in the bucolic town of Rueil-Malmaison on the outskirts of Paris. The show entitled L’Art au service du pouvoir (Art in the Service of Power) brings together some 200 exceptional objects including paintings, drawings, sculptures, furnishings, tapestries and precious objects fashioned by the leading artists and craftsmen and manufactures of the 19th century. The Napoleon Foundation is exceptionally presenting a large part of its collection at the show notably art and objects that were commissioned by the Maison de l’Empereur (the House of the Emperor), a group of officers, servants and personnel who served the emperor and organised life at court. Portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine in their coronation regalia, magnificent porcelain tableware from the Sèvres Manufacture and imperial sabres are among the works on exhibit. - P.V.

In Serendipity with the Symbolists There is a golden princess with a unicorn by Armand Point, and a sublime landscape expressing the mystery of the night by Alphonse Osbert with its deep dreamy blues set aglow by the light of the moon. The Ferme Ornée and the Orangerie of the Caillebotte property are hosting an exhibition devoted to the Symbolists entitled The Door to Dreams, a Symbolist Eye. The show brings together some 163 Symbolist works in myriad mediums ranging from paintings to sculptures, pastels, drawings, lithographs and enamels with the works on display emanating for the most part from a private French collection. The highly aesthetic and complete collection is composed of the works of some 50 artists, both French and from abroad, who lived and worked in France between 1890 and 1914. The bucolic property is surrounded by an 11-hectare garden, which for the time of the exhibition has been planted in flowers of white, the colour that was so very dear to the Symbolist movement. - P.V. Southern Comfort The brilliant young chef Julia Sedefdjian, who first won a Michelin star when she was only 21, has opened her first restaurant, and it’s not only a real charmer but also one of the best new tables in Paris in 2018. Sedefdjian is a native of Nice, and at her new place, Baieta, on the Left Bank she serves up a deliciously personal contemporary take on the Niçoise comfort-food dishes she grew up eating as a child. Dishes like sea bream tartare seasoned with lime, coconut milk and lemon grass show off her culinary wit and agility, as does her superb aioli, that southern signature dish of cod with boiled vegetables and lashings of garlic mayonnaise and a tenderly deconstructed bouillabaisse, where the fish are individually poached to retain their texture and taste rather than being muddled into the single rich flavour found in the traditional preparation of this Provençal classic. Sedefdjian loves vegetables, too, including artichokes, tomatoes and aubergines. Other excellent dishes include poached beef tongue with capers and an anchoïade sauce and smoked guinea hen breast, which is served with garnishes of stuffed cabbage, a canapé of the bird’s gizzards and a vinegar-spiked sauce of cooking juices. Sedefdjian began her impressive career as a pastry chef, which explains the excellence of the desserts here, including a sablé with fennel and lemon-pastis sorbet and a clever modern riff on a classic lemon tart. The wine list offers a fine selection of affordable bottles, and the service is as impeccable as it is friendly. New to the 8th It’s been a long-time coming, but the 8th arrondissement, which is bisected by the Champs-Elysées and filled with shops, offices and hotels, is emerging as one of the more interesting restaurant neighbourhoods in Paris. The latest contender is 24 Le Restaurant, a sleek new table where chef Erwan Merdrignac is serving up some delectable and intriguing imaginative contemporary French cooking with a deliciously cosmopolitan point of view. Dining here recently with a food-loving friend who was visiting Paris from Los Angeles, we started off with two wonderfully sophisticated dishes, a poached egg with beechwood smoked haddock, broccoli, a potato waffle and caviar and a fascinating preparation of escargots with garlic cream, watercress butter, pork belly and Comté cheese. The intricacy and elegance of Merdrignac’s cooking continued with our main courses that included a veal filet mignon cooked with Vadouvan (a spice mix) and served with a mousseline of baby peas, onion compote with almonds and a jus de veau with Piquillo peppers and roasted pigeon with Jerusalem artichoke purée and a superb chutney of onions and cranberries. A Taste of Greece Mavrommatis’s new restaurant located at the famous deli’s 16th arrondissement’s address is a treat for Mediterranean cuisine-loving taste buds. The Greek deli now serves traditional Greek cuisine in a modern setting in an intimate dining room that accommodates 40 at a time. On the menu is everything we love about Greek food, fresh, generous and full of flavour. For starters there is of course the Greek salad as well as grilled octopus and mezze platters for sharing, and for mains there is the hearty moussaka made with lamb and veal, though if you are looking for something lighter the restaurant serves the famous chicken skewers served with creamy Greek yoghurt. He made his name at the Plaza Athénée and now you can devour Christophe Michalak’s sweet desserts at his hipster coffee shop where you can enjoy coffee or the smooth hot chocolate with one of the chef’s pastries. Made Over by French Fare

