EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster
editor’s note
How did that happen? When did that happen? It truly blows my mind to be writing my eighth Editor’s Note! It seems like only yesterday that Vickie and I said, “Let’s do this” and created Why Fitness Magazine. The Sunny Coast has embraced it with open arms and we are truly humbled by the emails, messages and comments that we receive almost daily, thanking us for creating this much needed initiative for our Community. Every day I pinch myself and ask, “How did I wake up at the beginning of 2013 the editor of a fitness magazine!?!” Dreams, it seems, do come true. What I know for sure is that it would not happen without many amazing people. I would personally like to say thank you to Amanda Opanubi, our gifted designer for the incredible presentation of the magazine. Issue after issue it shines brightly and for this I am so grateful. A huge thanks to Mr Magic who hand delivers the magazine, helps us at our events and is just always there. My two beautiful and patient kids, Alex and Izzie. These two brilliant young people have supported absolutely everything that I have done. They are smart, funny, responsible, polite, intelligent and do me proud every day. To every single advertiser, my gratitude for your support and belief in Why Fitness Magazine is endless; you give the magazine life – thank you! There are other special people who have been there along the way giving me hugs when needed, you know who you are. Finally, to Vickie Magic, my business partner, confidante and friend. You should have wings … No words can express my love and gratitude to you; you have changed my heart, mind and soul.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela 1918-2013
OK, this issue is all about holiday fitness. Hello! We are not on holidays everyone, we live here! So instead of the traditional 12 days of Christmas, I am going to share with you my 12 DOs of Fitness (at Christmas). In no particular order, here are 12 things that will help you to have a happy, healthy, fun-filled, family Christmas. 1. Don’t forget the H2O – drink plenty of water. 2. Just say ‘NO’ – it is not an offence to decline drinks, food, party invitations or Nana’s treats. 3. Climb a mountain – there is a plethora to choose from on the Sunshine Coast. 4. Read a book – you’ll be amazed how relaxing this can be. 5. Write a goal list for 2014 – ten things you would like to achieve. 6. Ban New Year Resolutions – this year and every year. 7. Do a workout – 20 Burpees, 20 Pushups, 20 Star jumps, 10m Run. Repeat as desired. 8. Have an alcohol free day (or two). 9. Eat fruit and vegetables every day. 10. Volunteer for a charity – even for just one hour. 11. See the sunrise – this is especially awesome if done on 31 December. 12. Do something just for fun – even better if you have never done it before. There you have it!
Why Fitness Magazine supports local charity Surf Life Saving.
On behalf of the entire Why Fitness Magazine team, we wish you all a joyous Christmas and prosperous and abundant New Year with family and friends and look forward to sharing ‘Why Fitness Matters’ with you in 2014.

Top ten ways to
stick to your health goals and still enjoy the holidays by Henry Hound Ahhh… The holidays, time to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the season. Time to look back on the year gone by and to look forward towards the one ahead. Time to think about spending good cheer with family and friends … and time to start to freak-out about how you will stick to your health and fitness goals! But don’t panic, just because the stockings are all hung with care, doesn’t mean that extra kilos soon will be here! You can keep your weight loss and fitness goals on target during the holidays, it just takes some drive, determination, a lot of planning and some help from these top ten tips! 1. SHIFT YOUR FOCUS Yes, there will be the inevitable parties; house parties, office parties, dinner parties, you name it. But remember, parties are at their heart, social events. Focus on the people and not the food. Spend less time at the bar or the buffet and more time talking and laughing with your friends and family. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are all about? Want to know the best way to really make sure the menu for a holiday party is healthy for you? Consider throwing it yourself!
6 ISSUE 8
2. MINDFUL EATING If you are a regular reader of this column, you have heard me talk a lot about mindful eating. It is even more important during the holidays. At a party or a huge holiday dinner, eat slowly and mindfully. Savour and enjoy each morsel. Slow down and no gulping. You will enjoy the whole experience that much more and weigh that much less! 3. DRINK RESPONSIBLY I do not only mean cocktails, although those are also very tempting during the holidays. Try to avoid alcohol, not only for the health issues, it can lower your resolve to stick to your goals. If you must drink, stick with a glass of red or white wine. Be careful with the soft drinks too and opt for sparkling or mineral water instead. 4. STAY ACTIVE The holidays offer lots of opportunities to keep moving! Park as far from the entrance as possible when you are doing your shopping. Get the guests up and dancing at those ubiquitous parties or play some physically active games.
