editor’s note

EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster Don’t you just love ‘winter’ on the Sunshine Coast? I know I do and not because I am over the heat of summer or because I like to learn fancy new ways to tie my scarves (which I have by the way!). I love winter on the Coast because it is on these days that I am reminded why I live here. Sure it’s a little chilly first thing in the morning but almost every day unfolds into the bluest of blue skies, the warmest of sunny days and yes, you can actually still wear shorts and swim in the ocean if you want to. We, and by we I mean all of us who live on the Sunshine Coast, are truly blessed. For me, winter is a great reminder of this. So as you know, I love ‘firsts’. That is doing things for the first time. These past few weeks I have enjoyed a few of these. I completed my first ever Green Smoothie Challenge; I did my first bar muscle up (with a band); took a motor bike ride to Pomona; in a little over a month I will be going to Las Vegas; and as we go to print, I swam with the whales (you can read about this on page 8). The thing about ‘firsts’ is that if you think about it, you could almost manage one every day. Think about it. Think about how you felt every time you did something for the first time. I bet you are picturing yourself with a big smile on your face! It’s truly awesome to do something for the first time. It’s good for the mind, body and soul!

You have within you right now, everything you need to deal with whatever the world can throw at you. Brian Tracy

My challenge to you this issue is to keep a record of all the ‘firsts’ you do for the next month. Once a week, try and incorporate a big or exciting ‘first’ in there too. Not only will you feel amazing, but it’s a fantastic way to incorporate a different approach to getting up off the couch and engaging with life! Why not post them on the Why Fitness Magazine facebook page, we would love to read about them. Sometimes, through the cooler months, it’s easy to get bogged down and become unmotivated. I guarantee you that this will get you going. This issue is all about inspiring you and motivating you through the winter. It is an absolutely amazing issue filled with incredible stories of people who live their purpose, do life-changing things to help others, tips, advice and delicious recipes. Get ready to be woken up from your ‘winter hiatus’! Yours in fitness, food and fun,

Wow! Is all I can say. I was so fortunate to head out on Saturday with Sunreef Diving just as we were going to print on this issue. No this was not 'whale watching', we got to swim with these majestic creatures. In an exclusive Australian first, Sunreef Diving are now equipped to take groups out to take part in this amazing experience. I thought I would be scared and nervous but no part of me at any stage, in or out of the water, felt that way. It was amazing and I can honestly say, anyone could do it (there was a 13 year old girl out there with us!). And the most asked question... "Was it cold?" No it wasn't at all, the water was beautiful. You should know too that I am not a strong swimmer, am scared of the water and I hate the cold. AND I LOVED IT! This is absolutely something everyone should put on their bucket list! Massive thanks to Dan the Whale Man, Jess, Tom and the Sunreef Dive Team and to Matt for capturing some amazing images. s t u o k r o W To p Ten W i nter By Henry Hound It’s winter, and the time for sun and surf on the Sunshine Coast may be waning. But the humidity is low, the air is crisp and it’s the best time for breathing easy and full – while getting your best exercise of the season. Here’s your chance to get as fit as a fiddle and in tip-top shape when spring rolls around!

1

BUSH WALKING, WALKING OR HIKING

Whatever name you call it, the Sunshine Coast has an abundance of stimulating mountains, hiking trails, national parks, pounding waterfalls and lush rainforest treks. All of these give you incredible views, fresh air and the sounds and smells of nature, while you’re getting a powerful cardio workout. Besides improving your blood pressure and sugar levels, it’s great for building bone density strength in your lower body and core and controlling your weight. You can work on your balance too. At the usual walking pace, three kilometres takes about an hour.

2RUNNING

Running won’t seem daunting when you consider that it’s a good bet for those looking to shed a few pounds. People put about twice as much energy into running as walking. Running also regulates appetite hormones so you eat less, and so is great for the waist. This all gives you good reasons to reward yourself with that favorite slice of pizza.

3BIKING

On the bike you move along, invigorated, especially along the beach trails. Breathe the fresh sea air, check out the magnificent coastal views and get great exercise. Plus, it’s a social event as well with family and/ or friends. Figure burning 20 calories per kilometre you cycle, no matter what your speed. Speed it up and you can blast over 450 calories in one hour.

TIME IS 4COMMERCIAL EXERCISE TIME

7TABATA SET

Choose four of these for a warm up: 15 squats, 15 push ups, 15 crunches, 15 seconds of high knees, four sets of lunges, jump rope with or without a rope 30-40 seconds, hop back and forth using both feet, or one leg for 30-40 seconds.

8TRAMPOLINING

If you’re stuck indoors, forgo fast-forwarding commercials while plopped on the couch, and use those commercial breaks for easy movement. Just stash some resistance bands or a jump rope under your couch if you like, or no equipment is needed at all with this simple, easy body circuit.

Next choose two for strength, balance and muscle control: squats for 1012 reps, lunges 10-12 reps, push ups 10-12 reps, calf raises 10-12 reps.

5THE KETTLEBELL WORKOUT

Kettlebells with their handy handles come in all sizes, weights and materials, and can be inexpensive. They are known to burn as many calories as a running sprint – one study showed a 20 minute workout with a kettlebell burns 20 calories a minute. The workout leaves you with a metabolism burning for hours after, and is a great fat loss tool combining strength and cardio workouts. Don’t worry about arm strength with a kettlebell – the activity strength comes from your legs with the bell between your legs, bringing it up only to chin level, with the momentum of the bell taking it down. Exercises for it are widely available everywhere, and it’s a great indoor winter exercise.

6THE MEDICINE BALL WORKOUT

Like the kettlebell, this tool is also easily stored, comes in all weights and materials and is inexpensive. It gives you an increased workout resistance that works on your balance and strength and is a great calorie burner! It can target any particular part of your body, too. Workout routines with them are simple, and videos and photos for this are plentiful everywhere.

The Tabata set is the new rage of just four minutes of intense exercise, alternating between 20 seconds of your utmost efforts, followed by 10 seconds of total rest. All you need is a Tabata timer. Exercises include traditional and easy jump squats, jumping jacks, push-ups, jump rope, stationary bike or elliptical – your choice, so that makes it personal. Tabata training has been called the four minute fat burning miracle and can be done anywhere, anytime.

Jumping has gone high level but easy, with trampolining. This sport and exercise takes up to 80 per cent off the stress on weight-bearing joints, while stimulating metabolism, improving balance, improving oxygen circulation, firming and toning muscles and building up bone mineral content. It’s also beneficial in reducing cellulite. Indoor trampoline centres are turning up in many areas, and can be a cool break from the winter doldrums.

9BOKWA

Zumba dancing is still tops, but the new trend is Bokwa. Bokwa is easy because there’s no choreography and no counting – you simply draw letters and numbers with your feet while dancing or moving to popular music. You can be any age, and even have two left feet while burning up to 1,200 calories – more than enough to stoke your furnace! www.bowafitness.com

10ANYTHING NEW

Winter is a time to explore something different for the new season – a new activity or a class. Venture forth with indoor volleyball, basketball, squash or swimming, archery, martial arts, rock wall climbing, kick boxing or table tennis. You can even gain some new friends and learn some new skills while keeping fit. And remember, whether you’re keeping fit outside or indoors, since it’s winter on the Sunshine Coast you can even take a relaxing dip in the ocean!

