Editor’s Note with Jen Forster

Welcome to the brand new, summer edition of Why Fitness Magazine! Yes, that’s right! You can now look forward to wrapping your hands around a bumper issue to kick off each change of season on the Sunshine Coast! We are just so excited about this! We will be bringing you more of what you love, more of what inspires you and more of what’s new in everything fitness, food and fun on the Sunshine Coast. It’s sensory overload this time of year. Sand, sun, surf, sweat, sunscreen, socialising, surprises and of course Santa! The summer holidays on the coast, I believe, is a huge part of the heart and soul of all who call this amazing place home. One of my personal philosophies in life is to do what lights you up. Whatever it is, go and do that. Do it with passion, with enthusiasm and with all of your heart. I really believe this is the true secret of success. This issue is all about summer success strategies that will help you kick butt at what you love over the holidays. Someone who many believe lived his life this way was Australian Cricketer, Phillip Hughes. As tragic and sad as it is to have lost this young man from the world, I want to believe that Phillip lived his whole life doing what he loved and what lit up his soul. If there is any comfort to take, it’s that he did this until his last breath. We would like to dedicate this issue of Why Fitness Magazine to Phillip Hughes. #putoutyourbats Thank you Sunshine Coast for your continued support of Why Fitness Magazine. I am absolutely blessed to be doing what I do, living where I live and loving who I love. On behalf of the amazing Why Fitness team and my family, I wish you all a safe, happy, fun and active holiday season and encourage you all to do what makes you come alive in 2015.

9 Ways for Anybody (or Any Body) to Train Like a Pro this Summer by Henry Hound

Not everyone can rise to pro levels. Even yours truly has enough humility to know that these days I can’t always sprint down the street like a greyhound; it’s more like a nice beagle trot. But that doesn’t mean I can’t train like a pro racing dog to achieve my personal best! You too, can get the best from your body and exercise routines with these trends recommended and practiced by the pros themselves. 1. FUELLING YOUR MACHINE Pros have it made with support staff providing nutrient-rich nourishment, before and after workouts. They know to fuel their bodies 30-45 minutes right after exercise for optimal recovery. You too, can prepare your nutrient super foods for before and after your workouts to maximise your results. And do make sure you drink enough water to keep your body well hydrated and your moving parts well lubricated. 2. THE GOAL, NOT THE GOALIE You don’t have to enrol in a sport or gym and be a star, but like the pros, set a goal or a purpose to your exercise program – and enjoyment is a valid one too! Plan for what you want to achieve with each session or routine. Maybe it’s skill building, strength, endurance, speed, flexibility or just pleasure. 3. RELEASE THE TRIGGERS Tension is part of our busy lives and it gathers in your body and muscles. The pros use myofascial release, which is a fancy name for deep muscle relaxing work. You can do it easily with a foam roller, massage stick or even a ball. By rolling it along your body in a smooth fashion, you can check for any

tightness, muscle knots or pain. Then roll it out until it releases and relaxes. This adds suppleness to your body so that tension doesn’t prevent movement. Do this before and after workouts for best recovery. 4. MINI BANDS ADD MIGHT Pros recommend mini bands for muscles and joints. They work because the band’s resistance makes muscles contract and that helps your joint stability. Recommended movements are the vertical pull. You stand on a band, pull up overhead, then down to a T-form, up again with a shrug and repeat. For strong glutes, put the band around your legs above your knees and bring your knees in and out, using your glutes and core. Keep chest up, feet firm. This helps protect you from injury too.

7. SLEEP FOR MUSCLE GROWTH You’re not lazy when you get your proper sleep, the pros will all confirm this! Muscles are in that anabolic place during sleep, which means that’s the state for optimal muscle growth. Recommendations for quality sleep are seven to nine hours a night, especially if you have a full day of regular work along with your training. 8. EQUIP YOURSELF You don’t have to invest in expensive trainers or facilities, but pros use great equipment. Ensure that what you use suits you and fits you well – shoes, bikes, clothing, balls. This enhances your movement and prevents injury. Be sure to replace any worn out equipment. 9. COMPETITIVE SPORTS

5. VARIETY IS THE SPICE The pros are not always in their chosen season, and often participate in different activities and routines during off times to keep their fitness. They vary the intensities and the routines which help maximise potential, lessen injury risk and keeps interest and excitement strong. 6. REST AND RECOVERY The pros just know how to listen and tune in to their bodies. Like them, don’t ignore something that seems wrong and go see your healthcare professional. Your body also tells you that rest intervals are a major necessity to give yourself a full recovery after workouts. Recovery periods are essential for the best quality outputs – the maximum outputs or the most power or force you can produce.

Participating in a sport offers some of the best routines for posture, balance and agility and improving reflexes. You can participate in a sport that fits your schedule, day or night these days. But even if you don’t play competitively, you can take a page from their training manuals. From basketball, do real or pretend hoop shots – squat and jump up. Squats are always considered the very best of all body exercises. From soccer, toe touch a soccer ball or use a pretend soccer ball like a stair, and hop and switch feet. Pump arms too. From boxing, release any tension and aggression and box, even shadow box – stepping side to side, pumping your arms. You don’t have to be a pro to train like one. We all have an inner athlete – it’s all about training right for you to reach your own personal best! WHY FITNESS 7

HAYLEY LEWIS:

8 ISSUE 17

feature

Dream, Believe, Create! Hayley Lewis’ gold medal performance began at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. Her swimming career spanned 14 years, with her signature race becoming the 800 metre freestyle. Since hanging up her togs and goggles, Hayley has gone on to host the Australian version of The Biggest Loser, write a business book called Dream Believe Create and has also opened a gift and homewares store called ‘Coming Up Roses’ in Brisbane. Hayley visited the Sunshine Coast as a guest speaker for the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation’s ‘Successful Women in Sport’ Lunch. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Hayley to find out what success means to her. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? My greatest success is by far my two boys. I am most proud that I can juggle a small business and motherhood and have confidence that I am doing both successfully. My boys are confident young men which makes me feel as though I have done a great job (along with my husband Greg) raising them. WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ALONG THE WAY? The best thing that has happened to me has been the significant people I had in my

life when I was a young girl swimming. The inspirational people I looked up to (Tracey Wickham) and the motivational and positive coaches and mentors I had throughout my life have played a significant role in the way I now approach life and its ups and downs. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OR OBSTACLE YOU HAVE OVERCOME? The greatest challenge was the death of my sister who was a person I looked up to and was able to call upon for guidance and motivation. A challenge from a non-personal perspective was definitely starting my own swim school in 2002. WHAT IS THE MOST GRUELLING TRAINING YOU HAVE UNDERTAKEN? The most gruelling training was my entire swimming career. I can’t remember many training sessions that weren’t difficult. I never did any land based work or gym so it was just pure swimming. WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT BEING A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE?

had nothing else in my life to focus on during those years so swimming was everything which added to the pressure. WHEN WAS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? My proudest moment was making the Sydney Olympic team in front of my 2yr old son. I wasn’t expected to make it so winning the 800 free was a moment I’ll never forget. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR LEGACY TO BE? I’d like to be remembered as a great mum and a kind person. WHO INSPIRES YOU? Successful women in business inspire me. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE? Simply be prepared to ‘work hard’ and if disappointment arises, give yourself 24 hours to chill out before you start stressing out!

The most difficult thing about being an athlete is the disappointments after all the hard training that is put in. It was sometimes difficult to bounce back from a swim meet that didn’t go to plan. I

WHY POSTURE? with Zach Bruton, Exercise Physiologist WHAT IS POSTURE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Physiotherapy Nutrition & Dietetics Podiatry Exercise Physiology Remedial Massage & Dry Needling

WHAT AFFECTS POSTURE?

Put simply, posture is how you balance your body. It describes how your body is positioned when you are standing, sitting, lying down, even exercising. Good posture means the force of gravity is evenly distributed through your body so that no particular structure is overstressed. Poor posture means an increased wear and tear on your joints and muscles due to an uneven distribution of gravity. Poor posture can cause back and neck pain, spinal dysfunction, joint degeneration and a pot belly. Posture is not just how you look but it can actually affect how long and how well you live. People who move well and have good posture age better!

Factors such as occupation, recreational activities, obesity, modern technology, personality/emotions, and any trauma or injury you may sustain throughout your life, be it physical or emotional, can affect your posture. Given the many factors influencing posture it is no surprise that the majority of people will at some point in their life experience some kind of musculoskeletal dysfunction or pain as a result of poor posture.

