EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster
I was recently asked what I do for my fitness, and in a fly away comment I replied that I was a bit of a ‘fitness tart’. It was a joking response but when I got to thinking about it, there was an element of truth to the comment. Now socially, being a tart is not a desirable quality for a single lady, however, when it comes to fitness I am going to make a stand and say everyone should become one… a ‘fitness tart’ that is – even the guys! In the past month alone, I have visited my gym almost every day, been for many runs, done some CrossFit, took on an extreme obstacle course, tried my hand at TRX, spent time with a nutritionist, got some pointers with some kettle bells, had fun at the Color Run with my kids, trained in the park with a friend, did group boxing with a bunch of awesome chicks, had my butt kicked by my bestie, had a personal training session, checked my progress with some fitness testing, discussed supplements with a world body sculpting champion and my absolute favourite, spent four days with Steve Willis at his CommandoFit Bootcamp (did you see the cover?! Oh and read all about it on page 10).
Things don’t have to change the world to be important. Steve Jobs
So why am I making a stand for everyone to channel their inner fitness tart? Because mixing things up, trying something new and meeting new people is the fast track to making fitness fun. Yes, FUN! Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and this could not be truer when it comes to getting active. No one eats the same food every day, so why would you go to the same gym, do the same class on the same day, do the same exercises and then wonder why you’re not seeing results and are bored to death! OK, you may not become an extreme fitness tart like me, but here is my challenge to you over the next month. Try at least one new way to exercise that you have not done before. To make it really fun, take a friend with you. If you do, share what you have discovered on the Why Fitness Magazine Facebook wall and tag the fitness business too. Can’t wait to hear about it! This issue is all about ‘gadgets and gizmos’. We have found some amazing new fitness gadgets, fitness apps and some time-saving gizmos for the kitchen. Hightech and simplistically basic, this issue is full of great ideas that you can use.

Top Ten Fitness Gadgets and Gizmos That Really Work BY HENRY HOUND IN THE FITNESS WORLD THERE IS NEVER A SHORTAGE OF GADGETS AND GIZMOS THAT CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS OR FITNESS GOALS. THE PROBLEM IS SEPARATING THE REALLY GOOD AND HELPFUL ONES, FROM THE ONES THAT WIND UP GATHERING DUST UNDER YOUR BED. SHAKE WEIGHT ANYBODY? SO HERE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER ARE TEN ‘HEALTH HOUND’ APPROVED FITNESS GADGETS AND GIZMOS, MOST CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AND SOME ON THE HORIZON, THAT REALLY DO WHAT THEY CLAIM.
1. HEALTH AND HEART RATE MONITORS One of the biggest rages in fitness technology over the past year or so has been fitness monitors such as the Jawbone UP bracelet and the Fitbit. These are more than merely pedometers. Rather, they’re lifestyle and activity monitors that can keep track of everything from the foods you eat, the exercises you do, even the amount of sleep you have. One of the latest is the AIRO wristband that adds detecting your stress levels into the mix. The AIRO charts your level of stress as high, medium or low, based on your heart rate. If the little wrist gadget thinks you’re a bit too stressed out, it will vibrate to tell you to calm down. It will even suggest you do a few deep breathing exercises if it thinks you need to! The AIRO Wristband is not available yet, but you can preorder at www.getairo.com.
2. THE MotoACTV The MotoACTV is another spin on the wearable monitor, but this little square device combines the best of a fitness monitor and an MP3 player. The MotoACTV allows you to not only save and play your favorite tunes while tracking the results of your workout, you can also send text messages and check for the latest weather forecast. 6 ISSUE 7
The MotoACTV can be found on Amazon.com, or ordered direct from the Manufacturer at www.motoactv.com/home/page/buy
3. UNDER ARMOUR E39 For the more serious athlete or professional trainer, there is what I consider the ultimate in monitoring device technology: the Under Armour E39. You will not only look like a superhero wearing it, you will likely feel like Iron Man. The E39 is equipped with a special sensor pack that holds a triaxial accelerometer, microprocessor, 2GB of storage, and other bio-sensors’ that measure things like heart rate, breathing, speed and performance. It connects wirelessly to any smartphone, tablet, or computer, and much like Tony Stark’s JARVIS, will give you a steady stream of detailed data on how well your body is performing during any type of exercise, or acts of derring-do. At press time the E39 Shirt with the interwoven bio-metric monitor is only available to professional athletes and not the general public, but the monitor belt itself is available at www. underarmour.com/shop/us/en/armour39
4. THE MOVE BY ELECTRIC FOXY If you think wearable monitors are only for hardcore strength training workouts, think again. If yoga, Tai-chi or Pilates
style exercises are more your thing, The Move by Electric Foxy is for you. It is basically a shirt that has been outfitted with ‘stretch sensors’ that can read your muscle movements from your shoulders to your back and keep track of your body’s position during exercise. It provides ever so slight vibrations to tell you if your posture or balance is off. Find out when and where The Move will be available by visiting www.electricfoxy.com/projects/ move-precision-in-movement/
5. XBOX KINECT Who says all video games are bad for you, and that workouts at home can’t be fun? The Xbox with the Kinect Bundle is not your couch potato’s video game system! There are dozens of games, and more arriving almost daily for the Xbox Kinect 360 that are fun ways to burn calories such as Your Shape, EA SPORTS Active 2, and The Hound’s personal favorite (or my daughter’s at least) Dance Central. Find out all you need to know about the Xbox Kinect by visiting www.xbox.com/en-AU/Kinect
6. HAND X BANDS OK, you have probably noticed a pattern here, and before you think all the best fitness gizmos have to be high-tech and super expensive, they don’t. You are
feature probably familiar with the typical spring hand squeezers to build grip strength. Grip strength is important in just about any sport or physical activity. But the typical squeezers only work adduction, on the closing of your hand. To really improve grip strength, you have to work your hands abductors as well, or the muscles that open the hand. That is just what these little elastic babies that attach to your fingertips do. The Hand X Bands are available on www.amazon.com. Keyword HandX-Band, or order direct from the manufacturer at www.handxband.com
7. POWERBALL WRIST TRAINER This is another non-electronic workout gadget that is fun, addictive, works to build forearm strength, and doesn’t even need batteries. It works through a combination of an internal gyroscope with centrifugal force, building up speed as you get the ball turning, with a top speed of up to 15,000 rpms, which exerts some real power-building force on your wrists and forearms.
The Powerball can be ordered direct from the manufacturer at www.powerballs.com
8. THE WIFI BODY SCALE FROM WITHINGS Usually when trying to lose weight and get in shape, your scale is rarely your best friend. Not so with the WiFi Body Scale from Withings. This scale recognises you and anyone in your household as soon as you step on it. It gives you your weight and your BMI, and instantly sends the info to your smartphone or personal website so you can track your progress. It even sends out encouraging and inspirational tweets to your friends and family as you reach your weight loss goals! The WiFi Body Scale can be purchased by visiting their website at www.withings.com
9. THE MANDOMETER This is another ‘friendly’ device and a methodology that has been proven to aid in weight loss. Studies have shown it is particularly helpful in helping teens
with eating disorders. Basically it turns your dinner plate into a ‘smart plate’ and helps you adjust your portions to proper size. It will also measure the rate at which you consume food, and help to train you in more mindful eating habits. Find out much more about the Mandometer Method at www.mandometer.com.au
10. THE TREADMILL BIKE I really love this one. Everyone knows that running on a treadmill is a great way to burn calories and get in shape, but let’s face it, it makes you feel as if you are stuck on a treadmill and going nowhere! The fitness geniuses at Bicycle Forest have changed all that with the Treadmill Bike. You guessed it, the product combines a treadmill with a bicycle, so as you run, you can actually get somewhere other than your fitness goals! As of now the Treadmill Bike is only available as a custom order from Bicycle Forest at www.bikeforest.com/tread. www.healthhound.org