THE MIND MENTOR with Vickie Magic

It’s cold outside your snuggly, warm, beautiful bed and the doona is pulled up high over the top of your head. HOW DO YOU GET OUT? It happens to all of us – our beds feel amazing and it’s so easy just to stay there and say, “I will train this afternoon instead.” I don’t know about you, but I do know that most of the time when I say that, it doesn’t happen. So what can we do to make ourselves get up and follow through on the promise we made before we went to sleep? (When it wasn’t quite so cold, quite so dark, quite so cosy). There really is only one thing to do here, and that, of course, is JUST DO IT. But how? For me, what has worked over and over and over in lots of situations is replacing the word BUT with the word AND. I want to get up and train, but it’s too cold I want to get up and train, but it’s too cosy in bed I want to get up and train, but it’s dark outside I want to get up and train, but it’s raining I want to get up and train, but I feel a little under the weather I want to get up and train, but…replace with whatever your thing is here CHANGE IT TO AND I want to get up and train, AND it’s too cold I want to get up and train, AND it’s too cosy in bed I want to get up and train, AND it’s dark outside I want to get up and train, AND it’s raining I want to get up and train, AND I feel a little under the weather I want to get up and train, AND…replace with whatever your thing is here Can you see the difference? The first one stops you, means you were going to and now you’re not. The second one just says, “yep and it’s cold, yep and it’s this or it’s that,” which means you can still do it. This sounds so simple and so DUH, you’re kidding me, right? But honestly, if you try it, you’ll be amazed at how it can turn, “I was going to but,” into “I was going to, and I did.” Vickie Magic is the owner/publisher of both Why Fitness and Business Matters Magazine. WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray

The Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival has just wrapped up, and what a brilliant event it was. 2014 marked the 52nd carnival and it just continues to grow each year. This year there were 10 events right across the region and more than 3000 bowlers and their families came to town. While people of all ages are increasingly playing this year-round sport, it’s still primarily enjoyed by seniors, who for this carnival travel from around Australia to enjoy the Sunshine Coast lifestyle for an average of five weeks. So many of our events attract visitors to the region, but stays this long are unique, and that’s great news for local businesses and our tourism industry. There’s also another reason this Carnival, and the sport of lawn bowls in general, stands out from the rest. It provides a wonderful opportunity for older people in our community to keep active and maintain social connections. What better way to stay in touch with friends and make new ones, than by exercising at the same time? As we all know, it’s easier to stay motivated with our fitness goals when you’re working out with a friend, and there aren’t too many sports that allow equal parts exercise, skill and social activity the way bowls does. Well done to everyone who organised and competed in this year’s Carnival. Jason O’Pray, Economic Development (Tourism, Sport and Major Events) Portfolio, Division 8 Councillor.

27 Weddings… and counting! Meet the I DO Body Transformation Expert transforming happy couples! Why Fitness Magazine caught up with the Coast’s most romantic body transforming expert, Tauu Andersson to discuss life and the benefits of personal training before your big day! “Couples that sweat together, stay together.” Tauu advised. Originally from the suburbs of Sydney, Tauu Andersson moved to the Sunshine Coast with his family 15 years ago. When he arrived on the Coast, he became passionate about football and surf boat rowing and represented respective clubs in Caloundra. His love for fitness grew rapidly and his dream of entering the fitness industry was born. Shortly after Tauu’s career as a personal trainer began. One day his mate approached him with a challenge to assist him and his fiancé in shaping up for their wedding day. Tauu was thrilled at the idea and began planning the training program immediately. With only 15 weeks to make a difference in their lives, Tauu had a task on his hands.

With Tauu’s knowledge and expertise and the dedication of the couple, the transformation was a resounding success. “Even I couldn’t believe the difference on their wedding day” says Tauu, who attended the wedding. He recalls the looks on their faces and says the thrill of knowing he had helped them look and feel amazing on their wedding day was like no other. It was here that the true concept for Body Transformations was born. Tauu has gone on to help many couples as well as individuals for special events such as birthdays and anniversaries. Tauu’s business aims at assisting people in looking and feeling their absolute best on their special days. The feeling he gets when seeing the reactions of his clients is what drives him to help even more people. When he is not transforming bodies and lives, Tauu enjoys taking walks along Point Cartwright with his partner, Lani and climbing Mount Coolum. Spending time with his loved ones is a large part of his life. So for Tauu it’s a bit like the movie ‘27 Dresses’ only for him, it’s more like ‘27 Weddings’ … and counting!

The couple trained separately to ensure their personal goals (which differed) were met in time for the big day.

WHY FITNESS 11

Tennis Elbow: No More Pain After living in Brisbane for 38 years, Sharyn Cook and her husband and three children moved to Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays in 2002. Sharyn had recently completed a hairdressing apprenticeship after being a full-time mum for eight years. With a new home town, new jobs and eventually building their dream house in Airlie Beach, things were going well for a few years until Sharyn developed severe tennis elbow. Despite months of physiotherapy there was no resolution to this painful condition, and the physio eventually recommended that she resort to a cortisone shot to get some relief from the pain. Sharyn and her family relocated to Caloundra in 2008 and Sharyn took the physio’s advice and went to a GP to have the cortisone shot, which unfortunately was injected into a nerve. This dramatically increased the pain level to a severe nine out of ten, which rendered Sharyn incapable of working in hairdressing. She then tried six weeks of acupuncture – once again, with no relief. It was at this point that Sharyn was told about Scenar therapy by her hairdresser, who claimed she and her family had found it to be very effective. Having never heard of Scenar Sharyn was initially sceptical, but she was desperate for pain relief, so she rang and booked a block of three treatments. After the third treatment the pain level had dropped to around three out of ten. Amazingly, one month after the final treatment the pain was completely gone, and after nearly six years has never reappeared, even though she went back to cutting hair. Sharyn was thrilled by how well Scenar had worked and sent her husband along as he also had elbow problems. Three Scenar treatments later, his pain was totally relieved. Sharyn was subsequently treated successfully with Scenar for an Achilles sports injury and migraine headaches. But what is Scenar and how does it work? Sharyn explains that SCENAR is an abbreviation for Self-Controlled Energo Neuro Adapative Regulator. It’s a Russian invented medical device with a 40 year track record as a valuable therapy in Russian hospitals and elsewhere in Europe. Our bodies have the capacity for self-healing and the Scenar treatment kick-starts the healing process. It switches you on! The device is placed on the skin and emits an electrical signal similar to our nerve signals. It uses biofeedback to communicate in real time with the c-fibres of your nervous system, helping to re-establish the connection between the problem area in your body and the brain. This in turn releases not only endorphins which are pain relievers, but also neuropeptides, which are the body’s internal pharmacy. This not only provides pain relief, but often appears to stimulate repair as well. The results tend to be long-term and sustained. The number of treatments required varies with the condition and each person, but acute problems tend to resolve within one to three treatments, whereas chronic issues may take a little longer. It is non-invasive, painless and natural to the body.

INTRODUCTORY

Sharyn was so impressed by this therapy’s effectiveness that after much research, she decided to train as a Scenar therapist. She wanted to share this amazing therapy with others to help them find pain relief. She has finally opened her new business, SCENAR Caloundra.

Ironman World Championship

localevent

comes to the Sunshine Coast in 2016

The Sunshine Coast will host the first ever IRONMAN World Championship held in the Southern Hemisphere. The World Championship is the pinnacle event in the global IRONMAN 70.3 calendar and will further strengthen an outstanding triathlon event portfolio in Queensland. The announcement is the result of a partnership between the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council and IRONMAN.