Psychology Counselling Personal Training Equine Therapy Baby Care Advice Pre & Post Natal Classes Musculoskeletal Rehab Classes Older Adults Classes Stretching & Stability Classes Pilates Yoga

HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE? Being mindful of your posture is a good start! Undergoing a full postural analysis from an Accredited Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist can be beneficial in identifying any postural imbalances/deviations. Strengthening of certain muscles, such as mid and lower back, shoulder setting, deep core muscles and gluteus medius is often required, while soft tissue therapy (massage), self myofascial release (foam rolling) and stretching may be necessary for other muscles, such as chest, hip flexors and hamstrings. More often than not it requires a combined approach incorporating healthy eating, exercise, posture awareness and some lifestyle changes. If you would like more information regarding posture and exercise, healthy eating, lifestyle modifications or massage please call us or come in and see us at Suncoast Health & Wellness.

Baked leg hams are an impressive addition to any Christmas feast, and each year we like to create a different flavour. This time we have decided to do an Orange Maple Whiskey Glaze, which we glaze and bake in-store and hand carve on-site as well. By using our whole smoked leg hams that we sell from the deli year round, customers know they’ll be getting a great quality ham off the bone, with a delicious twist. You can pre-order whole or half leg hams, glazed or traditional, or opt for sliced portions, to complete your perfect Christmas dinner.

Pudding Lane makes all their puddings by hand using a family recipe and only the finest ingredients. Made in Australia using Australian fruit, they offer a delicious variety of flavours including Chocolate Rum and Raisin, Date and Toffee, Macadamia and Brandy or Triple Choc. As well as their Classic Pudding and a gluten-free option, we have dessert covered with these deliciously moist puddings with that home-made feel. As they’re beautifully presented, they also make a fantastic gift or an impressive item to offer your party hosts.

If you’ve been to BFresh lately, you’ll already know about our impressive range of delicious salads. We have plenty of healthy options to choose from, made fresh daily, such as the Roast chicken and Pumpkin salad (pictured). For carefree catering with portion sizes from two to twenty people, why not pre-order your salads today for your Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Meet our Family… Julia Tait, Gourmet Grocery Tell us your BFresh story? I have been at BFresh for ten years now. In that time I have had two children. During this time I also began baking slices for the café and still do to this day. What is it you love about being a part of the BFresh family? I love that it’s so friendly, I love all the products and I really love it when customers come in with recipes and ask for our help to find the ingredients they need. I love to cook myself and being at BFresh has taught me so much about using fewer ingredients to create healthier dishes. What is your favourite product? I don’t have just one, I have many! Matthew Montague WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? Completing a marathon in two hours and 59 minutes. Recently, creating a great community social running group (Glasshouse Mountains Running and MTB Group). HOW DID YOU KNOW THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? I have never been 100 per cent sure marathons are what I want to be doing. However, I do quite enjoy the suffering towards the end of a marathon. It’s weird, I know. WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ALONG THE WAY? Glass House Mountains Running and MTB Group has allowed me to meet with complete strangers and help them be the best they can be. Assisting others to achieve their goals is such a joy. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OR OBSTACLE YOU HAVE OVERCOME? Overcoming bowel cancer at 30 years of age was a massive obstacle and turning point in my life. My biggest realisation through this time is that we shouldn’t take anything for granted, especially our health.

12 ISSUE 17

WHO INSPIRES YOU? She will most likely laugh at this, but my wife Monique. Nothing is ever too hard for her and she completes everything punctually and effortlessly. She continually supports me in everything I do and has the ability to find the best in everyone. As controversial as it may be, my sporting inspiration is Lance Armstrong. His story is a good one and I feel some connection towards him. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE? Stop the excuses and get out there and do it. The good always outweighs the bad, so there is no point finding a reason to give up. Change your mindset from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I will!’ WHAT’S YOUR WHY? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? There is something about the feeling I get from running. The morning of the run and the day that follows is always great. I find any problems that are hanging on a knife’s edge are simply a breeze to overcome. Helping others and seeing the smiles on their faces is just priceless. I encourage everyone to help someone with no will to receive something in return. It’s an awesome feeling!

Training for Success!

Carmen Johnson WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? Losing 50kg over the past three and a half years.

HOW DID YOU KNOW THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? I’ve always been overweight and wanted to change that. I’d never had a specific number of kilos in mind to lose, but knew I needed to lose weight in order to be the healthiest version of myself. I stopped fighting with myself and changed my focus from being solely about weight loss. When it became about more than just a number on a scale, things started to fall into place. WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ALONG THE WAY? I’ve regained confidence, I’m obnoxiously happy and I’m ridiculously in love with my life. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OR OBSTACLE YOU HAVE OVERCOME? My greatest challenge was always food. I’m more conscious of implementing strategies to ensure I don’t have too much of a good thing, particularly at social events. Re-educating myself about what I thought I knew about nutrition has been an interesting learning curve, too. Ignoring the negative comments I sometimes faced after choosing to make myself and my health a priority was also a challenge. WHO INSPIRES YOU? Anyone who is willing to step out of their comfort zone and face a challenge headon. People who have a ‘no excuses’ attitude and are willing to take ownership of a situation in order to overcome it. If I had to name someone specifically, I’d say someone like Paul de Gelder. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE? Be open about what you’re doing. The more people who know about your goals, the more accountable you are. Get a good support system. For me that meant friends, family and working with an awesome PT. Find something you love doing; it makes it easier to continue doing it. WHAT’S YOUR WHY? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? I do what I do because I love the way it makes me feel. I’ve done things in the last year that I wouldn’t have been able to do only a couple of years ago, before becoming fitter and healthier.

Natalie Jenkinson WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? My greatest success has been representing Australia at the Olympic Games in judo and representing Australia at the Oceania Games in boxing. HOW DID YOU KNOW THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? I never really knew that’s what I wanted to do. I just knew that I liked the fighting sports, I was good at them and wanted to be the best at something. It was just a natural progression, I guess. WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ALONG THE WAY? There have been numerous things which have been fantastic in my sporting career – getting the opportunity to travel around the world, meeting different people and experiencing various cultures have been fantastic.

14 ISSUE 17

However, the pinnacle of my career would have to be the opening ceremony at the Olympics in my home country. The feeling of walking out into the arena in front of a packed house and being viewed by millions around the world cannot be explained. I was so proud. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OR OBSTACLE YOU HAVE OVERCOME? For me my greatest challenges have come from injuries. If I wasn’t overseas competing, I was getting an operation on my tattered knees and shoulders. Ironically, just about all my injuries have been from others sports that I played when I was having a break. Other than this, I think self-doubt has been and always will be a challenge in my life. WHO INSPIRES YOU? The person or people who inspire me the most in not only my sporting career but

my life in general would have to be my mum and dad. They supported me not only financially but emotionally. It’s not easy to be involved with any athlete coming into competition, especially two fighting sports which require cutting weight and vigorous training. Training for Success!

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? Placing fourth at the Ironman World Championships, Kona, Hawaii, in the under 24 category. HOW DID YOU KNOW THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? Someone asked me, “What would you do if you won one million dollars?” I answered, ‘Have a crack at being a professional triathlete.” I then thought, “Why do you have to be a millionaire to follow your dreams?” You don’t, you’ve just got to have passion and dedication. Alan Watts has an amazing video I recommend everyone watching (What If Money Was No Object?). WHAT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ALONG THE WAY? I’ve inspired several of my friends to take up the sport and the support I have from my friends and family is unreal! As well as receiving messages through my athlete Facebook page (Damien Collins’ Adventure Unearthed) from people I’ve never met, saying that through the videos I make that I had inspired them to train harder and stop making excuses to train. That’s a big buzz to think that decisions I’ve made in life have had a positive impact on someone else’s life. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OR OBSTACLE YOU HAVE OVERCOME? Making the sacrifice of a lot of other sports I loved, always having to bail on friends and parties because I’m too tired and my girlfriend and I split up in the early days. One of the big reasons was the time I was putting into training and the sudden random change I had made to my life. (We’re now back together, closer than ever, and she’s just entered her first triathlon). WHO INSPIRES YOU? The best in the sport, I love their stories on how they got there. People don’t just become the best overnight. There’s so much hard work behind the scenes. But if they can do it, it means I can. We’re all the same. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE? Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. Don’t let other people tell you what you can and can’t do, that’s their opinion. You’re the boss of you! WHAT’S YOUR WHY? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO? Why not? I’ve loved the Olympics and dreamed of going there as a kid. I’ve always wanted to be a professional athlete in any sport. Now I’ve finally found something that I have potential in and I don’t want to die wondering. So why not have a crack? I’m healthy and fit, so I may as well take advantage of the awesome life I can live. There are a lot of less fortunate people in life and it feels like a waste to give nothing less than your best.