FITNESS MAGIC
During
with Vickie Magic Before
Vickie Magic, Jen Forster, Cathy Singleton
You may not realise the journey I have been on over the last few years, so I thought I would show you a few ‘before and during’ photos (can’t really say ‘after’ yet) as I am still on the journey. Sometimes we forget (OK sometimes I forget) that I have actually come quite far to get here. I look at pictures of myself or look in the mirror and sometimes I get sad that I am STILL OVERWEIGHT, STILL FAT. I wonder if losing 25 kilos is actually enough, if I am enough, just as I am and if I should just give up now because I am tired, frustrated, sick of having to work so hard and it seems to take so long. Is it all worth it? Can I keep going, or should I just be happy with where I am? I do wonder sometimes what people think of an

overweight 53 year old woman being the publisher of Why Fitness, then I quickly remind myself that ‘what people think of me is NONE of my business’. I point out to myself that it is actually because I AM ENOUGH, because WE ALL ARE ENOUGH, that we owe it to ourselves, to our families, to our loved ones to look after ourselves and that being unfit and overweight is NOT that. Feeding ourselves rubbish is like putting the wrong petrol in the car and expecting it to continue to run smoothly and not understanding why it keeps breaking down. I realise that because I am enough, because we are enough, we need to feed our bodies with good food with the right food (the right petrol) and that we need to move to stay healthy.
I now realise that this is NOT ABOUT HOW I LOOK WHATSOEVER; this is all about how I feel and how my body feels. I am actually glad that it is taking a long time, because every time in the past I have dieted and lost weight, I have always, always found it again. This time, that is NOT happening. This time is forever.

The Commando!
FIVE in 5
Steve Willis – The man behind the dark sunglasses VICKIE MAGIC AND JEN FORSTER FROM WHY FITNESS MAGAZINE RECENTLY SPENT FOUR DAYS AT BINNA BURRA LODGE IN THE BEAUTIFUL GOLD COAST HINTERLAND, TAKING PART IN THE MUCH TALKED ABOUT COMMANDOFIT BOOTCAMP HOSTED BY STEVE WILLIS, ALSO KNOWN AS ‘THE COMMANDO’. VICKIE AND JEN HAVE EACH SHARED THEIR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF THE FOUR DAYS IN THIS STORY. THEY ALSO SPENT TIME WITH STEVE TO ASK HIM THE FAMOUS WHY FITNESS ‘FIVE QUESTIONS IN FIVE MINUTES’. FOR THE FULL EXPERIENCE, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH THE INTERVIEW BY SCANNING THE QR CODE ON THIS PAGE. WE THINK YOU MIGHT BE AS SURPRISED AS WE WERE TO MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE INFAMOUS DARK SUNGLASSES.
1. SHARE WITH US, WHAT WOULD YOU BE FAMOUS FOR TO OUR READERS? My black sunglasses and the phrase ‘No excuses!’ I’m probably better known as the ‘no excuses’ trainer who takes care of the contestants on television’s The Biggest Loser. 2. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY?
I’ve been interested in fitness my whole life; it’s something that I’ve always been drawn to. I joined the military when I was 18, and spent ten years there. And transitioning out of the army I wanted to help people achieve the level of fitness I had. I was introduced to CrossFit and at the same time I was fortunate enough to land the role on The Biggest Loser. 3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU ‘GROW UP’? WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? Superman! Because he is cool. He can do anything! He can fly and lift heavy things... although I’ve never worn my jocks on the outside, though who knows, maybe one day! 4. WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT BEING ‘THE COMMANDO’? I don’t get a lot of time off but training is an outlet for me. It helps me to destress. I have three beautiful kids who I love spending time with. I like to get out in the wild, lie on the beach, take a holiday and just chill out – I really am a regular person like everyone else. It’s important to me to stay grounded, and the Army has definitely helped with that. It also plays a big part in how I connect to people.
I wanted to be a builder. It was in my family history. Apprenticeships were hard to come by so I joined the Army. The Army taught me a lot but I knew there was more to life than that. Whether I was in the Army or not, it was going to continue to roll along, and I knew for me that I wanted to change people’s lives. I am now helping them to reconstruct so I am actually getting to be that ‘builder’ but in a different way. BONUS Questions! THIS ISSUE IS ALL ABOUT GADGETS AND GIZMOS. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE GADGET OR GIZMO? My phone, for communication but also for my music and apps that I love. I have a couple of apps that I use for measuring distance, as well as interval timers which are fantastic for circuits. If I could choose one piece of fitness equipment, I’d probably choose my skipping rope. It’s compact, easy to travel with and you can get a fantastic workout. WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU WOULD SHARE WITH SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO IMPROVE THEIR FITNESS AND WAS THINKING ABOUT COMING TO YOUR COMMANDOFIT BOOTCAMP?
5. WHAT’S YOUR ‘WHY’? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
It’s all about the mindset - drawing the line in the sand and deciding that you are either in or you are out. Make the choice and hopefully you’re in. Second is nutrition, and third is your training. Be consistent with both of these. And if you have made the choice to be in, it won’t be a problem to commit to the consistency.
I work hard and I like to help people change their lives. I have a level of fitness that is fantastic but there is no point having that and not sharing it with other people. When I was younger