WHY MEN’S FITNESS with Richard Fogarty

Welcome to WHY Men’s Fitness this month and we’re talking about WHY Winter Workouts. For most of us, winter and workouts never go together year in and year out, and there are a lot of issues that winter brings that change our mindset when it comes to WHY winter workouts. We see it every year and it seems to be a ground hog year, where through the summer we can get out of bed early, have the energy and motivation to train and keep fit and then after all the hard work is done, along comes winter. We seem to follow the lead of the bear and find a cave in winter and hibernate. This is where it’s so important to try and change our mindset when it comes to working out in winter. I’m no expert and I understand everyone has their own way to deal with workouts in winter, but over the years I’ve concluded that the most important way to stay consistent with working out is to train hard and regularly throughout the months we’re at our most energetic and motivated. My personal routine to keep up with fitness through the winter months is to try and work out every second day in a good cardio workout, and on the other days just do things I enjoy that keep me warm (power walking while listening to music, weights session indoors). For example, I’d be doing some hard workouts on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with an easier lot of workouts on the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and resting on Sunday. When I mean easier workouts, it means doing things I enjoy, rather than thinking of getting up each day to grind away at the same workouts through the winter months. It’s difficult enough as it is to keep a consistent workout routine over winter, as the hardest thing for most people is finding the motivation to get out of bed to work out.

The Sunshine Coast and Queensland region is regarded as one of the world’s leading triathlon centres, with the hosting of the annual IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast (1314 September 2014), the iconic Mooloolaba and Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festivals and prior hosting of International Triathlon Union (ITU) series and championship events. The South East Queensland region plays home to current IRONMAN® 70.3® World Champion Melissa Hauschildt, IRONMAN® 70.3® Asia Pacific Champion and Olympic gold medalist Jan Frodeno, IRONMAN® World Champion Pete Jacobs and IRONMAN® World Champion medalist Caroline Steffen, among others. “We are delighted to bring the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to Australia,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of IRONMAN. “Asia Pacific is a rapidly expanding region for our sport, particularly the Sunshine Coast and Queensland, both hugely popular strongholds for the IRONMAN brand.” “The region has a significant history in the sport of triathlon and is a popular destination that we know will deliver a world class event while providing genuine warmth of hospitality,” Messick added. The World Championship event expects to attract 3,000 athletes from over 70 global qualifying events in locations such as Australia, Japan, Spain, England, South Africa and the Americas. The Championship is part of a week-long festival which will include the IRONMAN® 70.3® Sunshine Coast race and a range of lifestyle events for the community and visitors to enjoy.

So get a routine and stay consistent – that’s the key. Richard Fogarty, Business Owner / Youth and Family Mentor / Inspirational Speaker /Fitness Coach / Life Coach www.richardfogarty.com, www.sunnykids.org.au

askuswhy

why... WARM UP?

Ask us

why?

We all know that warming up is important in sustaining good and thorough workouts, but how many of us actually listen to the experts? As far as working out goes, it’s common to find fitness fanatics who skip this brief but vital part of the workout. Is it because time is of the essence, or is it simply that they’re not completely aware of the value of this short time?

Investing time in a decent warm-up is rather important in a number of ways. It assists in gradually building up your heart rate, encouraging circulation and mentally preparing you for the task that follows. A good warm-up allows your body temperature to steadily rise in the hope it will activate all your muscles. Take a car, for example – in the cold of winter it needs time to warm up before you begin to pursue the drive. Same goes for your body! In the chill of winter, your body requires this time to allow maximum productivity. Still not buying it? Take a look at these facts: Blood Circulation – by progressively easing your body into the warm-up, it will allow circulation into your working muscles, therefore pushing you to perform better in the workout. Heart Rate – it gives your heart the time to prepare for the increase in activity. Oxygen – it circulates oxygen through your body and ensures you will not become out of breath as quickly. Reaction – it will allow you to wake up and be better able to comprehend the activities you’re undertaking. Joints – it will allow your muscles and joints the time to prepare and will lubricate them, therefore lessening your chance of injury.

why... CACAO? Cacao (pronounced cac-cow), not to be confused with cocoa, is a rich chocolatey superfood, full of flavonoids and antioxidants. Not only does it taste amazing, the good news is there are loads of wondrous health benefits to making the chocolate switch. Here are a few interesting points… Cacao is chock full of therapeutic benefits and could easily be considered one of nature’s best medicines.

Cacao is considered a ‘super-antioxidant’ because it has such a high ORAC score (a measure of antioxidant amounts). The unprocessed raw cacao bean earns a higher ORAC score than acai berries, spinach or blueberries. The high antioxidant activity helps protect the heart, prevent cellular damage, and keeps us looking and feeling younger (bonus!). The super bean contains oleic acid, which has been linked to lower cholesterol. Cacao is also a great source of magnesium, which helps with calcium absorption, metabolism, and protein synthesis. It may also be useful in the prevention of or treatment for congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes, and premenstrual syndrome. Cacao also contains iron, copper, calcium, potassium, and zinc. Why would you eat boring old chocolate again when you can have the same rich chocolate flavour, but with a tonne of health benefits thrown in?

You’ll perform better, have time to wake up and sustain fewer injuries. It’s clear warming up needs to be on the agenda before every workout session.

why... SUSHI? Sushi comes in such a staggering variety that many menus offer a pictorial glossary to help you order. Because of this diversity, the nutritional value of one roll to the next can vary. In general, fish provides a lean source of low-calorie, high quality protein. It’s also low in saturated fats and cholesterol, making it a heart-healthy food choice. Salmon is especially high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to improved cholesterol levels, lowered blood pressure, and decreased risk of abnormal heart rhythms. Mackerel, lake trout, herring, and tuna also have omega oomph. The thin sheets of seaweed, or nori, which are flattened, cut, and wrapped around maki and hand rolls, contain mighty minerals. Iodine, essential for proper hormone function, is abundant in this dried sea vegetable. You’ll also get the benefit of magnesium, calcium, iron, and antioxidant phytonutrients and folic acid from eating rolls wrapped in nori. Some traditional sushi rolls made with raw fish, vegetables, rice and nori -- which is a type of seaweed -- are low in calories. For example, a salmon cucumber roll contains just 231 calories and 4 grams of fat, while a mackerel roll has about the same calorie count with only 2 grams of fat. A shrimp roll provides 199 calories and 0 grams of fat. To make the calories you consume even lower, start subtracting ingredients. Remove the fish to make a veggie roll to bring the calorie count down to 170. Avoid tempura, or fried sushi, as well as spicy sauces made with mayonnaise, as they both increase the calories.

Family!

BFresh is passionate about sourcing and supporting specialty products and produce from boutique Australian businesses.

MYKONOS MIX OLIVES

COLD-PRESSED JUICE

STRAWBERRIES

Tas and Dimitri are brothers whose family has been marinating olives and feta for over two generations. Their grandmother grew up in a little town on the outskirts of Mykonos, so it was an easy choice for the brothers to create this combination in her honour.

Or as we refer to it, “Living Juice”. These jars are full of goodness to nourish your body and assist you in your daily commitment to being healthy.

The Stothart family has been growing strawberries for over 40 years, starting with 2500 plants and growing to 800,000 plants over 50 acres today.

The recipe passed down through the generations is bursting with flavour, with fresh herbs, garlic, fennel and Grandma’s secret sherry vinegar blend. They quickly became a new favourite for us here in the deli. Tas and Dimitri are passionate about quality and travel yearly to visit the producers in Greece and Sicily to see the crops and discuss the harvest. Everything is made to order and done by hand, the old-fashioned way. We love that.

