Explore The Bluegrass State M

any associate Kentucky with green hills and horse farms, but locals know the brilliant fall colors offer one of the best times to explore the Bluegrass state.

Kentucky State Parks allow travelers the perfect getaway when the crisp air takes over, with cozy cottages, trailblazing hikes and breathtaking views. Pine Mountain State Resort Park, nestled in eastern Kentucky, places guests at one of the highest points in the region to overlook the changing colors. Parks are spread throughout the state so travelers are never far from an overnight that offers adventure right outside of their door. Another unique spot to enjoy the fall temperatures is Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, recently designated as a founding member of Discovery Destinations. Stay on the 3,000-acre property dedicated to hands-on experiences and exploration with engaging programming and plenty of room for relaxation. Enjoy hikes, paddles down the Kentucky River, bird watching and much more all while staying in one of the 13 restored Shaker buildings. As fall and winter temperatures settle in, there is no better way to warm up than with a true “Kentucky hug” – also known as the warm feeling you receive after a sip of bourbon. Kentucky is responsible for 95 percent of the world’s bourbon and the historic distilleries allow travelers to walk through for a first-hand look at the history and making. This time of year offers guests wonderful views of the land and historic buildings, plus unique tours by candlelight at select distilleries. This is also the time of year where everyone bustles around looking for the perfect holiday gift. Set yourself apart this year by visiting Berea, Kentucky for a thoughtful gift the receiver will cherish. Berea is a thriving community of talented artisans, ranging from wood working to jewelry making and even glass blowing. These artists offer workshops yearround, but their Make it, Take it, Gift it lineup gives shoppers a chance to hand-make their present with those who have perfected the craft. While in Berea, make sure to stay at the Historic Boone Tavern and enjoy one of their warm meals, with a delicious heaping of spoon bread. Event lineups are full in Kentucky so that everyone can easily get in the spirit. For those interested in fall fun, Louisville’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular boasts over 5,000 carved pumpkins leading the way through an unbelievable ¼-mile walk. Interested in carving your own? Visit Evan’s Orchard in Georgetown or Jackson’s Orchard in Bowling Green to pick your pumpkin. As winter draws in, don’t miss the world’s only underground light show at Mega Caverns in Louisville or Lexington’s favorite Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park. So whether you are looking for fall views or holiday fun, Kentucky has something for everyone this time of year. Enjoy the crisp air, take in the beautiful views and enjoy Kentucky’s offerings. places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Central City Are you looking to re-locate or vacation in a peaceful, friendly, “just the right size town?” If so, visit Central City, Kentucky, where small town hospitality abounds, a rich musical heritage originates, and an eclectic environment supplies your every need!

Feel the movement in this vibrant river town, located off Interstate 24 in Western Kentucky. Visit the Lower Town studios/galleries and discover objects d’art you’ll treasure and meet the artists who created them. The elegant displays in the Museum of the American Quilter’s society highlight the vigorous rebirth of quiltmaking that began in the 1970’s. The River Heritage Museum, a “Save America’s Treasures” project, features interactive exhibits that tell the stories of the four rivers region. Just around the corner, the Carson Center boasts a year-round performance schedule featuring big name entertainers and professional traveling productions. Explore the heart of historic downtown while strolling along tree-lined streets and brick sidewalks that take you past 19th-century buildings filled with antiques, boutiques, coffee and specialty shops, one-of-a-kind eateries and more. Lexington Originally called Masterson’s Station, the name changed to Lexington in 1775 when traveling hunters heard of the Revolutionary War battle in Lexington, Massachusetts. NORTH CENTRAL REGION

Paris / Bourbon County Located just 15 miles northeast of Lexington, Paris is a charming town worthy of a visit. “Horses, History and Hospitality” is our motto and is evident everywhere. Visit Hopewell Museum, Duncan Tavern, Bourbon County Courthouse, Colville Covered Bridge, Cane Ridge Shrine and Wallis House & Arboretum. Reed Valley Orchard is a popular attraction where one can pick their own berries, apples, pears and walk the nature trail. Reserve a tour of Claiborne Farm by calling 859-987-2330 to visit the famous breeding operation and the final resting place of the 1973 Triple Crown Winner, Secretariat. Our Mims Retirement Haven, located in rural Bourbon County, is now home to many retired brood mares. Call Jeanne Mirabito at 859-227-6304 for a tour. Donations are welcome. Paris also offers a variety of food and shopping experiences. So take time to visit Paris, Kentucky in beautiful Bourbon County. It is worth the trip!

Radcliff / Fort Knox Radcliff / Fort Knox is known as the home of the nation’s gold depository. Take Exit 102 off I-65 for the 12-mile drive to the area. You can see the gold vault, but only from the road! Visit the General George Patton Museum for the finest collection of Patton artifacts in the world.

Shelbyville Shelby County is known as the “Saddlebred Horse Capital of the World.” Acres and acres of rolling hills, black fences and horses of many breeds dot the landscape surrounding Shelbyville. For the equine enthusiast, Shelby County offers some of the most exciting competitions in the nation. The Shelbyville Horse Show held in early August at the Shelby County Fairgrounds and the Shelby County Fair Horse Show, as well as many other horse shows throughout the year, all make for a lot of “purebred” fun.

Shepherdsville Shepherdsville located in Bullitt County, 17 miles south of Louisville is the start of the Bourbon Trail. Jim Beam Distillery is just 2 minutes off I-65 at the Clermont exit, where you can have a weekend getaway or a week long adventure. Points of Interest: Bernheim Forest • Kart Kountry • Hawks View Gallery & Cafe • Wight-Meyer & Brooks Hill Wineries 34

Versailles / Millville / Midway / Nonesuch Nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass thoroughbred tradition is Versailles in Woodford County. View magnificent horse farms as you drive on U.S. 60 or detour onto KY 1681 to enjoy one of Kentucky’s most beautiful scenic byways. Stroll along historic tree lined streets in Midway, Nonesuch and Versailles while you enjoy the antique shops, specialty shops and cozy cafe’s. Former President Bush and Queen Elizabeth II continue to visit these quaint towns and beautiful countryside. Gallatin County is the hub of motorsport racing in Kentucky. The Kentucky Speedway, a high speed tri-oval, is home to numerous auto racing events throughout the year. This sporting event will attract many who just love anything “racing”. Gallatin County attracts premium boaters and fishermen. Located on the Ohio River and having one of the most beautiful marinas in the state, it’s a fisherman’s dream destination. Warsaw is a quaint old river town with many scenic and historic home sites. Sparta is the home of Kentucky Speedway that lies just off I-71. Glencoe, our most northern city and home of our newest Gallatin County Park, offers walking trails, picnicking, fishing, or just a good time with nature. Located just minutes from Gallatin County are several casinos for those who love gambling, this is your dream come true. Points of Interest: Kentucky Speedway •Warsaw Riverfront • Belterra Casino • Eagle Creek • Craig’s Creek • Ohio River • 127 Yard Sale • Historic Homes • Markland Locks & Dam • Boating, Fishing & Camping

Winchester Winchester and Clark County enjoy a special location advantage near the I-64 and Mountain Parkway interchange. The area’s strategic location at the major highway turnoff toward the Appalachia highlands renders this region a true “gateway” between the rolling hills of the Bluegrass (Thoroughbred Country) and the mountains of Daniel Boone Forest.

Number Block Try to fill in the missing numbers. The missing numbers are integers between 0 and 12. The numbers in each row add up to totals to the right. The numbers in each column add up to the totals along the bottom. The diagonal lines also add up the totals to the right.

Places to go Bowling Green During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings. The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol. 49
