Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Our community is centrally located less than a half hour’s drive from a wildlife refuge and recreation area operated by the USDA Forest Service and from two state resorts built around lakes accessible for boating, swimming, fishing and other recreational opportunities. The community is home to numerous historic sites and viewing opportunities, including Adsmore Museum, the Amoss House Museum (a circa 1857 antebellum mansion), Newsom’s Old Mill Store (home of the nationally renowned Col. Newsom’s Aged Kentucky Country Ham), the Caldwell County Railroad Museum, Civil War traces, the Cherokee Trail of Tears and a downtown commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Districts.

Muhammad Ali Center Presents: Global Shoes (March 26 - August 4) Global Shoes encourages children and their families to explore global cultures within the context of a fantasy shoe store and factory. The exhibition incorporates intriguing cultural artifacts from the Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s collection and a variety of hands-on, feet-in activities. Global Shoes, a bilingual exhibition, features an interactive shoe store and factory that “manufactures” shoes from around the world. Through try-on, role-play, and investigative activities, visitors explore how shoes are clues to people and places. Global Shoes meets national curriculum standards for social studies, geography, and visual art. During our exhibition of Global Shoes, we are partnering with WaterStep, a Louisville-based non-profit organization that works to save lives from waterborne diseases. WaterStep collects new and gently used shoes to sell in order to fund drinking water projects all over the world — projects that save nearly 400,000 lives each year. In addition to funding drinking water projects, the shoe program provides microbusiness opportunities in poor countries and keeps hundreds of tons of waste out of landfills. For more information, visit www.waterstep.org. Visitors are asked to show their support of WaterStep by bringing in new or gently used shoes through the duration of the Global Shoes Exhibit. Donations are collected by the Visitor Services Staff at the Center. Those who wish to donate will receive a $2 discount on adult or senior admission price. There is no limit on donations, but only one discount will be applied per adult or senior. 401 West River Road Louisville, KY 866.832.0011 502.574.2992 www.belleoflouisville.com Come on along to Louisville, Kentucky, to take a ride on the oldest operating steamboat in the country – the Belle of Louisville. Built in 1914, the Belle is driven by a 19-foot paddlewheel and operates with steam engines that date back to the 1890’s. Originally named the Idlewild, she ran as a ferry and day packet (freight) boat. She was in the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. With the onset of steam engine trains the Idlewild’s business was redirected and she became an excursion boat. As a “tramp” steamer she traveled from town to town offering excursion cruises on America’s inland waterways. In 1948, her name was changed to the Avalon, and over the next 13 years she earned the distinction of most widely-traveled river steamboat in American history. By 1961 her tramping days had taken its toll and she was in such poor condition she was being considered for the scrap yard. Her owners decided to put her up for auction, and the highest bid came from Jefferson County, Kentucky. With little fanfare, and some public skepticism, the Avalon was brought to her new permanent home in Louisville. She was renamed the Belle of Louisville in the fall of 1962, and has taken nearly seven million passengers on steamboat rides. During the summer season you will find the Belle frequently embarking on her two-hour lunch, dinner and sightseeing cruises up the Ohio River. She also has many special events including fireworks cruises, Oktoberfests, Bourbon tastings, and Lock and Dam cruises. Her sister boat, the quaint riverboat Spirit of Jefferson, cruises throughout the summer, fall, and early winter. With both vessels offering Ohio River experiences, there’s always something going on. The Belle is nearing her 100th birthday– a feat not equaled by any other river steamboat in US history! A 5-day celebration with seven other nationally recognized riverboats will be held in her honor on Louisville’s waterfront. This is a celebration you won’t want to miss; October 15-19, 2014. Whatever your plans, call or look online for information on individual and group opportunities. Advanced reservations are required for special events and buffet cruises. Give us a call; we’d love to 24 have you on board!

The Kentucky State Fair is an 11‐day celebration of the history, heritage and culture of the Bluegrass State. More than 600,000 attend America’s largest indoor fair, which uses over 1.2 million square feet of contiguous exhibit space at the Kentucky Exposition Center. While its roots are in agriculture, the Kentucky State Fair has grown into a trade and public education exposition, as well as a major entertainment venue. The World’s Championship Horse Show, held during the Fair, is the world’s richest and most prestigious Saddlebred show. Attendees and exhibitors contribute over $16.8 million annually in economic impact. The Kentucky State Fair & World’s Championship Horse Show are owned and produced by the Kentucky State Fair Board, an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. Special Exhibits this year include: Conveying Progress: The Centennial of the Moving Assembly Line
One hundred years ago, Henry Ford and his engineers made a giant leap forward in industrial progress, launching the world’s first manufacturing assembly line in Highland Park, Michigan. Not only did the moving assembly line revolutionize manufacturing, it played a major role in the establishment of the modern economy and labor organizations, the rise of the middle class and leisure pursuits, and the creation of good roads and suburban neighborhoods in America. This museumquality exhibition uses photographs, artifacts, and period film to explore the 1913 Model T assembly line and the wide-reaching cause and effect relationships that transformed American society. The exhibition also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first Ford Model T factory in Louisville, Kentucky, and offers a contrasting overview of auto manufacturing today. In addition, fairgoers can test their speed, dexterity, and skill with assembly line tools in the exhibition’s simulated factory, open daily. Sponsored by Ford Louisville Assembly & UAW Local 862
War of 1812 Bicentennial and Civil War Sesquicentennial
The commemorative periods for the War of 1812 and American Civil War anniversaries continue in 2013, with two panel exhibitions, “War Hawks & Valiant Volunteers: Kentuckians in the War of 1812” and “United We Stand, Divided We Fall: Kentucky and the Civil War +150.” In addition, living history reenactors will be on hand daily to interpret the lifeways of soldiers in both wars. The popular 30-minute musical production, “Brave Hunters from Kentucky,” returns to the Blue
32
Ribbon Stage, exploring Kentucky’s War of 1812 story through song. In addition, a new 30-minute musical, “Forever Free,” will honor the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Discovery Farm
Discovery Farm offers close-up encounters with cattle, goats, llamas, sheep, horses, poultry, a sow and her litter, and other farm animals. This large exhibition in South Wing B also includes species-specific graphic panels and livestock learning stations, including touch screen computer games. Winning student entries in the Discovery Farm Video & PowerPoint Presentation Contest will be featured; and these multimedia projects will explore life on Kentucky livestock farms, as well as the experiences of Kentucky youth who raise livestock. Discovery Farm is sponsored by Kentucky Pork Producers.

