Thrill rides, tractor pulls, beauty contests and horse shows. Livestock competitions, crafts exhibits, delectable dishes and even demolition derbies. These are some of the staples of the scores of county fairs that sprout like mushrooms across Kentucky’s landscape between Memorial Day and early September. It takes help from thousands of volunteers to make the county fairgrounds around the Bluegrass State come to life. Then, tens of thousands of participants and spectators come together to learn, compete and be entertained with this slice of Americana. Befitting the Horse Capital of the World, horse shows are among the most popular attractions of Kentucky’s summertime fair circuit. Livestock shows give many youngsters their first taste of public displays and competition as they lead a bull through the ring or coax a hog through the show pen. Beauty pageants introduce many young women to the joy of selfexpression, camaraderie and success, and some go on to greater renown on bigger stages. In addition to the Miss County Fair pageants, many fairs also feature competitions for teenagers and children as well. With all the negative news of disasters, crime and conflicts, county fairs provide positive, down- to-earth excitement with something for everyone to enjoy. Make a point to attend at least one before the 2015 season draws to a close. Find a schedule of these events at the Kentucky Association of Fairs and Horse Shows at www.kafs.net/fairs/fairlist.php. Meanwhile, start planning your visit to the granddaddy of all fairs, the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville, Aug. 20-30, 2015. KentucKy Dam Village State Resort Park

Columbus Columbus is a Hickman County town on the Mississippi River. It was established in 1804 as Iron Banks, named for the towering river banks, and incorporated as Columbus, for the explorer, in 1820. Columbus is the site of Columbus-Belmont State Park, with 2.5 miles of self-guided interpretive trails. There is an outdoor experience that will satisfy everyone!

Fulton Fulton is located in the Jackson Purchase region of Western Kentucky. The city is situated on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. Fulton is served by the Purchase Parkway, which connects to Interstate 24. Reelfoot Lake and National Wildlife Refuge, Kentucky Lake and State Park, Lake Barkley State Park, Land Between the Lakes National Recreational Area and Columbus-Belmont Battlefield State Park are all within an hour’s drive.

Home of Bluegrass and More Ohio County, KY

n western Kentucky, lies Ohio County, geographically the fifth largest county in Kentucky. Inside the county lines, just off the Blue Moon of Kentucky Highway, one can walk the hills of Jerusalem Ridge at the Homeplace of the “Father of Bluegrass”, Bill Monroe, and take a guided tour through his boyhood home. Next, venture down the highway to Rosine, Kentucky to visit Uncle Pen’s Cabin and the gravesites of Bill, Pen and Monroe family members at the Rosine Cemetery. If it’s a Friday night, Rosine is filled with the pickin’ and playin’ of Bluegrass Music at the Historical Rosine Barn Jamboree. There is more to Ohio County than bluegrass and its history. North, on Highway 69, is Fordsville where you’ll find the Fordsville L & N Depot Museum rich in railroad history depicting the earliest of transportation and the economic boom it gave this small town. Just picture the rural lifestyle of the 1900’s through the distinctive collectibles and memorabilia within the museum. In Hartford, The Ohio County Park & Campground boasts the rustic replica of the early setters’ sanctuary, Old Fort Hartford, a great place for kids and photo opportunities. Twice a month, guys and gals test their skills at “Cowboy Fast Draw” competitions. The Kentucky State Championship Shoot, held in September, is a unique, ol’ time spectator sport. Places to go Bardstown Incorporated in 1788, Bardstown is the state’s second oldest city and is best known for “My Old Kentucky Home,” the antebellum mansion that inspired Stephen Foster to write the state’s official song. The historic home now graces the Kentucky quarter. From trains, bourbon, the civil war, historic homes and “Stephen Foster-The Musical,” Bardstown has numerous attractions to see.

Bellevue / Newport Founded in 1795, Newport has an excellent mix of historic sites and contemporary developments. Harrodsburg Some people say Harrodsburg is where Kentucky began. It was the first permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies and was established in 1774. Radcliff / Fort Knox Radcliff / Fort Knox is known as the home of the nation’s gold depository. Take Exit 102 off I-65 for the 12-mile drive to the area. You can see the gold vault, but only from the road! Visit the General George Patton Museum for the finest collection of Patton artifacts in the world.

Shelbyville Shelby County is known as the “Saddlebred Horse Capital of the World.” Acres and acres of rolling hills, black fences and horses of many breeds dot the landscape surrounding Shelbyville. Hazard

Harlan Harlan is one of Kentucky’s most ruggedly beautiful mountain areas. It’s paradise for hikers and campers. The most spectacular scenery is along the Little Shepherd Trail, winding for 38 miles along the crest of the 2,800 foot-high Pine Mountain.

London Walk over the famous “Wilderness Road” (in Levi Jackson State Park) where over 200,000 pioneers traveled to Kentucky during the twenty years from 1775 to 1796. McHarque’s Mill, a restored water-powered grist mill, features a world class collection of millstones. The Mountain Life Museum, with its pioneer settlement, and Indian artifacts and camping, offer London’s visitors an abundance of things to do.

Louisa Founded in 1823, Louisa / Lawrence County is located off the US 23-Country Music Highway and home to Yatesville Lake State Park. During the Civil War, President James Garfield occupied Louisa form December 1861 until the war was over. Louisa is also home to Fred M. Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Festivals include an Old Fashion County Fair, 1st weekend in August and one of the largest Eastern KY Festivals, Lawrence County Septemberfest, held the first weekend after Labor Day each year. 41

Places to go Bowling Green During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more. Historic downtown Campbellsville offers 190 businesses and services.

Cave City Cave City is the gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park, a U.S. Biosphere reserve and a World Heritage Site. There are many above ground attractions including water sports, a Wild West show, horseback riding, miniature golf, go carts, water slide, several museums and a Downtown Antique and Collectable District. Cave City offers more activities than you can do in one day!

Franklin Located 18 miles south of Bowling Green, Franklin was used as a dueling ground by Sam Houston and others until 1827. Because of a surveyor’s mistake and questionable ownership of a piece of land called the Kentucky-Tennessee Triangular Jag, the area was a safe place for duelists to avoid the law.

Horse Cave From “down home” to “down under” the city of Horse Cave is an intriguing area in Kentucky, featuring two major caves.
