Sample Kentucky Sweets S

everal types of scrumptious sweets are produced in Kentucky, and the factories where they’re made generally welcome visitors for tours and tastings. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day season than by visiting one of these factories where distinctive Kentucky candies are made by hand? Bourbon balls, pulled cream candy, Modjeskas and Derby-Pie® are a few of the varieties of confections made in the Bluegrass State. The family-owned factories that manufacture these sweets are located in towns like Lancaster, Lawrenceburg and Mt. Sterling, as well as bigger cities of Louisville, Frankfort and Lexington. Bourbon balls are probably the most widely known Kentuckymade candy. Since 1938, Rebecca-Ruth Candy Co. in Frankfort (www.rebeccaruth.com) has been blending bourbon and chocolate to make a tasty sweet. The creamy center is made with Evan Williams 100 proof bourbon, covered in rich chocolate and crowned with a pecan half. The story of Rebecca-Ruth Candy actually began in 1919 with two industrious substitute schoolteachers who decided they were better candy makers than educators. Trial and error eventually produced the unique recipe for the bourboninfused chocolates. Despite setbacks that included the Great Depression and a fire that destroyed all the candy-making equipment, the company persevered and is still owned by descendants of co-founder Ruth Booe. Mt. Sterling’s Ruth Hunt Candy Co. (www.ruthhuntcandy.com) began in 1921 with another enterprising woman who used her family recipes to make candies she sold from her home. Today, the factory produces 70 varieties of sweets, among which the Blue Monday chocolate and creamed-candy bar is the most famous. Ruth Hunt candies have been served in the White House and other prominent venues. The famous Modjeskas produced by the Bauer Candy Co. in Lawrenceburg (www.bauerscandy.com) are named for a

4

Where They’re Made striking Polish actress, Madame Helena Modjeska. After she appeared in Louisville in 1883, a local confectioner was so impressed with Modjeska’s beauty that he asked permission to name a sweet in her honor. Made with a creamy marshmallow center hand-dipped into a rich caramel, Modjeskas are shipped throughout the U.S. and abroad. Bauer Candy Co. is now in the fourth generation of family ownership. Established in 1961, Mom Blakeman’s Candy Co. in Lancaster traces its roots to Maxine “Mom” Blakeman, who began making creamed pull candy in her home n the 1940s. Hand-made with real butter and sugar, Mom’s candy attracted the attention of Col. Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken, who encouraged her to market the tasty sweet beyond central Kentucky. www.momblakemanscandy.com Another manufacturer of creamed pull candy is MAM Candy Co. in Hodgenville (www.mamcandy.com). The Mark family owners use traditional Kentucky recipes perfected by relatives in the 1920s. Old Kentucky Chocolates in Lexington (www.oldkycandy.com) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. Its bourbon balls are infused with Jim Beam whiskey, and the company also makes a popular pulled cream candy. If all these sweets don’t sate your palate, have a slice of Derby-Pie®. Born in the 1960s at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Derby-Pie® is still the U.S.-patented property of the Kern family. At the Kern’s Kitchen plant in Louisville, only two people know the complete recipe for this rich chocolate pastry. www.derbypie.com Check with the factories to make sure they’re open for tours when you want to visit. places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Central City Are you looking to re-locate or vacation in a peaceful, friendly, “just the right size town?” If so, visit Central City, Kentucky, where small town hospitality abounds, a rich musical heritage originates, and an eclectic environment supplies your every need!

The community is home to numerous historic sites and viewing opportunities, including Adsmore Museum, the Amoss House Museum (a circa 1857 antebellum mansion), Newsom’s Old Mill Store (home of the nationally renowned Col. Newsom’s Aged Kentucky Country Ham), the Caldwell County Railroad Museum, Civil War traces, the Cherokee Trail of Tears and a downtown commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Districts.

your online identity with these cyber-tiPs

WESTERN REGION

Protect

Smartphones & mobile devices • Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market. Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you should report the crime to the FBI IC3 and to the Federal Trade Commission. They are available online at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft. You can also call them at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261 You can mail in a complaint to: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580 Source: By the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Command, http://www.nationalguard.mil/newarchives/2013/09/091913-Protect.aspx

Harrodsburg Some people say Harrodsburg is where Kentucky began. It was the first permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies and was established in 1774. Many of the homes and buildings around town reflect Harrodsburg’s more than 200 years of history and culture. Old Fort Harrod showcases the early frontier life with live craftspeople.

Lexington

Originally called Masterson’s Station, the name changed to Lexington in 1775 when traveling hunters heard of the Revolutionary War battle in Lexington, Massachusetts. The city is home to Transylvania University, the first college west of the Alleghenies. Many of the Commonwealth’s most beautiful horse farms and antebellum architecture surround the city known as the “Heart of the Bluegrass”.

For example, if the given words are volley, field, and bearing, then the answer would be ball, because the word ball can be added to each of the other words to form volleyball, ballfield, and ball bearing.

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.