VICKIE MAGIC’S COMMANDOFIT EXPERIENCE A few weeks ago I was in the car with Jen Forster and Mel Bingley travelling to Binna Burra on the Gold Coast. We were all booked in for the three day Commandofit Bootcamp with TV personality Steve ‘Commando’ Willis. Being an overweight and (not so fit) 53 year old attending bootcamp with two super fit, super trim girlfriends, well to say I was a little apprehensive - could quite possibly be an understatement! I really had no idea what to expect. I’ve watched the TV program Biggest Loser once or twice, but to be honest I wasn’t a massive fan. I couldn’t really see how locking people up and giving them almost no food and making them exercise fifty million hours a day was going to help anyone to change their life long term. Didn’t really seem like reality to me. On the first day and within no time, I could see that this program wasn’t going to be easy. Of course I knew that, so no surprises there. It was a challenging day although I can’t give away any of what we did. But I can tell you that most importantly I was happy when the day ended. By lunch time on the second day, I decided I would have to go home. I had discovered I don’t like being out of my comfort zone; who knew huh? By the end of the third day I was in love with the adventure and by the fourth day I didn’t want to leave! Would I do it again? Was it worth the money? Did it make a difference? Would I recommend it? Can overweight people do it? Is it suitable for all types of fitness levels? Is Steve ‘Commando’ Willis really the hard core militant that he appears to be on show? YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES AND NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT! YES – I absolutely would do this again! In fact, I can’t wait to do it all over again next year, when I am slimmer, fitter and stronger.
12 ISSUE 7
YES – Honestly the investment was totally worth every last cent. YES – Attending the bootcamp has already made a massive difference in my day to day life. This experience showed me just how strong I am and just how resilient I am, both mentally and physically. In the past when I thought I was giving it my all and I believed that I was doing my absolute best... well now I see, I HAD NO IDEA! I am so much more capable of being so much stronger, and you know what? Up till now I never realised I had so much more inside me. I hadn’t actually been pushing myself to my full 100 per cent!
people were actually not as fit as some of the larger ones. Just goes to show that weight and fitness don’t ALWAYS go hand in hand.
ABSOLUTELY NOT - Biggest Loser is a TV series and Commando Steve plays a role, although I have heard many people, mainly women, rave on about him. To be honest I never really got it, as he certainly didn’t do anything for me. After I met Steve and spent time getting to know him over the weekend, I can honestly say he is one of the most humble, honest, refreshing, intelligent and gorgeous people I have ever met. For example, we three girls had just finished yoga and were chilling out in the lounge room. He walked by and decided to plonk himself down YES - I would happily recommend the on the floor in front of us. We spent ages CommandoFit Bootcamp to people of chatting together, just casually, honest and any fitness level and especially those raw. I absolutely loved that about him; I have who work in the fitness industry or as a never thought anyone was better than anyone personal trainer. The learning technique else, but sometimes TV personalities have was really beneficial and in particular the this ‘I am better than you’ thing happening. specific way Steve taught the techniques. Steve Willis has none of that. He is a genuine By simply breaking the fitness tasks person who is caring, passionate, awesome into small steps, it made it so much at what he does, and looking to make a easier to remember everything, and this difference in the world - looking to empower means you put more into each exercise people to see that they are strong, that their and therefore get better results, YAY! health is important and they are worth it. YES – There was actually a number of And yes… now I also agree he is overweight people there. I was quite not bad on the eyes, either! surprised; I thought I might be the only one, so finding out I wasn’t made me feel a little more comfortable. YES – Fitness is something you have to work on no matter what size you are. I found it interesting that some of the slim
JEN FORSTER’S COMMANDOFIT EXPERIENCE Driving almost three hours from the Sunshine Coast to Binna Burra Lodge in the Gold Coast hinterland, there was an energetic kind of conversation going on between Vickie and me that had us surmising all sorts of scenarios of what lay ahead of us, because we simply did not know what was going to happen. Apart from a very basic ‘things to bring’ list, we knew absolutely nothing else about the CommandoFit Bootcamp, except that a friend of a friend, just two days earlier, had informed us that it was harder than the Kokoda Trek. This person had done both. So with a backpack full of the things we had been told to bring, the unnerving knowledge from a friend of a friend and our overactive imaginations, one thought we had was that we may be made to sleep outdoors with all of our belongings confiscated. Another thought was that he would be bent over screaming at us as we crawled on all fours, up steep hills. We also thought that we may not be given enough food, only rations. One of my ‘things’ is that I
hate being told what to do. I even imagined that I could get caught up in a full blown argument with him. It’s funny how the human mind works. What I discovered is that as humans, we really do prefer an itinerary, and we like it to be as detailed as possible. We like to know what’s coming and when we don’t, we make stuff up. Just as we were doing on the car trip. Fortunately none of those things happened. Now, I am not saying it was a five star, luxurious health retreat. It was not. It was without doubt, one of the toughest, enjoyable, gruelling, fun, exhausting, exhilarating, challenging and informative fitness experiences I have ever had with 24 of the most diverse and amazing people I have ever met. Each one, I have no doubt, would have a different story to share. And here’s mine. What I discovered is that no matter how fit I am, there is always someone much fitter and always someone not as fit. If you put all three of us side by side and ask us to run 800m up a hill and back, carrying a 20kg sandbag and repeat this many times, someone is going to finish first and someone is going to finish last. But regardless
of where each of these people finish, there is absolutely no difference in the level of total exhaustion each person experiences. If you are giving it all you’ve got, regardless of how fit you are, it’s going to hurt. It does not get easier as you become fitter. Sorry if I’ve burst anyone’s bubble here. Getting uncomfortable is a short term experience that is often followed by a tremendous sense of achievement. This is not reserved only for the fittest people. What was the greatest learning for me though, is that this is also true across most areas of life. In business, in relationships, school, careers, family… none of us is the ‘most fit’ and none of us is the ‘most unfit’. We are all somewhere on that imaginary line with people ahead of us and people behind us. Comparing ourselves with others is the greatest inhibitor of success that I know. What I do know for certain is that no matter where you are in life, giving it your all and knowing at the end of the day you put it all on the line, is where the sweetest success will be found. Pain is temporary but bragging rights are forever.
GETTING UNCOMFORTABLE IS A SHORT TERM EXPERIENCE THAT IS OFTEN FOLLOWED BY A TREMENDOUS SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT.

MINUTES WITH...
KRIS STUMER, GET STRAIGHT, GET STRONG
by Vanessa Webster There are many gadgets and gizmos available in the fitness industry these days. It seems harder to know exactly what does what? Kris Stumer loves his fitness tools and is a man with a passion for helping people to discover their own. Why? At 28 years of age, originally from Ipswich, Kris has lived on the Sunshine Coast for the last two years. Fitness has always been important to Kris; he has enjoyed playing semi-professional soccer as a goal keeper for 20 years, and more recently with the Buderim Wanderers. This year Kris has taken the season off to focus on his business. Kris was introduced to fitness through soccer early in his life. This type of training was about conditioning, speed, agility and not so much about being big and bulky. “It’s what I knew. It’s much more engaging and you feel an instant outcome”. Kris started to get bored with running around his local neighbourhood, so joined the local health club. He was never really comfortable with the gym environment, where men seem to aspire to a bronzed sculptured, terminator style physique. Kris says “I never thought that would be me”. Kris was then drawn to the performance side of things; that’s what he loved. He also wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, so he became a trainer. “I was always thinking, ‘how can I help make people better? Better in the way they feel. Better in the way they hold themselves’. I much prefer to see people after a session holding their head up smiling, with a spark, rather than feeling sick and defeated” says Kris. Since the beginning of September Kris has been working along side David Hendrey at Hendrey Chiropractic, located on Innovation Parkway, Lake Kawana. Kris helps his clients by focusing, strengthening and resistance training techniques, utilising the fitness tool called TRX. When Kris was first introduced to TRX he was totally blown away! Kris says, “It was a totally new concept – before that, my introduction to gym environments was either using weights or machines – or doing cardio.” Kris completed the three day TRX course and discovered just how variable and adaptable TRX is for each person. “It was a real lightning bolt moment and from that day on – I’ve never been able to distance myself 14 ISSUE 7
SCAN HERE TO VIEW CHRIS AT WORK from TRX, it was love at first sight. It’s like the swiss army knife of training tools”, laughs Kris. Whether you are 17 or 70 years of age, Kris can create a program to suit you. In this issue, on the topic of gadgets and gizmos Kris shares with us his two other favourite tools. “I love a TRX tool called the rip trainer; this in particular is more based around producing rotation and power, and does what TRX doesn’t.” says Kris. Another tool Kris loves to introduce his clients to is called the ViPR - one of the hottest functional fitness tool in the world today. We asked Kris to share with our readers his ‘WHY?’ Kris says, “I love seeing change in people, not just on a physical level, but that mental change.” The most important thing to Kris is that people leave feeling better. Not just in your own skin, but also in your head space as well. “I like to really talk to that person and ask them why? Why are you here? Why do you want to do this? This is actually a lot harder than you think. A lot of people won’t tell you exactly what they want, as they don’t know – so to get them to that point where I can say, ‘This is what I can change for you and this is how we are going to do it’ – that’s why I do what I do!”