Mind Fitness WITH VICKIE MAGIC, BUSINESS MATTERS MAGAZINE

Summer certainly is the time for celebration. It’s the time we often want to go to the beach, or for a swim in the pool, but it all depends on who is around. I don’t like how I look in a swimsuit. It’s all very well to say, “What people think of me is none of my business,” and I honestly do think that; however, when it comes to displaying my body publicly, that’s a whole new conversation. I don’t know about you, but I have been saying for quite some years now, “This is it, this is the last year I am going to have weight on me. This is the last year I have to worry about how I look at the pool and the beach.” Why is it that some of us seem to be able to keep the weight off and some of us seem to not be able to get it off? Are we kidding ourselves? Do we really eat like a bird, or is that only in the public view? I, for one, have been kidding myself for the last, mmmmm, probably eight months. I had lost 25 kilos in total over the few years, on off, on off, on off, yo-yo, yo-yo, yo-yo, up down, up down, up down, good bad, good bad, good bad. Argh! Even I gave up believing me when I said, “This is it.” So why is it different for me this time? Why am I absolutely positive one hundred and fifty million per cent that I’m going to lose all of my weight over the next few months, and even more positive that I’m going to keep it off?

to eat – I was sad because of the clothes not fitting and the photo, so I might as well eat, I’m going to be fat forever, right? Seemed a valid reason in that moment. I woke up in the middle of the night and I said there and then in that moment, “ENOUGH! I don’t want this to be me anymore, this is NOT WHO I AM. This is not who I want to be.” From that second everything has changed for me. I have not eaten one thing that isn’t good for my body

right petrol (food); it just runs smoothly. I wouldn’t even consider putting sugar in my petrol tank, but here I was consuming more sugar, more rubbish that my body could ever use. The nutrients I am feeding myself now are certainly agreeing with me, the weight loss is actually now just a secondary benefit, I love feeling so energetic. I honestly can’t imagine going back now. I can’t put my finger on why I CAN do this now, and why I COULDN’T do it for the last eight months, but I think it starts with having that realisation that this just can’t go on, and that this just isn’t who I am, or who I want to be or indeed, how I want to feel. Everything starts and ends in the mind; our minds are our friends sometimes and our enemies other times. However if we never ever give up, if we stay clear and focused on what we want, I believe that we will eventually succeed in whatever that is.

What’s more I feel amazing – I haven’t felt so alive, so full of energy, so comfortable. Eating healthy is like giving my car (my body) the right petrol (food); it just runs smoothly. Seven Success Strategies for the

Summer Holidays

TRADITIONALLY SPRING IS THE TIME FOR CLEANING, FOR CLEANSING THE SYSTEM IN PREPARATION FOR A FUN TIME IN SUMMER. ACCORDINGLY, SPRING IS ONE OF OUR BUSIEST TIMES OF THE YEAR, AS PEOPLE FLOCK TO OUR WELLNESS CENTRE TO DETOX AFTER A LONG WINTER. MANY PEOPLE TEND TO PUT ON A FEW KILOS IN WINTER AS A RESULT OF EATING MORE CARBOHYDRATES AND STAYING INDOORS. SPRING IS ALSO A TIME WHEN FITNESS BECOMES A PRIORITY. WITH SUMMER ON THE HORIZON, MOST PEOPLE WANT TO GET INTO SHAPE BEFORE EXPOSING THEIR BODIES ON THE BEACH. HENCE OUR FITNESS TRAINERS ARE RUN OFF THEIR FEET IN SPRING, AND OUR GYM IS ABUZZ WITH PEOPLE PANICKING WITH URGENCY TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS. WELL, SPRING IS GONE AND SUMMER IS HERE, BUT EVEN IF WE NEGLECTED TO DO THE SPRING CLEAN THING, IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO GET INTO SHAPE FOR A SUCCESSFUL SUMMER SEASON.

feature

With a huge variety of outdoor activities available in summer, it doesn’t take long to make up for a neglected spring. However for some, December can be a time of year-end stresses, office parties and festive foods, with little time for exercise. Then January comes along and one fails to enjoy the holidays as one should because of a physically depleted state at the end of the year. Well, with the application of a few simple strategies, we can start our holidays in a state of optimal health and achieve maximum enjoyment. Then return to work refreshed and ready to take on the world for another year.

1. Breathing It may sound too simple, but many people suffer with sleep apnoea, asthma, bronchitis and other breathing disorders. It’s important to breathe through the nose (in and out) as much as possible, especially when sleeping. The nose is designed to filter, humidify and condition the air. It also regulates the flow of oxygen in and carbon dioxide (CO2) out. Oxygen stresses smooth muscle tissue while CO2 relaxes it. Mouth breathing distorts the flow, causing CO2 levels to drop too quickly. Thus smooth muscle tissue is subjected to more stressing than relaxing, resulting in elevated blood pressure, muscle pains, respiratory complaints and other disorders. Many people tape their mouths at night to promote nose breathing during their sleep.

2. Sunlight Sunlight reacts with cholesterol in the skin to produce vitamin D3, a potent hormone that is involved in just about every bodily function, including the metabolism of calcium and the maintenance of healthy bones. Summer is the time to build up reserves of this vital vitamin. Expose the skin to the sun for a minimum of 20 minutes

each day, without getting burnt. Sunlight kills bacteria, hardens bones, increases serotonin - the mood regulator, increases glycogen which feeds muscles, regulates blood pressure, modulates cholesterol, lowers triglycerides, increases blood volume, improves respiration, boosts the immune system and modulates blood sugars.

3. Temperance By all means go to the parties, but exercise self-control. Alcohol will deplete muscle integrity like nothing else. High carbohydrate, festive foods will put on the weight while reducing the capabilities of the immune system. Overeating can also be a trap for the unwary. Self-control is the key!

4. Rest Most of our repair and maintenance is performed at night, when we are asleep. In the absence of light our pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin, which is indeed one of the most potent antioxidants produced in the body. Studies performed by the Simmons Bed Company showed that melatonin secretions are far greater during pre-midnight sleep than they are during the hours after midnight, irrespective of what time one goes to bed. This may be why pre-midnight sleep has often been referred to as ‘beauty sleep’. Try a few early nights and feel the difference it makes.

5. Exercise The Earl of Darby once wrote, “Those who cannot find the time for exercise will have to find the time for illness.” Professional contact sports are usually played in the winter. Summer, however, is the season for sailing, swimming, surfing, diving, canoeing, cycling, cricket, tennis, horse riding, dancing,

archery, basketball, beach volleyball, bushwalking, etc. Exercise energises the body, regulates the appetite, clears the mind, strengthens the heart and reduces joint stiffness. It replaces fat with muscle while decreasing the resting heart rate, blood pressure and blood lipids. Exercise increases respiration, circulation, muscle tone, elasticity and blood oxygen levels.

6. Eating Right Eating too many of the Christmas dainties can result in runny noses, sore throats and fatigue. The fun that should be experienced during the holiday season can be hampered through over-indulgence in the wrong foods. Adopt a successful eating strategy and stick to it, even at the parties. Avoid the processed carbohydrate foods.

7. Hydration We need to drink a lot more water in summer. Dehydration is a common condition experienced by those who neglect to drink water during the warmer months. The greatest need of the body on rising is hydration, so have a good glass of water first thing every morning. Then keep it up all through the day. It is best not to dilute digestion by drinking water with meals, but it is vital to top up regularly between meals. Thirst is not a reliable indicator, so include regular water drinking in your list of strategies for a healthy summer season. Prevention is better than cure. By applying success strategies to your lifestyle this summer you will avoid illness, tiredness and disappointment. Make the most of the outdoors. Enjoy the national parks, the beaches and the rivers in the best state of Australia. Remember, life is a gift. Relish it! www.lvs.com.au

THE KEY TO YOUR FUTURE! MEET CHRIS: Athlete Chris has now been training for the past four years and has adopted a healthy lifestyle. Chris has his sights set on his first triathlon in 2015. Here’s what Chris had to say about the Resolve Wellness Key. “Setting a new personal best time is one of the most rewarding aspects of running. But what happens when you reach a plateau? Resolves Wellness Key can help you break through that barrier by using its technology as a powerful training tool. “Your Resolve Wellness Profile allows you to link your run tracking app and replicate your favourite runs at the gym. Insert your Wellness Key into a treadmill, choose the Exercises tab and select a previously saved run. A map of your route appears on the screen displaying your time, distance, pace and calories burnt. Hit Start and you’re away. The map has markers at each kilometre giving you visual progress through your workout. Raise the pace and race against your previous time. This sets a challenge and creates a personalised training experience. “Eliminate factors that might hinder you reaching a new PB or even keep you from running on any given day. Add some core exercises to your cardio day. Utilise Resolve’s equipment and accessories to blast your core before you jump on the treadmill to clock your kilometres. “Resolve’s state of the art technology is the key to exceeding your limits.”

