editor’s note

EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster I love moving around the Sunshine Coast, meeting new people, hearing their stories and finding out what lights them up. Some of you may know about the small part of your brain called the RAS (Reticular Activating System). Its sole purpose is to search for evidence of that which you believe to be true. A good example is when you buy a new car and you suddenly see your car, the exact colour and model, everywhere. This issue is all about Sunshine Coast Champions and so for me, the word, people, quotes, inspiring stories, have been showing up everywhere. And I love it!

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live the world they have been given, rather than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It is a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

I have chatted with Blake Cochrane, Paralympic Gold Medal Breast Stroker and 2013 Senior Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year; Brendan Burkett another legendary Australian Paralympic Swimming Gold Medallist. Tim Whitburn who ‘accidentally’ found himself at Australian Mountain Biking Championships a week or so back and won his age group – instant Australian Champion! There have been generations of champions too, including the Dunn Family, who you can read about in this issue. Then there’s our very own Vickie Magic. Did you know that in high school, Vickie was a Queensland Champion, racing against decathlon champion, Glynis Nunn. One other Champion I caught up with was a gentleman by the name of Norm Phillips. Norm is a runner. He’s been a runner for about 30 years, 10km events, 5km events, marathons and these day’s he’s a regular at the Kawana Park Run. Now 30 years is a long time to commit to something, right? Well here’s the thing, Norm is 91 years old and he took up running when he was 60. To me the title of champion is not reserved for the best of the best. There is not a milestone or marker that we need to pass before we earn the title. To me a champion is someone who gives 100% to whatever it is that they choose to do. And they show up again and again and again, ready to do better than they did the day before. They know there will be setbacks but they keep moving forward anyway. I love that I get to live here on the Sunny Coast amongst so many incredible champions from all walks of ‘sport and fitness’ who I am discovering, do just that! Thank you to everyone who continues to support the magazine, I absolutely love what I do. I am especially excited about our new Mini Fitness Expo. It was a huge success last month and our next one is going to be even bigger! Check it out on page 2. It’s on April 26. Come along and find what lights you up! Yours in fun and fitness,

Top 10 Tips to Help you Become a

Local Fitness Champion by Henry Hound

pounds in the first few weeks, and met the challenge goal several weeks later.

You are eating right. You are exercising. You have stuck to your commitments to cleanse, and improve your mind, body, and spirit. Now it’s time to share your success and motivation with others. It’s great that you are getting and staying fit, but don’t stop there. Spread the word and inspire fitness throughout your friends, family, and community.

3Knowledge is Power

There are two ways to define the word ‘champion’. You can be a champion as in a winning professional athlete, and you can also champion a cause. Whether you are a professional trainer, or just someone who ‘gets it’ and would like to share, here are my Top Ten Ways to become a local Fitness Champion in both senses of the word!

4Go Green and Local

a Fitness 1Become Ambassador

See your hometown as a tourist does, and get fit in the process. Many coaches and professional trainers have combined getting fit with getting to know the local attractions. Organise fitness tours of the sites of your area. These could be walking, jogging, hiking, or more intensive ‘boot camp’ like workouts. Either way, it’s a great way to get people moving while experiencing some community pride at the same time.

2

Create a Community Challenge

Get with your mayor, local chamber of commerce, and/or other community leaders to create a community fitness challenge. In the US, personal trainer Linda Fondren challenged her hometown of Vicksburg, Mississippi to lose a combined 17,000 pounds in 17 days. More than 2500 residents rose to the occasion, losing a total of 15,000

Make sure you know the

recommended National Physical

Activity Guidelines for your community to see how much physical activity you should be getting on a daily basis, and encourage family, friends and co-workers to do the same.

Support local farmers markets,

organic growers, and other local access points to fresh fruits and vegetables. This is not only great for your own wellbeing; it’s good for the local economy.

or Join Your 5Create Neighbourhood Watch Joining a neighbourhood watch is a

great way to support your community, get to know your neighbours, get some exercise ‘on patrol’, while helping improve public safety, which is also part of your community’s health.

6

Plant Trees

Every town or neighbourhood

can get healthier with more trees. Trees not only improve the look of streets and intersections, they become habitats for wildlife, provide shade, and give off life giving oxygen. A day or two of planting is great for physical activity and community bonding.

7Volunteer

Become aware of any national

or regional fitness or health awareness days, supporting issues such as cardiovascular disease, or cancer screenings, and volunteer to help in any way you can.

8Lead by Example

This means not only living the healthy life you have chosen to lead, but being open and willing to talk to those around you about the choices you have made. Share your ups and downs, triumphs and failures. Be particularly willing to share some of the intimate things you have learned about yourself. This will help people relate to you as a person just like them, and can be far more motivating than some celebrity on TV.

9Have Fun and Show It Find every example you can to show how exercise and eating right can be pleasurable and even fun. Too many folks worry about what they have to give up to get fit. Instead, show them how eating right at local eateries can be just as satisfying as less healthy choices. Maybe partner with a local restaurant to hold a healthy cooking demonstration or workshop.

People 10Make Feel Good

Being a Fitness Champion means always seeing what is good in those around you, and making them feel good about themselves. Think about what you like about the people you associate with. Not only their physical attributes, but also whatever it is you admire about them. Be sure to tell them, sincerely and often. People may not recall what you have told them, but they will always remember the way you made them feel. Helping the people around you to get fit by being a local Fitness Champion will not only result in healthier neighbours, but also healthier neighbourhoods, and that is good for everyone in the community, in mind, body and spirit.

WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray

This month’s ‘home grown champion’ theme provides the perfect opportunity for me to talk about our many wonderful Sunshine Coast events. While more and more fantastic events are coming to the region as part of national or international tours – think Tough Mudder, Color Run, Ironman 70.3 and the like – we have a range of Coast-based events to be very proud of. Among the most widely known are the Noosa and Mooloolaba Triathlons. You might be surprised how long they’ve been going. Noosa Tri turns 31 this year and Mooloolaba is in its 22nd year. They’ve gradually grown into iconic events which draw athletes from around the world and show off our region to massive audiences. As usual, Mooloolaba was a great success this year, and registrations for Noosa are open now. We’ve also got the Sunshine Coast Garden Expo, which started in 1985 and is a must for any green thumb. I’d bet you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who grew up here over the past 29 years and doesn’t remember going with Mum and Dad as a kid. This year’s event is on 11-13 July. The Noosa Food and Wine Festival started small in 2003 and has grown every year since, to attain international status, attract chefs from around the nation and the world, and be named as ‘one of the best food experiences in the country’. It’s on in May. There’s a lot of history behind the Pa and Ma Bendall Surf Classic, which turns 40 this year and was on in Caloundra over the Easter long weekend. July’s Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival is in its 47th year and the Etchells Australasian Winter Sailing Championships started in Mooloolaba 17 years ago. One of our newest home grown events is the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Run Festival. It’s quickly following in the footsteps of these other long-running, crowd-drawing events. 2014 is only its third year and with 8000 runners expected to take part, it’s set to be bigger and better than ever. Get your tickets now and start training for August 31. With most of these events still to come this year, mark them in your calendar now and go along – if not as a participant then as a spectator – to see just why they’re so popular. Pretty In Pink Bra

