EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster Goodbye winter, hello spring! There have been lots of challenges making the rounds on social media this past few weeks – the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, The Gratitude Challenge, The Pay It Forward Challenge. Anything that’s focusing on making a difference and is positive is fine by me. One of my favourites, though, has been one called the ‘first world problems challenge.’ It’s essentially a backhanded and humorous way of reminding ourselves just how good we have it. For me, winter on the Sunshine Coast is a darn good ‘problem’ to have. Nevertheless, it always intrigues me to see so many of us waking up from our winter hiatus and ready to step out into the warm and sunny days of spring. It really is magnificent and the perfect time to ramp up our activity levels, breathe in lungfuls of fresh air and get our bodies moving.
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is more people who have come alive. Howard Thurman
August has been epic. This is my new word for busy, because your words become your reality and it definitely seems to be working. September will see me spend 10 days in Las Vegas to celebrate the birthday of my partner Matt (my first holiday since starting Why Fitness), my beautiful daughter Issy will turn 16 and my amazing friend Vickie Magic will be shaving her head at the end of the month, after a month of fundraising for her brother-in-law who is battling cancer and for cancer research. Epic! This issue is all about spring cleaning our minds and bodies and we’re sharing loads of ways to help you do this. My absolute favourite part of this issue is our ‘Sunshine Coast Bucket List – 20 Things To Do And Experience.’ It’s a special four page lift-out, complete with places to tick things off as you go. We want to help you make the most of all there is to do here that will get your blood pumping, and remind us all to be grateful for the first world problems of the Sunshine Coast. Get your big black texta ready to start ticking off this amazing list! We’re not on holidays everyone… we live here! Yours in fitness, food, fun AND gratitude,

Ten Simple Steps
to Revitalise Your Mind, Body and Spirit
this Spring BY HENRY HOUND
WHEN YOU LIVE AND WORK IN A DOG HOUSE, IT’S EASY TO ACCUMULATE CLUTTER THAT GETS IN THE WAY OF THE BEST EFFORTS. SO THIS LITTLE DOGGIE LOOKS FORWARD TO A PROPER SPRING CLEANING TO GET A FRESH START. IT’S THE SAME WITH OUR BODIES. EVEN THOSE OF US IN THE FITNESS BIZ FIND THAT JUNK BUILDS UP AND WEIGHS YOU DOWN, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY. HERE THEN IS HENRY THE HEALTH HOUND’S OWN SPRING CLEANING FOR REVITALISING YOUR WHOLE SELF.
1. HYDROTHERAPY CLEANSING Water cleanses and restores life. A cleansing/detox bath uses two handfuls of sea salt, two handfuls of baking soda and four spoons of ginger powder in hot water. Encourage detoxifying perspiration daily with a steam bath, sauna and exercise. Use yoga twists to facilitate elimination of waste and impurities. Before a bath, steam or shower, dry brush your skin using a natural bristle brush in long strokes to help cleanse the lymphatic system. Begin at the feet and work up. Use circular movements over your belly, then your hands, arms, back and shoulders. Then use gentle downward strokes on your neck, throat and chest.
2. DEEP BREATHING Deep breathing stimulates a lymphatic flow cleansing. A yogic breath is done seated, twice a day. First exhale, then inhale through the nose to a count of four, hold the breath for seven, and exhale through the mouth for an eight count. The fire breath to cleanse the sinus and the mind is done by closing off the right nostril and rapidly inhaling and exhaling through the left nostril for 30 seconds, then switching sides.
6 ISSUE 15
feature
3. HERBS FOR CLEANSING Environment, food additives and stress challenge the body detox organs; your skin, intestines, liver, lungs, kidneys and lymph system. Adding certain herbs to your daily meals for two to three weeks along with a healthy diet supports those detox organs. Alfalfa alkalises and detoxes the body as well as having protein and vitamins. Cilantro is considered a metal detoxer. A compress of basil can help skin eruptions and bacteria. Burdock can help remove toxins. Dandelion and turmeric can support the liver cleanse. Garlic has antifungal abilities. The catechins found in green tea increase body detox enzymes. Milk thistle is believed to be a liver cleanser and detoxer. Herbal teas can help support cleansing – include dandelion, ginger, burdock, and juniper berry. Herbal foot patches from bamboo vinegar can help cleanse and draw out toxins.
4. A FRESH TASTE Spring bursts forth with newly available fruits and vegetables to try out. Add one new choice to your meal each day or week. Cook or serve it so you feel it will be delicious. Eat it in a mindful way, noting its sensations of taste, visual appeal and textures. Did you feel energised after eating it?
5. ATTRACTIVE ATTRACTIONS It happens to everyone – visitors find places to go in your own backyard
that you never seem to get around to visiting yourself. Experience a local attraction for an adventure – museum, park, garden, walking path, gallery, concert, wine or brewery tour.
6. COLOURISE FOR UPLIFTED MOOD Psychological studies show that colours stimulate hormones that affect moods and spirit by way of the central nervous system. Awaken your spring senses with colours. Orange sparks creativity and enthusiasm. Purple inspires confidence, courage and conquering obstacles. Green is a colour of balance and harmony between head and heart, and renews and restores energy. Yellow sparks joy and happiness. Blue soothes and lowers blood pressure – great for a relaxation break. Use your colour in a new item of clothing or a new decorative piece, or paint one or more walls in your home for a new look and new way of feeling.
7. THE SPROUTS OF NEWNESS Plant your own tiny indoor garden. You can start with seeds or cuttings in a few little pots. Give each pot a personal spiritual meaning such as hope, peace, family and love. In just 15 minutes a day, tend to your plants and smile to see your growing special meanings or affirmations.
8. SPRINGTIME AROMAS Studies show that scents have powerful effects on the brain’s chemicals and
hormones. Celebrate the change of season in your home. Use essential oils. Freshen drawers with cotton wool pads moistened with bergamot, lime and lavender oils. Lavender has a soothing aroma. Bergamot and eucalyptus awaken your spring senses with energising qualities. Lavender, geranium and basil blends create delight, or try the woodiness of frankincense and cedar wood. Natural refreshing scents are pine, fir, cedar wood, frankincense, lemon, orange or grapefruit in any combination.
9. RECONNECT The new season is a perfect time to renew a friendship with someone you’ve lost touch with, or just felt you didn’t have the time to spare. Open up one spring afternoon to re-grow this special connection.
10. SPRING LOOSE YOUR INNER CHILD Everyone has that inner child spirit. Renew the fun and excitement with a silly, fun-loving deed. Splash through a puddle or patch of mud. Go down a slide or swing high in the air. Splurge on a hot fudge sundae. Of course you do not need to do all of these things, or even more than one to get a fresh slate. Simply pick the one or two that seem best for your lifestyle – and clean house, mind, body and spirit!