5. LEAVE THE LEFTOVERS BEHIND Do not feel obligated to take home a ‘doggie bag’ from a holiday dinner party. If you are going to splurge, once is usually more than enough for rich holiday meals and/or desserts. 6. REWARD YOURSELF Sure, holiday time is the time for giving and you can and should give yourself rewards for coming this far with your fitness goals. Just shift the rewards from food to something else fun that you may have given up, or not had the time for during the rest of the year. Go see a show, even go bungy jumping or swimming with sharks, whatever it is, go out and enjoy a special non-food reward, you deserve it! 7. STAY THE COURSE The holidays are a special time, no one is denying that. But, from a health and fitness standpoint, your best bet is not to treat them any differently than any other time of the year. Consistency is your best friend when it comes to reaching and maintaining weight loss goals. Your best option is to stick to your usual weekly diet and exercise regimen as closely as possible, rather than using the holidays as an excuse to change.
feature
8. PLAN YOUR TREATS AND CHEATS It would be impossible not to indulge just a little during the holidays and you probably would do more to throw your fitness plans off kilter by trying to deny yourself altogether. But plan what you really want. If you set priorities in terms of the foods you really want to eat, you are less likely to grab whatever is there. And again, whatever you do choose, savour it mindfully. 9. PRACTICE HEALTHY STRESS MANAGEMENT Let’s face it, the holidays aren’t all fun and good cheer, they can also be very stressful. Don’t let all that holiday stress lead to stress overeating. Practice healthy stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing.
10. MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTHY MIND SET I like to call this ‘Mind Over Fatter’. Remember, during the holidays, just like the rest of the year, you need to change your mind set if you want to get fit and stay fit. If you do not think about being ‘on a diet’ during the holidays, but instead remember that you have made a conscious lifestyle choice, then a holiday is just “another day” in your lifetime commitment to looking and feeling your best! You can enjoy the holidays without compromising your fitness goals and if you do, you will find you have given yourself the greatest gift of all. From The Health Hound to you and yours, I wish you a happy, safe and healthy holiday season.
THE HOLIDAYS ARE A SPECIAL TIME, NO ONE IS DENYING THAT.

With summer well and truly here, there is no better place to enjoy the beautiful Sunshine Coast weather than at one of the local beaches. They are not only a great place to relax but a wonderful environment in which to exercise and get fit.
But the ocean can be an unpredictable and dangerous environment if you are not used to it. That’s why the coast’s wonderful lifeguards are employed to protect beachgoers and ensure their safety by using red and yellow flags. The red and yellow flags not only outline the safest place to swim but are also constantly monitored by lifeguards, ensuring swimmers are well clear of dangerous rip currents and free of surfers on craft. While 90 percent of Australians understand that the red and yellow flags on our beaches indicate the safest area to swim, it has been reported that roughly 60 percent of tourists have no idea why they are there. In 2012 alone, lifeguards saved roughly 15,000 people in trouble at our beaches. Three quarters of this number were swimming outside the flags! So, to stay safe and enjoy this summer, make sure you swim inside the red and yellow flags. For more beach safety information see www.beachsafe.org.au
8-Stage Tap Water Purification & Mineralisation
It is the new ocean sport that has taken beaches by storm. Stand up paddle boarding, or SUP as it is known, has become increasingly popular over the last decade because it is far more than just going for a float. SUP involves a large surfboard on which you can stand up and a canoe style paddle you use to propel yourself forward and on to waves. Originally from Hawaii, SUP began with Malibu surfers using canoe paddles to make it easier getting back out to catch waves while surfing. It has since evolved into a global phenomenon and even a professional sport.
There are equipment and styles of stand up paddling for all levels of participants – boards made for surfing, endurance paddling and racing competitively and (Why Fitness’s personal favourite) boards made for simply cruising on a calm ocean. The fitness benefits of SUP are also great. You use your core to keep balance and your arms to paddle yourself forward, as well as all the cardio exercise you get while having a great time exploring the ocean. SUP is perfect for all ages and is very easy to learn, with most people competent at their first attempt. So, whether you’re a salty sea dog or just finding your sea legs, stand up paddle boarding might be the sport for you.

Paul de Gelder
In 2009, during a routine mission as a Navy Clearance Diver with the Royal Australin Navy, Paul de Gelder was attacked by a bull shark, resulting in the loss of his right arm and leg. Lucky to survive, Paul left nothing to chance in his recovery. He fought through exruciating pain, smashing challenge after challenge and amazing the medical staff with his will to succeed. His inspiring story takes 'never say die' to whole new level. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Paul to ask him our famous 'Five Questions in Five Minutes'. We even asked a bonus sixth question!