WALKATHON

Pretty In Pink Bra Walkathon will be running this amazing event for the third year in a row. It is a 5km or 10km walk along the beautiful Caloundra Beaches on the 4 May, in support of the McGrath Foundation’s mission to raise money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in community’s right across Australia and to increase breast cancer awareness in young women. The Sunshine Coast region can get involved by attending this event, dressing up in pink, decorating a pink bra, having some fun and purchasing McGrath merchandise. McGrath Foundation Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan, says the McGrath Foundation continues to be blown away by the support from Australian communities. This support goes a long way in helping the Foundation ensure every family in Australia experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse no matter where they live or what their financial circumstances. The Foundation believes they need 150 McGrath Breast Care Nurses to make this vision reality. Event organiser, Melinda Bingley, Owner of MAB Personal Training & Adventures says “she is super excited to once again turn the Caloundra foreshore pink and support the McGrath foundation”. Last year’s event raised over $5000 and she is hoping to double that amount this year. WHAT: 5km or 10km walk along Caloundra Beaches, everything pink, get the bra out too, women, men and the kids all welcome, includes brunch and finishes at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. WHERE: Caloundra Power Boat Club, 5km walkers turn around point Short Street, 10km walkers turn around point Kings Beach water fountain. WHEN: 4th May, 6:30am 10km walkers, 7:15am 5km walkers. WHY: To raise money (and eyebrows) for breast cancer, to get the community together in a positive way through being active and having lots of fun. A percentage of ticket sales will be donated to the McGrath Foundation. Cost: $30 Adult registration, $20 Children registration. If you are weighing yourself down with unhealthy food, you will feel sluggish and your performance levels may be poor. However, it isn’t just food that will help you power on. Regular exercise is another important ingredient to living well. y l i m a f d n a of food In 2014, BFresh will celebrate 21 years in business. This is a massive achievement for any business and even more so for what started as a quiet little fruit market, known then as the Warana Fruit Barn. Co-owners and siblings Belinda Wanless, Maryann Young and Anthony Bosma are the second generation of a family that set about creating a food store, like no other, on the Sunshine Coast. The store supports local farmers and produce growers, the community and most importantly the team that is at the very heart of BFresh. Why Fitness Magazine editor, Jen Forster, caught up with Belinda and discussed the journey, the evolution and the many successes of this fantastic small business.

sourced by Anthony and an ever expanding salad bar prompted a redesign of the Cafe. Maryann’s husband Craig bakes many of the cakes available at BFresh, he holds his grandmas’ recipes dear to his heart and takes much enjoyment in bringing fresh goodies for our local family to enjoy, especially the ever disappearing rock cake! Maryann and Craig’s daughter Lani, is also a foodie, she loves being part of the BFresh family, now helping her Aunty Bee create new menu items.

Back Row: Maryann Young and Anthony Bosma Front Row: Allanah Young and Belinda Wanless

For the BFresh family, food has always been an important part of life. The love and passion they share for delicious, wholesome food began with their parents Jim and Cathy Bosma. After a few years Jim and Cathy retired, paving the way for a new generation to bring to life each of their own ideas. Anthony continued on with the fresh produce while Maryann began fossicking through the many gourmet deli products available locally and in Australia. From that extensive journey the deli has become a local favourite for everything from the best quality sliced meats to handmade cheeses sourced locally and Australia wide. These products have been perfect to showcase the many local and handmade gourmet products that make up what BFresh is all about today. From all the inspiration gathered from the people who made their own special products BFresh began to make it their mission to be able show others how to enjoy these specialties that had been found and the Cafe was born, well sort of. The idea of a Cafe started to flow with the help of a newly installed coffee machine. With so many possibilities BFresh Cafe began serving up great coffee and fabulous muffins while using some of the many new products on Paninis from their much loved new deli range. With the encouragement of the locals, the Cafe grew and more new items began appearing every day. A juice bar was incorporated to take advantage of the beautiful fruit

Belinda recalls memories from her childhood where Anthony would drive around with their Dad, perched on the back of the truck while he did his fruit run from the local producers. She believes this early interaction with fruit has allowed her brother to become very knowledgeable about this area and it has benefited the store greatly. Even after 25 years of going to fruit sellers, he still holds his passion close to his heart and hand selects every product in the fresh range. BFresh has been a community project. It was founded from a family of foodies willing to listen to and answer the community’s needs. Belinda hopes to show everyone that caring for the environment and caring for yourself internally will result in the external world becoming a cleaner, more cared-for place. The team continue to assist in changing the eating habits of the community. Perhaps the most important ingredient in the BFresh success story is the BFresh team or family as they are referred. Every single person puts their own special touch into BFresh. Without their beautiful ‘family’ BFresh just wouldn’t be BFresh!

generations of sports and business on the sunshine coast

Rob Dunne is a fourth generation business owner on the Sunshine Coast. Sport and business truly run in his blood. Rob’s great-grandfather, E.C. Thomas Snr, was a boxing champion, a free trainer for self-defence on the Coast and genuinely a great man. A few of his other achievements include the creation of the first logging boat for the Maroochy River, the Kelki, and the opening of the very first funeral business, E.C. Thomas & Sons, on the Coast. Rob’s mother, Allison Dunne also carried these incredible traits and now they have been passed on to her son. Rob’s grandfather, E.C Thomas Jnr (known as Ted) was also a talented man. He was an athletic champion, a football star and a brilliant musician. When Ted was 19, he was selected to compete in the Olympic Games for triple jump. Unfortunately, this short-lived dream ended when he was diagnosed with polio. He was bedridden in hospital for 18 months and was left with a paralysed left arm, so could no longer compete. Ted chose to share his knowledge though, and went on to pursue a career in coaching. Three of his athletes represented Australia in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Ted’s passion for sport shone through even more when he was chosen to run through Nambour with the Olympic Torch for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Ted acted as an official for the athletics in the Brisbane Commonwealth Games as well. Rob’s mother, Allison Dunne, also received the athletic genes and was a champion. Coached by her father Ted, she spent many weekends on the track training in high jump, shot put, javelin and her specialty; discus. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Allison ran with the Olympic Torch through Alexandra Headlands. It was a particularly special moment as she ran past the spot her family had spread Ted’s ashes a few years prior. Allison is now a contractor for the aged care sector as a trainer and assessor. She is extremely passionate about creating a more holistic and caring environment for the elderly. Diversional therapist, counsellor and guest speaker are amongst her other career pathways. Rob Dunne walks in the footsteps of the three generations preceding him. These three have carved their names into the sporting and business arena on the Sunshine Coast over the last 100 years. Rob grew up here on the Sunshine Coast and has always loved sports. In his spare time, Rob would