WHY SUNSHINE TOYOTA with Rob Cross Scan here to watch the review on the new 2014 Prado
When Rob first walked into Sunshine Toyota as a service customer wearing red hibiscus shorts and shirt on the 2012 Day for Daniel, he was unwittingly also dressed in the company’s branding. He was so impressed with the service, state of the art premises and the exceptional staff friendliness he decided he wanted to be a part of the Sunshine vibe. Within weeks he quit his job in Brisbane to take on the role of Fleet Consultant at Sunshine Toyota. “My wife and I originally came to Australia in 2005 on holiday. We were scheduled to spend no more than two days in any one spot but we overstayed on the Sunshine Coast. We fell in love with it and moved here. The Sunshine Coast lifestyle encapsulates everything that represents Australia to us. Sunshine Toyota has the same feel for both customer and employee – clean, fresh, friendly, fit and fun. Our Toyota vehicle of choice is a LandCruiser Prado. It is a perfect family vehicle with seating for the whole family, friends and overseas visitors. The off-road capability suits our active
lifestyle and it has the capacity to carry all our toys. Having previously owned a Prado and gone to another manufacturer for a year, we returned to the Toyota Prado due to its reliability, durability and low cost of ownership. We lead an active lifestyle having taken part in Tough Mudder, Sunshine Coast Half Marathon, Xtreme OCR and corporate dragon boat racing. The team at Sunshine Toyota have also taken part in some of these events, all sharing the same outlook in their coast lifestyle. Sunshine Toyota staff even had a part in the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast as volunteers for 2013 and we hope to secure some competitor places for next year. Living the Australian dream!

LOCAL SUCCESS DAVID CHICK FROM ALLEZ SPORT
‘ALLEZ’ – French for GO! Why Fitness Magazine recently caught up with David Chick, owner and founder of Allez Sport in Mooloolaba. The first thing we wanted to know was what does ‘Allez’ (pronounced al – ay) mean? David tells us it’s French for Go! “We didn’t have too many names on the short list but we knew that we didn’t want to go with anything traditional or mainstream. During the Tour De France, this word is yelled repeatedly to the riders. We asked a few friends and the consensus was positive, so we went with it” says David. Allez Sport was established in 2005 when David’s wife, who is a teacher, was transferred to the Sunshine Coast. David, who owned a successful timber blind and shutter business in Brisbane, already had a personal passion for triathlon. Before arriving on the Coast David and a friend (who imported some sporting brands) would head to the Noosa Tri and sell their products. So when his wife had work and he, at the time, did not, it seemed a natural thing to turn his passion for triathlon into a business. And thus, Allez Sport was born. One of the things David is committed to, is supporting community events in the way of sponsorship. Allez Sports year after year, sponsors the Mooloolaba and Noosa Triathlon, as well as the Sunshine Coast Marathon and this year the inaugural 70.3 Ironman, as well as other smaller local events. David was also the creator of the Sunshine Coast Run Series which is today combined with the Pt Cartwright Run Series to form a three race event series. The demands of running an event and a business prompted David to handing on the series to event management gurus, Jason and Lisa Crowther. We asked David what he would say to other businesses on the Coast considering sponsoring community events. “Whilst it’s great in the busy times on the coast to have visitors walk down the steps of their accommodation and find themselves in store, what I know for us is that supporting our community, sponsoring local events and looking after our local residents is what is at the heart of the Allez Sport success story”, says David. The theme of our magazine is ‘Gadgets and Gizmos’ so we asked David what was his. “My favourite is the GPS. In terms of tracking distance, time and run pace this device can significantly improve training and ultimately performance. Gone are the days of tracking out a running route with your car, as I once did. This also gives you the ability to mix up your pace, distance and time instead of doing the same pace and distance without really knowing if you are progressing”, says David.
Choosing the right running shoe can be very confusing. Questions like: Do I need support or neutral? How much support do I need? What is an activation shoe? Should I have a training shoe and a running shoe? What is the best cushioning? What is barefoot running and is it better for me? So many questions and David, Steve and the Team at Allez Sport have all the answers. To find out which questions you should be asking to get the right shoe for you, scan this QR and David shares this information with you and more. 16 ISSUE 7
Allez Sport will continue to support local events in 2014 as well as taking on some personal events of their own. One of the events David will be taking on will be the ‘Hell of the West’ Triathlon in Goondiwindi. David also confirmed to Why Fitness that he may be a first time starter in the iconic short, sharp and gruelling King of Mountain race in Pomona in July. As always, we asked David what was his ‘why’, why does he do what he does? “Because it’s what I have always done. I’ve always stayed fit and healthy. I don’t know what drives it. Even when I was a child, both my parents smoked and I found myself hiding away in my room to avoid the smoke. I don’t know if this motivated me to be healthier but it was always important to me. I did my first triathlon when I was 16, I liked the feeling of being fit, and I it just stuck.” Says David.

MANGOES A beautiful way to celebrate the delicious mango. Gelatine can be use in place of Agar Agar if desired, just check quantities are the same. A natural sweetener like honey can be used if wanted but fresh in season mangoes are usually full of sweet, beautiful flavour. Mangoes are such an exciting fruit, full of flavour. They are also low GI and have many health benefits, a great source of fibre, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin A, minerals like magnesium, potassium and copper and beta-carotene which is a really powerful anti-oxidant.

ADVANCED FITNESS PERFORMANCE with Jodi Chapman
DOES YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM CRASH AFTER EVERY EVENT? Have you ever wondered why so many athletes suffer an immune crash right after training and competing in an event? Whether it’s a cold or flu that sets in, virus, or adrenal fatigue, it often results in a week or two in bed recovering. During the hectic training weeks leading into an event, the stress hormones you produce, such as cortisol and adrenalin, are in high quantities to keep up with the demands of your training. When the time comes to rest and the adrenalin stops pumping, this has an effect on your overall hormonal balance, causing the stress hormone cortisol to also drop. For those who suffer with a relatively low immune system, which you may not notice until this time, the adrenal fatigue can trigger an acute response, rendering you susceptible to infection. The key is to focus on your immune system throughout your training prior to the event, developing a strong defence against the adrenal fatigue that is inevitable post race. I’m not talking about taking echinacea or olive leaf extract every day, although these are helpful. What actually controls your immune system is the balance of good and bad bacteria that are naturally occurring and inhabit your gut.
There is a number of beneficial and necessary bacteria that have an impact on your day to day health, your immune system, and your digestion. These are found in dairy, fermented foods and probiotics. However, approximately 90 per cent of our population are also affected by bad, unnecessary bacteria. These have an even bigger impact on how well you train, and recover from training prior to your events. These bacteria are the cause of your poor immune response during times of stress. If you are one of the 90 per cent of the population carrying these bacteria, you may find that not only do you suffer with low immune responses post-race, you may also find that your muscles ache longer than they should after training sessions, and your recovery time is slower. The reason behind this is that these particular types of bacteria produce D-lactic acid, from the food you eat, in quantities that far outweigh the level of lactic acid that should be circulating in your system. Your body naturally produces L-lactic acid through exercise, for brain function and for energy production. We have an enzyme that can break down the L-lactic acid once it is not needed, but we don’t have an enzyme to break down the D-lactic acid that is formed by these bacteria. So these high levels of D-lactic acid are not able to be removed, leading to pain and tension in muscles, fibromyalgia, fatigue, and mental health symptoms such

as fogginess, insomnia, depression, anxiety, heart palpitations, nervous system problems and much more. It is these bacteria that we often pick up in third world countries or from others who have travelled and are now carriers. The symptoms start with a strong dose of nausea or diarrhoea. Once you suffer the initial acute reaction, the bacteria can grow in your gut creating low immunity. They will stay there until forced out, and unfortunately, no amount of probiotics or good bacteria can overcome these bacteria. Repairing this situation requires a treatment program using substances that kill the offending bacteria, suppressing them and then using specific nutrients to convert your gut into a healthy environment to colonise your beneficial bacteria again. This can take a few months, but the positive effects are noticed within two weeks. If you feel you may be suffering with this type of immune imbalance, consider getting help treating it, as it only continues gut depletion of nutrients and poor immunity further over time, affecting energy production. You may also wish to view the free webinar ‘7 Steps to Freedom from Depression and Anxiety’ at www.advancedwellness.com.au, which goes into detail about these bacteria and how it can affect your overall health.