MIND FITNESS with Vickie Magic
On 15 August I participated in Tough Mudder for the second time. A few people before and since have said, “Wow, I couldn’t have done that.” So here is what I know for sure. Almost everything we do is whatever we say it is. So if you say, “I couldn’t do that”, then that is your absolute truth and you won’t ever be able to. Know that while I started off talking about Tough Mudder, what I am really talking about is everything for you. I can’t train, I am too this or too that. I can’t get up in the mornings. I am not coordinated so I can’t do classes. I get too nervous to do public speaking
WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray
Have you heard the big news? The Sunshine Coast will host the Southern Hemisphere’s first ever IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2016! It’s another step to becoming the major events capital of regional Australia. A worldwide spotlight will be on our region, and small businesses will get a boost from the 3000 competitors and the people travelling with them. You imagine if the Sunshine Coast won Gold Lotto – 10, 15 or $20 million dumped into the middle of our region – and we were told, “Local small businesses, share that out.” That’s exactly what this is when we bring these big events to town!
Whatever it is that you say about yourself is the thing that sometimes holds you back. It’s absolutely amazing how our minds control everything about us. Have you heard the story about the railway worker who got locked in the cold room overnight? He died. They found notes from him saying he was turning blue and saying his goodbyes. Only thing was that the cold room was broken and it wasn’t cold inside at all. His mind decided that he was going to die because he was locked in a cold room and as always, our minds win.
Council is working hard to secure events like this and as we do, the Sunshine Coast region’s reputation as a world-class major events host continues to grow. And 2016 is standing out as our ‘World Year’ for international events – the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (The Aussies) and the World Outrigger Sprint Titles are also on the Coast that year. These events join established events like the Mooloolaba Triathlon, the Queensland Garden Expo, Caloundra Music Festival, Sunshine Coast Marathon and many more.
At 12 kilometres into our Tough Mudder event my sprained ankle injury decided to show its head and the thought of another six kilometres didn’t feel possible. Top that with absolute pouring rain making us absolutely freezing, and I can assure you that the only thing that made me able to finish the event was the fact that I made a decision to finish. Once we make a decision to do something, the chances of it happening are tenfold. Sure there are still things we won’t be able to do, that is true; however, I believe that we absolutely at least double what we can do.
More and more sporting, arts and cultural organisations are beginning to see the natural advantages the Sunshine Coast has over so many other regions, including capital cities. We have the all-year climate, the venues, the facilities for both training and performing, the open spaces and no congestion, quality accommodation, the roads and the airport to get here easily – the list goes on. But perhaps most importantly, we have the lifestyle and the image which reflects so well upon so many of these events.
So the point of this article is to ask you to have a think. What are you convincing yourself you can’t do? If you just start telling yourself you can, you’re halfway there. It starts with your mind, then your mouth, then your actions. DO IT! Vickie Magic is the owner/editor of Business Matters Magazine and partners with Jen Forster in Why Fitness Magazine. Vickie is passionate about helping with your mind set, she runs regular weekend retreats for this purpose. You can contact Vickie on 0433 198 868 or vmagic@bmmag.com.au 8 ISSUE 15
Make no mistake – we WILL become the events capital of regional Australia. Jason O’Pray, Economic Development (Tourism, Sport and Major Events) Portfolio, Division 8 Councillor.

The Chef’s Palate is a great local business that sources local products to make delicious sauces, chutneys, marinades and pastes. The owner, Murray, noticed the Sunshine Coast’s movement towards organic whole foods, free from dairy, gluten and most importantly, processing. He believes food should never be boring, so make these products a regular in your pantry for fun, healthy and flavoursome meals that add a bit of life, excitement and personality to your table.
Meet our Family… Heather Newmann and baby Seth Tell us your BFresh story? I started working at BFresh 9 years ago. I began on registers as a part time job but was then asked to replace someone in the kitchen who was away. Since then I have stayed in the kitchen. I had a baby boy, Seth [pictured], so I was away for a while but have come back to the store and am loving it. What do you love about being a part of the BFresh family? Everyone is so energetic. I love working with everyone in the kitchen. It’s great because everyone laughs and has a joke; it’s great fun. I also love working with the high quality products too. What’s your favourite BFresh product? I would say the cheese. King Island Triple Cream Brie is just amazing. I take it with me everywhere!

Scotty Farrell:
The Natural Triathlete
10 ISSUE 15
localsuccess
Just like your regular triathlete Scotty Farrell trains hard, sets goals and more often than not achieves them. Unlike many triathletes, however, he fuels himself on a diet made up completely of wholefoods. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Scotty to discuss this nourishing way of life. Having been a triathlete for five years, Scotty hasn’t always relied on a wholefood rich diet to fuel his active lifestyle. When he first began competing Scotty, like many of his fellow competitors, was enticed by clever marketing tactics and magazine advertisements telling him to pump his body with protein and supplements to achieve better results. Scotty’s inspiration to make a change came when his wife Nicki gave birth to their son Arthur two years ago. With a new child in mind, this was the motivation he wanted and needed to revaluate his life and figure out where he wanted to be in 10 years time. He decided that a career in nutrition was where his passion lay. A change in diet and change in career were exactly what he needed. Scotty left his job as a schoolteacher in Hervey Bay and moved to the Sunshine Coast for study. A nutrition and dietetics degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast set him up with the knowledge to understand
Scotty's grandfather is his inspiration who is picuted with Scotty here (Scotty rarely drinks but has an occasional beer with his Grandad). He says his grandfather is just a good honest man, who worked hard all his life and has created a family that is loving and kind and honest instilled with good morals and values. He was with Scotty during his win in New Zealand and will accompany him to the Kona World Championship in October.
the foods he should be eating to achieve his best results as a competitive triathlete. This is where his journey with wholefoods began. A diet rich in wholefoods is made up of ingredients such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean, organic meats. These food items differ from your average supermarket ones as they’re almost all completely in their natural form. Scotty believes that whether you’re an athlete or not, everything we need to keep our bodies healthy and sustain energy is available through food. Scotty wants to show other athletes that it is possible to get great results eating only natural wholefoods. Since beginning this wholesome lifestyle, Scotty has had remarkable results in triathlons he has competed in. He recently competed in the Hervey Bay 100, Hell of the West in Goondiwindi and Ironman New Zealand where he placed 1st in the 30 – 34 year old age group also placing 16th overall in the amongst dozens of professionals. This result will see him fly to Kona in Hawaii in October to compete in the Holy Grain of Ironman, the World Championships. A natural and nourishing diet has helped Scotty become a healthier triathlete and his results show what a difference becoming healthy from the inside out can make in a person’s life.
For anyone looking to make a change, Scotty says: Cut back on foods that contain processed sugars, soft drinks and juices. Check the sugar levels on the back of products when grocery shopping – if sugar is one of the first three ingredients, avoid the product. Cut back on pastas, grains and wheats. For the athletes: Replace protein powders with a ready-made smoothie and add maca powder and chia seeds for an even better mix! Also try these post-workout snacks: A couple tablespoons of chia seeds in a smoothie or a chia pudding Lean meat A boiled egg Nuts and seeds Avocado Scotty's 'why' is undisputedly the feeling of getting up in the moring and beating the sun up and getting home before everyone else is awake. He say's it's like a secret from the rest of the world. 'You haven't lived a day until you start one before the sun comes up' says Scotty.
Scotty, with thanks to T:Zero Sports Management, would like to acknowledge his sponsorship team for their ongoing support: The team at Kunara Organic Marketplace, Michael Baker at Custom Bike Fit, Brooks Running AU, Champion System, Razz at Hands of Knowledge, Clif Bar AU, T:Zero Multisport, Farrell Pools and Glen (and Ciro) at Star Swim Coaching.

