Celebrate Spring with Kentucky’s Colorful Blossoms

entucky’s famous dogwood and redbud trees are blooming. Get out and enjoy Kentucky’s spring before the blossoms disappear for another year. While you can glimpse these wonders of nature throughout the state, focus on several particular locations that offer the best prospects for viewing concentrations of redbuds’ striking pink blossoms and snowy white dogwood blooms.

For dogwoods, head to Paducah in western Kentucky, where the city has designated a Dogwood Trail that snakes 10 miles through leafy residential neighborhoods. April 2015 is the 51st anniversary of the Dogwood Trail Celebration, which is highlighted by nighttime illumination of trees and gardens along the trail. The celebration stretches over several weeks in mid-April while the trees are in bloom. Follow the signs strategically located at each turn in the trail and you’ll see many varieties of dogwoods, as well as Japanese maples, weeping cherry trees, redbuds and other flowering species. A group bike ride expected to attract more than 250 cyclists and the Dogwood Art & Photography Contest are featured events during the celebration. For more information about the Dogwood Trail Celebration, visit www.paducahky.gov/paducah/dogwood-trail. Redbuds are found in all their colorful glory throughout the hills of eastern Kentucky. One of the best places to start a redbud tracking trip is Barbourville in the state’s southeastern corner.

Here the annual Union College Redbud Festival of Appalachian Culture celebrates the mountains’ springtime beauty with cycling events, photo contest, beauty pageant and Kentucky authors’ forum. This year’s festival is set for April 17-18. For more information, visit www.redbudfestky.com. Follow U.S. 25E south from Barbourville and you’re sure to see a profusion of the distinctive pink blooms on the surrounding hillsides. When you reach Pineville, stop at Pine Mountain State Resort Park and take a hike on one of its many trails and examine the blossoms at close range. Other recommended routes for redbud viewing include U.S. 23, the Country Music Highway, which traces Kentucky’s eastern border from Ashland to the Virginia state line; the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway along state roads 15, 715 and 77; the Hal Rogers Parkway between London and Hazard; and the Kingdom Come Parkway along U.S. 119 between Pineville and Harlan. places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape. 9

Columbus Columbus is a Hickman County town on the Mississippi River. It was established in 1804 as Iron Banks, named for the towering river banks, and incorporated as Columbus, for the explorer, in 1820. Fulton Fulton is located in the Jackson Purchase region of Western Kentucky. The city is situated on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. Fulton is served by the Purchase Parkway, which connects to Interstate 24. Reelfoot Lake and National Wildlife Refuge, Kentucky Lake and State Park, Lake Barkley State Park, Land Between the Lakes National Recreational Area and Columbus-Belmont Battlefield State Park are all within an hour’s drive.

Places to go Bardstown Incorporated in 1788, Bardstown is the state’s second oldest city and is best known for “My Old Kentucky Home,” the antebellum mansion that inspired Stephen Foster to write the state’s official song. The historic home now graces the Kentucky quarter. From trains, bourbon, the civil war, historic homes and “Stephen Foster-The Musical,” Bardstown has numerous attractions to see.

Bellevue / Newport Founded in 1795, Newport has an excellent mix of historic sites and contemporary developments. You can see the Cincinnati skyline as well as walk across the Ohio River on the Purple People Bridge. There is plenty to do for all ages. Berea Known as the “Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky,” Berea is home to many of the State’s leading professional artists and craft people. Carrollton The first settlement at the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers was established in 1794 and called Port William. The name was changed to Carrollton in honor of Charles Carroll, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Covington The City of Covington offers some of the best entertainment venues in the region. Main Strasse Village offers a variety of restaurants, taverns, and retail shops. The City is home to the 704 acre Devou Park, numerous other parks, playgrounds, and pools, two public golf courses, and the Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex, which has four baseball fields and water park.

Danville In the heart of Danville is Constitution Square Park where ten constitutional conventions took place. The park has a replica meetinghouse, courthouse and jail, as well as the original circa 1790s post office. 21

Harlan Harlan is one of Kentucky’s most ruggedly beautiful mountain areas. It’s paradise for hikers and campers. The most spectacular scenery is along the Little Shepherd Trail, winding for 38 miles along the crest of the 2,800 foot-high Pine Mountain.

London Walk over the famous “Wilderness Road” (in Levi Jackson State Park) where over 200,000 pioneers traveled to Kentucky during the twenty years from 1775 to 1796. McHarque’s Mill, a restored water-powered grist mill, features a world class collection of millstones. The Mountain Life Museum, with its pioneer settlement, and Indian artifacts and camping, offer London’s visitors an abundance of things to do.

Louisa Founded in 1823, Louisa / Lawrence County is located off the US 23-Country Music Highway and home to Yatesville Lake State Park. During the Civil War, President James Garfield occupied Louisa form December 1861 until the war was over. Louisa is also home to Fred M. Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Festivals include an Old Fashion County Fair, 1st weekend in August and one of the largest Eastern KY Festivals, Lawrence County Septemberfest, held the first weekend after Labor Day each year. Morehead is a great area for outdoor recreation. It is best known for Cave Run Lake with 8270 acres and 166 miles of shoreline. Some call it Kentucky’s “best kept secret”. This scenic lake is outstanding for sailing and fishing. Cave Run is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. While visiting Morehead, don’t miss the fascinating collection at the Kentucky Folk Art Center on 1st Street which is home to artwork constructed from found objects made by renowned Kentucky Folk artists. Places to go Bowling Green During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more. Historic downtown Campbellsville offers 190 businesses and services.

Cave City Cave City is the gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park, a U.S. Biosphere reserve and a World Heritage Site. There are many above ground attractions including water sports, a Wild West show, horseback riding, miniature golf, go carts, water slide, several museums and a Downtown Antique and Collectable District. Cave City offers more activities than you can do in one day!

Franklin Located 18 miles south of Bowling Green, Franklin was used as a dueling ground by Sam Houston and others until 1827.