MEET COLLEEN: Super Mum How does the Resolve Wellness System help you achieve your overall wellness goals? “I access the Wellness System almost every day from my iPad or iPhone; I love having access to my program day or night. It’s a fantastic way to track my daily progress, to see how many moves I completed each day and monitor my training effectiveness. “It’s so easy to fine-tune my program as I become fitter and stronger, and I can create new mini programs and track their effectiveness. For me the Wellness app is extremely motivational. The way it’s set up clearly shows how effectively I’m working and tracks how I’ve trained. When I’m pushing to reach 100, I feel a great sense of achievement when it tells me that, “you have trained like an athlete.” In addition to tracking my program, I will also track any class that I attend and I can simply add in any running and training performed outside of the gym. “The Wellness System in itself will motivate you to push yourself and to reach your ultimate maximum capacity. I love being able to input other activities from outside the gym and also linking apps like ‘my fitness pal’ to get the entire healthy living package. Track your healthy eating and your daily activities to make the best lifestyle change for the healthiest you,” says Colleen.

Allergies, intolerances and It might not be what you think. What does this mean? Allergies, intolerances and sensitivities are immune responses that can be to anything such as food substances, colourings, preservatives or additives, environment toxins, pollens or insects, chemicals, moulds and even medications. In fact, a negative immune reaction can become a reactant for you at any time to absolutely anything. Allergies or intolerances can be immune responses passed on from birth, or can develop over your life through periods of stress, compromised immune responses or gut disease processes such as infection or inflammation.

response. Mostly, the symptoms are chronic and

In some cases the symptoms are acute and quite severe, making it quite obvious that you’re having an allergic

list. So don’t assume this doesn’t affect you, as it could

cause low grade inflammation, which lead to disease processes in your body that you consider are normal signs of aging, though they are not. More severe cases may result in anaphylactic reactions which can be life threatening. Most people believe that if they don’t suffer these types of symptoms, they don’t have allergies. Having tested over 2000 people for food allergies, I’ve found that every one of them has come back with at least a few, with more than 90 per cent having a hefty be the reason that you’re just not feeling 100 per cent.

So, what can you do? STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

Remove your current allergens to reduce the risk of new sensitivities developing. Comprehensive food allergy testing that’s highly specific, covering all types of allergy responses rather than just one type at a time, is only available in two laboratories in the world and we’re lucky enough to have one right here in Australia. Food allergy immediately affects your fluid levels and can have a delayed response lasting days, which in turn affects your electrolytes, causing cellular energy to diminish. Keeping off your allergens will keep your energy levels and brain functioning optimal, keep your body at your correct metabolic weight, reduce oedema, puffiness and cellulite and reduce muscle or joint aches and pains. Continuing to eat foods that are allergens will keep your gut wall inflamed, allowing more foods, currently not allergens, to pass through the gut wall and become new allergens. This compromises your immune system forever, leading to chronic disease and early aging.

Check your gut flora. Bacterial or fungal infections, which are picked up through travelling or passed on from other people through contact or through colds and flu, release toxins, causing inflammation of the gut wall. This compromises the cells known as gap junctions, allowing for food particles to slip into the blood stream. This activates the immune system, alerting it to the presence of foreign particles, which then signals immune complexes to mark that food particle as danger, resulting in the beginning of a food sensitivity. You then not only have the immune response to deal with, but the added symptoms associated with bacterial infection such as chronic recurring colds and viruses, depression, mood disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. A healthy gut bacterial balance is a crucial step to building strong foundations in your health and protecting you from food sensitivity.

Check your hormones. Food allergy responses can cause hormonal disruption, as the immune system and the endocrine system are closely linked. Not only can you cause hormonal imbalances such as infertility, miscarriage, PCOS, menopausal symptoms, PMS, migraine or hormonal acne from food sensitivities, but the response can be a two way street. Hormone disruption caused by other factors, such as taking the oral contraceptive pill, Implanon, HRT, hormonal creams, Depo-provera injection, Mirena or suffering with stress can all lower your DHEA, which increases your sensitivity to food allergens. It can become a vicious cycle leading to depression, anxiety, insomnia, memory loss, fatigue, weight gain, osteoporosis and some hormonal cancers.

26 ISSUE 17

whywellness

d sensitivities... What might you be experiencing? Typically, you’ll initially have signs of fluid retention, weight gain, mood problems such as irritability, depression or anxiety, fatigue, lack of happiness or motivation, lack of focus and concentration, poor memory or chronic stress. Allergic responses also present themselves as hives, rashes or other skin conditions, asthma or digestive problems, bloating, pain or nausea after eating food, sinus and hay fever. Allergies can also be the underlying cause or at least contribute to symptoms of ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders and other more severe mood or behavioural problems. Allergies have also been found to be one of the biggest causes, due to their inflammatory nature, of dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, narcolepsy, cataplexy, fluid retention, severe fatigue conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroid conditions, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, circulation problems, auto-immune diseases, hormonal imbalances, infertility, stress, toxicity, nutrient deficiencies which lead to further allergies and much more.

STEP 4

STEP 5

Reduce stress. Whether it be emotional, physical or biochemical, stress will cause your body to produce the hormone cortisol, producing inflammation. With long term cortisol production comes gut inflammation, leading to food particles being able to penetrate the gut wall into the blood stream, producing new food sensitivities. Cortisol production also causes inflammation of the joints and the eventual irreversible breakdown of the cartilage in the joints, leading to osteoarthritis.

Exercise. Exercise not only releases endorphins, making you happy and reducing stress, but also keeps your muscles pumping and your lymphatic system functioning, which moves excess fluid out through your kidneys and flushes out toxins. Exercise is also a great way to keep your bowel functioning normally, helping to rid your body of toxins from allergens in the gut. Allergies can cause constipation for some people, whereas for others they may cause diarrhoea. For those having trouble moving their bowels, exercise is a great way to stay regular and keep fluid retention at bay.

Deal with emotional stressors and take measures to reduce your stress load. Keep physical stressors such as excessive workloads, excessive exercise or anything that causes inflammation to your physical body to a minimum. Finally, keep your nutrient levels up with a healthy diet.

MOTIVATION MATTERS BY JESS EDWARDS, U GOT THIS

U got

this!

What is motivation?

The first step towards establishing your goal is working out the specifics and why it’s important for you. If you haven’t already heard of the SMART model, I will define it now so you can set goals using this method. However, we are going to add internal and external factors that relate to your personality too and the big ‘WHY’ it’s important to you. This is the emotional KEY to achieving your goal. Specific: So what is your goal? Write it down! Now, why is this your goal? Where can you go specifically to achieve it and do you feel you will need outside guidance? Measurable: This goal needs to be measurable in such a way that you analyse the needs you have now and measure the results you wish to have in the future. For example: I want to lose 10kgs in three months by training four times a week and changing some poor nutritional habits. Achievable: Your goal needs to be set at a realistic pace. Setting the pace too high at the beginning is likely to throw you out of routine and cause setbacks. Relevant: Your goals need to stay focused and relevant to your needs. Organising your routine and staying true to the focus and planning of your goals will lead to a higher success rate, just by keeping it true and realistic. Time-frame: Give yourself a specific date to realistically achieve this goal. That way, you can remain driven to your daily and weekly routine, knowing that there is a finalised date of accomplishment on your horizon. Now, what is your why factor? This is your internal reason and it must reach your emotional desires to change and have a greater meaningful attachment, rather than a basic need. Example - Basic need: to be fit and healthy. Emotional: I want the confidence to swim at the beach while wearing a bikini and not feel insecure about it. As you can see, the emotional need holds more internal value to help motivate us than the basic need. As for your external stimulus, this is where you find your motivation while exercising. Join a gym. Arrange a personal trainer. Establish an outdoor training routine or join a group training class. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jess Edwards is a qualified personal trainer and self-esteem counsellor. Combining both professions has allowed her to follow her dreams with a business designed to guide and help people see that they can achieve their goals too. “I’ve been overweight and unhealthy before and I know how it feels to be lacking confidence and motivation and to have low self-esteem. This is my ‘WHY’ factor, this is why I have chosen to do what I do,” says Jess.

