The Kentucky Derby Is a Day There’s only one Kentucky Derby, and watching it live at Churchill Downs in Louisville is on many people’s “bucket list.” Not just a horse race, the Derby is the focal point of weeks of springtime celebrating in Louisville, which is known for combining Southern traditions with Midwestern friendliness. Here are some fun facts associated with the $2 million race for three-year-old thoroughbreds that’s known as “the greatest two minutes in sports” and the oldest continuing sporting event in the United States. The 140th Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday May 3, 2014 at Churchill Downs, which has hosted thoroughbred racing since 1875. The 147 acre track just south of downtown Louisville will host its 2014 spring meet from April 26 through June 29, with live racing most days except Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The winner of the first Derby in 1875 was Aristides, whose jockey, Oliver Lewis, was an African American. Fifteen horses ran in that first Derby; up to 20 now compete in the race. In 1919, Sir Barton was the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby and then go on and triumph in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. This difficult feat, known as the Triple Crown, has been repeated 10 times. The most recent Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978. The fastest winning time for the 1/1-4-mile Derby was posted by Secretariat in 1973. After blazing a 1 minute 59 second finish in the Derby, Secretariat went on to win the Triple Crown. Three fillies have beaten the boys to claim the coveted blanket of more than 500 roses awarded to the Derby winner. They were Favored Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980 and Winning Colors in 1988. Diane Crump was the first female jockey to “run for the roses.” She rode in 1970. At age 54, Willie Shoemaker was the oldest jockey to win the Derby, riding Ferdinand to victory in 1986. The youngest winning jockey was 15 year-old Alonzo Clayton aboard Azra in 1892. 2

at the Races Unlike Any Other In recent years, crowds for the Derby have reached nearly 165,000 spectators. Some 15 million viewers now tune into NBC’s television coverage of the race. About 2,000 media credentials are issued for journalists to cover the Derby. Celebrity watching along Millionaires’ Row in the clubhouse is almost as popular as watching the races on Derby day. Among the most famous recent spectators were Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip of Great Britain, who were in attendance in 2007. Many Derby-goers traditionally drink a bourbonbased concoction known as the mint julep. An estimated 120,000 mint juleps are consumed on Derby day at Churchill Downs. This requires more than 7,800 liters of bourbon, 450,000 pounds of shaved ice and 2,250 pounds of mint. Weather on Derby Day can be somewhat unpredictable, although the average high temperature for the first Saturday in May is a pleasant 72 degrees. The warmest recorded Derby high was 94 degrees in 1959; the coldest was 47 degrees in 1957.

For more information on the Derby, visit www.kentuckyderby.com. You can find a spring racing schedule at www.churchilldowns.com. places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Our community is centrally located less than a half hour’s drive from a wildlife refuge and recreation area operated by the USDA Forest Service and from two state resorts built around lakes accessible for boating, swimming, fishing and other recreational opportunities. The community is home to numerous historic sites and viewing opportunities, including Adsmore Museum, the Amoss House Museum (a circa 1857 antebellum mansion), Newsom’s Old Mill Store (home of the nationally renowned Col. Newsom’s Aged Kentucky Country Ham), the Caldwell County Railroad Museum, Civil War traces, the Cherokee Trail of Tears and a downtown commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Districts. 12

Smartphones & mobile devices • Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market. Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you should report the crime to the FBI IC3 and to the Federal Trade Commission. They are available online at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft. You can also call them at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261 You can mail in a complaint to: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580 Source: By the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Command, http://www.nationalguard.mil/newarchives/2013/09/091913-Protect.aspx 13

Clark Center for History, Kentucky’s only Frank Lloyd Wright home, Daniel Boone’s Gravesite, to scenic covered bridges. Located in the beautiful Kentucky River Valley, Frankfort, Kentucky’s state capital, offers tours of its historic downtown district, fine dining and shopping with unique antiques and crafts.

Harrodsburg Some people say Harrodsburg is where Kentucky began. It was the first permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies and was established in 1774. Many of the homes and buildings around town reflect Harrodsburg’s more than 200 years of history and culture. Old Fort Harrod showcases the early frontier life with live craftspeople.

LaGrange With its historic architecture filling the downtown area, LaGrange offers guests the relaxed pace of a Kentucky small-town.

There hasn’t been an earthquake in Lebanon, Kentucky for decades but things never stop moving in Marion County’s largest city. With its lively downtown chock full of eclectic dining and entertainment to its special events and festivals, the Lebanon National Cemetery, historic homes and landmarks, rich Civil War and religious heritage and a robust genealogy research facility, Lebanon keeps a steady beat.

