Take back-to-school systems or

A

utumn is the time of year for settling back into school schedules and routines, and a good opportunity to think about places to take children to appreciate Kentucky history and culture. Museums, historic sites and attractions such as Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, in Harrodsburg, and Camp Nelson Civil War Historic Park, near Nicholasville, offer young people many possible insights into Kentucky’s fascinating history and diverse culture without the need for gaming systems or smartphones. At Kentucky museums, youngsters encounter collections dedicated to everything from quilts to baseball bats and the world’s most famous boxer. Whatever your kids’ interest, find a Kentucky museum that caters to it. Enjoying the priceless artifacts contained in Kentucky museums requires only that youngsters bring their sense of curiosity and desire to learn something new. From the National Quilt Museum in Paducah (www. quiltmuseum.org) to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory (www.sluggermuseum.com), Kentucky boasts one-of-a-kind collections found nowhere else in the world. The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville features the boxing champion’s extensive memorabilia, along with exhibits aimed to inspire young visitors to achieve their own fullest potential. (www.alicenter.org) Kentucky is also replete with state and national historic sites commemorating important places and people from pioneer days through the Civil War and up to more recent times. Prominent historic sites in the Bluegrass State’s timeline include: birthplaces of Abraham Lincoln (Hodgenville, www. nps.gov/abli) and Jefferson Davis (Fairview, www.parks. ky.gov/parks/historicsites/jefferson-davis/default.aspx); Cumberland Gap National Historic Park (Middlesboro, www. nps.gov/cuga); Constitution Square Historic Site (Danville, www.betterindanville.com); and the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail (at several western Kentucky locations, www. nps.gov/trte/planyourvisit/places-to-go-in-kentucky.htm).

trips without gaming smartphones Meanwhile, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill’s 3,000 acres offer a place of exploration that stretches kids’ imaginations. The pioneering Shakers who built the village more than 200 years ago evolved distinctive technology, architecture, clothing, land use and beliefs. Today, the nonprofit National Historic Landmark’s educational programs provide interdisciplinary, experiential learning for many age groups. Year-round student programs are customized to meet specific group needs and include fall-on-the-farm activities, Shaker innovation and technology tours, make-and-take workshops, grassland hikes, riverboat rides, and special seasonal activities. www.shakervillageky.org Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park, encompassing 525 acres 20 miles south of Lexington, marks the site where more than 10,000 formerly enslaved African-American men trained as soldiers for the Union Army and thereby obtained freedom for themselves and thousands of family members. The park provides insights into African-Americans’ contributions to the Union cause, as well as Kentucky’s pivotal role as a border state in the conflict. Recently designated a National Historic Landmark, Camp Nelson near Nicholasville in Jessamine County was established 150 years ago on a directive from President Abraham Lincoln and played a critical function in the Union war effort as a supply depot, recruitment center and hospital facility. Camp Nelson is most significant as the nation’s largest recruitment and training center for AfricanAmerican troops open today for visitation and interpretation. www.campnelson.org For more ideas of historic and cultural attractions to visit with your children this fall, go to www.kentuckytourism.com.

places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

your online identity with these cyber-tiPs

Protect

Smartphones & mobile devices • Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market. Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you should report the crime to the FBI IC3 and to the Federal Trade Commission. They are available online at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft. You can also call them at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261 You can mail in a complaint to: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580 Source: By the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Command, http://www.nationalguard.mil/newarchives/2013/09/091913-Protect.aspx

Harrodsburg Some people say Harrodsburg is where Kentucky began. It was the first permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies and was established in 1774. Many of the homes and buildings around town reflect Harrodsburg’s more than 200 years of history and culture. Old Fort Harrod showcases the early frontier life with live craftspeople.

LaGrange With its historic architecture filling the downtown area, LaGrange offers guests the relaxed pace of a Kentucky small-town.

There hasn’t been an earthquake in Lebanon, Kentucky for decades but things never stop moving in Marion County’s largest city. With its lively downtown chock full of eclectic dining and entertainment to its special events and festivals, the Lebanon National Cemetery, historic homes and landmarks, rich Civil War and religious heritage and a robust genealogy research facility, Lebanon keeps a steady beat.

Lexington Originally called Masterson’s Station, the name changed to Lexington in 1775 when traveling hunters heard of the Revolutionary War battle in Lexington, Massachusetts. The city is home to Transylvania University, the first college west of the Alleghenies. Many of the Commonwealth’s most beautiful horse farms and antebellum architecture surround the city known as the “Heart of the Bluegrass”. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.