FIVE in 5
Hi Paul. Tell us what you are famous for? I am definitely famous for being eaten alive by a shark. The first question I’m asked by people who don’t know me personally is, “Are you that navy diver who got eaten by the shark?” So, that’s me!
So before you were attacked, what was life like for you? Life was fantastic and amazing for me — travelling the world diving and blowing stuff up. I lived at Bondi Beach and drove a big black Italian sports bike. So I was living the dream.
Tell us how your life has changed since you were attacked? Yeah, it has been flipped upside down and inside out. It was very hard for a long time but I desired and dreamed of having an amazing life again, so I created one and it is now exactly that.
Who do you want to be when you grow up? Initiially and instantly I think Batman. But then, more realistically, I think Bear Grylls is an icon to me and has been even more so since I got to hang out with him recently. So I would love to be like him, on TV and inspiring people around the world. [Why Fitness] It’s funny, I’m continually getting a superhero theme among the people I interview. I interviewed Steve Willis, The Commando, just the other day and he wanted to be Superman. [Paul] (Laughs) We are actually good friends so that is interesting. [Why Fitness] Have you agreed to who is going to be Batman and who is Superman? [Paul] No, but I’m sure he would win in that fight too!
When you are not out inspiring people and sharing your stories, what do you do for fun? I love adventure and I love travelling. So when I’m not having an adventure or travelling to speak, I’m simply travelling to meet amazing people and experiencing amazing things.
What’s your most memorable adventure? Most recently, it was going snowboarding for the first time with an experimental prosthetic leg from Germany and killing it — until I dislocated my elbow (laughs). But it was amazing. I can’t wait to go back to Queenstown and do it again.
What’s your Why? Why do you do the things you do? I don’t want to have any regrets. When I was underwater being shaken apart by the shark and thinking I was going to die, I didn’t have any regrets and now that I get this second chance at life, it is all bonus time. I don’t want to get to the end again and have any regrets, so I’m going to make my life the most amazing thing I possibly can.
Jen Forster, Paul de Gelder and Vickie Magic
We have just one bonus question. If you had three little pieces of advice for anyone who is reading this and is struggling, what would you say to them? Simply the things that kept me going: improvise, adapt and overcome. That mantra really sums it all up for me. Improvise ways out of the holes in your life, whether it is depression or a rut or whatever it is. Adapt, become strong and become more confident. Practise your motivation and your positivity. And overcome the obstacles that are there. That’s why they are there… There you go guys: six questions in five with the amazing and inspiring Paul de Gelder. His book No Time for Fear is available now. WARNING: If you are sensitive to anything gory, don’t flip straight to the pictures in the middle of Paul’s book! www.pauldegelder.com

Kale, Basil & Macadamia Pesto Roulades Delicious canapés, perfect for the festive season with the goodness of kale. 1 cup fresh basil leaves 1 cup fresh kale leaves ½ cup macadamia nuts ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan ½ cup olive oil 4 free range eggs 200 g feta cheese (as needed) Pink Himalayan salt Toothpicks METHOD In a blender or processor blitz the macadamias, kale, basil, parmesan, a pinch of himalyan salt and olive together to make a smooth paste. Whisk the eggs together in a bowl. Heat a frying pan with some olive oil, swirl the olive oil so the pan is well covered. Pour the egg mixture into the frying pan so it makes a large and thin omelette. Depending on the size of your frying pan you may need to make 2. Flip to make sure it is cooked and nice and golden on both sides. Carefully remove from heat and drain on paper towel. Cut the omelette into long rectangular strips about 2 cm wide. Spread each strip with the pesto and crumble feta over the top.
WHY with Rebecca Mugridge
Roll up into swirl shapes and cut off at desired thickness, you should get 3 - 5 swirls per strip depending on your omelette size. You can also cut the now rolled segments in half width-wise again to make them nice and thin. Skewer with a toothpick. Serve.

Healthy.
KALE Kale is a sensational power vegetable and the combination with fresh basil and a great parmesan and feta is beautiful. This is a beautiful, healthy, gluten free canapé perfect for entertaining. Make a nice batch of the pesto as it can also be thrown through really lovely pasta. Kale (Brassica Oleracea) is a green leafy vegetable considered to be one of the highest in nutrients with many health benefits including, it is said, anti-cancer effects so it is well worth tracking down or growing your own.

