A Warm Welcome
When I visited Whitby for the first time many years ago, it was a bustling fishing port; nowadays the town has transformed into a popular tourist destination where visitors from all over the UK and indeed the world flock for its long sandy beaches, picturesque harbour, fish and chips, and of course its connection with Dracula and the goth culture.
I am usually out and about early in the day, as I love to see the town wake up and the streets begin to come alive and fill with a buzz of excitement. Market stall owners setting up and arranging their merchandise, staff of pubs and restaurants polishing their outside tables & chairs and watering their plants, and the wonderful bin lorry crews and street sweepers keeping our streets spic and span. The sound of people greeting each other and making small talk mixed with seagulls screeching overhead and the distant sound of the sea. Bakers and coffee shops opening their doors, enticing customers with the smell of freshly made pastries and coffee, and naturally I give in to the temptation ... who wouldn’t? Once inside and my order placed, I sit down and watch the world go by for a while, then pull out my laptop, answer some emails and plan my day...
Today though is different - it is press day and lots to do. A full day in the home office working with the team and making sure that the magazine is ready to upload to the printers. Last-minute adverts, changes to adverts and proofreading amends – it can get rather hectic! But we always make the press deadline and breathe a huge sigh of relief! I hope you enjoy our magazine this month and find something
interest to you. If you are a business and are wanting to advertise, we do have space available in our coming editions - why not get in touch and join me for a coffee and cake one morning in one of our many lovely coffee shops, and together we can discuss your ideas?

THE MAYFIELD CARE HOME CELEBRATE THE CORONATION IN STYLE!
We had a wonderful day celebrating King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation at The Mayfield Care Home. There had been a huge amount of preparation for the event with lots of bunting, balloons and lanterns made and put up by our team and residents, and delicious food prepared. Our residents, their families and members of our team watched the ceremony which was being shown on our TVs. We were all transfixed by the magical occasion and the huge sense of history being made. There was a lot of conversation about where our residents watched the last coronation with several being huddled around small black and white TVs in a variety of places!
Towards the end of the event our very talented Senior Carer Adam got his guitar out and played a couple of country songs which everyone enjoyed! Many thanks to everyone who came along and to the whole of our brilliant team who worked extremely hard preparing for the event, and on the day looking after everyone so well. It was a joy to have so many people at The Mayfield for such a special occasion, and to see and meet so many friends and family.
The Mayfield Care Home in Whitby is now open and accepting bookings from new residents for shortand long-term stays. We have a stunning new luxury care home and an exceptional team providing exceptional residential and dementia care for our residents. Call our team today on 01947 280 884 to see how we can help.
After the service, many more friends and family arrived, including several of our team members with their families which was lovely. We then enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, freshly prepared by our Kitchen Team. Highlights of the meal were the coronation chicken sandwiches, roasted honey sausages, bruschetta, and the stunning coronation cake, which was all washed down with Prosecco and Pimm’s!

