The Kentucky Travel Industry Association announces the following winners from across the state as its Top 10 Festivals & Events for Summer 2014. W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival, Henderson, June 7-14. This free music festival is a celebration of the life and music of former resident W.C. Handy, ”Father of the Blues”, and showcases some of the nation’s best blues artists. Top-notch summer productions are underway at many outdoor theaters across Kentucky, some of which have been providing family entertainment for more than a half-century. A newer addition to the lineup – an outdoor drama based on the Hatfield-McCoy feud – returns this summer for its second season at a Pike County amphitheater located in the heart of the region where the conflict played out. “Blood Song: The Story of the Hatfields and the McCoys” is running weekends from July 25 through Sept. 1 at the HatfieldMcCoy Outdoor Theater in McCarr, Ky., near Pikeville. Produced by Artists Collaborative Theatre of Elkhorn City, “Blood Song” is attracting visitors eager also to view local sites made famous by the feuding clans from Kentucky and West Virginia who battled in the late 19th century. Tony Tackett, executive director of the Pike County Tourism Commission, said organizers are expecting bigger crowds this summer, particularly during the Hatfield-McCoy Heritage Days festival Aug. 29-31. The amphitheater, located in the heart of feud country near the Kentucky-West Virginia border, features bleacher-style seating, but patrons are welcome to bring lawn chairs. From Shakespeare to Stephen Foster, live performances of dramas, comedies and musicals excite the mind and lift the spirit. Here’s a list of some other prominent summer productions. Smartphones & mobile devices • Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market. Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. It’s something that’s never been done before in this country – a river steamboat reaching the age of 100. In October, 2014, that milestone will be achieved by the historic Belle of Louisville, and it will be an event to remember! The Belle is steam-powered and paddlewheel-driven, with engines that are older than the boat. Constructed in the 1890s (as far as we can tell) her engines were used before they were installed on her when the boat was built in 1914 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She began as the Idlewild and served first as a ferry and day packet (freight) boat, and was outfitted for passengers, too – good thinking for her future, since with the expansion of railroads and the new trucking industry, packet work saw a natural decline by the end of the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Idlewild shifted primarily to excursion work, and it became her mainstay from then on. She led a vagabond’s life as a “tramp” vessel, going from town to town, offering short excursion cruises and then moving on. With her shallow draft of only five feet, she traveled on every navigable waterway in the inland rivers system. In 1948, her name changed to the Avalon, and she became the most widely-traveled river steamboat of her size in the nation. By 1961, with expenses exceeding income, her owners planned to demolish her; but fate intervened and she was put her up for auction instead. The highest bid came from Jefferson County, Kentucky, and the Avalon was brought to Louisville to begin a new life on the Ohio River’s south shore. She was renamed the Belle of Louisville in the fall of 1962, and she is now Louisville’s legendary lady. The Belle will be celebrating her centennial with the Festival of Riverboats from October 14 – 19. Six riverboats will fill Louisville’s waterfront, offering cruises and special events with a lot of activities happening on land, as well. The involvement of the whole community will make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If your schedule won’t allow you to be in Louisville at that time, you can still travel on this magnificent vessel during the summer and fall. The Belle runs two-hour cruises on most Thursday evenings through July, and on Friday evenings, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons during July and August. She continues Saturday and Sunday afternoon cruises through October (the schedule changes during the festival) and, in addition, she offers some great special events: Fireworks Cruises on July 3rd, cruises through McAlpine Lock, Oktoberfests in the fall, and a Boo Cruise for children near Halloween provide family fun and a steamboat adventure. Her sister boat, the diesel-powered riverboat Spirit of Jefferson, also runs one- and two-hour excursion cruises throughout the summer, fall, and early winter. With both vessels offering Ohio River experiences, there’s always something going on.