Ashland is proud to boast that they are the only city remaining as host to the wonderful Kentucky Music Trail. The trail was started by former Kentucky Governor Paul Patton in 2002 to boost tourism along the highways that breed country music stars. The state provided funding for the artists for the first few years and the venues included Renfro Valley, the Mountain Arts Center, and the Paramount Arts Center. The artists booked in 2002 were all Kentucky artists and included Boots Randolph; Ricky Skaggs; Crystal Gayle; Exile; Loretta Lynn; Patty Lovelace; John Conlee; and Billy Ray Cyrus. Gov. Patton’s efforts were a blessed economic boost to the three theaters and their respective cities. Ashland, Kentucky is proud of its many family friendly events and festivals. Summer Motion is coming up July 3-7. You won’t want to miss their exciting music and events. Call 606.329.1007 for information or check the website – www.summermotion.com for details. VISITOR Information
Opens steller’s sea-eagle aviary The Louisville Zoo’s new aviary for the Steller’s Sea-Eagles and birds of Far East Russia is a home like no other. Most of us dream of a home with a stream and waterfall, but for the eagles, their new aviary offers both of these luxuries plus other important features tailormade for these very rare and magnificent raptors. The aviary represents the final phase of the Zoo’s award-winning Glacier Run exhibit. Known to have wingspans of up to eight feet, the spectacular Steller’s Sea-Eagles require a vast amount of space to have privacy at their lofty nest which in turn encourages breeding. The Zoo will work hard to breed these rare eagles. The species is vulnerable to extinction with about 4,000 birds in the wild. Steller’s Sea-Eagles are native to Eastern Russia, so the Zoo’s new aviary was styled after a Russian evergreen forest. Here are some of the things guests will see when they step into the aviary: • A pair of Steller’s Sea-Eagles. The male is named Piotr; the female, the larger of the two, is named Anna. They arrived from the San Diego Zoo in December 2012. • The aviary is more than 50 feet tall and features a stream and waterfall • An artificial pine tree extends to the top of the exhibit and features a nest 40 feet above ground plus tree limbs that will encourage the eagles to fly from level-to-level • A nest-cam will allow guests to unobtrusively watch the eagles raise any young that are hatched. • The eagles will have neighbors that are a part of their natural ecosystem including the azure-winged magpie, red-breasted geese and mandarin ducks which will also share the same space . • A thin mesh separates the magpie, geese and ducks from the Eagles but allows the birds to see into the Eagles’ home. Several small openings in the mesh divider also allow them to crossover and explore the Sea-Eagles’ habitat. Inhabitants of the same harsh Far East regions as the Steller’s Sea-eagles, the azure-winged magpie, the mandarin duck and red-breasted geese will live in the same aviary. For more details check out the Zoo’s “Inside the Nest” about how each species acclimated to the exhibit at www.louisvillezoo.org/glacierrun/insidethenest.htm. The new exhibit is open daily now.

PLACES To go Bowling Green
During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.
Burnside The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.
Campbellsville Campbellsville and Taylor County are located in the heart of Central Kentucky. Campbellsville is host to one of the biggest 4th of July celebrations in the state. More than 25,000 people turn out for fireworks, country music concerts, and more. The rural county offers great recreational opportunities, particularly along the Cumberland and Barren Rivers, as well as a sense of hospitality that can only be found in the slower-paced lifestyle of rural Kentucky. While in Monroe County, visit Old Mulkey Meetinghouse State Historic Site, one of the oldest churches in the state (also the site of the Heritage Festival), and Mt. Vernon Church, built by freed slaves before the Civil War. You also may want to sample our famous barbecue, watch a game of “rolley-hole,” a marble game unique to the area, or go hunting of fishing in Monroe’s scenic woodlands and waterways. Mill Springs Mill is on the National Register of Battlefields and is less than a mile of both the West-Metcalfe House and the Brown-Lanier place, as both served as Civil War headquarters and hospitals. Wayne County has two of the finest commercial marinas on the Lake in Beaver Creek and Conley Bottom; both are ready to serve the needs of water enthusiasts and their families. This affords locals and visitors a unique opportunity to experience, explore and enjoy nature first hand!