Gadgets and Gizmos to Nourish a Healthy Body and Mind by Cyndi O’Meara I grew up in Bendigo Victoria with an American mother and Kiwi father. My mother was the oldest of 11 children and by the age of 12 she was doing most of the cooking for the family. Her father was a farmer and around the house block he planted a two acre vegetable garden, fruit orchard, chicken run and cow yard to feed his family. My mum’s family lived in Iowa, so most of the food was grown in summer and any surplus was bottled and put in the basement for the cold winters, when much of the ground was covered in snow and not much could be grown. There weren’t many gadgets and gizmos for cooking in the 40s and 50s, but by the time Mum and Dad arrived in Australia in the 60s, the trend was changing. Mum had a blender and mixer and with those two appliances she made everything from scratch, including all sauces and condiments, mayonnaise 20 ISSUE 7
and pesto, as well as breads and cakes. Her oven and stove were continually being used and all her pots, pans and utensils were made from stainless steel and wood. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all made by Mum from single ingredients. She purchased most of her fruit and vegetables from her local produce store. The meat came from the butcher and dairy was delivered to our front door. We had a small garden for herbs, corn, tomatoes and greens. In the 60s and 70s there were no grocery stores or takeaway fast food places, although I do remember some Friday nights Dad would take the stainless steel pots and pans down to the local Chinese restaurant and fill them up with Chinese food and bring them home for us to eat. One other thing that I noticed about Mum’s kitchen which was very different from many kitchens today is that there was no pantry. There were no packaged foods, just single ingredients and when I think back, from a few
single ingredients Mum made the most amazing dishes, all tasting different depending on which was the major ingredient. I remember she had a nut cupboard, a flour and baking cupboard and a spice rack that was proudly displayed for all to see. Everything else was in the fridge or the fruit basket. Fast forward to my house just 15 years ago and I had every gadget and gizmo in order to make food for my family. My kitchen boasted a yogurt maker, ice-cream maker, bread maker, Kitchen Wizz, Bamix, blender, juicer, pasta maker, flour grinder, nut grinder, coffee grinder, coffee maker, waffle iron and so on. My kitchen cupboards were filled with appliances so that I could make food for my growing brood. And with all the gadgets and gizmos I felt stifled by the cleaning up, so much so that sometimes I was frozen with fear about the cleanup after a cookup. You see, I wanted to feed my family the best and most nutritious foods and I thought the gizmos and gadgets that
feature
I purchased on a regular basis might speed up the delivery of meals. But in hindsight, it did the exact opposite, and just cluttered my kitchen benches and cupboards, so much so that I thought it was easier to go to markets and buy expensive homemade organic goodies from someone else. Then in the year 2000 my husband and I decided to sell our business, pack up our five bedroom, two bathroom, one office, two lounge and one large kitchen house and travel around Australia in a 38 foot bus. Needless to say I had to leave my kitchen gizmos and gadgets behind and choose wisely just two appliances that would feed our family of three children for the next two years. I chose the Kitchen Wizz and blender, and modelled this off what my mother had in her kitchen back in the 1960s. When we arrived home in 2002 and began to open all the boxes we had packed and stored for two years, we realised there was a lot of stuff in the boxes that we didn’t need. So we decided to close all the boxes up again. I find that gizmos and gadgets, not only in the kitchen but throughout my life, create more chaos and clutter than the problems you may think they solve. Now I like the simple life with a few key gadgets that do the job well. My trusty computer and smartphone are my communication and information gadgets that I know I can’t do without. In the kitchen they are my source of ideas and new recipes to feed my now grown family and many friends who visit for family night dinners. As for the kitchen, I have two modern appliances, my Thermomix and Hurom juicer (for making nut milks) that are key
to making healthy foods from scratch. They make my life easy.
I find that gizmos and gadgets, not only in the kitchen but throughout my life, create more chaos and clutter than the problems you may think they solve.
I am someone who does not buy any packaged foods. My pantry is small and is filled with jars of single ingredient including nuts, seeds, some grains, organic eggs, spices, cacao wafers, camu camu, seaweed salt and rapadura sugar. From these foods I can make thousands of recipes with different tantalising tastes, both sweet and savoury. My fridge is filled with foods purchased at the market or my local speciality fruit and vegetable store and my garden is brimming with salad greens, tomatoes, sweet peas, beans and a variety of herbs. I have a farmer who supplies me with beautiful grass fed meat and my dairy is from the local farmers and speciality stores. I believe that cooking foods from scratch from local sources as much as possible is at the heart of the healing of our bodies and minds. We must have a positive relationship with food and know what our foods are made from and how they are grown if we are to enjoy health and vitality. The family meal not only nourishes the body but fills the heart with love. In this modern day there are amazing gadgets. My single most important gadget is my Thermomix. It makes it possible for me to deliver healthy foods, made from scratch for all meals all year round just as my mother did but with less time and more efficiency. www.changinghabits.com.au WHY FITNESS 21

WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray
Nothing beats the feeling of being rewarded for a big physical and mental effort. We see it on the faces of footballers on grand final day and Olympic athletes on the winners’ podium. But that rush of self-pride and fulfilment isn’t reserved for elite athletes only; it’s well and truly within reach of you, me and every weekend warrior out there. All you need is a goal, a plan and some good old fashioned determination. The Sunshine Coast is the perfect place to chase this natural high, with a heap of fantastic outdoor events to get involved in all year round. The recent Tough Mudder race and the Noosa Traithlon Multi-Sports Festival are two prime examples of events that delivered immense enjoyment to the thousands of participants who took part. You only had to be near the finish line of either of these events to see the outpouring of positive emotions that flowed from every competitor who sprinted or staggered across that line. These events provided people with their own unique physical and mental challenge, whether it was finishing first, in the top 50 or just finishing! It’s a safe bet that the great majority who entered either of these events started with a goal, executed a plan and exercised plenty of determination. If you’re yet to experience a natural high like this, the great news is it’s never too late! There’s an abundance of local events that you can enter to work towards a personal fitness goal. Encouraging friends, family members or work colleagues to join you on your quest is a great way to strengthen your own resolve and personal relationships. A great starting point could be the Triathlon Pink event at Stockland Park on November 24. This fantastic social event includes a short distance triathlon that is perfect for beginners and also raises money for the fight against breast cancer. My personal favourite is Strava, where I can track all runs, walks and cycles with splits, records and challenges. I also love the Tabata app for my intense interval workouts and another favourite at present is You Are Your Own Gym app. I love listening to podcasts while I work out and I can carry my iPhone in my Spibelt! I wouldn’t be without it for any workout. Carren: When it comes to fitness, trust me, I’ve tried everything to either get me going, or keep me going and going faster, stronger, harder and longer! I’ve got the heart rate monitor, the personal trainer on line, the iPod, iPad and micro-chip, the metronome, the cadence counter, the pedometer and the pulse check. After investing a truck load of money and truck load of brain space to work it all out… I’m back to natural. JUST DO IT! In the past I’ve been a bit of a gadget guru but when it comes to my health and fitness, I’ve put it all aside and just talk myself through it. Run for fun is my motto and I figure that if I can’t get myself motivated, no mechanical device is going to do it for me. Besides, I’d rather be plugged in to nature and the rhythm of my body moving than being plugged in to the reading on a gizmo! Cyndi: Keeping fit, moving and doing some sort of exercise is not something I find hard to do. I like to do my exercise outdoors, so my gizmos and gadgets are the sun, sand, waves, trees and the ground beneath my feet. Other gadgets I use are my friends; my walking partner Rikki is my greatest gadget to keep me honest and make sure I don’t let her down by not showing up for exercise. If I’m alone and I don’t have much time and need to study, I use my iPod and listen to informing podcasts such as Up For A Chat while I run, do press ups or simply walk along Mooloolaba beach - my playground.