TELL THE TEACHER WE’RE SURFING... THE ORIGINS OF BEACH WATER SPORTS
Surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking all have unique origins, and each activity has become popular for different reasons.
Surfing is believed to have originated in ancient Polynesia, where it was known as he’e nalu. The sport was first documented by European explorers in the 18th century, and it began to spread throughout the world in the early 20th century. Today, surfing is a popular sport and cultural phenomenon that has gained a massive following worldwide.
Paddleboarding has its roots in ancient Hawaiian culture, where it was known as Hoe he’e nalu. In the early 20th century, Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic swimmer and Hawaiian legend, popularised the sport by using a longboard to paddle out to sea. Since then, the sport has evolved, and paddleboarding has become a popular activity for fitness, relaxation, and adventure.
Kayaking, on the other hand, has its roots in the Arctic, where indigenous peoples used kayaks for hunting and transportation. The modern kayak was developed in the 19th century, and today, it is used for recreational purposes as well as for fishing, whitewater rafting, and touring.
In recent years, these activities have all become increasingly popular. Surfing, in particular, has seen a surge in popularity, with the sport’s inclusion in the Olympics and the emergence of professional surfing competitions. Paddleboarding and kayaking have also become popular activities, with people using them for fitness, adventure, and relaxation. The rise of social media has also helped to popularise these activities, with people
sharing their experiences and inspiring others to try them out. Overall, surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking have become beloved pastimes that offer a unique way to experience the beauty and power of our seas and ocean.
Where to surf?
Whitby has become popular for surfing in recent years. There are also other popular surfing beaches within a 20-mile radius of Whitby:
Saltburn Beach: Located about 16 miles north of Whitby, Saltburn Beach is a popular surfing spot on the North Yorkshire coast. It has consistent surf breaks and is suitable for surfers of all levels.
Sandsend Beach: Just 3 miles north of Whitby, Sandsend Beach is a popular surfing spot with locals. It has a pebble beach and a range of surf breaks that are suitable for both beginner and experienced surfers.
Scarborough North Bay: Located about 20 miles south of Whitby, Scarborough North Bay is a popular surfing spot with a long sandy beach and consistent surf breaks. It can get crowded during peak surfing season.
Cayton Bay: Approximately 24 miles south of Whitby, Cayton Bay is a popular surfing spot with a beach break that’s suitable for intermediate and experienced surfers. It can get crowded during peak surfing season.
Robin Hood’s Bay: Located about 6 miles south of Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay is a small cove that can offer some surfable waves during the right conditions. It’s not a consistent surf spot, but it can be a fun place to surf on occasion.
It’s worth noting that the surf conditions in this part of the UK can be quite unpredictable and often require specific wind and tide conditions to be good. It’s a good idea to check the surf forecast before heading out, and to be aware of any potential hazards, such as rips or rocks. Always prioritise safety and respect the sea.

NORTH YORKSHIRE IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR A NATURE-BASED BREAK!
North Yorkshire offers a plethora of nature-based holiday options for you to enjoy. Here are some activities and destinations you might consider:
Explore the North York Moors National Park: This expansive park offers breathtaking landscapes, including heather-covered moorland, ancient woodlands, and charming villages. You can go hiking, cycling, or horseback riding on the numerous trails, visit the iconic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, or take a scenic steam train ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Discover the coastal beauty: North Yorkshire boasts stunning coastal areas, such as Whitby, Scarborough, and Robin Hood’s Bay. Take leisurely walks along the beaches, explore the dramatic cliffs and rock formations, and indulge in fresh seafood. Whitby Abbey, perched on a headland, offers fantastic views of the town and coastline.
Take a trip to the historic city of York: While not strictly a nature-based destination, York combines rich history with beautiful green spaces. Explore the ancient city walls, visit the York Museum Gardens, stroll along the River Ouse, and take a boat trip to enjoy the city’s charm alongside its natural elements. Hiking and Trekking: Plan a hiking or trekking trip in scenic locations. Popular trails include the Cleveland Way, Lyke Wake Walk, and Roseberry Topping.
Coastal Getaways: Explore coastal areas with stunning natural landscapes. Consider destinations such as Robin Hood’s Bay, a charming coastal village located just a few miles south of Whitby. Robin Hood’s Bay offers stunning views and a network of coastal paths. You can hike along the Cleveland Way, which passes through the village and provides breathtaking vistas of the rugged coastline. Staithes and Runswick Bay are also great options. These quaint fishing villages are located north of Whitby and offer scenic hiking opportunities.
Eco-lodges and Retreats: Stay at eco-lodges or ecofriendly resorts that offer immersive experiences in nature. These accommodations often emphasise sustainability and provide access to outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, or wildlife observation. One such place is Serenity Camping at Hinderwell which offers a more rustic and eco-friendly camping
experience, including glamping pods and traditional camping pitches. The site promotes sustainable practices and provides amenities such as compost toilets and recycling facilities. There are lots of similar sites and only a google search away!
Camping and Glamping: Plan a camping trip to enjoy the beauty of nature up close. Alternatively, if you prefer more comfort, consider “glamping” (glamorous camping) options that provide luxurious tents or cabins in scenic locations.
Nature Photography: If you have an interest in photography, choose a destination renowned for its picturesque landscapes and wildlife. This way, you can capture stunning images while enjoying the natural surroundings.
Nature Retreats and Meditation: Opt for a nature retreat or meditation centre nestled in serene natural settings. These retreats offer an opportunity to disconnect from the busy world and connect with nature while rejuvenating your mind and body. The Tree Relaxation Retreat located just outside the village of Rosedale Abbeyprovides a peaceful environment surrounded by woodland and scenic beauty. They offer various retreats and meditation programs, including mindfulness, yoga, and relaxation sessions.