Do you feel tired and un-motivated ? Do you need the extra push to get you started? Would you like someone to help with your goal planning and structure? Do you need guidance to stay on track until you are capable of flying solo? Do you wish to train indoors or outdoors? Do you have a health condition and need some help to establish a safe method to achieve your goals?

BY DEE MCMAHON, AURA MAKEUP

Summer-proof your make-up! It’s time to face up to the sweaty, humid, hot and uncomfortable times ahead – that’s right, summer is here and don’t we all know it! But the rise in temperature does not have to mean leaving your beauty regime behind. We all know that heavy make-up feeling! To avoid the all-too-embarrassing make-up disaster, we suggest keeping your make-up routine simple and look for water resistant formulas – they will be your best friend. Keeping your make-up light and natural this summer will be the key to fresh-looking skin all day, even in the Sunshine Coast’s notoriously humid heat! So how do you ‘sweat-proof’ your make-up? Select essentials that have staying power, but also make sure the formulations you use are still comfortable and lightweight. Think breathable foundations with a natural finish. Ideally, look for a plant and mineral-based make-up. These are far more gentle on the skin and can even contain beneficial healing properties that soothe ailments and treat skin conditions. Our top picks include: Mineral-pressed powder foundations with an SPF are so easy to apply on the run.

NATUROPATH MATTERS BY JODI CHAPMAN, ADVANCED WELLNESS & BEHAVIOURIAL CENTRE

Can't stop the itch?

Do you suffer from itchy or inflamed skin? Is it worse after you’ve worked out? Does it come on suddenly but never really goes away? Unsure what you’re doing that’s making it worse? Skin reactions are some of the most complex issues to treat, as there are a number of factors that could be at play creating an unpleasant rash or painful lumps in inconvenient areas of the body. Are you experiencing itchiness, redness or uneven skin eruptions? Been told to change your skin cream and wear loose clothing, but it still doesn’t improve? Have you considered it could be because of the foods you eat? You could be making it worse without even knowing! What’s relieving to know is that it could soon be gone if you get yourself tested to find out exactly what the culprit is, and do away with nasty skin conditions for good! If we continually consume foods that our body reacts to over time it compromises the integrity of the gut wall. Have you heard of the expression ‘leaky gut’? That’s the term used to explain what professional health practitioners know to be intestinal hyper permeability, which is a real and serious problem if left untreated. Foods that we eat pass through our gastrointestinal system, reaching the gut to be broken down into smaller particles, ready for absorption of all our necessary vitamins, minerals and amino acids. But if we eat foods our system recognises as inflammatory, that causes damage to the lining of the gut wall, compromising the cells known as gap junctions and allowing for food particles to slip into the blood stream. This activates the immune system, alerting it to the presence of foreign particles, which then signals immune complexes to mark that food particle as danger, resulting in the beginning of food sensitivity. The symptoms we may experience in response to eating these allergenic foods can range from the obvious signs like bloating and indigestion, to skin complaints including eczema, hives, redness and blotchy skin. These can be completely healed if you carry out the correct testing and pathology to identify exactly which foods are causing the distress. Heat, increased body temperature and your regular training routine coupled with tight fitting clothing and sweat are all going to make your skin feel much worse than it needs to, so get to the bottom of it so you can feel your best this summer! Not all food allergy tests are the same. You’ll often find they are a generic assessment looking for a singular antibody presence, when in all likelihood there are a number of different allergic responses that your body is producing. There is only one comprehensive food allergy test recommended, as most other standard testing show only marginal improvements and often show false negatives. The results of this highly specific test have been outstanding. It tests a whole range of household and food allergy reactions, and is the most accurate test available. With only two laboratories worldwide, we are fortunate to have one in Australia.

Are you experiencing:  Eczema  Hives  Red or Blotchy Skin  Unpleasant Rash If you are experiencing itchiness, redness or uneven skin eruptions, it may not be the summer heat and sweat that is the problem. Food allergies can be the number one cause for skin irritations.

Summer-ise your website Now is the time to refresh your website, ready for an even more successful 2015. Attract more visitors, increase your cash flow and improve the overall look and feel of your website with these handy tips: 1. Images – make it more interesting for returning visitors and boost your SEO rankings by updating the images on your website. Add a new slider image or simply update the gallery. 2. Video – being camera shy is no longer acceptable. Shake off that shyness and get in front of a camera and talk about what you do. Put the video on your website – people want to get to know who you are! 3. About you – your ‘About’ page on your website is a missed opportunity. This is where you can tell people why you do what you do. Where did you start out? What got you to where you are today? Write down your story as if you were talking to someone over a coffee, put it on your website and watch your conversion rates increase. 4. Build relationships – these days people aren’t just judging you by the quality of the service or product you provide, or the price. People want to know that you care about the problem they’re trying to solve. Build a relationship with your clients, show that you care through keeping in touch with them via a newsletter, write educational articles and connect through your social media avenues. Give them more and you will receive more. 5. Keep it up all year – make 2015 the year that you do things differently. It’s so much more than a Bootcamp!

ADVENTURE MATTERS BY MELINDA BINGLEY, MAB PERSONAL TRAINING & ADVENTURES

Fun and healthy adventures + fun and relaxing time out Summer time is either an opportunity for fun and healthy adventures in our coastal backyard, or fun and naughty relaxing time out. The million dollar question is, how do you have both?

• BoxFIT • ParkFIT • BeachFIT • TwerkFIT and more! Be part of the energy, support, friendship and fun while you shape up this summer! Locations from Caloundra to Cotton Tree!

The biggest challenge is the temptation of cold beers, cheese and crackers, dipping into a gifted box of chocolates and floating around in a sparkling pool, versus climbing a mountain or going for a kayak. Adventure and relaxation, yummy treats and healthy snacks can go hand in hand. Here are my Top Ten Tips for the most adventurous and guilt-free summer EVER! 1. Drink two litres of water before lunch time and more after lunch. 2. Plan an adventure, (mountain climb, kayak, bush walk) early in the morning or late in the afternoon. 3. If training in the middle of the day, plan a swim within the workout or after it. 4. Do the crime = do the time. Consider every alcoholic drink = 30min run and every chocolate = 100 burpees. 5. If you choose to have a drink, opt for a vodka, lime and soda over wine/beer or add ice to your wine. Try adding sparkling water with lime/mint in a wine glass, too. 6. Plan active adventurous social catch-ups – eg kayak to a destination for a picnic, set up beach volley ball at the beach or go for a group hike. 7. Book into training with a friend, trainer or group to ensure you get it done. 8. Be clear with your intention of each day, the lifestyle you want to live and WHY. Remember, what’s the alternative? 9. Eat to live, not live to eat. Look at all food as fuel – what will it fuel me for? 10. Join in active events in the community; it will fill your diary up with fun things to plan for and around. Enjoy summer all, it really is a fun time of the year to get outdoors, eat lots of beautiful fresh salads and fruit and have time with loved ones and friends. You can kick off your summer in a positive way and still have loads of fun without the guilt. Enjoy the glorious Sunshine Coast that offers such a healthy, happy lifestyle! MEAT MATTERS BY DANNY AND ANGELINE DUNNE, NAMBOUR HEIGHTS BUTCHERY

Summer’s here! Let’s fire up the barbecue!

FIRE UP THE BBQ & SAVE! RUMP STEAK

LILYDALE FREE RANGE

CHICKEN BREAST

So it’s that time of the year again when we’re all getting together with family and friends and throwing some meat on the barbecue. The question is, what cuts are best cooked on the barbie? There are some fantastic lean cuts available for purchase, which will satisfy any food critic. If you’re a lover of a good steak, you can’t go wrong with a porterhouse, rib fillet or rump steak. All of these would satisfy the most discerning guest. Bear in mind while cooking these cuts, only turn your steaks once during the cooking process, otherwise they will toughen up.