Chiropractic Matters with Dr David Hendrey | Vibrant Healthy Living
Are your nerves or spine holding you back?
CHIROPRACTIC AND INJURY PREVENTION There are three reason athletes use chiropractic to help them perform at their best: 1. Injury management 2. Injury prevention 3. Performance enhancement Shane Kelly, Australia’s triple world champion cyclist, speaks about his experience: “Before chiropractic I was never able to do the training required leading up to a competition and was always frustrated at breaking down”. Many injuries occur when we push ourselves beyond what the tissue can handle. Simple enough, right? But what happens if one side of our body is fatiguing faster than the other? This imbalance makes you prone to injury. This is what was happening to Shane.

Many injuries occur when we push ourselves beyond what the tissue can handle. In my last article we discussed neurological fatigue, and how we can lose performance if our nerves get overworked. One of the major causes of this is spinal dysfunction or ‘subluxation’. Chiropractors look for these subluxations, focusing on the balance and symmetry of the body. They especially ensure the spinal system is allowing the nerves to fire correctly, in the right order and with the right timing or synchronicity. One fascinating study measured the core strength against a resistance plate before and after a chiropractic session or ‘adjustment’. The athletes improved core strength by 21 per cent instantly. Now it is impossible to make the muscles suddenly 21 per cent stronger. What was occurring was that prior to the chiropractic adjustment, the muscle was only performing at 79 per cent of its capacity. The brain was deliberately down-regulating or shutting down some of the power to minimise the chance of an injury occurring. This is why so many athletes use chiropractic to help them reduce the chance of an injury and perform at their peak. Visit your chiropractor to ensure you are getting the most out of your body. Industry Education Matters with Ted Faa | Sunshine Coast TAFE
MEASURE, TRACK AND PUSH YOURSELF WITH GADGETS AND GIZMOS The increasing level of sophistication in gadgets and gizmos targeted at the fitness industry continues to grow and help change the way we work out. Technical devices can now track weight loss, monitor your heart rate, measure metabolism and so much more. They can help you stay engaged, challenged and motivated in your quest for a fitter, healthier you. Better still, with miniaturisation and global competition, the devices are getting smaller, cheaper and even waterproof! Earphones designed for sport have twist lock, water resistant designs that actually stay in your ears. Mobile devices are one of the more cost effective ways to digitally monitor and improve your fitness regime. Many mobile devices have built in accelerometers, motion processors and timers. On a broader scale, consider garments and gadgets that you attach to your body with capabilities to monitor breathing rate, global position, elevation, temperature, heart rate, sweat production and 3D movement. These innovations not only tell you about your calorie and kilojoule production (measurement units of heat expended while exercising, or stored in food), they also provide valuable insight into your rest and sleep patterns. This information helps you to understand your body’s ability to heal itself and grow muscles while in recovery mode. Amazingly, some devices even produce a high voltage but low current electric shock to activate muscles for passive exercise, while other devices use low voltage, low current output to help determine the body composition of fat and muscle! A healthy diet assists your health and physical performance, but your body’s ability to continuously rebuild and regenerate tissues and energy stores, help you achieve long term goals. Getting the right amount of nutrients and regular, quality sleep is critical for health and fitness. Being able to monitor these will help to increase the productivity of your exercise and assist you with healthy living.

WELCOME TO THE SMARTPHONE ERA OF GOLF The game of golf hasn’t changed much in the 600 or so years since it was first played by the Scottish, but the technology behind clubs, golf carts, balls and tees is changing all the time. New materials and manufacturing processes mean a golf ball travels further than ever before. Tees for balancing that dimpled sphere come in frictionless, flexible models that can help improve accuracy and distance. Golf carts are giving way to hovercraft while Google has some that valet park themselves. And don’t get us started on the technology of plaid pants! Now the game is entering a new phase: the smartphone era. These days every player on the course can instantly access things you formerly had to rely on a caddy or coach for. The apps have further capabilities like sharing with friends through social media such as Facebook, booking tee times online and even ordering food and beverages from the course. Whether you want to set up a tee time, perfect your swing or just find your way around the course, there are a number of phone apps to whet your golfing appetite.
Now the game is entering a new phase: the smartphone era. These days every player on the course can instantly access things you formerly had to rely on a caddy or coach for. These are my top picks that may improve your game. They can be found in iTunes or Android stores: Golf shot GPS Gallus Golf Game Book Just remember that some apps cannot be used in competitions, unless the club has a local rule, because of the built in compass on your phone. Enjoy your golf.

STAY MOTIVATED THROUGH SUMMER With the warmer months now upon us, are you in the best shape of the year? Or are you still struggling to get that bikini body or find the courage to take your shirt off at your local beach? If this is you, then it’s possible that what is lacking is a confidence that comes from being motivated to be in the best shape you can.
Motivation comes from a number of different sources which are easily accessed. In this issue I recommend three things you can do to help you to stay motivated through summer: 1. Download a Training App A lot of gyms have their own app nowadays to promote training diaries, workout videos and diet trackers. These are a great way to track your food, schedule your training and even get daily motivation tips. 2. Download a Running App The Run Keeper app will help you to keep track of your cardio sessions, recording data such as average speed, distance travelled, route memory and other users’ routes. You can set goals, see how many calories you burn as well as overall distance run. This can really assist if you are losing interest in your workouts, especially when you hit goals like beating your own time! 3. Find a Support Team Surrounding yourself with a support team can make your fitness journey so much easier. These are the kinds of people that pump you up, cheer you on and believe in you. For me this is my fiancé, Jess. We prep our meals together, train at the same gym and just complement each other with everything we do. Without her by my side, my drive to achieve just that little bit more would be nonexistent. She is my rock and if I don’t think I can do something her voice is present in my mind telling me that I can do it. With these tools your workouts will be more enjoyable and motivating and give you a sense of achievement. Your desire for a bikini body or the insecurity about taking off your shirt at the beach will be outweighed by the new-found confidence you share with yourself and your support team.