Alison and Rob Dunne

While at school, Rob began work in a traineeship in sporting retail. The skills that run in his genes were bought out in no time. He understood the concepts of business comprehensively. He thoroughly enjoys helping others achieve their sporting goals and had a burning desire to fulfil the dream of owning his own business. Rob started Train Race Inspire (TRI) at Coolum Beach five months ago. With hard work and passion, Rob’s label is now being sold all around the world. He is already the largest stockiest for Olympic swim suits in Queensland and has tri-athletes wearing his tri-suits in the Kona Hawaiian ironman series. Rob has been nicknamed the Branding King by many of his clients, as his brand name Train Race Inspire is in great demand worldwide. Rob recently started a tri club at Coolum to help people achieve their goals. With the assistance of some brilliant trainers and a wonderful support team, Rob now has over 100 people in his tri club. To anyone with a dream and passion, he says, “Follow your heart and believe anything is possible. There will be speed bumps along the way but don’t make them into brick walls”. It would be fitting for Rob to continue the family tradition and run with the Olympic Torch when it next comes through the Sunshine Coast.

Michael Taylor talks

‘THE PERILS OF SALLY’ the Fitness Industry Worker (Contemporary Workplace Relations) The story so far: In the last edition of Why Fitness, we met Sally, a single mother employed on a part-time basis by a fitness centre. Sally had declined to change her usual rostered hours to work on Saturdays. A new development: Sally’s manager tried once more to get her to agree to work from 8am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. This time however, the ‘offer’ was couched in terms that, if Sally declined, she would be reduced to casual hours, without certainty of rostering. Her options were: 1. Accept the ‘offer’ of Saturday work, even though the cost of the additional child care would exceed the monies earned 2. Look elsewhere for an opportunity with another employer 3. Seek advice on her rights. Properly advised, Sally would be made aware that her employer was liable to uncapped damages under the General Protections provisions of the Fair Work Act. ABOUT MICHAEL TAYLOR Michael Taylor, Principal Consultant of HMT Consulting has 38 years experience in the area of Workplace Relations and played an integral role in the development of the Fitness Industry Award in 2010. FITNESS MAGIC with Vickie Magic

Becoming a Champion With this issue being about home grown champions, I thought I would share my champion story and what I believe it takes to be a champion. From the age of ten, I was a Queensland champion in both 800 and 1500 metres for track and field as well as cross-country. I just loved running; I loved the feeling of the breeze against my face. I trained most days and was very disciplined about my training regime: Mondays roadwork, Tuesdays hills, Wednesdays longer distance, Thursdays sprints and so on. I believe that success for anything, no matter what it is, starts with discipline.

Doing what you do over and over, having structure, being organised, having a plan, this is what works. Our race tactic was to start out as fast as possible to separate the group, then at the three quarter mark, just when nobody was expecting it, a full on burst to get a far enough lead that at that point, no one could catch me. I won for about five years in the Queensland Championships, but when it came to the Australian titles, I didn’t do so well. When I look back now, a million years later, I look at why that was, why I could win year after year locally and yet when it came to the Australian titles I couldn’t even do the times I had done in the Queensland races. I was living proof that mindset is everything. If I think I can or I think I can’t, I am 100 per cent correct (Henry Ford). The truth is that I thought I couldn’t. If only I could go back, I just know now with my current mindset I could have not only got the times I got

for the Queensland Championships, but I could have won the whole thing. So what’s the learning? The learning is that whatever we want to achieve in our lives is possible, if we practise discipline in doing the do that we know we must do to achieve success. Do the actions that we know are necessary to achieve success, and then do those actions over and over and over. Then we need to constantly say that we can. ACTION + BELIEF = SUCCESS.

GRAND SLAM

LEGENDS The Sports Federation Sports Star of the Year Awards held in January was a night to honour our greatest achievers in the world of sport here on the Sunshine Coast. Prior to the announcement of our Junior and Senior Sports Stars of the Year, the spotlight was shone on our ‘Grand Slam Legends’. Chariots of Fire came over the loud-speaker, the lights were dimmed and up on the big screen, we were transported back to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. We watched on as Irish athlete (and original Sports Federation member) Bob Tisdell won gold in the 400m hurdles.

The ‘Bob Tisdall Medals’ were presented by his proud

DENISE BOYD Denise Boyd is one of Australia’s most successful female sprinters, having reached two Olympic finals in the 200m sprint, recipient of 8 Commonwealth Games medals including two gold, and winner of 11 Australian titles. Denise was also recognised for her achievements and given the honour of flag bearer for Australia at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

CLINT ROBINSON

KIM MCKENZIE In the early 70’s, Kim McKenzie was the first woman involved in surfing. She won the Australian Championships in 1971 and 1972, won the Sports Star of the Year in 1973. She was the only woman invited to compete in the 1975 Smirnoff World Championships in Hawaii against the men. Interestingly, she was also the Mooloolaba shark catcher and the McKenzie Bridge is named in her honour.

Clint Robinson became Australia’s first canoe / kayak gold medallist when he defeated the Norwegian World Champion Knut Holmann to win the 1000 metres singles final in Barcelona in 1992. In Athens in 2004, Robinson combined with his domestic rival Nathan Baggaley to win a silver medal in the K2 500m final. Robinson awarded an OAM for the finest national championship record of any surf lifesaver (when his gold-medal tally reached 30).

¾ cup of cooked quinoa 1 large bunch of parsley finely chopped ¼ cup of finely chopped mint 3-4 large vine ripen tomatoes, seeds removed and diced 1/3 cup roasted red capsicum, see note 3 sprigs of spring onion, thinly sliced Note: To roast red capsicum. Slice sides of capsicum into three or four, depending on shape. Remove the white veins. Place skin side up under oven grill. Grill till skins are charred. Remove and place in a bowl of cold water. Peel off the charred skin and discard. Perfect roasted capsicum. OPTIONAL EXTRAS ¼ cup of toasted pine nuts 50g of crumbled feta DRESSING 2 tbls of olive oil 2 tbls of lemon juice 1 tsp of lemon zest 1 small clove of garlic METHOD Combine all ingredients into a large bowl and toss to combine. Pour over dressing. Toss to combine. Top with pine nuts and crumbled feta if adding.