The idea of the barbecue is to keep it simple, without compromising on the nutritional value. Try these tips and you’ll become the Barbecue King or Queen in your neighbourhood! Be sure to start with a hot barbecue plate. Cooking times will vary, depending on the thickness of your steak, but let’s use 1.5cm thick as our guide. Rare: 1-1 1/2 minutes each side
 Medium: 2-3 minutes each side
Well done: 3-4 minutes each side Don’t forget to allow your steak to rest for a couple of minutes before serving, too. If steak is not your thing, chicken is also an easy cut of meat to turn into a gourmet delight on the barbecue. Grab some free-range chicken breast and ask your butcher to butterfly it for you. Or for a flavoursome twist, ask to have them marinated. A simple option is to simply turn them into kebabs. What about the kids? Sausages and burgers are a favourite for most. Ask your butcher about gourmet sausages and gluten-free options are available these days too. Lamb or beef burgers are another simple but delicious option.

AYURVEDA MATTERS BY MEL DONNELLY, NIRVANA LIFE

What is Ayurveda? Known as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is a medical system of healing which originated in India 5000 years ago. The aim of Ayurveda is to prevent sickness and to eliminate disease and dysfunction of the body. Ayurveda relates to the earth’s five elements: fire, water, earth, space and air. When we are born, these elements are represented within us at an individual ratio referred to as our DOSHAS makeup. When the body becomes out of balance, it begins to send us little messages such as bloating, acid reflux, constipation, lethargy, weight gain etc. If these issues are left untreated our body will continue to create more sicknesses, which eventually may lead to disease. Ayurveda allows the body to heal naturally through the earth and body’s rhythms. Let’s take the skin condition psoriasis as an example. The symptoms of this condition are inflamed and itchy skin. Ayurveda will look to treat the cause and not just treat the symptoms. The main difference between Ayurveda and other health professions is our main focus point – digestion. Many health systems will not assess this as a prime issue; instead they will prescribe you with organic foods and a very large bill of supplements. The major thing they are missing is, ‘We are not what we eat, we are what we digest.’ If our digestive system is not in its optimal state, even the highest grade of organic produce or supplements will not be absorbed. This can be very costly and disappointing with no results. By addressing your eating and lifestyle habits, you will find that many health issues will disappear on their own. This is because your body will no longer be living in an unbalanced state; therefore your body will reconnect with its healthy individual self. Try these tips: Wake up during sunrise and drink a detox drink: 1 part water, 2 squeeze lemon, 1 tsp grated ginger, 1 teaspoon honey. Scrape the film from your tongue and teeth. This film over your tongue is your body’s production of toxins.

TRIATHLON MATTERS BY DAVID CHICK, ALLEZ SPORT MOOLOOLABA

Summer is Triathlon These days triathlon can be virtually a 12 months of the year sport in Queensland, due to the amazing year-round weather conditions which have continued to extend our race calendar into winter, early spring and late autumn. However for the rest of the country triathlon is essentially considered a summer sport, and of course with swimming, early morning cycle training and an afternoon run, who wouldn’t want to be clocking up some miles, enjoying getting fit and testing themselves in a few events? To get the most out of this season, sit down and plan out your season of racing. Work out which are the races you really want to do well in, and which you will use as stepping stones or practice races to get fitter, stronger and used to pushing yourself.

Ultimately, though, I think we get the results we deserve out of this sport. There are no shortcuts and although everyone suffers from bad luck from time to time, your results will reflect your training.

No matter how hard you train and how methodical you are, don’t expect that most races will unfold exactly as planned. From my experience, rarely do things come together on race day exactly how you planned, or how you would like them to. Perhaps it’s the fact that there are three sports we are trying to master and perform at our ultimate on the one day. I don’t know how many times I am happy with two of the three and left lamenting, “If only I swam quicker earlier to hang on to a bunch” or “If only I didn’t get that puncture or get that stitch on the run.” I’m sure it’s these challenges that keep us striving for that perfect race and coming back for more.

YOUR SKIN MATTERS BY JESSICA LUISE BOLLINGTON, SKIN BY JESSICA LUISE

Radio Frequency: Leading the way in non-invasive skin treatments When it comes to non-surgical face lifts and skin firming there are various procedures available; however, radio frequency is a technology that is giving proven results in the areas of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging contours, acne scarring and also post-baby belly tightening. Bi polar radio frequency utilises a probe with two metal plates that run alongside each other. The radio frequency lopes from plate to plate and when in contact with the skin it goes down into the skin only, not sending radio frequency to any other part of the body. While the bi polar radio frequency probe is run over the skin, the frequency is heating and shrinking the fibrous tissue in the skin, giving you an instant lift. What is more important is the noninvasive trauma that is happening to your collagen. It is at that point that the brain is signalled that there is a trauma in the skin and the skin itself must go into a healing and rebuilding response, causing collagen production. Treatment is recommended every two to four weeks for a course of six treatments, give or take. After completion of a treatment course the best results are observed Aimee is an amazing therapist, she has great six months post-treatment, once collagen has fully matured. knowledge and passion for skin and everything beauty, Aimee has had eight years industry experience and eight years of giving clients amazing results. She is highly skilled in non invasive treatments including laser technology, fractional radio frequency and ultrasound technology. Aimee is our clinic manager, she is very kind, warm and caring. See the experience for yourself and book an appointment with Aimee today.

Depending on skin conditions and skin type, greater increase in the success of this treatment can be made by incorporating skin treatment peels, microdermabrasion and in some cases, laser technology.

Alternatively, fractional radio frequency can also be used for nonsurgical face lifts. It uses a grid-like probe with metal pins that deliver the frequency into the skin where the pins are (the pins are not sharp and do not enter the skin). Where the pins touch, fractions of the collagen are ablated, causing only trauma to that section and leaving the other sections of the collagen untouched. Again, the skin goes into a healing and rebuilding response.

Overall, the difference is that bipolar radio frequency causes trauma to the overall collagen and fractional radio frequency ablates collagen in small sections. The fractional radio frequency machine uses a lot more heat than the bi polar radio frequency machine, so it does create a little more trauma and a little more Jay is a fully qualified massage therapist with years offrequency experience specialising in remedial, of a healing response. CHIROPRACTIC MATTERS BY DR DAVID HENDREY, HENDREY CHIROPRACTIC

Poor posture = poor performance Poor posture is becoming more and more common, especially since the advancements in mobile technology. Every day you will see people looking down at their mobile devices, tweeting, texting and posting. This gives us an unparalleled connection to our friends and the enormous amount of information and entertainment on the web. Unfortunately this posture creates tension in our body and literally causes posture and spinal problems. Research shows that this poor posture held for just one hour stretches the spinal ligaments, resulting in a loss of stability.

Achieve your personal best with Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments have been shown to improve  Strength  Balance  Endurance  Co-ordination  Agility  Flexibility

Many people find they feel taller and lighter and have more freedom in their body after visiting the Chiropractor. If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, you owe it to yourself to book an assessment to regain your posture and performance.

You are then at a high risk of injury. The brain controls and coordinates the muscles, joints and ligaments to keep us in balance and performing at our best. After we lose our posture, the brain is not getting correct information from the body and our performance will ALWAYS suffer. Recently I had a great conversation with Olympic gold medallist, Kerri Pottharst about peak performance in sports. One of the things we talked about was getting “In the zone” and staying there. When your brain and body is not in sync, you can’t get there.

This is where Chiropractic steps in: Chiropractic focuses on the spine and nerve system, looking for areas of imbalance, tension and stress. Poor posture, tension, aches and pains, as well as stiffness can all indicate you may benefit from a tune-up. The Chiropractic adjustment gives the body a bit of a shock to help the nerve system to reset and return to harmony. The nerve pathways are stimulated and reactivated. Many people find they feel taller and lighter and have more freedom in their body after visiting the Chiropractor. If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, you owe it to yourself to book an assessment to regain your posture and performance.

Insights into Trail Running

With trial running on the rise and us humans feeling the urge to push our boundaries I thought I would give my perspective to trial running as there are some really distinct differences that even the more experienced road runners get caught out with. Here are five tips for staying safe on the trails.

3. Fuel up: Bring food with you, even on short runs, in case you’re in the forest longer than expected. Energy bars and gels are good because they’re easy to carry and digest. The carbohydrates will help you run and concentrate. Also, stay hydrated with small, frequent sips from a water bottle or hydration pack. 4. Watch the weather: Especially at higher elevations, temperatures can change and storms can roll in quickly, so plan accordingly. Even in the summer, bring a hat and a jacket (depending on the distance you plan on covering) which is water-resistant and weighs only 100grams. Use sunscreen, but be careful not to apply too much; it can clog pores and cause you to overheat. 5. Train your feet: Get used to running on easy paths, then move on to more gnarly trails. Take short, quick steps so you can react. Adding to this, your stride rate should be about 90 strides per minute. Road shoes work, but trail shoes have more traction and protect your feet from rocks and roots.