WEARING A STATE OF THE ART GADGET CAN GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE Swimming gadgets have changed dramatically over the last few years and have been one of the most talked about improvements in Olympic history. There are many gadgets for swimming that have revolutionised leisure and competitive swimming. They include goggles, pullbuoys, kickboards, fins, hand paddles, water belts and dumb-bells, swim caps, stretch-cords, watches, GPS, nose clips, ear plugs and many more. The most revolutionised and most controversial in Olympic history have been race swim suits. Yes, the new race suits are helping swimmers go up to 6 per cent faster in the last decade and there are new suits every Olympic Games. The first ever suits were made of wool. In the 1920s silk began to appear, in the 30s rayon started and after World War II race swim suits made of nylon hit the market.
Race suits now on the market use a plastic-like, water repellent material to make the swimmer’s surface slick and smooth, like the hull of a boat or the skin of a fish. The aim is to hold the layer of water moving over a swimmer against their body surface, keeping the water flowing evenly, rather than have it break away and cause water disturbance. Between then and now many different materials and construction methods have been used to make the best race suit possible. Your Skin Matters with Donna Gordon | Skin House
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK Seek and you may find the beauty within or be the geek that just has to give it a go! Ageing brings a lot of unwanted changes to the body, one of which can be saggy skin. But there’s no law that says you have to deal with flaps under your arms and above your knees when you turn another year older! There are all these gadgets and gizmos out there designed to primp and preen you to perfection, working overtime to deliver salonworthy results, all while you’re curled up on your couch. Really? Many gadgets and gizmos come and go, all shouting out to ‘save your good looks’ and ‘stop the sagging’. Hmmmm…
What I highly recommend is that you eat vitamin rich foods to save your skin, along with medical grade, nonprescription product lotions. The LASER HAIR REMOVAL hand held gadget works in the same way as a salon treatment but will probably take you ten times longer to see results due to low power wavelengths. This is for your safety of course, but hey, you just want to be hair free! Then we have the INFRA-RED SKIN STIMULATION. Simply enter in your age and problem area, such as bingo wings, saggy bum, saddlebags etc. and the iLift does the rest. Awesome! But the fine print indicates you need to use this magic wand seven days a week for the rest of your life!

The verdict on all these devices is that there is someone out there lining their pockets on your vanity. So step away from the mirror, girlfriends. What I highly recommend is that you eat vitamin rich foods to save your skin, along with medical grade, non-prescription product lotions. So your fragrance-matched body cream is divine, however a clinical strength, 12 per cent to 40 per cent lactic peel every four weeks will be well worth the investment to hold back and rejuvenate sagging skin. Clinical, medical strength treatments get a ‘yes’ but with gizmos beware of the ‘order now pay later’ tease for the latest gadget that promises you a wrinkle free magical outcome with a bonus! TRIATHLETES AND THEIR GIZMOS If there has ever been a sport with more gadget and gizmos than triathlon I would be surprised. Triathlon is essentially three sports combined into one, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why there seems to be an endless array of devices and equipment that have either evolved or been developed for the sport. One of the first and most well known devices for triathlon is aerodynamic time trial bars, which are almost universally adopted today. They were first used in the 1989 Tour de France by Greg Lemond, who turned a looming defeat into an unlikely victory with the aid of the device. Few gadgets and devices can give such a singular performance advantage, but using a combination can certainly lead to performance improvements.
One of the first and most well known devices for triathlon is aerodynamic time trial bars, which are almost universally adopted today. They were first used in the 1989 Tour de France by Greg Lemond, who turned a looming defeat into an unlikely victory with the aid of the device. My favourite device is the ATS altitude machine. It is designed to simulate high altitude training, allowing the user to simulate a low oxygen environment of up to 10,000 feet or around 3,000 metres. It has broad based usage benefits due to its ability to improve the carrying capacity of red blood cells as well as evidence of permanent improvements to haematocrit levels, all using natural means. In recent years we have hired the ATS altitude machine out to an array of customers ranging from athletes training for important races to people on a weight loss journey. There are also those planning a trekking trip in Nepal, who wish to adapt to high altitude before they go, so they need to spend less days at base camp adapting to a low oxygen environment. The studies and testing on altitude training are very involved and scientific. Look out for some of our experiences and how they can help you achieve your goals in the next edition of Why Fitness. WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper
The Results: Girls: Happy – 2, Unhappy – 23
often than not, the outside is fine but the inside is all kinds of messed up.
Boys: Happy – 14, Unhappy – 11
Technically speaking.
Wowzers!
And Me? It’s at about this point in the discussion that I need to fess up with some relevant information. I’m not just speaking here as a researcher, observer or scientist. I’m also speaking as a bloke who, for a period of time, looked for approval and acceptance through his body. For about five years in my late teens and early twenties I was an obsessive and, if I’m being totally honest, insecure body builder who did some seriously dumb stuff (no drugs though) in order to achieve a certain look.
92 per cent of the female respondents said they did not like how their body looked. Considering that none of them were particularly overweight, that figure is staggering. For blokes, it was 44 per cent. And while I can’t say for certain, I’m pretty sure you would be astounded at some of the bodies that people are unhappy with. Or maybe you wouldn’t.
Trim, Taut and Miserable Have you noticed how many people are dissatisfied with their bodies? No matter how great they look. Or how well their body works. No matter how lean, strong or fit they are. Talk to a total hottie and, more often than not, they will tell you how out of shape they are. How fat they feel. How terrible they look. And how they need to ‘drop a few pounds’. Talk to some random people with no major health issues and you’ll often find that they too are unhappy with their bodies. Many people will tell you that they actually hate their body. Really? Hate? Yep, hate! Good grief. Research. Of sorts. A little while back, I did some research. Admittedly, it wasn’t a particularly formal or super-methodical process, but it was research nonetheless. Kind of. To keep my research kind-of-valid for this investigation, I only questioned people who were in reasonably good shape, by general standards. I asked 25 blokes and 25 women one question: “Are you happy with how your body looks?” As it was my research and my rules, I told them that they could only answer yes or no. Before I asked the question, I instructed them to (1) be totally honest (2) not over-think the answer and (3) provide an answer within five seconds.
Square Peg, Round Hole In the world of gym owners, exercise scientists and personal trainers, I occasionally feel like something of an oddity. Not better or worse, just different. Unlike most fitness professionals, the physical doesn’t interest me nearly and much as the psychological and the emotional. Sure, muscles are cool, but the person who lives beneath those muscles is what really fascinates me. The thinking. The beliefs. The values. The behaviours. The reactions. The choices. The fears. Especially the fear of not being pretty enough. Pretty enough for what? To be loved? Desired? Wanted? Needed? Popular? All of it? The Beauty Culture To be honest, the practice of striving for happiness via physical appearance is something that makes me a little sad. Like it or not, want it or not, you and I live in a society that is obsessed with physical beauty. A society obsessed with being lean. And having defined muscles. Flawless skin. A particular look and shape. Yet in the middle of our appearance-obsession, we’re as miserable as ever. Ironically, more often than not, our misery has nothing to do with our body and everything to do with our thinking… about our body. Our attitudes. Our beliefs. More
In many ways, my life revolved around my appearance. Then one day I woke up in my greatbig-lumpy-veiny-stupid-looking body and it dawned on me that my gigantic arms and pecs didn’t really equate to happiness. Who knew? All my mental and emotional issues were still there. The only difference was that they now had a bigger body to live in. Of course I was still insecure. Insecure and huge. A more common combination than you might expect. I’ve since come to understand that mental and emotional issues will never be resolved with a physical solution. I won’t bore you with my post-awakening details but suffice to say that, since that time, I have been more interested in the person beyond the body. After all, my body is not who I am but rather, where I live. Okay, it took me a while to figure that out. In relation to this issue, these days I tend to ask people two questions up front: 1. Does your body work? 2. Is it healthy? If your answers are ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then I suggest that perhaps your body is not the problem.