GREEN What a great way to fuel your body with all the things we sometimes don’t have time to eat. ROOT An old favourite with a bit of spice. As beetroot is a stamina booster, it’s great just before a workout.

The Bosma family (BFresh owner/ operators) came to know of the Stotharts when living around the corner from them about 25 years ago. Anthony Bosma has memories of his dad loading up boxes of strawberries and distributing them to local businesses down Morayfield way. This was just the beginning.

IMMUNE Tis the season in which we could all do with a boost, or simply because it’s yummy.

With the opening of BFresh 20 years ago and each strawberry season since, the Stothart farm in Bellmere, west of Caboolture, has always been our first choice for strawberries for our customers.

No waiting for this trio of Living Juice – they’re all pressed up and ready to go from the cafe daily. They’re served in funky jars which can be recycled back to BFresh if you want to be part of the BFresh eco experience.

This season the quality of berries is at a premium, with the weather conditions perfect for producing sweet juicy fruit. If you’re like the team at BFresh you’d better grab a second punnet, as the first one doesn’t make it home.

Meet our

Family… Rhianon Taylor

Tell us your BFresh story? I started working for BFresh at the beginning of the year after job searching for a workplace that was really passionate about what they do and how they treat their staff. I found what I needed here at BFresh. What do you love about BFresh? I love the environment, the attitudes, personalities and the people that you work with. It is a really personal place. Everything is fresh and healthy which is really hard to come by. What’s your favourite BFresh product? My favourite product would most definitely be our cold press juices. They are new, fresh and healthy.

Want a body like

Hugh Jackman? The training system that can do this has arrived on the Sunshine Coast

45 minute sessions Want a body like Hugh Jackman? Tired of the same old work-out routine? Then why not try a training system personally developed by Trainer to the Stars – Luke Istomin which is now available here on the Sunny Coast. The launch of the first F45 training studio in QLD came from local residents, Sonny and Laura. Sonny being extremely keen on pushing his own physical boundaries, has always had a passion for looking at ways of motivating others. “Some people find motivation to live healthy lives easily, but for most it is a difficult to stay motivated and commit longer term. There are many reasons for this and I have been constantly searching for a style of training for myself that is challenging, motivating, social and would work in with a busy lifestyle. It is difficult to go past a training style that combines the best of everything.” High intensity interval training is arguably the number one style of training at the moment as it is the ideal workout that suits our busy lifestyles. Many of us are time poor nowadays and our expectations of results are greater than ever. This is exactly why HIIT is attracting everyone’s attention. In a typical F45 training

Holistic functional movement patterns Innovative training methodology Unbeatable results Live DJ session you can expect to burn up to 800 calories through a combination of strength, cardio and resistance, hence why it has been widely accepted by both men and women of all ages and varying fitness levels. Excitingly for both the trainers and participants, is the man behind the workouts, Luke Istomin. Together with F45 Training Luke has designed the training sessions available at F45 Training Mooloolaba. This style is simplistic, yet ahead of its time in many ways. As health education improves, the fitness world has become more focused on body fat composition and less on weight. Hence the bathroom scales have become obsolete in this revolution. All recent scientific data suggests that interval cardio and strength training are the most effective methods of burning fat and building muscle. Group training has exploded over the past few years as well as the emergence of a style of training

fitnessisbusiness our next launch we will be bringing Craig Harper to the Sunshine Coast to speak at our special ‘Launch Lunch’ event. Of course who can forget the recent visit from Steve Willis AKA ‘The Commando’. If you have a health and fitness business and you are not doing these kinds of programs or events, you absolutely should be. It’s easier than you think too.

FITNESS IS BUSINESS with Jen Forster

One of the most fun aspects of operating a fitness business were some of the joint ventures and special events/programs I created. Things like beginner triathlon programs, running challenges, the ‘Beat the Bunny’ corporate challenge, amazing races, guest speaker events, charity events, you name it and I did it! Not only is this a fantastic way to give your clients something new and different to mix up their training and or education but it is also a great way to leverage your profile and expertise and better yet, have you ‘stand out from the crowd’. Oh and did I mention how much fun it is too!

First of all, think about it as if you are solving a problem. When I created the ‘beat the bunny’ corporate challenge it was to solve the problem of people being pulled off track from their health and fitness journey by the lure of Easter eggs. How often over this time period does one egg turn into two and then into ten and before you know it, two weeks are ‘written off’ and you have to start over. This challenge was created as a distraction to this. It went over a period of 5 weeks, and was open to teams of two people. Each week I would distribute a list of ‘challenges’ (challenging a celebrity to a push up competition, climbing various mountains,

washing cars, walking dogs, caddying for golfers, volunteering for a charity and other crazy things) that each team had to complete before the end of each week for points. Each challenge was worth an allotted amount of points and each challenge required photographic evidence of the team both wearing a pair of rabbit ears! It was so much fun and can you imagine how many times over five weeks, 30 people were seen running around the Sunshine Coast wearing rabbit ears!! Not to mention the craziness that went on via social media! It was fantastic exposure for my business and loads of rewarding fun for my clients. So what could you create that would solve a problem, make being active fun for your clients and create massive exposure for your business. I am happy to spend 30 minutes with you if you would like some help with this. Drop me an email if you would like to catch up at jen@whyfitness.com.au

Winter: THE NATURAL WAY TO MAXIMISE YOUR WORKOUTS AND YOUR HEALTH! by Gary Martin ND, Living Valley Springs Health Retreat

18 ISSUE 14

feature In many societies, winter is known as the workout season. Most highpace contact sports are played predominantly in winter. In colder climates, people ski and ice skate, not to mention ice hockey. The obvious advantage is the warmth that’s created by exercising. However, winter exercise can do far more than warm the body. During a season when many people tend to hibernate in artificially heated houses, those who work out throughout the season tend to avoid colds and flu, while promoting heart health and weight control. Winter workouts also significantly promote longevity. A 40 minute walk every day can do more for one’s long-term health than all the efforts of many doctors and their medicines. I believe there are eight basic principles for achieving and maintaining optimal health. These include pure air and proper breathing, sunlight, temperance and self-control, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water and trust. In many cases we have found that regular exercise is more important than all the rest, including dietary content. Regular exercise seems to cover a multitude of violations. People who eat all the wrong foods but consistently exercise appear to enjoy a greater level of health than those who eat all the right foods but never exercise. Obviously those who prioritise exercise and eat right enjoy the very best of health all-round. Early walks on a chilly winter’s morning can be confronting. However, the positive effects are immeasurable. Not only does it burn calories at a faster rate than in the warmer months, but it also improves circulation, immune function and blood sugar control and provides protection against heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Exercise can also help you look great – younger, fitter and thinner,