Lexington Originally called Masterson’s Station, the name changed to Lexington in 1775 when traveling hunters heard of the Revolutionary War battle in Lexington, Massachusetts. The city is home to Transylvania University, the first college west of the Alleghenies. Many of the Commonwealth’s most beautiful horse farms and antebellum architecture surround the city known as the “Heart of the Bluegrass”. Oldham Farm Tours – A Real Life Show & Tell “Mommy, why are some eggs green”? Our curiosity with nature starts at a very young age! As we get older, that childlike curiosity turns to more mature things such as how food gets on our table, or sometimes, plain old creative curiosity sparks a yearning to learn how wool is spun into glorious fabrics. At Oldham Farm Tours, there’s no age limit to good, clean fun and natural curiosity! From alpaca to race horses, from dairy cows to buffalo, most of our 15 tours can be customized for all ages. Come enjoy our real life show & tell on your next getaway!

Milk Doesn’t Come in a Glass Visit Acorn Lane Petting Zoo at Boone Gardiner to begin your fun experience feeding and learning about rescued animals and fish…all living in reclaimed greenhouses! In addition to being a full-service garden center, they whet your child’s appetite for their next adventure. After Acorn Lane Petting Zoo, you must visit Yew Dell Botanical Gardens to take in all the natural beauty surrounding their very own stone castle! Harvest Home Dairy is a working family dairy farm who supplies milk commercially and makes their own artisan cheese. Depending on the season, you might even see baby calves! This tour is a fascinating look at how dairy cows are taken care of and how a working dairy farm is operated.

Horses of a Different Color There’s nothing average about our horse farm tours! Rest your head and hooves at our 9-acre Bluegrass Country Estate Luxury B&B, then visit Hermitage Farm & International Training Center who has made a name for itself throughout history by raising Triple Crown winners. Now open to the public for tours for the first time, Hermitage showcases their thoroughbred operation and their love for carriage driving! The owner of another Oldham horse farm is children’s book author, Ellie Troutman. Ellie’s book, the “Tails of Windy Meadows,” takes you on a tour of her horse farm for an intimate look at life on her farm - through the eyes of her animals. Extremely popular with children and adults alike, an after-tour gallop to Ellie’s toy store, the Treasured Child, on historic Main Street in La Grange, is a sure bet!

Award-Winning Conservation Practices Through Oldham Farm Tours, learn about grass-fed and grain-fed beef and about biodynamic farming practices from many award-winning Oldham County farmers. Learn about Kentucky native plants at Meadowview Farm & Natural Habitat Garden. Visit Denise at Bluebonnets and Bluegrass Alpaca farm to learn about raising alpaca, shearing for wool, then learn to turn that wool into artwork and fine fabrics from a true artist!

Oldham Farm Tour Getaways At Oldham Farm Tours, our goal is for you to come curious, and leave with a new excitement and appreciation for nature! With over 15 farm tour experiences available, we can help plan your getaway from it all at www.OldhamTours.com through our Live Chat or by calling 800-813-9953. 24

Paris / Bourbon County

Radcliff / Fort Knox Radcliff / Fort Knox is known as the home of the nation’s gold depository. Take Exit 102 off I-65 for the 12-mile drive to the area. You can see the gold vault, but only from the road! Visit the General George Patton Museum for the finest collection of Patton artifacts in the world.

Shelbyville Shelby County is known as the “Saddlebred Horse Capital of the World.” Acres and acres of rolling hills, black fences and horses of many breeds dot the landscape surrounding Shelbyville. For the equine enthusiast, Shelby County offers some of the most exciting competitions in the nation. The Shelbyville Horse Show held in early August at the Shelby County Fairgrounds and the Shelby County Fair Horse Show, as well as many other horse shows throughout the year, all make for a lot of “purebred” fun.

NORTH CENTRAL REGION

Located just 15 miles northeast of Lexington, Paris is a charming town worthy of a visit. “Horses, History and Hospitality” is our motto and is evident everywhere. Visit Hopewell Museum, Duncan Tavern, Bourbon County Courthouse, Colville Covered Bridge, Cane Ridge Shrine and Wallis House & Arboretum. Reed Valley Orchard is a popular attraction where one can pick their own berries, apples, pears and walk the nature trail. Reserve a tour of Claiborne Farm by calling 859-987-2330 to visit the famous breeding operation and the final resting place of the 1973 Triple Crown Winner, Secretariat. Our Mims Retirement Haven, located in rural Bourbon County, is now home to many retired brood mares. Call Jeanne Mirabito at 859-227-6304 for a tour. Donations are welcome. Paris also offers a variety of food and shopping experiences. So take time to visit Paris, Kentucky in beautiful Bourbon County. It is worth the trip!