WHY FITNESS APPS MATTER Apps road tested by Jakki Goodall of Inhale.com.au Like many, I have a love/hate relationship with technology. As a geek I love how it can solve problems for me every day but I hate how it can lock me up in a room and keep me from being active. So when I started to research what fitness apps were all about my world seemed to suddenly come into alignment. I realised that this smart phone is my constant companion and is available with relevant health and fitness information every moment of every day. By installing a balance of apps it could keep me connected to my social networks for support when I was feeling less than motivated or provide encouragement and acknowledgment when I had achieved a PB. It had the capacity to track my food intake and total exercise and could help motivate me with reminders to keep me focused and on track to achieving my goals. Having a balance of quality apps is the key. Some will do certain things well but will fall down in other areas. There is no advantage in buying 3 different apps to track your running. So do your research before you hit install. SET YOUR CRITERIA Had to be available on both iphone and android. (Sorry Windows you fell into the too hard basket.) My favourite gadget for my business would be my iPhone. I have been in this industry for 20 years and with the iPhone I can now do all my admin with our database by iPhone remotely and are not bound to the office all day. With our business we contact over 220 team captains on a weekly basis and back in 90s that was done by landline tied to a desk. Now I can be at the gym or having a juice and do it all with one tap. Our Facebook site is also very active so we can constantly do updates on events and pics and give our customers visual feeds. So that’s why I love my gadget so much. It gives me more freedom and my work hours are cut by half.

Favourite Gadget or Gizmo The Waterco energy saving pool pump. The electricity costs for running a back yard swimming pool can be expensive. Waterco have produced the Eco Pump with an energy rating of six stars, which will lower your quarterly electricity bill significantly, up to 67%. Another benefit is that it is extremely quiet, so it can be run at night during low tariff times without waking up the neighbours. The slower flow rate also has the added benefit of improving the pool’s filtration efficiency, enhancing the clarity of the pool water.

FIT AND FAMOUS
with Richard Fogarty Fit and Famous sat down with champion motocross rider Ford Dale and got into the important questions about his life and what it takes to be the champion at his chosen sport. What would you be doing if you didn’t get into fitness? My whole life has revolved around motocross since I started racing
at the age of four, so I can’t really imagine doing anything else or not being a part of some type of fitness.
What is the best sporting memory you have? Winning the 2012 Australian Motocross Championship.
Do you have any superstitions when training and competing in your sport? Not so much any more, but when I was a kid I thought I rode better if I wore red riding gear. I had to get over that as I got older, because sponsors chose what I was to race in.
What piece of advice would you give to an up and coming sports man or woman? If you want it bad enough you will make it happen.
What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve done during competing? My first indoor super cross race as a pro in front of a huge crowd, I was 17 years old racing against the best in the country for the factory Yamaha 450cc team. I was coming second and had a big crash which put pressure on my front brake cable whenever I’d turn right. There was one right hand turn on the track and I crashed every lap on that turn until the finish. I was too flustered to realise what was happening. What is the one thing you are good at apart from sport? I’d like to say business. Who is your favourite sports person? My mentor and close friend Ben Townley.
Mindset MAKEOVER! "AFTER THE CRASH, I AM NOW FULLY RECOVERED... PHYSICALLY. BUT I GUESS IT’S MY CONFIDENCE THAT IS STILL RECOVERING..." IS THIS YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?

1. Be grateful: If you are in gratitude you can’t have judgment
3. Ask a question: Instead of going into the wrongness ask “what’s right about this I’m not getting?” This will get you out of the trenches. 4. Do something different: Go out in nature, have a bubble bath even if you are busy sometimes stepping away gives you a different perspective on things 5. Stop worrying: Especially about what other people think of you. What you think of you is what matters.

Orange Date and Pistachio Muffins MAKES: 12 Recipe from SYMPLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE BOOK 7 2 egg whites ⅓ cup white sugar ¾ teaspoon bicarb soda 1 x 120g can puréed apple Heinz® (found in baby food section) ½ cup fresh orange juice 2 tablespoons finely grated orange rind ½ cup chopped dried dates 2 cups self raising flour cooking spray ⅓ cup (50g) chopped pistachio nuts 1 teaspoon white sugar
WHY COOK with Annette Sym The QR Code Technology We all have to keep up with technology. In my latest cookbook Symply Too Good To Be True 7 I have trail blazed a new idea in cookbooks by using QR code technology. It’s great for my readers to be able to just scan the QR code with their smart phones or tablets and then be able to watch me cook my fabulous low-fat healthy recipes.
Preheat oven to 180ºC fan forced. Step 1: In a large mixing bowl beat egg whites and sugar for 1 minute.
Step 2: Add bicarb soda to apple sauce (it will froth), then add to bowl and mix with a wooden spoon. Step 3: Pour in juice, add rind and dates, combine well. Step 4: Sift flour into wet mix and gently fold together. DO NOT BEAT as this will make the muffins tough. The less the mixture is moved, the lighter the muffins. Step 5: Coat a 12-cup muffin tray with cooking spray, then spoon mixture evenly into each muffin cup. Sprinkle an equal amount of pistachio nuts over top of each muffin then sprinkle a small amount of sugar over each one. Step 6: Bake 20-25 minutes or until firm to touch in centre. Leave to rest for a few minutes then place onto a wire rack to cool. Suitable to be frozen.
Scan the QR code now and watch me bake my deliciously healthy Orange Date and Pistachio Muffins. Happy cooking, Annette. Annette Sym is an international author and speaker and the creator of seven bestselling low-fat cookbooks Symply Too Good To Be True.

Why... GPS?
Why... COMPRESSION GARMENTS?
Global Positioning System or GPS is the newest trend taking the fitness world by storm and making athletes feel like James Bond at the same time.
Ask us Whether it is professional athletes, weekend warriors or fitness first timers, compression clothing has become the attire of choice for everyone getting out and active.
why?
This type of clothing has grown into one of the most important aspects of a professional athlete’s performance and recovery, and is a great way for everyone to feel comfortable and look great while exercising. Compression garments offer a range of benefits including improving circulation while exercising, keeping muscles warm, aiding in recovery post exercise, reducing sweat and stopping rashes and chafing. The science behind compression garments was born from hospital stockings, originally used for patients who had undergone surgery. The stockings ensured circulation was maintained, but now these specially fitted pieces of clothing maintain muscle temperature while improving circulation, by being tailored at differing levels of pressure to force blood circulation through the body. BodyScience, Skins and 2XU are some of the companies who produce numerous types and styles of compression garments: calf, short leg, full leg, upper body and, if you are really keen, full body!
Athletes are using GPS capabilities in watches, phones and personal computers to track their runs, rides and sessions better than ever before. GPS works by sending a signal from your watch, phone or other device to a space satellite orbiting the earth. This then locks onto your position and tracks your movements as you exercise.
GPS has developed dramatically in the last decade, to the point now that you can track entire sessions, distances, speeds and elevations while comparing heart rates as well as previous sessions on specifically designed apps and programs. Garmin, Timex, Polar, Suunto and Tom Tom are all leading producers of GPS fitness watches and personal computers. There are a range of new websites and programs allowing you to not only track your sessions but compare what you have done with your friends and family, for extra motivation. If you are looking to add another element to your daily run and ride, or if you are in need of that extra little piece of motivation to train a little harder, the new GPS technology might be just the thing.
You certainly don’t need to be a professional to gain the benefits of compression clothing. It may be just the thing to get you feeling better and recovering faster.