especially during the season when many people tend to put on a few pounds. The ultimate weight loss program involves a serious reduction in carbohydrate intake, a moderate consumption of protein, a high intake of good fats and the performance of consistent, regular exercise. It’s best to do two or three one hour resistance workouts per week and daily 30 minute walks. Strength training improves bone density, joint function and muscle, tendon and ligament strength, while aerobic exercises improve heart and lung fitness, flexibility and balance. Stretching is also a brilliant exercise for increasing flexibility, range of motion and circulation, while reducing stress and alleviating lower back pain. Regular exercise has also been linked to cancer prevention. According to the Seattle Cancer Research Centre, 35 per cent of all cancer deaths are related to inactivity. Exercise enhances blood flow to the brain, possibly reducing risk of stroke. It also improves reasoning and memory. Regular exercise arouses the brain and slows down degeneration of the central nervous system. It improves sleep patterns and promotes a more fulfilling sex life, while combatting impotence. “Those who cannot find time for exercise will have to find time for illness.” The Earl of Darby. Several years ago we attended to a guest who weighed 180 kilograms. He was the minister of a church in a country town and he had been unable to perform his duties for a long time. His obesity was responsible for many secondary complications including diabetes, sleep apnia, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. He was heavily medicated and had spent most of his time in bed, for at least six months. The ministers of all the other churches in that town appealed to their congregations to raise funds so that they could send this poor man and his wife to Living Valley Springs for therapy. Being unaware of the appeal, he was shocked when informed that he and his wife were going to Queensland for ten days of naturopathic care. He was reluctant to move from his bed, but felt obliged to accept

the gift, considering the generosity of so many people. On arrival, this incapacitated warrior declared that he did not want to be here. We employed a range of light exercises, a low carbohydrate, cleansing diet, herbal medicines, steam saunas along with a multitude of remedial therapies, including colonic irrigation. On day seven of his program we had planned to take a number of guests to the top of Mount Cooroora in Pomona early in the morning. By that stage our warrior was doing quite well. He had lost a significant amount of weight and he wanted to come on the climb, if only to make it to the lookout just above the tree line. Five staff were assigned to help him, and they made it to the lookout in less than an hour. At that point he declared that he wanted to go all the way to the top. It took him over three hours to climb a distance that would normally take around forty minutes. On arrival at the summit he declared, “If I can climb this mountain in my condition, I can do anything!” He later wrote to me stating that Mt. Cooroora was the turning point in his life. On completion of his therapy program, he returned to his town, leaving over ten kilos in Queensland, and having adopted a balanced diet of health promoting foods. Within three months he lost a further 35 kilos. On arrival home he arranged for his entire congregation to meet at 6am every morning to accompany him on a seven kilometre walk - rain, hail or shine – even through the cold winter months. After three more months he had lost a total of seventy kilos and felt fantastic. His blood sugar levels and blood pressure were optimal and he no longer required any form of drug medication. Later that year he invited me to his town to conduct a health lecture. The auditorium was filled to capacity with people who came because they had witnessed such a dramatic change in their beloved neighbour. He also asked me to address his congregation on the Sunday morning. Later, some of his members told me that they used to see large portions of their pastor poking out either side of the pulpit when he was preaching. Now they could only see his upper body and head. It is unfathomable how quickly the human body can recover from the brink of death when the right conditions are applied. We should never underestimate the power of regular exercise. www.lvs.com.au

Coast local Andy Owen has been on a mission to help raise much needed funds for the Leukemia Foundation and his great mate. He took the challenge on board willingly and succeeded spectacularly. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with him to discuss his recent paddle for a cause. A great paddle boarder, a contagiously happy guy and among all things a great mate, Andy Owen demonstrated what it means to care for much loved friends. He decided to stand up paddle board from North Bondi to Mudjimba, hoping to raise up to $100,000 for the Leukemia Foundation. The idea for this journey came about when one of Andy’s close work mates, Nigel, was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). This disease is one of the varying blood diseases that affect the ability of the body’s bone marrow to create

mature blood cells. This means that these cells don’t develop correctly and don’t function as normal ones would. Nigel’s battle has been ongoing, and he has recently sold his house in Bondi to pay for his second bone marrow transplant. As the disease is fairly rare and Nigel’s case is troubling, the idea for Andy’s journey evolved. With the voyage being almost 1100 kilometres long, Andy and his two kids, Sommer and Darcy, tackled the mission as a family. Each morning, the group rose at about 6am and Andy was in the water around 6:30am – 7:30am. The kids hit the road and followed their Dad along the coastline. Andy averaged approximately 35 kilometres a day; however, it varied depending on his physical state. His longest paddle was 58 kilometres and his shortest, 29 kilometres. Gliding along the water, it became a daily occurrence for Andy

to come across sea creatures, having spotted whales, dolphins, turtles, a little shark and lots of sea birds. He says the oceans were kind and it was a blissful experience out on the water. Andy kept on travelling even in times of great physical fatigue. He said, “The victims in the leukemia ward don’t get a day off and therefore neither will I.” He arrived at Mudjimba on 20 July to a warm welcome from family, friends and well-wishers. The month-long journey was an act of great selflessness that many will never forget. Andy has corresponded with the Leukemia Foundation and is looking into getting TVs installed in the children’s wards with all the money raised. Andy Owen simply defines what it means to be a great mate. To help Andy reach his $100,000 goal, go to www.bigpaddleleukaemia.com/blog WHY FITNESS 21

FINDING IT PAINFULLY COLD TO TRAIN THROUGH WINTER? FEELING SLUGGISH AND UNMOTIVATED? COULD YOUR BODY TEMPERATURE BE TOO LOW? FIND OUT WHY!

But my thyroid test was normal?

Having a low body temperature will have you rugged up more than your buddies, making excuses to stay in bed, and doing anything to get out of taking a dip in the pool. Before you know it, winter passes and you’re way behind in your training progress. A number of health risks can lower your body temperature, making it, for some, excruciatingly painful to expose themselves to the elements this winter. The great news is that it’s easy to fix! Sluggish energy or fatigue, low motivation, trouble with your weight, fluid retention, foggy or low mood, hair loss and low hormones are also symptoms that can occur with excessive sensitivity to the cold. If you’ve suspected your thyroid, and had it checked, only to come back normal anyway, you may have been on the right track, but with the wrong test. Your thyroid could be the most common cause of a low body temperature, but keep in mind that the thyroid doesn’t just play up on its own, there’s always another cause. Your Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is the most typical and only test your doctor may choose to do to check your thyroid function, and if you have a real and obvious thyroid condition or disease, this will generally be abnormal, leading to further thyroid testing. However, if your TSH is normal, you could still be suffering with Subclinical Hypothyroidism or Wilson’s Syndrome, which is a mild form of low thyroid function, which can wreak just as much havoc for your body temperature, metabolism, hormone balance, mood issues and energy levels, and will not be picked up with TSH testing alone. There are a full range of tests that should be done to fully examine your thyroid health, and without these, this very common condition can go undetected for years. Once you have a correct diagnosis, finding out what to do about it is the next step. Triggers for Wilsons Syndrome can be stress induced, dietary, hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiency, and each individual can vary greatly. Finding these triggers is as simple as organising follow up blood testing over a range of nutrients and body functions to find the cause easily, and is often very quickly resolved.

Chiropractic Matters with Dr David Hendrey | Hendrey Chiropractic

MEDICAL JOURNAL RECOMMENDS CHIROPRACTIC AS FIRST MEANS OF TREATING BACK PAIN We all want to get back on track as quickly as possible when we’re injured. Your medical doctor and your chiropractor both want the same thing – to help you heal as quickly as possible and get on with your life. The Journal of the American Medical Association now recommends chiropractic as a first means of treating back pain. This recommendation has been made following a recent study in the medical journal Spine. The study involved people suffering with low back pain who received standard medical care. Half of the people also received chiropractic care. Of those receiving chiropractic care, 73 per cent reported that their pain was gone, compared to just 17 per cent of those who didn’t receive the chiropractic care. The chiropractic profession and medical profession are working together in the best interests of the patients, and the big winners are the patients. Both practitioners must complete over 6000 hours of university study to graduate. The medical doctors must do extensive studies of pharmacology and how the body responds to a wide range of medications. The chiropractors undergo numerous hours of anatomy, biomechanics and neurology studies to understand how the body responds to a wide range of hands-on techniques. The spine is an engineering masterpiece, with 24 moveable vertebra providing flexibility for the body and protection for the central nervous system. Chiropractors focus on the function of the spine and nervous system to get you performing at your best.

