NHS NORTH YORKSHIRE ASK PATIENTS TO CONTINUE TO FOLLOW REGULATIONS With more people receiving their Covid-19 vaccinations every day, there’s reason to be optimistic about reduced rates of COVID-19 in our communities. However, NHS North Yorkshire and NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are asking people to continue to follow government guidance closely at each stage of the roadmap, even after their vaccinations. With national restrictions continuing to ease, it is still vitally important we continue to slow the spread of the virus. IF YOU ARE OVER 40 YOU NEED TO READ THIS, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! Do you value your life? It’s a strange question but many of us take it for granted. I would like to tell you a short story. One day a local man from Liverton Mines woke up and decided he needed an eye test. That decision was one of the most important decisions of his life... His vision was fine but he hadn’t had an eye test for a few years. He had seen one of my adverts in the paper and rang to book an appointment. I put him on our Optomap scan and this showed what looked like a tumour inside his eye. He was referred to the hospital and the specialist confirmed it was cancer inside the eye. Thankfully it was seen in time and he got treatment which saved his life.

You may be thinking ‘Opto what’? But Iet me explain... The Optomap is a machine that literally scans your eyes for problems on your retina (the very back of your eyes). Most Opticians these days have a retinal camera but the problem with this is it can only see 15% of the retina! The standard camera is better than nothing but it’s a bit like going to the dentist and the dentist only checking a few of your teeth. The Optomap scan sees nearly 5 times more than the standard camera and over 28 times more than the traditional Opticians’ torch. The torch is still used 20
I am offering the scan half price, so you can get it for just £30 and this will include a full private eye test. Or you can even get it FREE when you join the eye plan, our membership club which gives you glasses at greatly discounted prices and unlimted private eye health checks. ‘NOT FOR ALL THE TEA IN CHINA’ BOOK REVIEW By Peter Cooper
Being a Barnsley lad, and having a brother that left our shores to live in China over 20 years ago now, this book caught my eye when an email dropped into my Inbox a few weeks ago announcing its publication. The author is Chris Burrows, and he declares that he has three great loves in his life: Barnsley FC, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and his wonderful wife. His wife is his rock; Yorkshire CCC his summertime passion and the Super Reds - well they break his heart year after year but he wouldn’t swap them for any other team! As a lad, Chris’s father advised him that the only way to make money was to work for yourself. Well, it took Chris quite a while to follow his Dad’s advice ... 50 years in fact! ’Not For All the Tea in China’ is the story of those 16 years of self-employment, which saw Chris travel across the UK, then to Ireland, Latvia, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, France (where he settled down for a while), Liechtenstein, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Italy, America and, of course, to China. In‘ Not for All the Tea in China’, Chris reminisces about his travels around the world and of the world of business, packing many amusing anecdotes on social traditions, customs and taboos in this 365-page book. Humorous anecdotal stories of his adventures where he saw and experienced so many things he never thought possible are shared, adventures where he met, as he puts it,’some weird and wonderful people in some wonderful and weird places’.
‘Not For All the Tea in China’ is a great read, particularly if you are a Yorkshireman, or simply love travelling and experiencing other cultures. It is written with a typical Yorkshireman sense of humour, a memoir that is honest, true and authentic. Published by Grosvenor House Publishing, Chris’s book is available as a paperback from all good bookshops and online too, priced just £10.99. An eBook version is available too.

FOLKLORE OF BRITISH INSECTS
ASTONISHING FACTS, MYTHS & LEGENDS OF THE CREEPY-CRAWLIES OF GREAT BRITAIN By Chris Firth, with illustrations by Rebecca Hobbs
Ladybirds – Coccinellidae Some facts and folklore
Worldwide, there are over 5000 species of Ladybirds. In Britain there are only 46 species. Of these, 26 are referred to as ‘conspicuous’ – that is, they sport bright markings, usually red and black polka dots, but other colours are available. The remaining species are known as ‘inconspicuous’ – this means that that their colouring is more drab and neutral, but whether colourful or neutral they are equally beautiful. How Ladybirds arrived in Britain
which in time became ‘Lady Beetles,’ and eventually ‘Ladybirds’. They are still much loved across the nation and seen as a symbol of religious faith, loyalty and protection. In the recent past baby clothing was often marked with a tiny picture of a Ladybird. Some Ladybird Folklore If a Ladybird lands on your hands – new gloves are on the way. And you get to make a wish. In the direction it flies away you’ll find your true love. If a Ladybird lands on your head – a new hat! And as it flies away the pretty beetle will take with it any ailments you might have. If you have toothache and cannot afford a dentist simply crush up some Ladybirds and stuff the mash into the cavity. Guaranteed as a cure in days of yore – but do remember that ill luck follows if you kill a Ladybird. In the olden days colic and measles could be cured with a Ladybird potion, although dried, powdered and pipe-smoked Ladybirds are said to provoke nightmares.
In the Middle Ages there was a great travesty On corn, if the number of spots is less than seven the throughout the lands. Huge swarms of biting and harvest will be bountiful. If more than seven, crop chewing insects descended upon the islands and failure and famine are most likely. began to devour everything green in the fields. The crops were threatened - neither smoke nor sprays nor powders nor potions would eradicate the living plague. The people were staring into the face of starvation. There was nothing left to do but pray. Across the land prayers were said to Our Lady, The Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Clouds gathered in the skies and it began to rain, but this was a red rain, the like of which had never been seen before. It was a rain of insects with red shells and black spotted markings. The tiny red and black beetles attacked the crop-destroying insects and devoured them one by one, field by field. The crops were saved, the harvest was brought in, and national starvation was averted. The newcomer, lifesaving insects were named by people as ‘The Beetle of Our Lady’, 36

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

RECOGNISING SIGNS OF PAIN IN OUR PETS
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Our pets are part of our family and as such it is an awful thought to imagine that we may need to evaluate if they are ever in pain. Some pain is of course very obvious to us as pet owners but I would like to make readers more aware of signs that your animal may be in non-obvious pain. It is against the nature of our animals to show signs of weakness and pain so here are a few symptoms to look out for if you are not sure. Pain in cats Reluctance to play / Reduced agility Is your cat reluctant to run upstairs, jump onto a surface or stopped playing with their favourite toy? Limping Does your cat struggle to walk even after periods of rest? Irritability Cats can become irritable and depressed and may avoid being stroked or fussed by their owners. The may hide somewhere and react aggressively to being moved or approached. Grooming Has your pet stopped grooming properly or are they over grooming a particular area? This can be a sign they either can no longer reach an area to groom due to pain or they over groom the area that is causing them pain. Flattening of ears / narrowing of eyes If your cat is showing visual signs of pain on their face but not being vocal this does not mean they are not in pain. Pain in dogs Limping Does your dog suffer from stiffness or limping, especially after lying down or going for long walks? ‘Laziness’ Has your dog stopped wanting to play with his ball or wanting to go for their usual walks? Reduced agility Is your dog finding it harder to get in and out of the car or get up the stairs at home, or even just getting up from rest? Grumpiness Has your dog become less tolerant of attention or maybe a little snappy around other pets that want to play? 68
Detachment Some dogs can appear to become distant or aloof from their family when they are in pain or stressed. Clingy Some dogs will need more attention reassurance when in pain or feeling anxious.
and