Originally called Masterson’s Station, the name changed to Lexington in 1775 when traveling hunters heard of the Revolutionary War battle in Lexington, Massachusetts. The city is home to Transylvania University, the first college west of the Alleghenies. Thousands of people from all around the world have visited Pike County, Kentucky to immerse themselves one of America’s most interesting historical destinations, Hatfield and McCoy Feud Country. Pike County is home to most of the significant Hatfield-McCoy feud sites, and as a result of the recent spike in the feud’s popularity, Pikeville/Pike County offers two types of tours of these sites. The Hatfield-McCoy Driving Tour is a self-guided tour, which includes all of the sites, both in Kentucky and West Virginia, of the feud. An optional Hatfield-McCoy Driving Tour CD is available for purchase below and in our store at the Hampton Inn on 831 Hambley Blvd, Pikeville. The audio CD serves as a tour guide for the feud sites, and offers professional voice talent and music, which spices up the already wonderful tour. See the sites where the feuding actually took place. Get your photo at the Randolph McCoy homeplace where the New Years Eve attack occurred, or in front of “Preacher Anse” Hatfield’s cabin where the infamous hog trial transpired, also the location where Roseanna and Johnse fell in forbidden love. Hatfield-McCoy Guided Tours are also available, which feature a professional historian on an air-conditioned bus that takes you to each feud site within Pikeville City. This tour allows visitors to ask questions and learn more about feud lore in the area where the feuding happened. Pike County features a wealth of lodging options for any budget. The Hilton Garden Inn, as well as the Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn and Landmark Inn are conveniently located in Pikeville City. Also located in Pikeville are two economy hotels, Brookshire Inn, which is located within walking distance to shopping areas, and the Hatfield McCoy Lodge at the Riverside, which is a short drive to the Pikeville feud sites. Louisa Founded in 1823, Louisa / Lawrence County is located off the US 23-Country Music Highway and home to Yatesville Lake State Park. During the Civil War, President James Garfield occupied Louisa form December 1861 until the war was over. Louisa is also home to Fred M. Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Festivals include an Old Fashion County Fair, 1st weekend in August and one of the largest Eastern KY Festivals, Lawrence County Septemberfest, held the first weekend after Labor Day each year.

Morehead Morehead is a great area for outdoor recreation. It is best known for Cave Run Lake with 8270 acres and 166 miles of shoreline. Some call it Kentucky’s “best kept secret”. This scenic lake is outstanding for sailing and fishing. Cave Run is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. Battle of Big Hill Battle of Big Hill - Jackson County, McKee, Kentucky. The Battle of Big Hill reenactment will be held again this year in Jackson County, Kentucky with both a change of date and venue. Previous years have seen the BoBH held at the Jackson Energy Farm on the third weekend of August, but a variety of circumstances have led to the decision to move the reenactment to the north entrance of McKee on US HWY 421 on the fourth weekend of August. This situation will hopefully make the venue more accessible to travelers, and the fourth Saturday of August falls on the 23rd this year, corresponding with the historical date of the original battle.

Another reason for bringing visitors to the north entrance of McKee is to promote the establishment of our new hiking and equestrian trailhead, the Big Turtle Trailhead, which now connects McKee city limits with the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. We invite everyone to learn more about our new trailhead so you may plan an excursion on future visits. The Battle of Big Hill reenactment opens to the public at 10:00 am Saturday morning with various events including the Ladies Tea at 1:00 pm, the battle reenactment at 3:00, and the Civil War Ball at 8:00 pm. The Civil War Ball will be held at Bond Memorial Park in south McKee under the picnic shelters next to the ball park. Bond Memorial Park in McKee is home each year to Family Fun Night, a kidoriented festival that starts at 4:00 pm. We invite reenactors and spectators to join us for Family Fun Night after the battle, and to stay for the Civil War Ball, which will feature the renowned musicianship of Jackson County natives Gene Gatts and Ralph Marcum. You may expect all usual amenities. After the reenactment, a memorial recognition will be held for the late Ronnie Robinson, who was instrumental in helping to organize reenactors for the Battle of Big Hill at its inception. On Sunday, August 24, the reenactment opens to the public at 12:00 noon, with a second battle to be held at 3:00 pm. Places to go Bowling Green During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings. 55

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more.
