Thrill rides, tractor pulls, beauty contests and horse shows. Livestock competitions, crafts exhibits, delectable dishes and even demolition derbies. These are some of the staples of the scores of county fairs that sprout like mushrooms across Kentucky’s landscape between Memorial Day and early September. It takes help from thousands of volunteers to make the county fairgrounds around the Bluegrass State come to life. Then, tens of thousands of participants and spectators come together to learn, compete and be entertained with this slice of Americana. Befitting the Horse Capital of the World, horse shows are among the most popular attractions of Kentucky’s summertime fair circuit. Livestock shows give many youngsters their first taste of public displays and competition as they lead a bull through the ring or coax a hog through the show pen. Beauty pageants introduce many young women to the joy of selfexpression, camaraderie and success, and some go on to greater renown on bigger stages. In addition to the Miss County Fair pageants, many fairs also feature competitions for teenagers and children as well. With all the negative news of disasters, crime and conflicts, county fairs provide positive, down- to-earth excitement with something for everyone to enjoy. Make a point to attend at least one before the 2015 season draws to a close. Find a schedule of these events at the Kentucky Association of Fairs and Horse Shows at www.kafs.net/fairs/fairlist.php. Meanwhile, start planning your visit to the granddaddy of all fairs, the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville, Aug. 20-30, 2015. The Kentucky State Fair website at www.kystatefair.org provides the lowdown on all the fun times to experience at one of America’s most popular state fairs. See you at the fair!

places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.
Central City Are you looking to re-locate or vacation in a peaceful, friendly, “just the right size town?” If so, visit Central City, Kentucky, where small town hospitality abounds, a rich musical heritage originates, and an eclectic environment supplies your every need!

Our community is centrally located less than a half hour’s drive from a wildlife refuge and recreation area operated by the USDA Forest Service and from two state resorts built around lakes accessible for boating, swimming, fishing and other recreational opportunities. The community is home to numerous historic sites and viewing opportunities, including Adsmore Museum, the Amoss House Museum (a circa 1857 antebellum mansion), Newsom’s Old Mill Store (home of the nationally renowned Col. Newsom’s Aged Kentucky Country Ham), the Caldwell County Railroad Museum, Civil War traces, the Cherokee Trail of Tears and a downtown commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Districts. 14

WESTERN REGION
Home of Bluegrass and More Ohio County, KY
n western Kentucky, lies Ohio County, geographically the fifth largest county in Kentucky. Inside the county lines, just off the Blue Moon of Kentucky Highway, one can walk the hills of Jerusalem Ridge at the Homeplace of the “Father of Bluegrass”, Bill Monroe, and take a guided tour through his boyhood home. Next, venture down the highway to Rosine, Kentucky to visit Uncle Pen’s Cabin and the gravesites of Bill, Pen and Monroe family members at the Rosine Cemetery. If it’s a Friday night, Rosine is filled with the pickin’ and playin’ of Bluegrass Music at the Historical Rosine Barn Jamboree. Local musicians and bands from all around come to play on stage at The Barn. You can stand on a star which marks the spot Bill Monroe stood during one of his performances at the barn.
There is more to Ohio County than bluegrass and its history. North, on Highway 69, is Fordsville where you’ll find the Fordsville L & N Depot Museum rich in railroad history depicting the earliest of transportation and the economic boom it gave this small town. Just picture the rural lifestyle of the 1900’s through the distinctive collectibles and memorabilia within the museum. In Hartford, The Ohio County Park & Campground boasts the rustic replica of the early setters’ sanctuary, Old Fort Hartford, a great place for kids and photo opportunities. Twice a month, guys and gals test their skills at “Cowboy Fast Draw” competitions. The Kentucky State Championship Shoot, held in September, is a unique, ol’ time spectator sport. Other amenities of the park include a 3.1 mile bike/walking trail, 1 mile nature trail, tennis court, basketballs courts, baseball field, volleyball courts, archery range, horse arena, picnic and playground areas with shelters. The Beaver Dam Park features a new state-of-the art amphitheater. Concerts and events like Merle Haggard, Jason Crabb, 38 Special, Hot Air Balloon Rides and 4th of July Fireworks fill the spring through fall calendar. Enjoy antique shopping and home cooking while visiting Beaver Dam. Tri-City Drive-In Theatre, one of very few still operating across the nation, invites you to the latest movie releases viewed from your vehicle. When it’s time to leave our fine county, take a drive down Highway 369 to the Rochester Ferry. This 100 year old River Ferry will portage you and your car, free of charge, across the Green River into Butler County as we bid you adieu and invite you back again. visitohiocountyky.com.

Winchester Winchester and Clark County enjoy a special location advantage near the I-64 and Mountain Parkway interchange. The area’s strategic location at the major highway turnoff toward the Appalachia highlands renders this region a true “gateway” between the rolling hills of the Bluegrass (Thoroughbred Country) and the mountains of Daniel Boone Forest.

Places to go Bowling Green During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.
Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.