TIPS FOR WINTER RUNNING Three tips for winter running 1. Organise warm clothes the night before your morning run. 2. Keep warm and rug up during warm-up and cool-down (trackies and jumper). Don’t let your body get cold, even if you’re sweating. 3. Summer bodies are earned in winter months, so just get out there and run – it’s not that bad! During winter, motivation for running can be lost. Most of the time it’ll be dark and cold in the mornings and afternoons because we have fewer daylight hours. However if you prepare for it, it can be enjoyable. Funnily enough, a lot of people love the winter for running – you get to rug up and work out hard without sweating like crazy. Even though it’s cold, it’s still important to hydrate. You might not feel thirsty, but a little sip every now and then is what your body needs. Tight fitting garments like compression skins are designed to stimulate blood flow to the muscles, and on some occasions they reduce muscle tightness and soreness. We’ve also found them useful in helping to regulate body temperature. Drop in and see your local sports store – they’ll be able to help you with brands and sizes etc. It’s quite easy to fall off the healthy eating wagon at this time of year. We tend to favour warm dishes to keep us toasty. However, most of these are served with bread or are pasta and rice-based. We have to remember they’re very dense in carbohydrates. But the great thing is there are alternatives to these. Try quinoa, basmati rice and high fibre pasta and keep the servings small.

WHY HAVE A WEBSITE? When opening a new business, making a website is probably one of the last things on your mind. Yet in most cases, having a website can be more beneficial to your business than you think. One of the main factors is that your business will always be accessible, whether it’s 2am, Christmas Day or whenever. The internet is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This means that your business will always be open to the customer, rather than having them limited to your opening hours. This is also more beneficial for the business owner, as the website is always there for you – to answer your customers’ questions or collect their feedback on your behalf. If you do it correctly, your website will be the best tool in promoting your business. It could essentially become an online shopping window, accessible to possible customers all over the world instead of just the locals in your area. This means they’re able to dictate when they buy your products, no matter what hour of the day or night it is. The more up-to-date your website is, the better the impression it will make on your customers. If you have a good website for your business, this could cause customers to think your business is larger and could even level the playing field between your business and its more established competitors. Without a website, your business is decades behind in the internet world. Your business will be more likely to survive if you have an online profile, such as a website, Facebook page, Twitter or LinkedIn. If your business is not active online, it is unlikely it will be noticed by anyone outside of your local area.

Tennis Matters with Tyson Thompson | Tennis Queensland

NUTRITIONAL IMPORTANCE IN TENNIS

Ready? Play.

The physical activity from tennis provides the backbone for good health, but when combined with a solid nutritional plan, the end results become even greater. Nutrient-dense foods are associated with lowering the risk of developing diseases, plus they increase energy and wellbeing. By eating and receiving all the nutrients you need, you’ll help your body to function optimally, which is especially good if you’re training, playing or competing on the tennis court. A good rule of thumb for tennis players is to go for ‘real’ foods that are fresh and minimally processed. Processed foods have typically been stripped back, dehydrated, grinded down, cooked, or pumped full of preservatives and artificial chemicals, simply so that they last longer and are more conveniently consumed. These processes rob them of many nutrients and their health benefits. Another key component of a healthy tennis lifestyle is hydration. Staying hydrated is crucial to healthy living, considering the body is comprised between 55 and 75 per cent water. While in extreme circumstances we can survive weeks without food, we’d only last a couple of days without water. This is because water contributes to almost all of our bodily functions – it helps regulate body temperature, removes wastes and toxins, assists in the circulatory process, maintains the health of cells, moisturises the skin and protects against disease. Hydration becomes even more important when playing tennis – our fluid levels need to be replenished more rapidly and regularly because we’re sweating more. By keeping your food and hydration in check, not only will your on-court performance improve, but your offcourt performance can benefit for years to come. For more information about tennis on the Sunshine Coast, please visit www.tennis.com.au/sunshinecoast

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS GROUP TRAINING IS THE KEY! If only we could stay tucked under our warm fluffy doona all winter and pop out in spring looking trim, taught and terrific! Well, guess what, you CAN’T and before you know it, you’ll soon be basking in the sun saying, “OMG, where has this year gone?” Living on the beautiful Sunshine Coast means that by midAugust you’ll start to show more skin as that beautiful warmer weather is making a comeback. Avoid having to cover up with baggy clothes to mask those unwanted extra winter kilos that may have crept on, burst into spring as your most confident self and hit that beach early with pride!

I can feel my muscles! I feel great! I LOVE it!

Stopping your exercise completely throughout winter can do more harm than good. Whether due to illness, injury or just because you think it’s too cold, when you miss several workout sessions, the muscle and strength you have worked so hard to build will actually weaken with each passing day, due to lack of use. The time frame for muscle loss can occur fairly quickly. You may start losing muscle mass as quickly as 12 days after ceasing exercise. At the two week point, you can lose up to 80 per cent of the muscle mass you’ve gained. While every person is different, missing out on your resistance training exercises can have an effect in a matter of weeks. The good news is that the better conditioned your muscles were prior to ceasing training, the quicker you’ll regain your strength, due to muscle memory. One of the greatest ways to prevent this happening in the first place is to get involved in group training. Group training capitalises on the social benefits of maintaining an active life as much as the actual workout itself. We’re more motivated to exercise if we have social support for being active, so joining a group exercise class or a weight loss program is a great way to ensure you’re continually motivated and supported, so you don’t fall off the workout wagon!

FEAR NO MIRROR ™

WINTER KILOS BE GONE! Fat reduction is becoming increasingly popular amongst Australian people. With the constant improvement of technology, a new and improved method has been created by Harvard scientists. The CoolScuplting system is the only non-surgical body contouring treatment that freezes and eliminates stubborn fat. With the successes of this technique, a new applicator has been introduced called CoolSmooth. Coinciding with the CoolScuplting system, this applicator is the very first non-surgical solution that has been clinically proven to reduce outer thigh fat. The nonvacuum based cooling easily treats non-pinchable fat bulges and the comfortable design adjusts to fit each individual patient.

BEFORE

Photos by Eric Bachelor, MB FACS (Single side treatment, no weight change)

Scientists have run multiple tests to ensure this product works correctly. After completing a number of trials, they discovered that due to the high success rate & equally high customer satisfaction rate, customers have raved about the comfort and success of the product. Patients also noticed visible fat reduction after just one treatment and in turn would highly recommend the CoolSculpting procedure to a friend. CoolFit also features a flat vacuum applicator cup. This addition allows the physicians to better treat fat reduction and reach areas which otherwise wouldn’t have been touched such as inner thighs and arms. Patients often ask if there is a way to deal with fat on the underside of their arms which they can’t seem to budge with exercise and diet alone. The good news is there is now a proven non-surgical option for them to consider. The CoolSmooth and CoolFit applicator work together to reduce fat on the inner and outer thighs. Many women have been thrilled with results and are no longer fearful of stepping in front of a mirror.