MORROCAN LAMB 1 butterflied leg of lamb, see note 1-2 tbls of moroccan seasoning Salt & pepper to season Note: You could also use barbeque lamb chops. These are great for kids and very economical. Cut them into pieces. Remove excess fat and season as per instructions. METHOD Trim fat from lamb. Sprinkle with moroccan seasoning, salt and pepper. Get your hands into it and rub in the seasoning. You have to work for flavour! If time permits. Allow to rest for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. In a hot frying pan. Brown both sides of the lamb for three to four minutes each side to seal in the flavours. Place lamb on a rack and bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes to finish the cooking process, (this is for medrare to medium). If using lamb chops I place under oven grill and cook for a few minutes each side. Remove lamb from oven. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Slice thinly and serve with Quinoa Tabouli. Serving Suggestions and Crowd Pleasers Serve on a large platter. Add any of the below sides. This is a great meal to share with family and friends. Allow everyone to dip and use their hands. why... HOLIDAY AT HOME?

Ask us

why?

With the Easter break upon by Josh Minogue us and the Christmas period already a distant memory, everyone at Why Fitness thought it may be time to escape from the reality that is life. But this holiday period, why spend lots of your hard-earned cash going away, when some of the most amazing holiday experiences can be found much closer to home?

Holidaying at home is staying local instead of heading off this break, to sample all the delights the Sunshine Coast has to offer. We’re not talking about the same coffee shop and restaurant you frequent every weekend. The best way to holiday at home is to make a list of all the places you say you must visit and never do, all the restaurants you haven’t tried and do some research into the hidden gems that you may not have even known about, like Noosa Quarry. While holidaying at home may seem boring, the Sunshine Coast is a paradise that many tourists pay good money to visit. On the bright side, there will be no screaming kids for a ten-hour car trip, no accommodation costs and you get to sleep in your own bed every night. Sounds like a winner to me.

why... SURF? With summer over and winter on its way, it may seem a silly time to hit the beach for a few waves. But with our climate, balmy water temperatures and the traditional autumn swell arriving recently, there is no better time to get wet and hit the surf. Australians have been surfing for over 100 years, since Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku gave the first surf lesson in Sydney in 1907. Since then we have fallen in love with riding waves whenever and wherever we can! Surfing is a great way to get fit and healthy. It offers great cardio fitness, as you are constantly paddling for waves. It is low impact, allowing you to do it well into old age and it can be done by just about anyone, making it the perfect family activity. Don’t worry if you have never dipped a toe in the ocean before. There are a number of surf schools on the Coast that are perfect for first-timers, and you can always find a nice wave to get you going at Mooloolaba or Noosa. Who knows, with a few years practise you could be the next Julian Wilson, so get out there, hang loose, rip it up and most importantly, have some fun!

Living Longer Eat Like a Champion!

by Gary Martin ND, Living Valley Springs Health Retreat The life expectancy of Australians, as at 2013, is 83 years; the ninth highest in the world. We are indeed a country of champions when it comes to longevity. In September 2013, the country boasted 4252 living centenarians. However, when we look at the medical needs of those over 60, the levels of chronic disease and the steady increase in nursing home residents, the picture is not so rosy. Many would prefer to live a shorter life rather than suffer the slow and painful degeneration of body and mind during the last quarter. The health intelligence acquired and the choices made during the prime years will determine, to a great degree, the quality of life experienced in old age. Eating properly and doing regular exercise will make a big difference in preparing for the long haul. When it comes to eating, however, there are many differing opinions as to what is considered proper. Irrespective of the various belief systems that influence diet, there is a truth that can significantly reduce the rate of aging, promote optimal wellness 20 ISSUE 11

and prolong life. The science of insulin is a vital key for understanding and achieving quality longevity. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and released in response to elevations in blood glucose levels. It has an extensive effect on metabolism, influencing many bodily functions. Insulin causes cells in the liver and muscles to take up glucose from the blood to be stored as glycogen. Glucose is also conveyed into fat cells by insulin, which then inhibits the use of fat as a source of energy. Basically, insulin converts sugar and other food into energy for immediate use, or for storage to be used in times of need. Insulin, more than any other hormone, regulates the rate of aging. Poor management of the insulin response through improper diet can lead to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis, dementia, gum disease, dental decay and cancer. Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease, and the sixth highest cause of death. Over one million Australians are presently diagnosed, and registered with the National Diabetes Service Scheme. In 2013, the World Health Organisation

reported that there were 347 million diagnosed cases worldwide. According to Diabetes Australia, diabetes costs the Australian taxpayer $14.6 billion per year. Yet, with a simple shift in the carbohydrate-protein-fat ratio in one’s diet, type two diabetes can be avoided, stabilised, managed and even cured. When excessive carbohydrates are ingested over a long period of time, insulin receptors in muscle, liver and fat cells become insulin resistant. They fail to take up sugar. This results in uncontrolled levels of glucose building up in the blood. Insulin receptors in the hypothalamus also become resistant, creating a devastating domino effect throughout the endocrine system. Thyroid function slows down, testosterone and adrenal-hormone levels reduce, melatonin production at night decreases and oestrogen goes up. A prolonged elevation in blood glucose can cause heart disease, obesity, impaired eyesight, peripheral vascular disease, high blood pressure and many other diseases. India is known as the diabetes capital of the world. The Indian Council of Medical Research estimated that the country has

feature

65.1 million diabetes patients requiring regular medication. Only China, with 98.4 million cases, has more diabetes patients globally. Addressing the International Conference for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases in January 2014, Dr. Mohan, president of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, stated that diabetes was now found in people as young as 15 years. Among the main reasons for this was sedentary lifestyle, Dr. Mohan said, adding that escalators, which have become ubiquitous now, shared a major portion of the blame. People just don’t use the stairs anymore! Dr. Mohan said that 17 million people currently suffered kidney problems arising out of diabetes. He added that the focus must be on enacting preventive measures such as promoting physical activity and a proper diet. There are an estimated 77.2 million people in India who are suffering from pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which the patients have high blood glucose levels but are not yet in the diabetes range. These people are at high risk of getting diabetes.