Springtime Fun: The Fithoop Way!
WHY MEN’S FITNESS with Richard Fogarty
Spring cleaning your mind and body gives your whole perspective on life a fresh clean feeling! Coming out of the winter months it’s important to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. Unfavourable habits can creep in during the colder months. Sometimes it’s the things we eat, perhaps negativity has crept in or even too many coffees have been added to our daily rituals. Whatever it is, spring is a great time to refocus our habits.
Nichola is a UK rep qualified personal trainer and Pilates instructor, with several years experience running personal training and health clubs. She has taught several fitness classes including Spin, Aqua, Metafit, Pilates, Stability ball, Jog group and Power hoop. Her company Vito Fitness was also involved in the corporate health sector, helping companies to achieve their Healthy Working Lives award and also ran successful after-school activity classes for the Scottish government’s Active Schools program. Her health and fitness journey started when, after having four children and gaining a few pounds, her self-esteem plummeted. With a consistently positive attitude and iron will, she took matters into her own hands. Nichola now looks back on her ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos with pride. Why do people choose her classes and training methods?
When we think of refocusing, it’s obvious to consider ourselves first. There’s a reason we are told to fit our own oxygen masks before helping others during the inflight safety briefing on an aircraft. If we are not on top of our game, then we are probably not in the best form for those loved ones around us.
Because she’s normal! She knows that some days you just don’t feel like exercising. That child birth, illness, injury or even lifestyle sometimes wreak havoc on your body and that it takes professional care to manage this. She recognises that we’re all great at some things and rubbish at others, and that some days every joint aches and you feel like you’re getting old before your time.
Another aspect of spring cleaning the mind and body however, is also to pay some attention to the external things in our lives. For example, our children, wives, partners etc. When we start to set our mindset into the spring cleaning mode, it’s a great opportunity to sometimes change everything we’ve been doing.
Let Nichola’s knowledge, qualifications and skill be the guiding hand that helps you, shows you how to train correctly and gives you that extra push to be the best version of yourself that you can be. YOU WILL ENJOY IT!
This can create a catalyst for change. Bring motivation, inspiration and empowerment and a new lease of life, which going forward benefits not only ourselves, but everyone around us.
Nichola’s classes are diverse and different – she has the only studio on the Sunshine Coast to offer you Fithoop. This is a weighted hula hoop class with a difference. This class is a fun cardio, Pilates and weights session.
When we go through this spring cleaning, our bodies and minds shout to the world, “I can, I will, I must!” Less sugar, more fruit Less meat, more veggies Less soda, more water Less worry, more sleep LESS WORDS, MORE ACTION Say it with me – I AM PUMPED! Four years ago Julie Sunderland decided to turn her life around. Battling with fluctuations in her weight had been an everyday reality and she decided enough was enough. Why Fitness Magazine had the pleasure of chatting with her to discuss life, fitness and an exciting new business. Julie was never much of a sporting fanatic. Growing up in a family of four, she was always the ‘artsy’ one and never really enjoyed physical activity. This dislike for sport and exercise lead to a childhood plagued with body issues. Julie and her family moved very regularly and every two or three years would find herself in another part of New South Wales. Throughout high school Julie continued to battle with her weight. After trying many diets, none that seemed to help her lose weight, Julie gave up and decided to accept the way she was. Eight years ago, Julie moved to the Sunshine Coast with her husband Glen and two of her kids, Flynn and Rowan. Since the move, she has had two more children, Poppy and Leo. Four years ago she came across a picture of herself and thought, “I need to make a change so I am still here for my kids in 10 years time. Someone cannot make the decision for you, it's something you have to do for yourself" says Julie. Joining a gym and finding herself in foreign territory, Julie was initially anxious around her personal trainer Marty. Four years on, he is now one of her best friends. They started 14 ISSUE 15
with a 10 week boot camp challenge. At the halfway mark, soaked in sweat and tears, Julie was faced with a make or break moment. She continued on with the training and to her surprise, it paid off when she won the challenge! After years of battling body issues and low self-esteem, this triumph came as a real confidence boost for her. Following the challenge Marty went on to establish CrossFit Caloundra and once again Julie felt the pangs of fear of the unknown creep in. Surprising herself, she fell in love with the place and her thoughts that she would be ‘the fat kid in the class’ again quickly subsided. CrossFit gave Julie a fitness alternative she loved and she discovered a talent for weightlifting. This newfound passion for CrossFit set Julie on the path to become a CrossFit trainer. With hard work and determination Julie passed her CrossFit certification, completed a weightlifting coaching course and is now in the process of obtaining a certificate in personal training. Julie has lost 33 kilograms since she began her journey with CrossFit, and is now ranked 10th in the OliTek National Masters League 40-44 age group for weightlifting. Heavily involved in CrossFit, Julie had been on the search for wrist wraps – a

NewHorizons The Deck at Kawana Surf Club will officially be opened at 11am on September 21st and everyone is welcome to attend. Boasting enviable views of the magnificent Pacific Ocean, The Deck is the first expansion at the surf club that moves up-stairs and promises to be a very popular venue for both local patrons and visitors to the friendly club. The building of The Deck has an added benefit of creating a usable space below it which will be the new beer garden for the surf club. Both The Deck and beer garden will be able to be closed off from the elements, or opened up to allow cool sea breezes to relax and rejuvenate its patrons. Kawana Surf Club is one of the smaller clubs on the Sunshine Coast and doesn’t get the same degree of tourism patronage that many of the other local clubs attract. The club sees itself as very much part of the Kawana community and focuses on attracting locals as much as it can. One thing you can guarantee is that

Club president Kane Domio said “Our club has always seen itself as a strong part of our local Kawana community and so we strive to create a welcoming presence and sense of belonging for our valued patrons. Building The Deck is seen as a natural expansion for us to better look after the wants of our community and to help make the club an attractive and unique venue.”
Kane said, “The Kawana Surf Club is great for people as young as five through to well past retirement age to pitch in across the various areas of lifesaving. Our local Nipper program is a terrific way for families and kids from five to fourteen to become surf-aware. From fifteen they can enter the ranks of the lifesavers and there are a wide variety of surf sports they can choose from to keep them fit and healthy.”
Kane continued, “With the opening of The Deck we will be also launching a new functions kit catering to small groups of a handful of people up to large events of hundreds of guests. This kit is available now for anyone with a special family event or corporate function.” The main purpose of the Kawana Surf Club is lifesaving. Between the club house and the variety of lifesaving
The club is also home to the Kawana Waters RSL Sub-branch. The surf club and RSL have shared a warm and fruitful relationship at the club house for many years. Many of the RSL members also act as radio operators for the surf patrols so there is a deep connection and respect across all age groups at this vibrant and vital club.

