Places to go Bardstown Incorporated in 1788, Bardstown is the state’s second oldest city and is best known for “My Old Kentucky Home,” the antebellum mansion that inspired Stephen Foster to write the state’s official song. The historic home now graces the Kentucky quarter. From trains, bourbon, the civil war, historic homes and “Stephen Foster-The Musical,” Bardstown has numerous attractions to see.

Hazard

Harlan Harlan is one of Kentucky’s most ruggedly beautiful mountain areas. It’s paradise for hikers and campers. The most spectacular scenery is along the Little Shepherd Trail, winding for 38 miles along the crest of the 2,800 foot-high Pine Mountain.

London Walk over the famous “Wilderness Road” (in Levi Jackson State Park) where over 200,000 pioneers traveled to Kentucky during the twenty years from 1775 to 1796. McHarque’s Mill, a restored water-powered grist mill, features a world class collection of millstones. The Mountain Life Museum, with its pioneer settlement, and Indian artifacts and camping, offer London’s visitors an abundance of things to do.

Louisa Founded in 1823, Louisa / Lawrence County is located off the US 23-Country Music Highway and home to Yatesville Lake State Park. During the Civil War, President James Garfield occupied Louisa form December 1861 until the war was over. Louisa is also home to Fred M. Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Festivals include an Old Fashion County Fair, 1st weekend in August and one of the largest Eastern KY Festivals, Lawrence County Septemberfest, held the first weekend after Labor Day each year.

Places to go Bowling Green

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.

Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol. 48

Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more. Historic downtown Campbellsville offers 190 businesses and services.

Cave City Cave City is the gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park, a U.S. Biosphere reserve and a World Heritage Site. Franklin Located 18 miles south of Bowling Green, Franklin was used as a dueling ground by Sam Houston and others until 1827. Because of a surveyor’s mistake and questionable ownership of a piece of land called the Kentucky-Tennessee Triangular Jag, the area was a safe place for duelists to avoid the law.

A Trail of Heritage Google Bill Monroe what shows up? “The Father of Bluegrass,” the Bluegrass Boys, inducted into three Hall of Fames, Blue Moon of Kentucky, Gibson mandolin, possibly his dog Stormy, but, for sure Rosine, Kentucky. Why Rosine? This is the hometown of Bill Monroe. Born on Jerusalem Ridge off Highway 62, high on the ridge he created a music style called Bluegrass. Today you can visit his boyhood home and walk the hills Bill walked way back when. The Homeplace was restored in 2001. It is a pilgrimage bluegrass fans from Japan, Denmark, Hawaii and the next county over have made. Bill never saw the finished project but, he sat with an artist to get “just the right green” for the trim. The Homeplace is open 9:00-4:00 and 1:00-4:00 on Sunday. Tour guides, many who knew Bill, are pleased to share stories and history of the Monroe family. The second Sunday of the month from May-September you can hear free Bluegrass music played on the front porch. Bring your lawn chair and listen during “Pickin on the Porch”. Grab your chair and head to the Rosine Barn Jamboree. Located 1.3 miles down 62 E. in Rosine the Barn opens its doors every Friday night at 5:30-10:00 for more free bluegrass entertainment. The Barn is family friendly and such a good time it was voted one of The New York Times, “52 Best Places to Visit in 2016.” Sort of fun to be on the list with Sydney, Australia and Galapagos Islands! Down the road from the Rosine Barn Jamboree is the Rosine Cemetery. Here is where Bill came home to rest. You can see his gravesite, his parents, brothers Birch and Charlie and his beloved Uncle Pen. Uncle Pen, Pendleton Vandiver his mother’s brother. You recall a song Bill wrote for his Uncle Pen and the words “high on the hill and above the town you can hear it talk, you can hear it sing.” Yup, Uncle Pen and his fiddle. Drive through Rosine and follow the signs to Uncle Pen’s Cabin rebuilt on the exact spot in 2013 by Bill’s son James Monroe. Take a guided tour Wednesday – Saturday.