Triathlon Matters with David Chick | Allez Sport Mooloolaba

WHAT NOW? Australia’s largest marathon has been and gone for another year. Well done to so many of our customers who took on the challenge of the full and half marathon at the Gold Coast Marathon, and came through with PBs or ran their first half or full marathon. By now, the immediate “never again” or “why am I doing this to myself?” thoughts and physical pain have probably been long forgotten. For many this leads to the inevitable, “Ok, so what do I do now?” This itch needs to be scratched! It’s important to set a new goal to chase. It’s a great feeling to have dedication to your training program and the buzz from race day is hard to beat. Fortunately for all of us Sunshine Coasters we have the Sunshine Coast Marathon to follow up with in August, and you’ll benefit from the training mileage already logged from the Gold Coast. In recent times we’ve noticed a strong trend towards event travel. Pick a running event or a triathlon somewhere you’d like to travel to, and combine the event and the holiday together. Our family has just settled on doing the Honolulu Marathon at the end of the year and then taking in the Pipeline Masters on the North Shore of Oahu afterwards, but the sky is the limit with this sort of holiday, depending on your desire to travel and your budget. Following the Tour De France is another very popular option these days and it remains one of my best holidays ever. Unlike most holidays, I actually came back fitter than when I left. The main thing now is don’t lose motivation postevent, and waste the fitness and training you’ve already done. Get the event calendar out, pick an event, enter it and start focusing on the next challenge. P.S. Don’t forget sunscreen, even in winter.

WHY TRAIN IN THE WINTER? Inevitably, we traverse many seasons during our lives. This issue, as we navigate winter, we’re also influenced by change related to the financial year, school, work, family and many others. Our bodies may be colder but so too, our ardour for maintaining positive routines may cool for a myriad other reasons. Our lives are a series of seasons or transitions for which we prepare, endure, embrace and move on from. These transitions require us to adapt and maintain physical and mental resilience. Winter training is often overlooked. That robust mind and body we honed over summer takes a back seat as we prepare to hibernate. Through exercise, our bodies enjoy a range of positive physical and chemical processes, which in turn make us feel great about ourselves. Endorphins produced during periods of increased heart rate contribute to a feeling of wellness and positivity. Inactivity precludes these chemical processes and we crave alternatives to this natural lift. While sugar or caffeine-laden foods like chocolate provide a quick high, inevitably it’s followed by an equal low.

Cass and her twin brother Ritchie on their 40th birthday. Cass trains with Katrina at Simply Fit for powerlifting. She is currently in Australia’s top 20 women powerlifters.

Our lives are a series of seasons or transitions for which we prepare, endure, embrace and move on from. These transitions require us to adapt and maintain physical and mental resilience. Rather than fight the cold, try taking a moment to stop and breathe in that cool air. Take stock and review the various seasons you are in. It’s winter, so check you’re still getting exercise, fresh air and lots of water. If life is hectic, find time to exercise regularly and have down time. Take the time to notice and respond as nature does. Get out there and enjoy the cool. Don’t over-think it. Just enjoy.

JODI CHAPMAN A Naturally Guided Life If you meet Jodi Chapman today it is literally impossible to believe that this beautiful young woman, who is the epitome of health, could have at one point in her life relied on medication to simply get through every day. But this is exactly how life was for Jodi from the age of seven. Why Fitness had the pleasure of chatting with Jodi recently to discover what can only be called “a naturally guided life.” Jodi was born and raised in the western suburbs of Sydney. Along with her older brother and younger sister, she lived a life of an adventurous tomboy in her early years. For Jodi, playing outside in the dirt outweighed playing with Barbie dolls every time without fail. However, the fun and innocence of her childhood changed quite suddenly when she reached seven years of age. From this time 40 ISSUE 14

and right through her adolescent years she was struck down with unbearable migraines, sometimes on a daily basis. The constant and strenuous pain ruled her life for the next decade. Jodi awoke daily with agonising migraines. At the time, the only known solution for this issue was painkillers. To simply get through each day meant taking medication on a daily basis. Having been a straight A student up until the age of 14, it came as a shock when the drugs began to affect her ability to concentrate and succeed at school. Through grade nine and ten, Jodi required a tutor to assist her with her schooling and it was only through this help that she was able to maintain her high level results. Already on eight painkillers a day and other medications, by Year 11 things began to overwhelm her.

Jodi missed almost half of Year 11 and was called into the principal’s office to discuss her absentee rates. She was told she would either have to repeat the year or drop out. Repeating was not an option in Jodi’s mind so she chose to drop out. The real world now lay before her and with little other choices for a young woman, Jodi decided to study a secretarial course. Now 18, funding her medications became her responsibility and required her to take two jobs, one with a local specialist Allergist and the other at the pub, in order to pay the $140 of weekly medication costs. It was during this time she met her then husband. With her personal life flourishing and her health diminishing, life delivered another blow when her mum passed away suddenly. This shocking loss left Jodi simply shattered.

localsuccess

Within a week of her mum’s passing, Jodi was covered in psoriasis and within a month she had developed Ulcerative Colitis bowel disease. The stress and health deficiencies made her life a real struggle and she was hospitalised in a few short weeks. Still fighting the headaches and living on pain killers, she had another massive dose of cortisone added to her cocktail of medication to fight the new diseases that had emerged in her body. The next three years of Jodi’s life consisted of medication and continuous trips to the hospital; with no light at the end of the tunnel in terms of a prognosis that would see her health improve. With her health a mystery to conventional medicine, the universe delivered. Through what can only be described as a bizarre twist of circumstances, Jodi came upon a mysterious health practitioner. This man had no formal qualifications but simply his own research and theories. With nothing to lose, Jodi took a chance and gave this new treatment a go. After just one appointment with this man, all of Jodi’s health issues simply stopped. She was blown away, experiencing a feeling of wellness that had escaped her for almost two decades. Not knowing why but trusting her gut instincts, she decided to spontaneously stop taking her pills and medications. Before the appointment with the mystery healer, Jodi had been consuming 12 of one type of drug a day and the sudden absence of it in her system caused withdrawal symptoms. However, she believed that her new found healer was getting results that conventional medicine had been unable to achieve and she pressed on. Prior to this, she was feeling as if early death was inevitable. Pills, drugs and unproductive days ruled her life and she simply hated it. The promise of a life of wellness spurred her on. Continuing on her expedition to drop the medication, Jodi continued her appointments. She would leave bruised and swollen from his unconventional methods of pressured massage; however, her stomach issues were healed in a few weeks and her headaches were gone

not long after. Jodi herself cannot explain how but what she did know for sure was that the bruises were nothing compared to the pain she had faced with the diseases that had cursed her body her whole life. Inspired and motivated by her new healer to study natural therapies, Jodi took a leap of faith and enrolled in university. Searching for a course was brief as the minute she laid eyes on Health Sciences, she knew the pathway she wished to take. The options for her major consisted of PE teaching, nursing and counselling. Being not too fond of these choices she chose counselling, through a process of elimination. It was at the orientation day that she was informed a naturopathy major was being introduced. She could not believe