Approximately 42 per cent of the Indian population are strict vegetarians, consuming a diet that is predominantly high carbohydrate, low fat and low protein. If this sector of the country were to replace some of their grain and sweet foods with eggs, soft cheeses, butter and sour cream and increase the performance of regular physical activity, there would be a significant decrease in diabetic statistics within a few years. America also boasts a high diabetes statistic, with 8.3 per cent of the population diagnosed as at January 2011. The American Diabetes Association reported 25.8 million sufferers in its 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet. Once again, this is mostly due to a diet that is high in sugar, processed grain foods and other concentrated carbohydrates. It has been found that when insulin is controlled through a reduction of carbohydrates in the diet, animals live much longer and the rate of aging is significantly reduced. The key is to be educated rather than medicated. Control dietary carbohydrate, keeping consumption to around 50 to 80 grams per day

(one slice of bread has approximately 15 grams). Sugar and other refined carbohydrates provide quick energy, however they also tend to elevate blood glucose levels and ultimately promote burnout. Replace carbohydrates with good fats that provide sustained energy, and maintain a moderate level of protein in the diet. Make vegetables the main source of carbohydrates. Type two diabetes is a lifestyle related disease that is totally avoidable. Regular exercise, along with a little self-control in relation to those naughty, sweet treats is generally all that is needed to live much longer. In 2000, Australia boasted seventh position in the world for longevity. We now come in at ninth. With our magnificent climate, open space and access to quality foods, there is no reason why we cannot take first position in the next world study. If the majority of our population were to place an emphasis on an active lifestyle and a controlled carbohydrate diet, we could certainly become world champions in the longevity stakes! www.lvs.com.au WHY FITNESS 21

Brooke Coulstock 123FIT My all time 10 minute calorie burning exercise would have to be interval training on my Elliptical. This requires the client to work at an effort of 90-95% for 30 seconds then back off to an effort of about 30-40% for 30 seconds and repeat for 10 minutes. I have had clients burn up to 200 calories in 10 minutes! Some of these clients even have ‘bad’ knees! Ellipticals simulate the movement of walking or running except the movement is smooth and continuous throughout the range of motion with minimal impact to your joints. Interval training on an elliptical crosstrainer provides a low-impact full body interval workout because both the arms and legs are utilized. Many people who find walking or running painful because of joint problems or injuries opt to train on ellipticals and get fantastic results.

Complete all three super sets with as minimal rest used as possible.

Repeat going back to other side using your two hands – one on shoulder, one on your head pulling in opposite directions to increase pressure and again hold each position for 30 seconds. Lie on back and hug one leg to chest. Open to side, keeping the knee near the armpit. Take across the body & hold. Extend the bent leg and hold the ankle or use a strap if you cannot reach but try and keep the leg straight. Hold for two minutes. Re-align the spine, grab under the thigh. Your Skin Matters with Melissa Drury | Skinial

DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LASER AND NON-LASER TATTOO REMOVAL? The laser method of tattoo removal is usually an extremely painful process. It involves highly intensive light impulses that are absorbed into the ink particles, causing them to burst and scatter. This results in a lightening of the tattoo. Between ten and 20 treatments are required, as after each treatment the remaining colour particles are encapsulated again, which means the laser has to be repeated.

Need to RETHINK the ink

The colour pigments, their by-products and impurities are transported away via the vascular system. Ink has been isolated in lymph nodes and body organs. The non-laser tattoo removal method uses a naturally occurring colour remover and the body’s healing process to remove the ink from the skin. The sensation experienced during the procedure is similar or less than when receiving a tattoo. The ink is rejected and migrates to the surface of the skin, where it crusts and scabs off approximately three weeks later. One option is to patch test a small area prior to commencing full treatment.

The non-laser tattoo removal method uses a naturally occurring colour remover and the body’s healing process to remove the ink from the skin. As ink is totally removed from the skin, the number of treatments required is on average four to eight, so it is a cost-effective option. Another choice is to remove part of a tattoo to modify it or avoid a ‘cover up’ re-tattoo.

Circumstances can change but now you don’t have to live with your tattoo for the rest of your life. Until recently the only methods of tattoo removal were extremely painful and not healthy for the body or effective. Call now for an appointment. before

Wholefood Super Smoothie to Power Up Naturally... NOURISH, CLEANSE and ENERGISE!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU ABSORB Cultured or fermented foods have been used in many cultures around the world for a very, very long time. Foods were fermented as a way to preserve them, so that one could have supplies during the sparse cold months. With the invention of refrigeration, as well as packaged and refined foods, came the end of an era. Fermented foods were no longer regularly consumed in most western cultures. Our bodies no longer get this daily intake of protective nutrients, enzymes and beneficial bacteria. More than 80 per cent of our immune system is located in the lining of the gut wall. We have an ecosystem that exists within our own bodies. It is full of both friendly and unfriendly microorganisms. With today’s lifestyle, many factors weaken and upset this balance. This includes the chemicals and medicines we use, our environment, fast food, processed diets, and stresses. Having the right kind of beneficial microbes is essential for both healthy immune function and healthy gut function. You just need to have more of the pro biotic ‘for life’ friendly guys to own more real estate in the gut! Fermented foods are revered as having healing properties. The word ‘kefir’, Turkish in origin, actually translates to ‘feel good’. We now understand why these foods are so beneficial to us. The friendly bacteria – the lactobacilli – actually partially digest the food, so the nutrients in the food are easier for our body to absorb. These foods are packed full of vitamins and minerals, enzymes to aid digestion (particularly digestion of proteins) and beneficial bacteria. They also have an alkalising effect on the body. Maintaining a good balance of gut bacteria through diet is one of the most important things you can do to increase your chances of remaining healthy and having vitality for many years to come. Preparing your own fermented foods at home is quite easy and cost effective. You can buy good quality fermented liquids, fermented probiotic powders and cultured vegetables. Remember you are what you eat – but more importantly, you are what you absorb!

Your Performance Matters with Jodi Chapman | Advanced Wellness

BE YOUR OWN HOME GROWN CHAMPION... ARE YOU TAKING EVERY STEP AVAILABLE TO OPTIMISE YOUR PERFORMANCE? I was fortunate to hear one of our own champions, Casey Munro, speak about his experience recently at Melbourne Ironman, expressing a powerful message about mindset going into the race. On top of your training, nutrition, and of course rest, mindset is an incredibly important aspect of your preparation to perform at your peak, whether you’re a professional athlete or a novice. Whoever you are in the spectrum of athletes, being your own home grown champion is your ultimate goal. Your body has the ability to produce energy for endurance and speed with training. If there are body systems associated with increasing your energy that you haven’t accessed yet, would you be interested in making them function better? Adrenal glands and hormones are responsible for producing DHEA, which increases energy through its ability to naturally produce higher levels of testosterone, progesterone and oestrogen. Cortisol production through stress, injury, and lack of sleep will deplete your DHEA, causing an energy deficit in both the short and long term. Your liver is responsible for detoxification, glycogen storage, protein synthesis, and production of digestive enzymes. If your body is overburdened by toxicity through alcohol, chemical, or food intolerances, your liver is not able to deal with these functions and fatigue, insomnia, poor digestion and poor hormone production will occur, leading to a poorer performance and lack of energy. Cellular function is paramount in energy production, where the mitochondria are the energy producing organelles of the body. Keeping your cells free of toxicity and free-radical damage, and highly oxygenated will go a long way to optimising energy. Specific high dose nutrients such as Ubiquinol can increase that level further. A clean diet, with the right balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, from food sources tolerated by your immune system, is incredibly important. Boosting your immune system by reducing gut infections and colonising beneficial bacteria will also improve nutrient absorption, increasing iron and B12 levels to prevent fatigue. There is so much you can do in your everyday life to optimise your performance, including getting eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, reducing stress, eating well-tolerated foods based on high quality blood food allergy testing, reducing alcohol consumption and chemical exposure, and using nutrients to improve liver and cellular function. Blood testing for hormone and nutrient levels is also a wise decision. A comprehensive health check is not difficult and makes an incredible difference to not only your performance but to your everyday life. It’s all about advanced wellness and your individual needs.

