If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Protect

your online identity with these cyber-tiPs

Smartphones & mobile devices

North Central Region

• Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market.

Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you should report the crime to the FBI IC3 and to the Federal Trade Commission. They are available online at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft. You can also call them at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261 You can mail in a complaint to: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580 Source: By the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Command, http://www.nationalguard.mil/newarchives/2013/09/091913-Protect.aspx 16

PRESENTS North Central Region

The Muhammad Ali Center is proud to welcome its newest temporary exhibit, Motown in Black and White, which will run through November 10, 2013. Via original photos and memorabilia, this engaging exhibit explores the impact that Motown music had on shaping American culture in the mid-to-late 20th century. Visitors will be transported back in time through music made famous by Motown while learning how this musical revolution lives on today. Motown in Black and White is composed of historical items from the personal collection of Al Abrams, the founding publicist of Motown and its public relations director during the label’s glory days. From photos collected over the years to apparel worn by famous Motown artists, Abrams’ archive of historical Motown items is very impressive. The exhibit not only presents a great opportunity for adults to reminisce about days gone by; Motown in Black and White also caters to school children as it features curriculum that aligns with Kentucky and Indiana Core Content Standards. This allows for integration of the classroom with real-life cultural experiences. The Muhammad Ali Center is located at 144 N. Sixth Street in downtown Louisville. Parking is available in attached garage or on-street. For more information about the Muhammad Ali Center and Motown in Black and White, visit alicenter.org or call 502.584.9254. Group tours are available and special rates apply for groups of 20 or more. 24

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.