FITNESS IS BUSINESS with Jen Forster
BETTER FITNESS HABITS = BETTER BUSINESS HABITS Over the past twenty weeks, our business networking group trained diligently for the recent Tough Mudder which was held here on the Sunshine Coast. I got the prestigious job of leading this group of outstanding businessmen and women, week in and week out, at various locations all over the coast. There were some strict rules put in place, including a 30 burpee penalty for being late for training. Week after week the team became stronger, fitter, and more and more pumped about taking on the renowned event. And in true Hollywood style, the

weather gods decided to turn on the coldest and wettest day of the year. Our 15 strong team was not deterred. Each and every one of them soldiered on through the 18km of mud, through the driving rain and eventually for some, had to be shrouded in space blankets to stave off hypothermia!
and how many businesses there are. Why not get your workmates together, choose an event, hire a trainer for a weekly session and watch the productivity, communication and energy of your office soar! Managers, are you reading this?
The best part of the whole twenty weeks, including the event, was the trust, connection, comradery, confidence and team work that ran through the veins of each of us. We were no longer just colleagues; we were ‘brothers in arms.’
I asked Jeremy Kann, General Manager of Tough Mudder Australasia, what he thought and he said, “At the end of the day it’s not a race – it’s about pushing yourself and your team mates to achieve something special as a team. We hope that this sentiment is something that Aussies can carry with them on and off the Tough Mudder course.”
It got me thinking about how many events we have on the Sunshine Coast
I absolutely agree. So which event will you and your colleagues set your sights on?

feature The concept of spring cleaning has been around for a long time. We spring clean our homes, our wardrobes and our gardens, while the most important part of our lives continues to accumulate filth year after year. Our lives, mind and body, would last a lot longer if we were to apply the same spring cleaning philosophy to them as we do to our environs. My brother lives with his wife and daughter in a very large house in South NSW, from which he also operates a vibrant business producing, stocking and selling non-hybrid, non-GMO, heirloom vegetable seeds. We spent several days last week skiing together in the Australian Alps. Yesterday I told him that my wife and I will be spending a night at his place before returning to Queensland. Well, he panicked, to say the least. When we arrived, the house was spotless. However, my brother told us that he’d spent the entire day cleaning up in preparation for our visit. He added that the exercise of tidying up his home and office had motivated him beyond words. He felt fresh, revitalised and energised. His mind was bubbling with new ideas and exciting prospects. Most people would have enjoyed a similar experience at some stage of their lives. It feels good when we clean up our surroundings. How much more when we clean up our bodies? In spite of our hightech elimination systems, our bodies accumulate toxic waste in fatty and organ tissue. Day after day, week after week, we are exposed to pollutants – chemicals in our food and household products, chlorine and fluoride in our water, smog and fumes, cosmetics, off-gassing from synthetic products, new carpet and building materials, petrochemicals, organic solvents, pesticides and heavy metals. Even the fillings in our teeth can provide a steady source of toxic mercury which accumulates in the brain, organs and fatty tissue. I’ve heard it said that if cannibals were to consume some of the people in our society, they would die from chemical poisoning. Some years ago I visited a university in India that specialised in agriculture. For many years the students had been using chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers to produce huge crops of vegetables. They had no modern machinery, so everything
was done by hand. In time the soil became so toxic that mutations started to appear in the vegetables. Many of the students became ill and some developed cancer and other terminal diseases. The entire agriculture project had to be closed down. A professor of organic farming was flown in from Zimbabwe to assess the situation and advise whether or not the soil could be healed. Initially he tested soil from various parts of the farm. He concluded that, in its present state, the soil posed a grave danger to human life. He advised the university to bring in truckloads of wood charcoal from local timber mills and plough it into the soil, while saturating the soil with water. For eight months the farm was dressed with charcoal as hundreds of trucks dumped their loads. Charcoal absorbs up to eighty times its own volume in poisons, so the project proved to be a great success. The soil was continually tested until there was no trace of toxic chemicals. The professor then educated the students in the practice of organic farming. A worm farm was established and composting was introduced. Areas were set aside to grow nitrogen-rich greens for mulch. The results were nothing less than amazing. Not only did the soil produce perfect crops, but the spirit of the students improved immensely. I was very privileged to meet the professor and see with my own eyes the results achieved by spring-cleaning the soil. Many years ago a young, depressed cotton farmer came to our health retreat presenting multiple symptoms of disease. Her skin was covered in an irritating rash. Her lungs were producing excessive mucous and her digestive system was a mess, to say the least. It was obvious that her occupation had exposed her to chemicals and that she needed an urgent spring clean. For several days she fasted on protein drinks made with whey protein concentrate, organic eggs and water. The albumin component of protein mobilises fat-soluble poisons, while the fat in the eggs ensures effective elimination via the liver. Healthy raw eggs are one of the most effective natural detox agents known to man. This method of detoxification addresses toxins stored in the fat without compromising muscle integrity. When one fasts on juices or water alone, muscle wastage
occurs first in order to provide the body with essential proteins. Treatments for this cotton farmer consisted of daily steambaths, lymphatic drainage, clay wraps and wet sheet wraps. Each day a therapist would wrap the young lady in an icy wet sheet with a warm woollen blanket wrapped around the outside. She would rest in this contrast cocoon for one hour, after which she would be washed. After each treatment the stained sheets reeked of chemicals. They actually had to be destroyed. Our therapist became ill from exposure to the poisons coming out of the girl’s body, so she, too, needed a spring clean in time. The result achieved by our agrarian friend was amazing. Not only did all her physical symptoms disappear, but the girl’s personality revived. She was no longer depressed; in fact, she once again became the vibrant person she’d been in her teens. The relationship between the body and the mind is intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathises. Many people come to our retreat for a spring clean, simply because they feel toxic. However, it never ceases to amaze me how many of our guests experience an emotional release once the toxins are eliminated. In a study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from ten babies born in August and September 2004 in hospitals in the USA. Tests revealed a total of 287 chemicals in the group. The umbilical cord blood of these ten children, collected by the Red Cross after the cord was cut, harboured pesticides, consumer product ingredients and wastes from burning coal, gasoline and garbage. Of the 287 chemicals detected, 180 are known to cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. Our environment is indeed toxic, causing the symphonic language of the human organism to go out of tune. Just like a musical instrument needs regular tuning, so our bodies and minds need time set aside every year to detox the system and finetune the mechanisms that guarantee our health and happiness. www.lvs.com.au WHY FITNESS 19