Brain Matters with Michelle Loch | UnLoched Potential

WE DON’T SEE WITH OUR EYES, WE SEE WITH OUR BRAINS! Everything we ‘see’ is actually an interpretation of the data that comes to us via the eye. That interpretation is generated as an analysis of, and comparison to, the memories, experiences and emotional content of our brain. In other words, we see the world through our own personal filter of life experience. Most of us have had the experience of being in a conversation where we thought we were talking about the same thing, only to discover that our interpretation of the discussion was completely different to that of the other person! Scary.

Do you want Peak Mental Performance? Are you... • Facing the mature age mental decline?

Essentially, the existence of this filter means that we unwittingly make lots of assumptions in our daily lives. To combat this we need to do two things: be mindful and be curious.

• Gearing up for exams?

Mindfulness is the ability to hold your attention fully in the present moment. Being mindful means we can consciously challenge ourselves to make sure that our response to a situation or conversation is not an assumption – if you don’t realise you are doing it, you can’t do anything about it!

• Conscious of the need to keep your brain healthy for your lifetime?

Curiosity is the willingness to accept that you might not have all the information or perspective needed to be objective… and in my world that means asking questions. Don’t assume, be curious! Asking at least three questions before you provide your advice or answer is a great way to ensure that your brain is not getting in the way of allowing you to be a really helpful and supportive coach, trainer, friend or colleague. Be a CHAMPION at being present and paying attention. Try the brain-presence activity below:

GET THE PICTURE Give your visual attention span a workout. Study this photograph for one minute. Then close the magazine and write down as many of the items in the photo as you can remember. Try a second time, but before you start, take a deep breath and actively focus on the photo. Did you do any better the second time? LOCAL HEROES IN THE WATER Usually, when you hear the word hero, you immediately think of Superman or Spiderman. Then there are the real-world heroes who put on their invisible capes and go out every day to make a difference in our community. In the world of swimming, these are our ‘learn to swim’ instructors, swimming champions and lifesavers! All our local and national champions in swimming begin in a local ‘learn to swim’ class in their hometown. In Queensland, especially the Sunshine Coast, learning to swim is essential and the instructors, our qualified heroes with invisible capes, are there waiting with open arms to catch that child frantically doggy-paddling between parent and instructor. From here, our homegrown swimming heroes are born. World champion swimmers who compete at an elite level often take on a role as mentor for kids who have goals to one day be just like them. To these children and too many of us, they are heroes, heroes who are immensely talented, dedicated and passionate about swimming and strive to proudly represent our beautiful country. Everyone looks up to these men and women who dedicate most of their lives to bettering themselves. This is a hero quality that is inspiring to us all.

Trekking the Kokoda Trail is being a champion, experiencing the unknown 96km, trekking the tracks many Australians died on fighting for our country, enduring the sore legs, the wet feet, the rushing of different emotions, the muddy clothes, shoes and everything else, the rain, the dirty water, the lack of hygiene. It is all something bigger than most of us could imagine.

We are all champions; just taking that step you are unsure of is being a champion. Trekking the huge mountains of New Zealand is bigger than most of us, taking the risk of the extreme weather change from hot summer days to freezing snow and rain, pushing every step to make it to the top of a mountain and breathing in the amazing views. The sense of being alive is indescribable. Championing the mindset it takes to do something, anything that is bigger than you, is life changing if you let it be. So why not make that ‘being that champion’ about yourself? Have a think about what is bigger than you are right now. Write down a list, and challenge yourself to do it, be a champion to you. Fit, fun and fabulous! Come join the fun at our new Fitness Studio!

GET YOUR GROOVE ON Dancing With the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and other popular television shows have brought the art of dance into the mainstream limelight. This has many people asking the question, “Does dancing count as a workout?” The answer is “Yes”, according to the Mayo Clinic and other respected health organisations. Dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking, cycling, or any other fitness activity. The health and weightloss benefits depend upon how often you dance, how long you dance for and how much intensity you put into your dance workout. One of the greatest health benefits of dancing is cardiovascular conditioning. The National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association recommend 30 to 60 minutes of cardiovascular activity on most days of the week. Dancing is one way to meet that requirement. In fact one study, conducted at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, shows that dancing improves the heart rate and overall physical fitness, similar to a walking or jogging program. Besides the cardio burn, dancing can also build strong bones. Since dancing is a weight-bearing activity, it can actually help to slow or even prevent the process of osteoporosis. Perhaps best of all, dancing can improve your mood. Research from California State University at Long Beach indicates that dancing increases serotonin levels. These feel-good brain chemicals are released into your bloodstream after just five minutes of moderately intense dancing exercise. It’s easy to get started. Try these helpful tips and get your ‘groove on’! Don’t be a wallflower. If you want to dance, you have to take the first step. Put on your boogie shoes and just start moving!

Triathlon Matters with David Chick | Allez Sport Mooloolaba

NEW CYCLE LAWS NO SILVER BULLET As triathletes, we spend the largest amount of training time on the bike, which is also potentially the most dangerous of the three sports to train for. The new cycling laws this month require motorists to provide more room, one metre when passing, and when travelling over 60km an hour, 1.5 metres. While this is a step in the right direction, don’t expect that the road will be automatically safer from now on. Like most cyclists, I have had my share of close calls, with cars passing without due care or clearance. It can be quite unnerving how close some motorists come to sideswiping or rear-ending us, sometimes while hurling a tirade of abuse out the window. It’s almost as though we are fair game on a bike and they don’t feel like we are worthy of any common courtesy.

The new cycling laws this month require motorists to provide more room, one metre when passing, and when traveling over 60km an hour, 1.5 metres. While this is a step in the right direction, don’t expect that the road will be automatically safer from now on. On the flipside, I have seen and ridden with cyclists who feel like they do ‘own the road’ or choose to ride two abreast because they are allowed to by law, even though common sense would suggest there wasn’t a wide enough shoulder on the road to do so. It is up to us as riders to sum up the situation. If someone in your cycling group is not obeying road rules or riding dangerously, then speak up. It reflects badly on all cyclists when we run red lights and break road rules, and we will not get respect from motorists if they see this happening.