advancedfitnessperformance talk, hormonal imbalances for women or possibly even bouts of fainting for some. You may even feel digestive symptoms such as bloating, wind, headaches, insomnia or nausea. Conditions that particularly affect athletes are energy levels, fluid retention, muscle cramping, weight issues, mood issues, joint and muscle pain or inflammation and injuries.
ADVANCED FITNESS PERFORMANCE with Jodi Chapman
DO YOUR TRAINING EFFORTS VARY FROM FANTASTIC TO BELOW AVERAGE REGULARLY? IT COULD BE ABOUT WHAT YOU EAT! If you open any sports magazine or book written for athletes, you’ll find dietary advice on how much protein, fat and carbohydrate you should be getting to ensure your best results and optimum energy. What you won’t find, however, is what it is about YOU as an individual that makes your motor fire at its best every time you train and compete. Have you noticed any subtle symptoms, such as intolerance to cold, mild or moderate fatigue which may slow your pace even just a little or dramatically, weak or heavy muscles, or a feeling that it’s just that little bit tougher to train? Your mood isn’t so great, maybe your motivation needs a pep
Most people are not aware that underlying food allergies can be affecting them, even in the most subtle way. They can compromise your ability to complete daily tasks efficiently, reducing energy levels and causing symptoms that may be considered normal if you’ve felt them for most of your life. These symptoms will fluctuate from day to day depending on what food you consume, how strong your allergic response is to that food and how much of it you consume. In clinical practice I have allergy tested more than 95 percent of my patients for the past eight years. This has shown that it is very common to have between ten and 60 foods allergens that have become sensitivities for these people, causing sometimes subtle symptoms, and sometimes extreme symptoms of ill health. Food allergies can come about at any stage of your life when your gut wall has become inflamed. This may have been as a child when you’ve had a virus or infection causing diarrhoea or vomiting or it may have been during a stressful time throughout your life. The gut wall can become inflamed during these times, allowing gaps between the cells of the wall, which then allows food particles that you are regularly eating to leak through and cross your gut
Jodi Chapman will be answering your sports/ athletic/nutrition performance questions over coming issues. If you would like to ask Jodi a question, please email info@advancedwellness.com.au and put ‘Ask Jodi at Why Fitness’, in the subject line.
wall barrier. This causes your immune system to recognise the food particle as a foreign object, which in turn produces an immune reaction against that food immediately, usually long term. If you are unaware of what food to avoid, the allergic response may gradually become more severe with repeated consumption. Short term effects can include fluid retention, which will affect your mood, weight, energy, muscle cramping, and inflammation. However, if not treated, long term effects that I see most commonly are a compromised immune system, autoimmune disease, kidney problems, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer’s or dementia. These are all the degenerative versions of the allergic response, which causes a release of cortisol hormone into your system and if allowed to continue long term, causes a breakdown of joints and chronic inflammation to any or every organ. In-clinic testing is available to show fluid and inflammation levels, confirming food allergy. This is then followed up with a blood test if necessary. Food allergy testing can be done in a number of ways, some more accurate than others. It is crucial that you get accurate testing the first time.
Whether you’re a professional athlete, social athlete, or training as a hobby, you will never know how good your body can feel, how much energy you can produce, and how boosted your immune system can be if you don’t know if the food you consume is right for you. If you would like further information, please contact Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre for a free half hour consultation to discuss your particular health concerns. FITNESS MAGIC with Vickie Magic
Things have been a little difficult for me of late. I was exercising with friends one beautiful Friday morning a few weeks back. I was taking the session and getting them moving. We were running up and down stairs at Point Cartwright and doing some exercises
on the equipment. Next we had step ups on the sandstone wall, an exercise I had done a hundred times before, but usually I walked two steps up, then two down, but this day I was feeling fabulous and my step up was more of a run up and a run down. I was doing brilliantly, then all of a sudden, blah down I came in a crashing heap. I heard a very loud noise inside my ankle and the pain was unbearable. I wouldn’t let anyone help me and I wouldn’t let anyone touch me. I was a little bit of a cranky pants, to be honest. I am a terrible patient and a terrible sick person. In the weeks since, I’ve been a bit of a misery guts. I was so used to being out every morning exercising. It is amazing what an injury can do, not just to your body where the injury is, but also to your mind. I know I didn’t hurt my head, but for a moment everything fell in a heap: no exercise, so I might as well have that extra this and that extra that and that extra other thing. The difference this time for me is I
recognise it and so I can stop it before it takes over. Yes I have put on a little bit of weight, but this time a set back doesn’t mean the end and the reason is… wait for it… because I say so. This stuff is absolute. Whatever we say is, so if I say, “This is it”, “I can’t”, “It’s over”, “I might as well eat a fly”, then that is my truth. But if I say, “No enough is enough”, “I am back on track”, “I can do this”, then that is also true, so that is what I say. I have lost 25 kilos so I am not going back, there is no going back. Period. I wish you all a fabulous festive season and look forward to sharing more with you next year.