Ever since I first discovered Le Vaudeville, a beautiful art-deco style restaurant across the street from the former Paris stock exchange building on a rainy Sunday night some thirty years ago, I’ve loved this place. Now this gem has been given a subtle and needed makeover that has not only refreshed its charm but also enhanced it by creating a new bar area and vastly expanding the sidewalk terrace just in time for summer dining. Better still, the menu has been updated and a change of ownership has led to a noticeable improvement in the kitchen, too. Stopping by for dinner on a recent Sunday, we started off with an excellent sea bream tartare and tiny cheese-filled ravioli from the Dauphine region, and then tucked into a filet mignon of beef with Béarnaise sauce and a small welcome avalanche of crispy frites and a house specialty, the cod with mushrooms and summer truffles. We concluded this very good meal with crêpes Suzette and an impeccable vanilla millefeuille from Angelina, the famous patisserie on the Rue de Rivoli. The 29th and the 30th of June will see Electroland come to Disneyland with the electro dance music festival taking over Mickey and Minnie’s home. Paris Metro Paris is crossed by 14 Métro lines and five RER (express suburban) lines, all numbered and named for their final destination (terminus). Did you know that there are 300 stations that make up Paris’ metro system?

Each Métro trip requires one ticket regardless of how many transfers you make, though you must buy an extra ticket for the RER outside the city limits. Keep your ticket until you exit.

Tickets are sold in all stations and in cafés (tabacs) with a ticket sign outside, single (1.90€/2€ if purchased on a bus) or by 10 (un carnet - 14.50€). This map includes the new tramway line.

“Paris Visite” passes offer unlimited travel on the Métro and buses (1day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day). The Métro and RER start running at 5:30am, and stop around 1 am.

Paris is known around the world as the City of Light. What would you recommend visitors do in the evenings to really take in its beauty? There are diverse ways to enjoy the beauty of Paris by night depending on the season you visit the Capital. When the outside temperature is pleasant, the very best way is to take a cruise on the River Seine. Many of the monuments were built along the river and so from a boat you get the best views of their lighted facades. As a culinary capital what are three of your favourite restaurants that you would recommend our readers to try? L’Arpège, because chef Alain Passard’s cuisine is always in tune with the time. Racine des Prés, I like the type of modern French cuisine offered by the young chef, and the fact that you can sit at the counter and watch the ballet in the kitchen. Chez Huguette located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés where you can feel the energy of the city while enjoying their terrace and a large seafood platter with a glass of wine. What are the top three monuments not to be missed while in Paris? I would suggest Sainte-Chapelle and its fantastic stained glass, the Hôtel National des Invalides with the Army Museum that are deeply linked to the French history and 82 W HE RE PA R I S I J U N E 2018

probably the most well-known periods under Louis XIV and then Napoleon’s reigns, and Opéra Garnier because its façade is absolutely magnificent and its inside décor breath-taking. If our readers wanted to spend their day shopping, would you recommend they do so on the Right Bank or the Left Bank? The Left Bank is for sure where you need to come if you are looking for an authentically Parisian shopping experience away from the crowded avenues and stores of the Right Bank. The Saint-Germain area is full of designer boutiques that you do not find anywhere else. You will also find the oldest department store, Le Bon Marché, and the largest choice for contemporary interior design stores and the greatest concentration of antique galleries in Paris. What would be the most romantic date in the capital of romance? Definitely June 21st as it is the longest day of the year! More than 15 hours of sunlight to enjoy the beauty of Paris, walking along the River Seine, picnicking in the Luxembourg Garden and watching the sunset from the top of the Eiffel Tower. What would you recommend for families to discover while visiting the French capital? La Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes and the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution. Children will

love to discover the second oldest zoo in the world. Near the Zoo, in a magnificent 19th century building, are more than 7000 species of animals that represent the world’s evolution through recreational activities. [I would also recommend] the Palais de la Découverte, the science museum that was created by a French Nobel Prize-winning physician and contains permanent and temporary exhibits. What are you favourite cocktail bars in the city? Prescription Cocktail Club and Le Bar Joséphine at the Lutetia Hotel, which has been totally renovated, with the décor a clever association of modernity preserving its history, and the cocktail selection must be tried.

My Perfect Day 9am: Organic food market on Boulevard Raspail to get fresh products and a bottle of good wine then stop in the Shakespeare & Co bookshop to buy a nice book. 12pm: Picnic in the Luxembourg Garden. 3pm: Visit the Rodin Museum and enjoy the quietness of its garden. 9pm: Dinner at Joséphine Chez Dumonet followed by a drink and a live jazz concert at Le Caveau de la Huchette.