Happy Trailing!

Together they are organisers of a ‘free’ social running group, Glass House Mountains Running and MTB Group.

2. Think time, not distance: Tough terrain and hills can double the time you need to cover a mile. So consider how long you want to be out. Experienced trail runners cover about10kms an hour. Lessfit runners should target 7kms in an hour.

Ru

1. Keep in touch: When trying a new trail, go with someone who knows it–and bring a map, compass, mobile phone and whistle. If you do go solo, give someone a map of your intended route.

BODY MATTERS BY BELLE MCDONALD, HYPOXI HEALTH AND FITNESS

Fat Facts!

WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER WITH HYPOXI!

In a world which has become increasingly health conscious, there is still much confusion surrounding fat. Subcutaneous fat is a form of connective tissue lying below the skin’s surface, containing blood vessels, nerves, hair follicle and fat cells. It acts as a cushion, insulation and storage of energy. Cellulite is a specific from of subcutaneous fat. When fat cells expand, this creates upward pressure on the connective tissue. This pushes the fat cells against the top layers of the skin, hence creating the dimpled look. Visceral fat is located in the abdominal region and surrounds vital organs. Known as the most dangerous form of fat, excess visceral fat leads to insulin resistance and high cholesterol.

 Cellulite wont’ budge?  Cant shift that stubborn last 5 kilos?  Just not happy with your bum, tum hips or thighs?  You train hard, eat well with no results?

While there are many debatable ‘cures’ for all of the above, one thing experts agree across the board is that circulation and passive exercise play a massive role in the body’s ability to break down stubborn fat. Blood flow transports free fatty acids to be burned during exercise, so it stands to reason if you have poor circulation in a certain area of the body, it is more difficult to metabolise fat from that area. Take the test 1. Go for a brisk walk 2. Touch the areas of your body where you are storing fat 3. Compare it to other areas of the body – if the trouble areas are colder, this is a true indication of poor circulation. This is inhibiting your body’s abilities to metabolise fat. When you exercise, the body relies on three sources of energy – carbohydrates, triglycerides and free fatty acids. Exercising at lower intensity allows the body to metabolise free fatty acids more easily than at higher intensity, where carbohydrates are the main source of energy. Combining vacuum pressure to promote blood flow while passively exercising can result in up to 80 per cent of the fat being metabolised from the trouble areas, compared to regular exercise.

HOW CAN HYPOXI HELP ME? Hypoxi Health and Fitness can tailor a workout program in an advanced machine that uses vacuum and compression while you exercise to help target fat in those stubborn areas. Every hypoxi session boosts the effects of a regular workout, so that clients get slimmer and smoother in those problem areas faster than regular exercise. If you’re finding it difficult to lose weight, banish cellulite or need help with injuries, contact the team at Hypoxi Health & Fitness and book a consultation today.

why Why rest?

Why Coconut Water?

No matter what your reason for exercising, whether you’re training for a marathon, have an important event coming up or just have a genuine love of fitness, we all need a day to give our bodies a rest at least once a week. If you find the idea of taking a day off crazy talk, then we have news for you. Rest days are implemented into many professional training plans, even Olympic athletes. Without this break from your exercise routine, your body and mind have no time to recuperate. Here are just some of the benefits of a rest day: The repair process that happens during the rest period allows your muscles to grow stronger. When you work out too often and too intensely your body’s built-in protective mechanism kicks in, which can cause a weight loss plateau. Overtraining can cause excessive sleeping and insomnia. We’ve all heard that physical activity can release endorphins, but too much exercise can often have the opposite effect, resulting in anxiety and depression due to exhaustion. The more you train the more energy your body needs, so if you are trying to lose weight and are exercising harder than ever but are eating more than usual, you will not get the results you want. Life is about balance, so if you are overtraining and feeling tired and burntout, it is time to reassess your training program and make time for rest. Spending your rest day doing something you love that doesn’t involve physical activity will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the week ahead. By giving our bodies the love they deserve, we’re able to reap the full benefits of exercise and training.

It wasn’t so long ago that coconut water could only be obtained through a trip to the health food store. However, with its popularity and global demand increasing every day, this healthy and delicious drink can be found everywhere. So what makes it so good? This nutty flavoured drink is jam-packed with enzymes, natural sugars, electrolytes, and minerals that assist in hydrating the body and kick starting digestion.

Why bananas? Summer is the season for bananas and boy, are we are excited! In Australia we are lucky enough to grow some of the most delicious bananas in the world. This wonderfully sweet, yellow fruit that comes conveniently packaged also has a long list of health benefits. Why bananas are so great: Craving a coffee? Pick up a banana instead and you will instantly notice yourself feeling more awake and alert. Bananas have high levels of tryptophan which is converted to serotonin, a chemical that helps to overcome depression. If you experience cramps during exercise or when trying to sleep, eating a banana can help. Bananas regulate blood sugar and produce stress-relieving relaxation, so if you feel a mood swing coming on, you know what to do. Eating two bananas before exercising will raise your energy levels, so they make a fantastic pre-workout snack. Bananas are high in fibre, so eating one when you are feeling constipated can normalise bowel activity. Bananas have high levels of vitamin B-6 so they can reduce swelling, protect against type II diabetes, aid weight loss, strengthen the nervous system and help with the production of white blood cells.

Strenuous exercise can quite often lead to severe dehydration. Coconut water is a good remedy for this, as it has been found to have a similar electrolyte balance and plasma content to the human body. Therefore, when we consume the drink after exercise it brings our body back to where it needs to be. The high potassium levels in coconut water are great for regulating the circulation of blood through your body. Potassium is especially important for fitness people, as it plays a role in helping to store carbohydrates which are needed to fuel our muscles. Other benefits of drinking coconut water:  Helps with anti-ageing, clearing blood circulation and preventing cancer due to the cytokines. Improves digestion through eliminating toxins and body waste. Can help with migraines due to the magnesium content. Helps the kidney function through filtering toxins. Helps with blood pressure levels due to the magnesium and potassium content. Next time you’re searching for a water alternative, try some coconut water!

They are high in potassium and low in salt, and have been known to lower blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke. Bananas are inexpensive, readily available and have numerous health benefits, so there is no excuse not to add more of this delicious fruit to your diet.

There is nothing more indulgent than a pool... ESPECIALLY IF IT’S HEALTHY TOO! A magnesium pool helps to not only relax you, but also to give your body back what is often missing. Magnesium is extremely important to our bodies and if the body does not get sufficient amounts, a variety of serious conditions can result. One common symptom of magnesium deficiency is chocolate cravings, because chocolate is rich in magnesium. When magnesium is deficient, some of the symptoms include neck and back pain, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, muscle weakness and spasms, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, insomnia, abnormal heart rhythms, diarrhoea and muscle twitching. Only half an hour bathing in a MagnaPool™ regularly will start the healing benefits. A MagnaPool™ works naturally in three ways. Magnesium chloride, one of the main components, is known for its use as an antiseptic. The MagnaPool™’s special filtration process naturally removes organic impurities and phosphates before bacteria and algae can feed on them and grow. Lastly, MagnaPool™ Hydroxinator naturally produces a non-synthetic chlorine in a process very similar to one that takes place within our own bodies to fight bacteria and disease. These natural and efficient processes leave the pool clean and clear, with mineral water that is gentle on the eyes and beneficial to skin and the body. The magnesium chloride mineral can be absorbed through the skin (transdermally) at a cellular level as you bathe and swim. The process is called Mineral Science Therapy.