spring Tip Pardon the pun, but try training to improve your spring with plyometrics. Exercises like jumping, bounding and hopping can improve your body’s elasticity, which is its ability to generate and reduce force – a pretty fundamental requirement for everyday function at any level. These fun and dynamic exercises are great for improving stability, mobility, strength, power and dynamic balance. It’s best to include them in small doses following a good warmup, but before your main training block.
Gym/Studio Owners Contact me for a no-obligation consultation to help answer questions like this: Does the current equipment offering match my clientele? Is my team fully utilising every piece of equipment? Is there new equipment available that may better suit my facility? When was the last time we undertook team education or group learning? A Great Success!
The Sunshine Coast Sports Federation, along with the Sunshine Coast Council, welcomed home our Commonwealth Games athletes on Friday 8 August at the Maroochy RSL. Over 100 people turned up to congratulate them on their efforts at the recent Glasgow Games.
A special surprise presentation was made to Jim Achurch, a local Nambour athlete who won a gold medal in the javelin at the 1954 Commonwealth Games. He was made a Legend of the Sunshine Coast Sports Awards and was presented with the Bob Tisdall medallion on the evening by Bob’s wife.
The Minister for Sport, Steve Dickson, gave a rousing congratulatory speech and the Deputy Mayor presented each athlete with a plaque to commemorate the event. MC Benny Pike interviewed past Commonwealth and Olympic Games athlete Julie McDonald, who was the Sports Federation guest for the evening.
We’d like to thank the Maroochy RSL and Sunshine Coast Council for their sponsorship and support for this event as well as all the athletes who attended, including Jody Kenny, Tessa Wallace, Remy Fairweather, Melanie Schlanger and Taylor McKeown. Well done! You’re all great ambassadors for your sport.
Has the humble treadmill fallen out of favour? Go into any gym or fitness facility these days and you’ll almost certainly see a treadmill or two sitting idle and lonely – while gym goers and trainers are busy whipping ropes up and down, busting it out on spin bikes, jumping up and down on boxes or even leaving the gym via the front door to do a lap of the block, only to return again and go on with the next exercise. Have we really determined that the ‘tready’ is no longer useful, or are we in need of some inspiration and education? While variety and diversity are keys to an engaging and progressive training plan, the one piece of equipment that we have relied on for so long to provide a safe and effective cardiovascular stimulus is being left out in the cold. As we battle against sensory overload with new technology and training equipment, we are suffering from ‘quick start syndrome’ with treadmills. We jump on and just press the quick start option and walk or jog away with no real plan or intention. Let’s bring some love back for the treadmill, to provide some value for clients and members and to justify to owners of gyms and fitness centres across the world why we insist treadmills must be installed from opening day. There must be a reason, right?
Dean Harding SUMMIT FITNESS EQUIPMENT
First and foremost, your walking and running gait is the most fundamental movement pattern of the human body. So if you or your clients are not doing it, then start now! Treadmills provide a safe, consistent, measurable and non-intimidating environment to facilitate this pattern, giving the trainer the ability to assess and monitor imbalances or tendencies and track performance and progress in real time. Did you know many treadmills have built-in assessment protocols? So try them out and look to include them in your client assessments.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dean Harding has been in fitness club management, performance coaching and studio ownership both in Australia and the UK for over 10 years. He is a fitness industry presenter and educator, sports performance coach and brand manager, with the skills to provide an integrated equipment and education solution for your facility – whatever the size or shape. Dean provides a consultancy service to assist in selecting, sourcing, financing, integrating and educating staff on equipment in your facility.
The functionality of treadmills has increased hugely in recent times with more programming options than ever before – machines that incline to brave new heights, some that even decline to replicate going down a hill, non-powered curved treadmills that require 30 per cent more energy output, ones that can measure force output – the list goes on. While that’s all great, have you ever considered just strapping on a weighted vest as a form of increased intensity? Education and knowledge provide the basis for confident and effective use of any equipment, treadmills especially. So do you really know and understand the capabilities of the treadmills you use? Go right now and jump on the closest treadmill and look through the program options, choose one and just experience it. For we can’t truly prescribe what we have not yet understood. Then go back and work your way through every single program on that treadmill, not all at once though, until you have personally experienced and understood the program options and capabilities of this incredibly versatile piece of equipment. Who knows, maybe the humble treadmill might just come back into favour.
Are you and your team getting the most out of your treadmills?
Do you just press ‘quick start’ to go? Do you only use the ‘incline’ function? Do you just jog or walk? Do you utilise the ‘inbuilt’ fitness testing to track your clients’ progress?

Hypoxi Fitness Training:
Working Smarter Not Harder Belle McDonald from Hypoxi Health & Fitness discovered hypoxi when she was looking for a career that helped people to not only look great, but feel good from the inside out. Now she assists people in reaching their weight loss goals. Belle’s business partner Sharon is also a fully qualified Personal Trainer with over 25 years’ experience in the fitness Industry. She is passionate about health and has completed extensive studies in advanced nutrition. For many people, losing weight is not as simple as following a healthy diet and exercising. When cellulite and those excess kilos on the bum, tum, hips and thighs just won’t budge, the team at Hypoxi Health & Fitness Cotton Tree are here to help. Hypoxi is wrongly perceived as being a miracle beauty product or magic bullet that is a quick fix for weight loss. Hypoxi is a tailored workout program in an advanced machine that uses vacuum and compression while you exercise to help target fat in those stubborn areas. Every hypoxi session boosts the effects of a regular workout, so that clients get slimmer and smoother in those problem areas faster than regular exercise. The major benefit to using the hypoxi system is that during the gentle exercises the vacuum and compression artificially increases circulation, stimulating the body to respond more rapidly. The 30 minute workouts are easy and completely natural.
Belle McDonald
Belle, Sharon and the team combine hypoxi workouts with nutritional education and support to help clients to achieve their best weight loss results. Belle says they provide their clients with information on what’s appropriate to eat, what’s off limits, the hidden sugars, salts and other bad things in food and the different times of the day to eat to ensure a healthy metabolism. Belle says by doing the hypoxi workouts and eating the right foods clients can literally lose a dress size in one month, an accomplishment she has seen many of her clients achieve. Results usually vary between 18 to 23cm in a four week period, but there have been exceptional circumstances where one client lost 36cm in a month. The hypoxi system is not just for those looking to lose weight. Anybody experiencing problems when exercising, whether joint, impact or muscle pains, can benefit from hypoxi’s healing effect, caused by increased circulation allowing oxygenation to the tissues. It can also assist athletes and sports people in rehabilitation and recovery from lactic acid build-up. Belle’s advice to those who have hit a wall in their weight loss journey: Increase your water intake Make sure you’re getting the right nutrition Increase or change up your exercise program

Triathlon Matters with David Chick | Allez Sport Mooloolaba
TRIATHLON: IT REALLY HASN’T CHANGED MUCH! Triathlon, like all sports, attracts a wide range of competitors from different backgrounds. Increasingly, however, the sport has been said by some to have taken on an elitist persona, driven in part by its own success. Sports companies, bike makers and race organisers have increasingly raised the bar on their products and event offerings. Consequently, there have been a number of people marginalised out of the sport, put off by the financial imposts of equipment and entry fees in order to compete. Whilst it’s nice to have the latest and greatest technical gear which triathlon is known for, the sport remains essentially the way it was originally conceived – putting three basic endurance sports together to create an endurance challenge. It’s raw in its essence – swim, bike and run. Most people can do all three sports well before they ever consider doing a triathlon. If you look at the Hawaii Ironman winning times of Mark Allen and Paula Newby Fraser in 1992, over 20 years ago, their winning times have only been beaten twice since in Hawaii Ironman World Championships. Admittedly, they were probably the best ever male and female triathletes, but I find it incredible that with the advances in bike technology, nutrition, training techniques etc and so many thousands more people doing the sport, these two athletes’ times would still be good enough to win this race almost every year since. Ultimately, this indicates to me that it’s more about the human component and less about the science and technology when it comes to the crunch. So don’t despair – you’re a long way towards the finish line, no matter what you ride! Don’t get me wrong though – I still like my aero helmet!