WHY GREEN EXERCISE IS SO GOOD FOR YOU So what is ‘green’ exercise? Green exercise refers to physical exercise undertaken in natural environments. With obstacle racing bringing this concept to the foreground we thought we’d share our top seven reasons to ‘go green’! 1. You’ll be happier. Natural light tends to elevate people’s mood, while exercise has been shown to help people relax and cheer up. Green exercise means more smiles!

Get Obstacle Fit in 2014

2. Amazing sights! Glistening lakes, rolling hills, tree-lined trails, blazing sunsets and sandy beaches – the beauty never ends when exercising in the great outdoors. 3. Aromatic delights. From blooming wildflowers to gorgeous gums, there are endless refreshing scents when you explore Mother Nature. 4. Improve your quality of sleep. Sunlight helps set your body’s internal clock that tells you when to eat and sleep. Increased Vitamin D production can also help fight osteoporosis and cancer as well as depression and heart disease.

You’ll be happier. Natural light tends to elevate people’s mood, while exercise has been shown to help people relax and cheer up. Green exercise means more smiles! 5. Disconnect. Take a break from technology and the on-the-run lifestyle we are all so accustomed to. 6. Improve your self-esteem and mood. Being outside allows you to get your mind out of its own stories and focus on something that is pure. Nature is a beautiful example of that – it’s the way things are meant to be. 7. You may heal faster. Researchers report that spinal surgery patients experience less pain and use fewer pain medications if they are exposed to natural light. Ready to get out there? Next time you have the opportunity to get outside for a workout or a brisk walk, take the chance to soak up a good dose of Mother Nature!

Chiropractic Matters with Dr David Hendrey | Hendrey Chiropractic

REHAB VS. PRE-HAB Are you an injury waiting to happen? All functional movement in sports and life require a strong stable core. Your core is comprised of your spine and pelvic bones, your surrounding ligaments and your core muscles. The three major core muscles are the transverse abdominus, the multifidus, and the obliques. Your stability is broken up into: Static stability via ligaments

What is QFCT and do I need it? Quantitive Functional Capacity Testing is a series of five tests to quantify your:  Strength  Balance  Endurance  Flexibility  Control

which can help prevent injury

Dynamic stability provided by correct muscle control via the brain. When you hold a poor posture, you rest on the ligaments. After 60 minutes, the ligaments are stretched and deformed to a level of clinical significance. That is when you lose the static stability. This places you are a higher risk of injury, especially in the back and hamstrings. Dynamic stability requires your nerve -muscle circuit to activate or contract your core muscles in the right order. This is known as ‘correct motor firing patterns’. The parts of your circuit are: The receptors in your muscles and joints Your sensory nerves to take the messages to the brain Your brain’s sensory and motor cortex to process and co-ordinate the response Your nerves to take the message to all the muscles Your muscles to fire or contract at the right time.

FREE 20min QFCT testing for Why Fitness readers! Valid until 31 May, 2014

Any disturbance to the motor firing pattern causes a loss of dynamic control, early fatigue, poor performance and greater risk of injury. The good news is there are tests to discover if you are an injury waiting to happen. These tests are collectively known as QUANTITAIVE FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY TESTING. The series of five tests quantify your strength, endurance, balance, flexibility and control you have. The testing also tells us what exercises you need to do to stop the injury BEFORE it occurs. Everyone should be tested to prevent needless suffering. This 20 minute testing could save your whole season, allowing you to prevent the injury waiting to happen and return you to peak performance.

Neck Pain: How you can be part of the solution

FIT AND FAMOUS with Richard Fogarty

You won’t see him being chased by paparazzi, but when it comes to fit and famous, it’s hard to go past well-known Sunshine Coast local identity Troy ‘Chooky’ Deighton. Fit and Famous finally caught up with Chooky to ask the hard questions. What would you be doing if you didn’t get into fitness? Going crazy - it would make me grumpy. Do you have any superstitions when training and competing in your sport? No, not at all. You just know when it’s not your day. What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve done while competing? I ran into a pole while road running. Favourite sports person? Daniel Merrett of the Brisbane Lions. Best sporting memory you have? Playing in Victoria for Queensland against all other states. I played on Wanganeen he kicked six goals on me, which was a big learning curve. Biggest or best break you ever got? Being drafted to West Adelaide at 17, and also becoming General Manager of Hot91.1 and Zinc96.1. What is the best advice you have received? Don’t worry about the money. The money will come if you work hard and do the right thing. I am the happiest when? Pushing my body to its limits and feeling the mind challenges and emotions that come with that. It’s a test of your mind power; you feel exhilaration when you finish. When I am not training in fitness I am? It sounds cliché but loving life with my awesome partner and three wonderful kids. Most people don’t know? I dealt with depression as a young person. My greatest success is? I have to say my kids, but also coming from running around in a chicken suit for a radio breakfast show to General Manager of Hot91.1 and Zinc96.1 after 17 years in the industry. What makes me really laugh is? Funny people, like Todd Widdicombe and Nuggett. Why fitness? It keeps you mentally strong and alert. I find if I don’t do it, I feel sluggish, plus it helps to feel good about yourself. You never know which direction life will take you. Four years ago, Lee Daffin operated a private chiropractic clinic in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Following a spinal cord injury and the paralysis of his right leg, he was left physically unable to practise his profession. During his recovery, there was a lot of soul searching around what he would do with his life if he was unable to continue as a chiropractor. His one true passion was academia; he loved it. Lee now works as a tutor at the University of the Sunshine Coast and has just been confirmed as a PhD candidate. Non-specific neck pain affects between 40 to 80 per cent of the population and costs the global community billions. Lee will be investigating the relationship between our neck’s curvature and the neurological control of balance. His aim is to investigate characteristics that are representative of healthy spinal function. Ultimately, Lee would like this information to be used to assist health practitioners to identify at-risk individuals, however this preliminary study will target healthy individuals. Accordingly, Lee is looking for motivated healthy participants for his study. To be considered, you would need to be 18 to 30 years old, with no history of spinal problems. As a participant in the study, you would be helping Lee to discover if these characteristics exist. The only physical requirement is the ability to stand still. By participating, you will also receive an insight into how your spine is aging and how your nervous system controls it. This research has been approved by the University of the Sunshine Coast Human Research Ethics Committee (protocol S/14/607). If you are interested in finding out more about the study, please contact Lee at Lee.Daffin@research.usc.edu.au.