WHY FITNESS 51

E A DAY ON THE GREEN WITH TH ION AT SUNSHINE COAST SPORTS FEDER 25 YEARS OF GOLFING AND CHARITABLE HISTORY The first of September 1989 is a day that will be stamped in the minds of all those who attended the very first Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Golf Day. Known as The Hyatt in those days, everyone rallied to the event to take their very first glimpse of the Sunshine Coast’s new asset; an 18 hole championship format golf course. The day doubled as a fundraiser and the resort’s very first charity golf day. Everything was playing to par, with beautiful weather and smiling faces, until 4 pm. The meanest downpour, lightning, hail and rain came quickly over

Mt Coolum. Jumping off their buggies and scrambling back to the clubhouse, players were quick to get out of the carnage. The dinner presentations were moved inside, away from the beautiful pool setting, to cater for a bunch of players and their wives who just wanted to kick up their heels. Radio star Wayne Roberts provided the entertainment, singing the night away to a receptive audience. The event has shifted to other Coast clubs such as Twin Waters, Pelican Waters and Noosa Springs, but it has remained at Coolum ever since 2000. Most teams have been loyal over the years; Maroochy Surf club and Surf Club Mooloolaba being originals. Other than fundraising, the day has doubled as welcome home functions

for our Games athletes, Sportsmen’s Night, and generally anything to help promote Sunshine Coast Sport. Why Business Balance WITH KATE FILMER, RAY WHITE BUSINESS SALES We hear it all the time – “Balance is the key to success.” However, life can get pretty busy and overwhelming at times and when it does, all that balance goes flying out the window and you’re lumped with a pile of washing, emails, phone calls and kids’ homework. Yet that’s not even the worst of it. For what can also follow our balance out the window is healthy eating, exercise and any moment you had set aside for that all important ‘me time.’

I believe that to have success, we must put our health and our Zen moments at the forefront. For when we do, all of the tasks that fill up our waking hours will seamlessly fall into place, and we will have more mental and physical energy to deal with any unpredictable events. I find the best way to achieve business success is to ensure I’m at my best. Your body and mind are the vehicles that drive your success, and therefore you must look after your body with healthy foods, plenty of sleep, fresh air and exercise. Don’t let yourself fall into the pattern of eating sugar to up your down, as tomorrow you will be dealing with that same slump and looking for another sugary fix. Plus to stay self-motivated, look for the positives in all situations and take time out to meditate and appreciate. In good health, happiness and business success.

SC FALCONS: #OurTeamOurTown

THERE’S A STORM BREWING!

The Melbourne Storm has joined forces with the local Intrust Super Cup side, the Sunshine Coast Falcons after finalising a feeder team relationship that sees the Falcons become the second feeder club for the Melbourne Storm in the Queensland state rugby league competition. In an exciting development for Sunshine Coast rugby league, the deal which covers the 2015 – 2017 seasons will create the final link in the rugby league pathway for talented local juniors, who can now see a clear roadmap from Under 7’s to the NRL and beyond. Previous feeder club relationships with Brisbane club Norths Devils helped produce some of the Storm’s, Queensland’s and Australia’s current superstars in Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk, and with a passionate local league comprising of over 3300 junior and 1000 senior players who knows when the next superstar will be produced.

#OurTeamOurTown Come on Sunny Coasters, support the SC Falcons relationship with the Storm by attending any one of their 12 home games this season. Tickets available at the gate.

whychange

Why Change WITH CRAIG HARPER

APPRECIATE YOUR BODY, BUT DON’T OBSESS Trim, Taut and Miserable Have you noticed how many people are dissatisfied with their body? No matter how great they look? Or how well their body works? No matter how lean, strong or fit they are? Talk to a total hottie and, more often than not, he or she will tell you how out of shape they are. How ‘fat’ they feel. How terrible they look. And how they need to ‘drop a few pounds’. Talk to some random people with no major health issues and you’ll often find that they, too, are unhappy with their bodies. Many people will tell you that they actually hate their body. Really? Hate? Yep, hate! Good grief. Research. Of sorts. A little while back, I did some research. Admittedly, it wasn’t a particularly formal or super methodical process, but it was research nonetheless. Kind of. To keep my research kind-of-valid for this investigation, I only questioned people who were in reasonably good shape – by general standards. Anyway, I asked 25 blokes and 25 women one question: “Are you happy with how your body looks?” Being as it was my research and my rules, I told them that they could only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Before I asked the question, I instructed them to (1) be totally honest (2) not over-think the answer and (3) provide an answer within five seconds. The Results: Girls: Happy – 2, Unhappy – 23 Boys: Happy – 14, Unhappy – 11 Wowzer! Of the female respondents, 92 per cent said they did not like how their body looks. Considering that none of them were particularly overweight, that figure

Unlike most fitness professionals, the physical doesn’t interest me nearly as much as the psychological and the emotional. Sure, muscles are cool, but the person who lives beneath those muscles is what really fascinates me.

is staggering. For blokes, it was 44 per cent. And while I can’t say for certain, I’m pretty sure you would be astounded at some of the bodies that people are unhappy with. Or maybe you wouldn’t. Square Peg, Round Hole In the world of gym owners, exercise scientists and personal trainers, I sometimes feel like something of an oddity. Not better or worse, just different. Unlike most fitness professionals, the physical doesn’t interest me nearly as much as the psychological and the emotional. Sure, muscles are cool, but the person who lives beneath those muscles is what really fascinates me. The thinking. The beliefs. The values. The behaviours. The reactions. The choices. The fears. Especially the fear of not being pretty enough. Pretty enough for what? To be loved? Desired? Wanted? Needed? Popular? All of it? The Beauty Culture To be honest, the practice of striving for happiness via physical appearance is something that makes me a little sad. Like it or not, want it or not, you and I live in a society that is obsessed with physical beauty. A society obsessed with being lean. And having defined muscles. Flawless skin. A particular look and shape. Yet in the middle of our appearance obsession, we’re as miserable as ever. Ironically, more often than not, our misery has nothing to do with our body and everything to do with our thinking about our body. Our attitudes. Our beliefs. More often than not, the outside is fine but the inside is all-kinds-of messed up. Technically speaking. And Me? It’s at about this point in the discussion that I need to fess up with some relevant information; full disclosure. I’m not just speaking here as a researcher, observer or scientist. I’m also speaking as a bloke who, for a period of time, looked for approval and

acceptance through his body. For about five years in my late teens and early twenties I was an obsessive and (if I’m being totally honest) insecure body builder who was obsessed with achieving a certain look. In many ways, my life revolved around my appearance. Then one day I woke up in my great, big, lumpy, veiny, stupid-looking body and it dawned on me that my larger-thannecessary arms and pecs didn’t really equate to happiness. Who knew? All my mental and emotional issues were still there, with the only difference being that they now had a bigger body to live in. Of course, I was still insecure. Insecure and huge. A more common combination than you might expect. I’ve since come to understand that mental and emotional issues will never be resolved with a physical solution. I won’t bore you with my post-awakening details, but suffice it to say that since that time, I have been more interested in the person beyond the body. After all, my body is not who I am but rather, where I live. Okay, it took me a while to figure that out! In relation to this issue, these days I tend to ask people two questions up front: 1. Does your body work? 2. Is it healthy? If the answers are ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then I suggest that perhaps their body is not the problem.

Jessica Luise Skin by Jessica Luise

What is your Favourite Fresh Tip for 2015? We live in a culture of sun, surf and sand. We are so blessed! The tip I would like to share is to maintain better skin health over the summer period.

Keep it basic. For healthy skin, it must be topically applied with vitamins A, C and E, antioxidants and peptides. Especially because of our sunny Sunshine Coast lifestyle!

Vitamin A - Maintains healthy skin - Normalises abnormal cells - Heals faster - Improves collagen and elastin function and structure

Why do you like to start your New Year this way? I like to assess where my skin is at and change my skin care program if needed. I want to start the New Year looking and feeling the best I can; for me it builds confidence. Healthy skin function is so important!

Vitamin C - Mitigates the effect of UV in the skin - Helps to break pigmentation in the skin - Has super antioxidant ability - Encourages collagen production

What are the benefits to making this a habit in 2015? There are so many benefits to maintaining your skin health. Protection from the elements, reversing damage, encouraging healthy cell turn over and great-looking skin.

chydore 21 Ocean Street, Maroo Phone 5452 7121 e.com.au info@skinbyjessicaluis e.com.au www.skinbyjessicaluis

Vitamin E - An antioxidant that supports the other vitamins and retains cell hydration - Promotes the production of peptides, which are chains of amino acids that ask your cells to do specific jobs

Tara Lee

Suncoast Health and Wellness What is your favourite ‘fresh’ tip for 2015? Take small steps. The smallest of changes can have big results. So set small, realistic goals. Why do like to start your New Year this way? So I don’t overwhelm myself!

Phone 5450 5673 2/28 Karome Street

What are the benefits to making this a habit in 2015? Small steps are more achievable for most people. Thus enabling the achievement of long lasting change with less stress and anxiety.