So are all of our programs!
SPRING CLEAN YOUR MIND AND BODY Have you noticed the early signs of spring in the air? While the temperature may still be cool, birds are nesting and early bloomers like bottle brush and acacia are speckling our Sunshine Coast bushland. There is a rhythm to nature’s seasons that guide both flora and fauna. This rhythm tells the ecosystems when to sleep and when to wake. Now is the time we heed the call of nature and spring clean our routines, thoughts and ideas. This year, instead of doing the usual spring program, why not try something new? Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. No two springs are the same, so this year, why not try a new tactic? If you were full of energy last spring only to fade into poor habits by winter, perhaps it’s time to seek out a different tack. Nature is at its most active restarting the cycle of life and growth, and shedding redundancies to make way for the new. Exercise produces great positive impacts both chemically and physically. The mere act of just getting outside for a walk lets us see the changing seasons around us. There are a myriad of benefits to getting our lungs working a bit harder, getting some vitamin D and looking into the distance rather than the computer screen. This is an opportune time to spring clean your thought processes. Rather than finding reasons to postpone jobs like cleaning, getting some exercise or cooking a good meal, put some spring in your step and do it sooner rather than later. If you’re a list writer, make a list so you can tick off what you have done in the day and celebrate each achievement. Now is also a great time to take a good look at your body and lifestyle. How much time do you give your health in a day? Are your waking hours doing you good? Try swapping one hour of TV for one hour of being active. You don’t need to miss your favourite show if you plan around it. Try some new, positive activities that are good for you. Consider it a spring clean for your mind and body.

Digital Marketing Matters with Clark Marshall | Blue Dog Digital Marketing
SPRING CLEAN YOUR WEBSITE Every business wants to be on the first page of Google in their industry, and everyone is always looking for the one golden step that they can do to make it happen. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works! Google’s job is to ensure that the experience of the person who is searching for a topic/ product/service is the best it can be. So what you need to do, among lots of other things, is to constantly be updating your website with fresh new content. This makes it interesting for potential clients and return clients, and Google likes this. Now that spring is here, what better time to take a fresh look at your website and think about giving it a new look? The easiest way you can do this is to update the main images on your home page. But don’t stop there! Update images throughout your whole website if you can. Next, put on a pair of your customers’ shoes, take a walk through your website and actually read what they would read. Is your content interesting? Is it current? Does it entice them to want to know more about you and delve deeper into the website? If you don’t like what you read, it’s time to update your content too. Another thing to do is to check all of your links throughout your website. Due to the rapid rate at which businesses, websites and blog posts come and go, some of the links that you have to articles on other websites, or even to your own, may not be available now. Google will penalise you for having broken links, so get those fixed quick smart. Last but not least, keep it up! Don’t wait until next spring to update your website – schedule it into your calendar to add something new each month. It can be an article, a blog post, an image or a testimonial. This will grow your website to rank more organically than almost anything else.
Google’s job is to ensure that the experience of the person who is searching for a topic/product/ service is the best it can be. TRAINING HARD, YET NOT GETTING THE RESULTS YOU DESERVE? COULD YOU BE PROTEIN DEFICIENT?
But I workout every day?
Exercise is crucial for good health, but the body is reliant on a few other things to build muscle, lose fat and produce energy. Three of those things are diet, protein absorption and good nutrients. With low dietary protein or poor absorption, your muscles can’t grow or repair. Your muscles are the engine of your body that burn calories – the more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn and the faster your metabolism will become. For anyone who is training, you require at least three to six protein meals daily and you also need to be absorbing it through the gut. Absorption of protein is often taken for granted. If you’ve been ill or you’re a little older, there may be a lack of bacteria in the gut necessary to form a complete amino acid chain, which is where a lot of your proteins are manufactured. You should check this if you’re weight training and notice no change in the muscle, or can’t lose weight. You may also notice mood changes, as protein is required to make your brain neurotransmitters, hormones, motivation and energy. Balancing fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the diet makes all the difference in weight loss and muscle growth, as too much of one compared to another can influence your production of insulin. Insulin will send a message to your body to either gain or lose weight. Make sure your percentages of each food group is correct, while keeping your portion sizes adequate, though not more than you require. Your body will tell you when you’re not eating enough, but will not often tell you when you’re eating too much. Good nutrients along with proteins produce dopamine in the brain, further making adrenaline, so you have the energy required to do the exercise needed to achieve the desired changes in your body. Dopamine is a brain neurotransmitter that controls motivation, happiness, drive, libido and energy. Dopamine is made from tyrosine, an amino acid, as well as B6, folate, zinc, magnesium, B complex, vitamin C and iron. Depression is very common in today’s society, making it hard to get out there and exercise. Both dopamine and serotonin deficiencies are common causes of depression. Serotonin is also increased in production when you improve your protein absorption and nutrient intake. If depression has been a concern for you, it may be another sign that you have poor protein and nutrient absorption.
With low dietary protein or poor absorption, you muscles cant grow or repair! Are you noticing: No change in muscle definition Can't lose weight Mood changes Lacking motivation and energy Balancing proteins, carbohydrates and fats in the diet makes all the difference to weight loss and muscle growth!