The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast is hailed as Australia's toughest endurance event. It is a grueling, cross country, 4-person team event held over 96km, with a time limit for completion of 39 hours. And there is a good reason behind this distance and time 96km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian Troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track.

BEACH FIT with Kaitlyn Akers (With acknowledgement to SLSQ media for the interview below with Nicole) SPRINT SENSATION SETS SIGHTS ON NATIONAL GLORY In the world of beach sprints, where every second counts, Nicole Kay is a girl in a hurry. At last year’s Surf Life Saving national championships, the 16-year-old Mooloolaba speedster produced the performance of her fledgling career. She snatched the open beach

sprint title from a star-studded field that included former Australian champions Melissa Howard and Laura Shorter.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Nicole, who has battled injury across the second half of the summer.

Her performance stunned the surf lifesaving community and saw Nicole etch her name into the history books as the youngest competitor to ever win an open gold medal at the national championships.

She’ll line up at this year’s Australian Championships after overcoming a stress fracture which threatened to derail her 2014 campaign.

Twelve months down the track and Nicole has solidified her position as one of the sport’s premier beach sprinters, with a series of dominant performances in SLSQ’s Fastest Man on Sand series. While Nicole admitted she felt extra pressure after her breakthrough win last year, she said the performance also gave her greater confidence moving forward. “Winning the national championships was the most amazing feeling I have ever had, and being the youngest ever to win an open event made it feel even better,” Nicole said, reflecting on her achievement. “After the win I do feel a little more pressure, but it also gives me greater confidence.” “But the past is the past now, and I have a brand new year ahead of me and anything could happen,” she said.

While the injury kept her away from serious running for four to six weeks, a rigorous training and fitness regime in the pool and at the gym kept her fitness levels up and will have her primed come race day. “I was in the pool keeping fit, replacing all my track and beach sessions with a pool session doing deep water running,” she said. “I was also in the gym four times a week keeping my quads, hamstrings, core and upper body all strong, so I’d be ready to compete at the Aussie titles,” Nicole added. Nicole will line up at this year’s Australian Championships in the under 17 beach flags event, where she’s hoping to place in the top three. “Even if I don’t reach my goals, I will always be happy when I know that I tried my best in every event,” she said.

Today, over 25% of Australian children aged between 5 and 17 years are overweight or obese, and this figure is set to rise to 33% by 2020. Children’s physical activity levels are dropping, as a result Les Mills International, world-leader in Group Fitness, invested over five years of research and developed the Born to Move program for children of all age groups. Born to Move develops cognitive and motor skills with a focus on fun and fitness. It is a priority of the program that children leave the class with a sense of achievement and a wish to return. Recent research by the University of Canberra (UC) has shown that the way to increase children’s desire to exercise is to ensure they have a positive experience when doing it. The UC recommends delivering fun and inspiring lessons rather than promoting competition. Cherish Fitness is the only provider of Les Mills Born to Move on the Sunshine Coast. Classes are held for 2-3 year olds (a parent or caregiver takes part) and for 4-5 year olds. Classes are held at the Kawana Island Meeting Place which overlooks the water and has a café next door. Original music is written for each age group with instructions interwoven into the lyrics. The moves are easy to follow and are based on foundational movement skills such as running, jumping, marching, finding a beat, stomping, clapping, skipping, kicking and balancing. Mind Your Mind The Cerebral Diet Just like your body, your mind needs to be trained and nourished properly in order for it to function optimally. If you feed it rubbish, it will get sick. If you don’t exercise it, challenge it or take it for a run from time to time, it will get fat, lazy and lethargic. Its potential will never be explored and, more than likely, it will be an unpleasant place for you to live.

WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper

The Things We Mind We mind our step. We mind our manners. We mind our money. We mind our language. We mind our business. But more often than not, we don’t mind our mind. At times, the human mind is like a Golden Retriever puppy, consuming pretty much anything and everything in its path. Just like the puppy, the mind will often consume things that make it sick. Do you ever feel like that space between your ears is not the healthiest place to be? Welcome to a very large club. Mind Matters Your mind is the control room of your life. It’s where you absorb, process and interpret information. It’s where you give the events and experiences of your world meaning. It’s the internal filter of your external environment. It’s where your beliefs, values, standards, expectations and fears live and operate. It’s the window from which you view the world around you. It’s the place that gives birth to your dreams, hopes and ideas. It’s the director of your choices, reactions and behaviours and therefore, the controller and shaper of your personal reality.

48 ISSUE 11

I’ve shared five strategies I use to consciously and practically mind my mind. You might find them helpful. 1. Brain Workouts. As we age, we typically experience a significant physical and mental deterioration. But the good news is that much of this decline is avoidable and totally unnecessary. Sadly, many people stop consciously and intentionally learning once they finish school. Sure, they learn things incidentally, but they don’t actively stimulate their mind to keep it in shape. Just as I train my body regularly, so too do I consciously train my brain. I am committed to life-long learning, to absorbing new information on a daily basis. I am on a neverending learning curve and my mind thrives on it. Learning excites me, as does exploring my cognitive and creative potential. Naturally, I will never have more potential but I can find new and exciting ways to use more of what I’ve been given. Ironically, I wasn’t a great student at school; possibly a little distracted by girls and sport. These days, I problem-solve, do word puzzles and play brain games daily. I have intellectual and philosophical discussions with friends and colleagues, who challenge, teach and correct me. Even writing articles for this awesome magazine is a great workout for my mind. Each finished product requires a level of planning, consideration

and mental energy. Each article is something of a workout. 2. Laugh. I like to balance the serious stuff with some fun stuff. Life can be a pretty intense and un-fun experience from time to time, so I like to produce some happy hormones regularly. Laughter is life enhancing and therapeutic. It’s health promoting. It produces a positive chemical reaction within seconds, with a range of beneficial physiological consequences. And who doesn’t want that? A life devoid of laughter is no life. Rich people who never laugh aren’t rich at all, they just have money. And I know plenty of them! 3. Avoid Toxic People and Situations. As a coach, my job often requires me to be in tough situations, working with people who are dealing with some pretty big issues. It’s fair to say that these sessions are not always uplifting or happy experiences. And that’s okay, of course. I’m committed to dealing with the tough, messy and uncomfortable stuff when required, but when I step away from the sometimes draining responsibilities of my work, it’s important for me to offset the mental and emotional drain with something less heavy. I’m not interested in spending one second of my personal time with energy vampires. As much as possible, I spend that time with people who will drag me up not down. I suggest you do the same. 4. Mind Your Language. When speaking to myself and others, I am very careful with my words. I am a conscious labeller. As a writer and speaker, I am ever aware of the power that my words have to affect people, for good or bad. Speak negatively and pretty soon