A Good Read
The Rebel Christ
by Michael CorenThe starting point for this book by Michael Coren is a question, based on a claim. Why is it that the purist, most supremely liberating, philosophy and theology in all of history is now seen by so many people around the world as an intolerant, legalistic, andevenirrelevant, religion embraced only by the gullible, the foolish, and the judgemental?
Michael writes ‘If that shocks you, so be it. That’s a good and not a bad thing, and the truth is often shocking. I pose this question because it’s real, and it’s proven, and unless Christians admit the problem and struggle to remedy it, matters will only deteriorate.'
Michael Coren is a British Canadian broadcaster, journalist and Anglican priest, and the author of 18 books including biographies of C S Lewis, G K Chesterton, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Tolkien. He retains many links with his native Britain, visiting often and writing for the New Statesman.
The Girl Who Drank the Moon
by Kelly BarnhillThe Girl Who Drank the Moon is a captivating and enchanting Newbery Medalwinning novel. Set in a world of magic and wonder, it tells the story of Luna, a young girl unknowingly filled with powerful magic after being fed moonlight by the good witch Xan. The novel follows Luna, Xan, a wise swamp monster named Glerk, and a tiny, talkative dragon called Fyrian as they navigate the complexities of Luna's magical abilities and unravel the mysteries surrounding their world.
Once the darling of conservative Catholicism and evangelicalism, Coren had what he terms as a profound conversion and began embracing the issues he had previously judged. His outspokenness cost him his lucrative broadcasting career and made him the target of vitriol, but he found freedom in the radical and progressive nature of the gospel and is today its champion. In ‘The Rebel Christ’ he explores what Jesus said about the pressing issues of his and our day. Jesus may not have mentioned sexuality, but welcomed outsiders and the marginalized; he never spoke of social security systems, but did criticise the wealthy and complacent and called for the poor to be protected; he didn’t side with the powerful but did condemn those who judged and exploited others and turned their eyes away from those in need and from the cry for justice. This was Christ the rebel, Christ the radical, who turned the world upside down and demands that his followers do the same today.
Barnhill's lyrical prose and vivid world-building draws readers into the story, and the characters are both endearing and complex. The book is a delightful blend of fantasy, adventure, and comingof-age, with a touch of darkness that lends depth to the narrative. It explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the power of knowledge, providing valuable lessons for both young and adult readers. The plot is intricately woven, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged throughout.
The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a beautifully written, heart-warming tale that effortlessly blends fantasy and reality. It will captivate readers of all ages, leaving them with a sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the magic in their own lives.

Prize Competition
Spot the Ball with Whitby Town FC
Win two tickets to watch Whitby Town Football Club at The Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull Ground.
The Whitby Advertiser and Whitby Town Football Club have teamed up to give the Whitby Advertiser readers a brand new competition - Spot the Ball!
You may remember the popular competitions from the 1970s and 1980s ran by national and local magazines and newspapers where the reader would try and pin point the location of a football on a picture of a recent football match.
Our Spot the Ball competition is a little bit different and carries on the theme from our 'Find the flag' competition. Rather than spot the ball on a single picture, we are asking our readers if they can locate the Whitby Town football which is hidden away somewhere on one of the pages of this month's magazine.
For a chance of winning two tickets to see Whitby Town in action at The Towbar Express Stadium at the Turnbull ground, simply find the hidden ball!
How to enter
To enter the prize draw please email the page number where you have found the hidden football, with your name, address & telephone number to : competitions@whitbyadvertiser.co.uk. Alternatively you can post your answer to: Whitby Advertiser, PO Box 120, Whitby, YO21 3ED. Please note, we only accept one entry per household
The winner will be announced in the next issue and contacted by ourselves with details on how to collect their tickets.

YORKSHIRE LOFT
LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