Body Matters with Dr Alison Jamieson | COZmedics
I’ve trained every way and tried everything!
I DON’T LOVE MY LOVE HANDLES! Do you exercise two to three times per week and feel like you’re in great shape? Do you watch what you eat and yet still have at least one area of the body where fat deposits and just won’t budge? You’re certainly not alone. Most of us, no matter what our age, seem to be plagued by something. In fact, the most common areas men seem to be concerned with are the sides of the abdomen often referred to as ‘love handles,’ closely followed by the ‘man boobs,’ the abdomen and back. Stubborn areas of fat are not exclusive to men and their love handles. Women also seem to be concerned with areas such as bingo arms, back fat around the bra strap, thighs and the abdominal area. And for all those who can eliminate that trouble spot with diet and exercise, there are just so many of us who, due to genetics, will never be able to budge it. CoolSculpt is the ideal treatment for these stubborn areas, because whether male or female and regardless of your age, you’re considered a good candidate if you’re 5-15kg within your goal weight. This treatment is not designed to remove massive amounts of fat – it acts more like a body refiner, shaping and contouring the body.
SAY GOODBYE TO STUBBORN FAT WITHOUT SURGERY, DOWNTIME OR HOURS OF TRAINING!
How it works CoolSculpt is a non-invasive, clinically proven procedure that selectively reduces unwanted fat cells using a patented cooling technology. Cooling is applied, causing the fat cell to undergo apoptosis. The fat cells die by apoptosis and begin to collapse. Macrophages digest and consume the dead fat cells and lipids and are cleared through the lymphatic system and finally to the liver, where they are processed as waste. When dead cells are naturally removed, this gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The result is a noticeable and measurable reduction of fat in the treated area, and once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. The rise of CoolSculpting for men With the rising additions of minimally invasive procedures, more men have been seeking out cosmetic help to slim down their bodies. Men have been gravitating toward this procedure not only because there are no knives involved, but also because there is little to no recovery time and can be worked into a busy schedule. CoolSculpt facts The average love handle treatment is two hours long Two treatments can remove as much as two inches from the waist Results can be seen after one treatment Treatments are comfortable and well-tolerated Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting has no downtime CoolSculpting is ideal for targeted and effective fat loss With over one million CoolSculpting treatments performed worldwide, people everywhere are getting a better view of themselves, thanks to the one-of-a-kind CoolSculpting procedure.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr Alison Jamieson has over 25 years experience in cosmetic medicine and leads a team of highly trained medical professionals who provide the safest and most advanced options in facial and body rejuvenation.
When it comes to your reflection, you can be your own toughest critic. Even that favourite outfit can feel off-limits because of stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise. But the CoolSculpting® treatment effectively shapes what you see without surgery or downtime, so you’ll look great. Clothes fit better, feel better, look better.

SPRING INTO SHAPE WITH GROUP FITNESS! OMG! Spring is here! NOW is the time to jump start your body after winter hibernation. If you’re suffering from injuries, excess weight or cellulite - a sluggish lymphatic system may be playing a role. Expel built up toxins by stimulating your lymphatic system. EXERCISE is one of the best ways to achieve this as it ensures the lymph system flows properly – it gets your heart pumping, increases blood flow and eliminates toxins faster! Another excellent way to cleanse your lymphatic system is to clean up your diet. A healthy nutritional lifestyle produces less waste for your lymph system to clean up, reducing your chances of congestion. If you’re struggling to find the inspiration to exercise why not consider group training! A group exercise class is a fun way to get back into fitness as the group environment is motivating, social and FUN! A good trainer will provide loads of variety each session, so you’re continuously doing something new and fresh each workout. Exercising this way also ensures your cardiovascular system and muscles are worked the most efficiently, therefore excellent results are achieved FASTER. Having the added benefit of a qualified trainer who plans safe and effective training sessions ensures you’re bound to come back for more as workout time flies when you’re having fun! Group training sessions are often held outdoors so the benefits of exercising in the fresh air and simply being able to disconnect from technology and connect with nature for a good solid hour of your day will do wonders for your body, mind and soul.

OVERCOMING A POOR RACE You’ve trained for months, logging scores, or even hundreds of miles to prepare for your goal race. Then the big day arrives and something disastrous happens – you get the flu. You wake up to a freak hailstorm, heat wave, or pouring rain. A killer muscle cramp stops you in your tracks. Your dreams of running a PB or qualifying for Boston evaporate. Maybe you don’t even reach the finish line. You’re disappointed, maybe even devastated. Was all that hard work really worth it? Of course it was, as long as you heed what went wrong. Not meeting a race goal doesn’t mean that the race is a failure. Sometimes you may even learn more from that bad race then the good one. It may be just the thing you needed to help you realise the obvious that others, or an article you read, warned you about. Getting into that mindset and being able to learn from the past and refocus on the future isn’t an easy task. 1. Immediately After When you invest so much into your training and don’t get the results you want, you have a right to be upset. Expressing your frustration should be part of your recovery process. Tennis Matters with Tyson Thompson | Tennis Queensland
Ready? Play.
TRAINING- TENNIS STYLE Over the past few articles I have given you the whys of tennis, so this month it’s the hows. Whether you are a beginner player or have been on the court many years, the time you put in off the courts is just as important as the time on the court. When approaching training as a beginner, you should have a process or routine and a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. Tennis is a sport that calls upon a whole range of muscle groups, movements and motor skills. Your training should target some, if not all of the areas below. FOOTWORK AND AGILITY Benefits for tennis: Helps you get in the best possible position to hit a shot. Improves your ability to react on court. Allows for good movement patterning and lower body motor skills, which helps with covering the court. Training tip. Ladder drills: Use a combination of footwork and stepping patterns. These will improve your coordination, engagement and foot movement. SPEED Benefits for tennis: Helps you get to the ball more quickly to then set up and execute shots. Encourages you to be more offensive and take control of a match. Makes you a better retriever. Training tip. Mimic areas of play that require speed: For example, sprints (for pushing off and retrieving shots) and agility ladder runs (for quicker, more economical footwork). CORE STRENGTH Benefits for tennis: A lot of power and movement generation, especially for a multi-directional sport like tennis, comes from the core. Aids in a better serve and execution of shots. Helps with injury prevention, especially lower back injuries, which are common among beginners. Training Tip. Pilates: Beginners should aim for a 30 minute session once a week; once you become more confident with the movements and engaging your core, you can progress to longer sessions (studios often offer 45-minute and 60-minute sessions as well) and more times per week.