More often than not, the three things that go out the window at this time of year are our diets, fitness regimes and budgets. All of which create further stress and anxiety after New Year is over, and we wonder how to get back to some sense of normality, lose those added pounds we gained and fix our finances in time to take an Easter holiday.

FOOD FITNESS GUIDE Your body needs regular nourishment to fuel your mind, body and soul. Here is a good way to keep track of what your body needs each day to stay healthy. Eat 6 small meals a day, (3 meals and 2 – 3 snacks) every 2 – 3 hours to keep blood sugar stable, emotions regulated and energy high. Vegetables are unlimited at all
times of the day and should be included in at least two of your meals, while fruit should be only 1 – 2 serves per day. Protein is measured in portions the size of your palm or fist. Drinking 2 litres of water a day will keep you hydrated and also fight off those pseudo-hunger symptoms.
BREA KFAST Antioxidant-rich berries with low fat yoghurt with LSA*, rolled oats with low fat milk with LSA*, or 2 small eggs on a slice of rye are always a good choice to start the day.
SNA CKS Protein shakes, super juices, a serving of fruit.
LUNCH A ND DINNER Each of these meals is made up of a serving of protein, a serving of carbohydrates and vegetables. *LSA is a combination of linseed, soy and almond mix.
Smile — not only does it burn calories, it also releases neurochemicals that make you feel happy and calm.
Set yourself mini goals—goals within goals.

9 hills for charity
If you’re looking for a great way to justify that extra serve of Christmas pudding while supporting a great cause, the Buderim 9 Challenge will once again push cyclists of all skill levels when they take on the hills of Buderim on Sunday, 22 December. The ride, which will raise muchneeded funds for the Cerebral Palsy League, has built a reputation as an iconic fitness event as riders tackle the 75-kilometre track over Buderim’s toughest hills within the three-hour timeframe. Event organiser Greg Paix, from the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club, said the event raised over $15,000 last year and attracted competitors from far and wide.
from as far as Melbourne and Sydney to participate.” John Gallagher, director at Argon Law and principal partner of the Buderim 9 Challenge, said it was great to support such a worthwhile cause while encouraging people to get fit in the lead-up to Christmas, even if it means only taking on part of the route.
“We are once again thrilled with the number of registrations coming in and we hope to achieve record numbers when registrations close on 16 December,” Greg said.
“While we have a great field of riders tackling all nine hills, many, including myself, are opting to ride just one or two legs to participate in what has fast become a local Christmas tradition,” said Mr Gallagher.
“This event has become increasingly popular over the past four years and we now have people travelling
“There is such a great cycling community on the Sunshine Coast and we are expecting that over 300
riders will participate this year, helping to reach a target of $30,000 for local Sunshine Coasters with cerebral palsy and related physical disabilities.” The ride will start at 5am and finish with a ceremony and sausage sizzle at 8am at the Buderim Lions Park. In addition to Argon Law, the event has attracted key sponsors and supporters in the Sunshine Coast Council, Hall Contracting, Accumul8, Ord Minnett, Pacific Radiology, Next Property Group, Mick’s Meats, Buderim Lions Club, Fenwick’s Fruit Barn and Ignite Digital Marketing. Holiday Is it worth it?
An important point to consider before we indulge in something that may reduce fitness and compromise health is, “Is it worth it?” Consider the temporary enjoyment compared to the long-term consequences. In some cases it may be worth it. After all it’s what we do 99 per cent of the time that counts. However this reasoning should not be applied 99 per cent of the time. If we are making an exception to our health regime then it should be just that — an exception. We can cultivate self-control by keeping a strong focus on our ultimate goal, whether it is weight loss, fighting a serious health issue or simply trying to achieve fitness and optimal health.