Jodi’s life has been guided to bring her to what is absolutely her true passion and purpose, naturopathy. Her knowledge and understanding comes not simply from books but from finding her own way out of a life of disease. that the universe once again was guiding her on a path of purpose. For the next 12 months, Jodi studied full-time and managed a full-time job as manager of the pub. With time flying by, Jodi and her husband also made the decision to have a baby the next year. As she was in her second year of university when Amber was born, she needed to spare herself some time and therefore dropped back to part-time work at the pub. Whilst caring for her newborn, studying and working, Jodi began to do massage therapy from home. Life was becoming a balancing act, and a sea change and relaxed lifestyle lured her new family to pack their bags and leave Sydney for the Sunshine Coast. With four subjects to go at university and a new baby, Jodi decided to take on a new business. Whilst the business did not work out the way

she had planned, her uni life was also on the brink of disaster being put on hold, only to then spend 4 years running a struggling business. She then discovered she only had three months to complete the course before it closed, which meant she would have to start over. Not deterred by a challenge, Jodi took it on and completed her degree with utter grace. She then built another business in Buderim with her qualifications from the degree in naturopathy. The new business simply boomed. She had hired rooms at Suncoast Fitness and within three months required a receptionist, within six months needed to renovate the premise and within 12 months needed to hire another nutritionist. It didn’t stop there either! As the business kept growing, she was forced to move to another office and hire another receptionist. The expression “things happen for a reason” cropped up all through Jodi’s life. You could say Jodi’s life has been guided to bring her to what is absolutely her true passion and purpose, naturopathy. Her knowledge and understanding comes not simply from books but from finding her own way out of a life of disease. These days she enjoys running her business, Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre, caring for her family and training with a close bunch of friends to compete in triathlons and Ironman. To add one final success to her life, Jodi is on the brink of releasing a book sometime this year. This book will undoubtedly help many people to get their health back on track, and in doing so maybe find their purpose too, just as Jodi did. We asked Jodi to share some tips to anyone facing health challenges or wanting to make changes to their lifestyle. Jodi says: Always consider yourself, care for yourself as much as you do your loved ones. Don’t burn the candle at both ends; give yourself downtime. Be aware of your own mental and physical capacity. Know what food/diet suits you and stick to it Keep work/play balance. www.advancedwellness.com.au WHY FITNESS 41

CRAIG HARPER CRAIG HARPER IS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S LEADING PRESENTERS, EDUCATORS, COACHES AND COMMENTATORS IN THE AREAS OF HEALTH, FITNESS AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND HAS BEEN A RESIDENT COLUMNIST WITH WHY FITNESS MAGAZINE SINCE OUR FOUNDATION ISSUE. WE’RE VERY EXCITED TO BE BRINGING CRAIG TO THE SUNSHINE COAST TO BE GUEST SPEAKER AT A LUNCH FOR OUR LAUNCH EVENT FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. (DETAILS ARE BELOW).

So who is Craig Harper? Craig has been an integral part of the Australian fitness landscape since 1982. In that time he has worked as an exercise scientist, corporate consultant, professional development speaker, university lecturer, AFL conditioning coach, radio host, TV commentator, writer and successful business owner. In 1990 Craig established Harper’s Personal Training, which over the last 24 years evolved into one of the largest businesses of its kind in the world, completing over 80,000 personal training sessions annually. Craig can be heard regularly on the ABC, SEN and LIGHT FM radio stations in Melbourne. He can also be seen weekly as the host of Foxtel’s Living Life Now, and for three years he filled an on-air role on Network Ten’s 9AM morning show as their resident fitness expert and life coach. As well as having authored five books, Craig is also the driving force behind Australia’s most successful personal development website – craigharper.com.au If you ask Craig to describe what he does, his reply is that he’s a self-help motivator, educator, ex-fat kid, radio personality, precocious only child, author, international presenter, TV fitness bloke, high-performance coach, realist, philosopher, teller of crappy jokes, entrepreneur, innovator, business owner, exercise scientist, cheesecake-aholic, wanna-be alpha-male warrior and possibly the world’s worst singer. In a world where coaches, educators and motivators are hellbent on convincing you that creating your best life is all about buying into their philosophy, their program and their products, Craig Harper is an anomaly. Craig’s not about convincing people that he’s the answer to their problems; in fact, he knows he’s not. He teaches you that you’re the solution (and the problem). He teaches that lasting change is a process which works from the inside out, and that too many people try and fix the internal stuff with external solutions. He’s kind of blunt, challenging, honest, silly, amusing and confronting, as well as periodically offensive, but he knows what works and if you’re genuinely ready to change, perhaps you’ll connect with him. “It doesn’t matter how hard we look for a solution, when we’re looking in the wrong place.”

Craig believes that anyone can create amazing change and incredible results in any area of their life in a relatively short period of time, if they’re prepared to get a little uncomfortable, see old things in a new way and open their mind and heart to a different way of thinking and being. “The biggest obstacle to our success is not our life situation, environment, education, genetics, time availability, parental support, bank balance or God-given talent – it’s US. Our attitude, our thinking, our destructive habits, our excuses, our procrastination, our inability to make significant decisions, our amazing ability to blame, our fear, our pride, our ego, our apathy and our laziness. It’s not about what’s going on around us, it’s about what’s going on within us. Once we start to change how we see ourselves, we start to change our reality.” Craig Harper is an average bloke who has an amazing perspective on life and living, a bloke who believes that success doesn’t happen to us or fall on our head; we create it. A bloke who believes that success has nothing to do with fate, destiny or chance and everything to do with attitude, passion and action. “If you want to be like everyone else, then do what everyone else does. If you want to be exceptional, then do exceptional things,” says Craig.

CRAIG HARPER COMES TO THE SUNSHINE COAST, 9 AUGUST Join us at an exclusive lunch and be part of Craig’s ‘Renovate Your Body and Renovate Your Life’ key note presention. Dark Chocolate Raw Cheesecake

BASE 2 cups raw walnuts 7-8 madjool dates 3/4 cup raw cacao powder 2 tbsp of melted coconut oil 1 tbsp of pure maple syrup Pinch of Himalayan pink salt FILLING 2 cups of cashews soaked overnight in water 3/4 cup raw cacao powder 1/2 cup melted coconut oil 1/2 cup of coconut cream (thick white top) 1/4 cup 100% maple syrup 1 tbsp gelatine dissolved in ½ cup of water TOPPING 2/3 cup raw cacao powder 1/3 cup melted coconut oil 1 tbsp of 100% maple syrup 1/2 tsp of vanilla Pinch of Himalayan salt METHOD Line your choice of tin with baking paper. I have used a smaller based tin to make a deeper filling or you could use a standard spring form tin to get a large, but flatter cheesecake.

BASE 1. Place all base ingredients into a food processor and pulse until combined. Press the mixture together between your fingers to see if it sticks together. You will want it slightly sticky. 2. Press mixture into the prepared lined baking tin. 3. Set aside. Time to make the filling. FILLING 1. Place cashews into the food processor and blend until the mixture resembles a cake batter. Be patient. This may take 5-10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile… Prepare the gelatine mixture in a small cup or bowl. Sprinkle the gelatine over 1/2 cup of water whisking with a fork as you go. Set aside for a few minutes. Place the cup with gelatine mixture in a bowl of hot water and whisk with a fork until you have smooth consistency. 3. Once ready, add the gelatine to the remaining ingredients and process until mixture is smooth and creamy. 4. Pour chocolate filling on top of base and place in the freezer for 1 hour to set. TOPPING 1. Place all ingredients into a small jug and whisk until it comes together like melted chocolate. 2. Pour over the top of the cheesecake working quickly as it will set on the cold cheesecake. Smooth around the sides if you wish. Keep in fridge until ready to serve.

Pt Cartwright – running on the beach is challenging and great strength training. Noosa National Park – running around the National Park preparing for long runs.

They are both picturesque and challenging and they encourage me to make the most of every morning, even on those chilly days. Cath Gardener 0419 796 684 lazyrunnerscoast@gmail.com