But what if there was a mode of transport that was fun, got you fit and helped the environment get healthier…would you be in? If so, why not join 50,000 other Australians set to take part in a commuter revolution on October 15 for National Ride2Work Day. Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the event was an opportunity to start positive changes on the Sunshine Coast. “Across our region there are an increasing number of workplaces and districts that experience significant traffic congestion and parking problems. Get Your Head in Shape to Get Your Body in Shape
(the psychology behind the physiology)
WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper And I’m the solution.
Barking up the Wrong Tree For many years, maybe twenty, I’ve been of the opinion that the majority of people trying to lose weight, build muscle, increase fitness, improve their health or facilitate any kind of lasting physical transformation (‘lasting’ being the key term here) go about it the wrong way. Not all of course, but many. Which is kind of obvious and logical when you take a look at how many people don’t achieve what they set out to. I’ve also been of the opinion that many health and fitness experts get it wrong on some level. Including me, at times, over the years. I’m the Problem and the Solution As an ex-fattie, I learned long ago that mastering my body is largely a byproduct of mastering my mind and my emotions. In other words, when I get the internal stuff right, the external transformation tends to take care of itself. While things like diets, dumbbells, treadmills, heart-rate monitors, exercise programs and RDI’s are issues, they are not the issue. When it comes to creating forever results in my world (the common goal), I’m the issue. I’m the problem.
As a young trainer working on the gym floor, I came to realise that creating lasting physical change has almost nothing to do with the body and everything to do with the person inhabiting it. That is, the nonphysical controlling the physical. In many cases, the condition of a body (fit or unfit, fat or lean, healthy or unhealthy) is simply a consequence of the owner’s thinking, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and choices. Over time. Genetic Disposition vs Genetic Management When you meet me, for example, the body you see in front of you is largely a byproduct of my thinking, decisions, behaviours and habits. For the most part, the body I currently reside in has a little to do with my genetic disposition (what I’ve been given) and a lot to do with genetic management (what I’ve done with what I’ve been given). Same goes for you. Let’s be totally honest, practical and courageous for a moment. Despite an ever-increasing range of weight-loss, health-improving and body-transforming products, programs, diets and gizmos, our
population is getting fatter. As a group, we’re not healthier. And seemingly, not smarter. What we’re doing is not working and you don’t need a degree or any special qualification to figure that out. All you need is a pair of eyes. Maybe We’ve Missed the Point? Coming from a gym owner, exercise scientist and alleged fitness expert, I’m gonna ruffle a few feathers when I say that when it comes to the process of transforming a body forever, there’s too much emphasis on diet, lifestyle and exercise (all the practical physiological stuff) and too little emphasis on the psychological stuff that drives (or, as is often the case, doesn’t drive) all the physiological and practical variables. Information isn’t transformation, knowing isn’t doing and resources aren’t answers. They’re just resources. If the total solution to our ever-present obesity epidemic was more information, more diets, more gyms, more gurus, more weight-loss centres, more health retreats and more websites, we’d all be trim, taut and terrific. Take a look around and you’ll discover that we’re currently up to our necks in weight-loss resources, transformational tools – and obesity. Get your head where it needs to be and your body will follow.

why... LEMONS?
Ask us
why?
This bright yellow fruit is a favourite all over the world and a kitchen staple everywhere. Not only do lemons add flavour to many dishes, they also boast a lot of health benefits. These health benefits have been known for thousands of years – ancient Egyptians believed that eating lemons and drinking lemon juice protected them against a variety of illnesses. Here are some reasons why lemons should be part of your diet:
Lemons boast immune-boosting powers in the form of vitamin C, citric acid, calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, pectin and limonene that will speed up your recovery from a cold in no time. Lemon juice is used as an aid in weight-loss, working as a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Feeling sleepy? Lemons can stimulate brain activity. A lemon a day can keep everything moving on schedule by stimulating the liver to produce bile, an important fat emulsifier.
why... SUNSHINE?
We all know that even a couple of minutes out in the sun can improve our mood significantly, but we don’t often realise the many other benefits Vitamin D can have on our health and wellbeing.
Strong bones – Healthy eyes – Boosts immunity – Fights obesity – Lowers blood pressure – A better nights sleep – Vitamin D boosts calcium absorption for strong bones, which means you’re less likely to develop bone diseases, fractures and osteoporosis.
The citric acid found in lemons balances pH, helping to alkalise your body.
Protects eye health – vitamin D has been linked to lower incidence of cataracts as well as a lowered risk of macular degeneration as you age.
Lemon is a great oral cleanser and will leave your breath with a fresh taste and smell.
Boosts immunity – researchers believe that vitamin D is for the proper function of your body’s immune system
Adding more lemons to your diet is easy. Simply add freshly-squeezed lemon juice to your water, have a cup of hot water with lemon juice first thing in the morning and add lemon juice to salad dressings, fruit salads and shakes.
Improves metabolism and fights obesity – several studies show correlation between sun exposure and an increase in metabolism. L ower blood pressure – the warmth of the sun can improve circulation A dose of sunshine during the day will help you to a better night’s sleep.
why... FOAM ROLLERS? A tool for lengthening and elongating muscles. Benefits are especially helpful for runners who often suffer from tight and fatigued muscles. Instead of simply lengthening the muscle, a foam roller massages muscles intensely, much like a massage from a massage therapist but without the cost. When used often and correctly, the foam roller can help runners avoid many sport-related injuries. Not a replacement for proper stretching, warming up or cooling down but can be used as a tool to limit soreness and tightness through increased blood flow and flexibility. Using your own body weight and agility, you roll specific muscle groups against a firm foam roller to mimic a deep, gliding massage. Cheap and can use it anywhere.

Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge Comes To The Sunshine Coast! Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge is a body transformation program that in the past few years has taken Australia by storm. The program is run in hundreds of locations across three countries – Australia, New Zealand and the USA – with tens of thousands of women reaping the results of following Ashy Bines’ eating plan and exercise guidance and participating in the group fitness sessions. On the Sunshine Coast the group fitness sessions are offered in two locations, Caloundra and Mooloolaba. Why Fitness Magazine chatted with Marnie Hirst (Caloundra) and Bec Seeman (Mooloolaba) to find out more about the Ashy Bines program, a business bringing women to fitness and fitness to women. Marnie Hirst is a personal trainer (at Goodlife Maroochydore) and a Pilate’s instructor. Marnie was inspired to become a PT to help other women overcome the fear of failure, embarrassment and lack of self esteem which can occur when changes take place after having children. Marnie has two children and personally experienced this, so fully understands how hard it can be to take the first step and get started. Marnie is offering a free 'let's get fit session' including a consultation, assessment and a personal training session worth over $175 to the first 10 why fitness readers that call and mention the article Bec Seemann is a life coach, personal trainer and has managed eight ABBBC rounds on the Sunshine Coast with over 70 girls in every challenge. ABBBC use multiple sessions to maintain quality in group training while giving the girls consistent feedback, creating one on one personal training service with the energy and vibe of group training. You also receive Ashy's clean eating guide when they sign up.
As well as be a part of weekly challenges and fortnightly check ins (weigh ins). ABBBC specialises in creating a supportive and loving environment for ALL women where they can all help one another achieve their goals, no matter how small or big! Marnie believes it’s the affordability of the Ashy Bines program combined with the variety of training and exercises, as well as exercising with a group of like-minded women, that creates the support network that brings ladies back to the program time and time again. There are three programs to choose from, each running for 12 weeks, with each program running back to back for 12 months. At the beginning of the challenge participants are given an Ashy Bines training singlet, bumper sticker and wrist band. Every program includes Ashy's clean eating guidelines and recipes. The Kick Start Pack includes three one-hour group sessions and access to the forum, support and weekly testing. For a small amount more you can chose the Step It Up Pack and get unlimited weekly sessions, access to the forum, support and weekly testing, plus a special midchallenge goal setting and nutrition meeting with one of your trainers. The Platinum Pack is a one year commitment and includes six one-hour group sessions, access to the forum, support and weekly testing. Members also receive exclusive information within the program and are provided with motivational nutrition talks throughout the challenge. Some group fitness sessions are lead by different trainers. Results from ABBBC range from weight loss, tone, definition and self-confidence, but it’s the building of self-confidence and friendships with the other women in the program that sets ABBBC apart from other body transformation programs.
For a limited time only, anyone who joins the Kick Start Program can automatically upgrade to a Step It Up Pack, allowing them to train unlimited days a week rather than three. First 25 only, so get in quick. Please quote SEPTWF when you call.