Shepherdsville 53705_LSMF_WTG_ad.indd 2/20/14 Shepherdsville located in Bullitt County, 17 miles south1 of Louisville is the start of 8:35 AM the Bourbon Trail. Jim Beam Distillery is just 2 minutes off I-65 at the Clermont exit, where you can have a weekend getaway or a week long adventure.

Points of Interest: Bernheim Forest • Kart Kountry • Hawks View Gallery & Cafe • Wight-Meyer & Brooks Hill Wineries

Kentucky Bucket List Visit the Harland Sanders Café and Museum in Corbin. It’s where the Colonel first served his fried chicken with “11 herbs and spices” and birthed an internationally fried chicken recipe. 25

Versailles / Millville / Midway / Nonesuch Nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass thoroughbred tradition is Versailles in Woodford County. View magnificent horse farms as you drive on U.S. 60 or detour onto KY 1681 to enjoy one of Kentucky’s most beautiful scenic byways. Stroll along historic tree lined streets in Midway, Nonesuch and Versailles while you enjoy the antique shops, specialty shops and cozy cafe’s. Former President Bush and Queen Elizabeth II continue to visit these quaint towns and beautiful countryside.

NORTH CENTRAL REGION

Warsaw / Sparta / Glencoe Gallatin County is the hub of motorsport racing in Kentucky. The Kentucky Speedway, a high speed tri-oval, is home to numerous auto racing events throughout the year. This sporting event will attract many who just love anything “racing”. Gallatin County attracts premium boaters and fishermen. Located on the Ohio River and having one of the most beautiful marinas in the state, it’s a fisherman’s dream destination. Warsaw is a quaint old river town with many scenic and historic home sites. Sparta is the home of Kentucky Speedway that lies just off I-71. Glencoe, our most northern city and home of our newest Gallatin County Park, offers walking trails, picnicking, fishing, or just a good time with nature. Located just minutes from Gallatin County are several casinos for those who love gambling, this is your dream come true. Points of Interest: Kentucky Speedway •Warsaw Riverfront • Belterra Casino • Eagle Creek • Craig’s Creek • Ohio River • 127 Yard Sale • Historic Homes • Markland Locks & Dam • Boating, Fishing & Camping

Winchester Winchester and Clark County enjoy a special location advantage near the I-64 and Mountain Parkway interchange. The area’s strategic location at the major highway turnoff toward the Appalachia highlands renders this region a true “gateway” between the rolling hills of the Bluegrass (Thoroughbred Country) and the mountains of Daniel Boone Forest.

Kentucky Bucket List See a moonbow at Cumberland Falls, near Corbin. This natural wonder, seen regularly only here and at Victoria Falls in Africa, is best viewed under a full or almost full moon on very clear nights when humidity is low. That usually means in all or winter (which might also mean a flask of bourbon for warmth). 26

Dawkins Line Rail Trail The Dawkins Line Rail Trail is joining many other adventure tourism attractions in the region supported by outdoor enthusiasts as the longest rail trail in Kentucky.

NORTH CENTRAL REGION

The Dawkins Line Rail Trail was officially opened on June 15, 2013 by Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear. The first 18-mile leg of the trail, from Hagerhill in Johnson County to Royalton in Magoffin County, was opened to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. This 18-mile section features 24 trestles and 662-foot Gun Creek Tunnel. Management of the trail was placed under the Kentucky Department of Parks. When completed, the Dawkins Line will be 36 miles long and will wind through Johnson, Magoffin and Breathitt counties. The project has support from several trail organizations and is expected to help expand the local tourism economy. The trail name comes from the Dawkins Lumber Company, which developed the rail line in the early 1900s for timber harvesting and transportation. Located in the heart of the US 23 Country Music Highway. Home to Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle, a visit to Paintsville would not be complete without a tour of “Butcher Holler.” Visit the US 23 Country Music Highway Museum where we feature live bluegrass music at “Front Porch Pickin” every Thursday at 7pm and exhibit memorabilia about the many US 23 Country Music Highway stars. Travel back in time to 1850 at the Mountain Homeplace. Tour the grounds of this working farm to see history come alive by viewing a family cabin, oneroom school, blacksmith shop, church, farm animals, and much more. http://parks.ky.gov/parks/recreationparks/dawkins-line/default.aspx

Burnside

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more. Historic downtown Campbellsville offers 190 businesses and services. 48