by April Patane, Naturopathic Assistant, Living Valley Springs Health Retreat HOLIDAYS TRADITIONALLY SHOULD BE A TIME FOR RELAXING, REDEFINING PRIORITIES, CATCHING UP ON SLEEP AND MAKING TIME FOR THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE, LIKE OUR HEALTH. HOWEVER, CHRISTMAS IS CALLED THE SILLY SEASON FOR A REASON. IT IS A CULMINATION OF AN ALREADY BUSY YEAR INTO A CLIMAX OF FRANTIC SHOPPING, LATE NIGHT SOCIALISING, YEAR-END PARTIES AND GENERAL OVER-INDULGENCE. IN A SEASON DESIGNED FOR ‘TAKING TIME OUT’ MOST OF US FIND OURSELVES INSTEAD STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT. FITNESS, NUTRITION AND ULTIMATELY OUR HEALTH SUFFER THE BIGGEST SETBACK OF THE WHOLE YEAR.
20 ISSUE 8
At Living Valley Springs, commitment from clients during the holiday period generally drops off. People can be thriving on a recommended lifestyle program and taking the principle of balance seriously, until they are faced with the overwhelming temptation of a Christmas pudding or the abundance of cakes, treats and alcoholic beverages that seem so much less harmful during this fun-filled season. There is, of course, a downside. At New Year’s resolution time, all of a sudden the binge is over and reality kicks in. It is no wonder that most of us start the New Year disillusioned, exhausted and feeling like we need another holiday.
Choose a delicious but healthier option.
Just because something is healthy does not mean it cannot be delicious. Foods such as fresh dips, brie, camembert, Christmas roasts, turkey, fresh nuts, exotic salads, and moderate amounts of fruit plus all the trimmings can provide excellent nutrition without the roller-coaster effect produced by sugar consumption. Avoid cakes, lollies, biscuits, soft drinks and sugar based treats. Make the festive season special by creating delicious, wholesome, home-style meals. Spending more time entertaining friends and family in our own homes allows us to control portion size and menu content.

Fitness Exercise is still important. During the busy times, exercise
becomes even more essential than ever. It helps us cope with stress. Unfortunately, gym regimes and morning walks can be the first to go during a busy holiday season. We also need to keep up our regular visits to the chiropractor, the massage therapist, etc., if that is what we normally do. Remember, our best chance of surviving this season with our health intact is by keeping to our normal exercise and fitness regime. Holidays should provide us with time to take fitness more seriously rather than less. Let’s not wait until the New Year to join a gym. Use the break from work or study to set goals and get started.
Get sleep!
Sleep is the ultimate form of relaxation. The sleep hormone, melatonin, is one of the most powerful antioxidants produced by the body. It is responsible for repair and maintenance. Melatonin is produced during sleep, in darkness, peaking during the hours before midnight. Those who get inadequate pre-midnight sleep age quicker and are more susceptible to serious disease. An occasional late night is not a big problem. However, consistent postmidnight bedtime, due to partying or other reasons, will take its toll.
Remember to drink water!
Our daily water intake can so often be based on convenience. Whether we are sitting at a desk all day or working out in the hot sun, a water break is a welcome excuse for a pause in one’s regular activity. However when you are rushing around out and about, it is so easy to forget to drink water regularly throughout the day. Adequate hydration is even more necessary during times of extra alcohol and caffeine consumption. These diuretics increase the output of water through the kidneys, leaving the body’s tissues, organs and skin dehydrated. Drink plenty of water on rising and then be sure to drink more at regular intervals throughout the day.
Treat your body this holiday season.
JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS HEALTHY DOES NOT MEAN IT CANNOT BE DELICIOUS. FOODS SUCH AS FRESH DIPS, BRIE, CAMEMBERT, CHRISTMAS ROASTS, TURKEY, FRESH NUTS, EXOTIC SALADS, AND MODERATE AMOUNTS OF FRUIT PLUS ALL THE TRIMMINGS CAN PROVIDE EXCELLENT NUTRITION WITHOUT THE ROLLERCOASTER EFFECT PRODUCED BY SUGAR CONSUMPTION.
embraces overindulgence, it does not have to. Stick to your goals and end the year fitter and healthier than when the year started. Take a deep breath and focus in on what is most important. Be aware of the pitfalls associated with the holiday season and start a tradition this Christmas to make your health and fitness your priority. April has been working at Living Valley Springs for eleven years. She has worked as Personal Assistant to the General Manager, Gary Martin ND. She also established and managed the Human Resources department for a staff team of 60 personnel. She is now in her final years of study to complete her diploma in Naturopathy and a degree in Health Sciences. www.lvs.com.au
Take time out for a tune up and a recharge. Your body has worked hard all year and it deserves a break. Instead of planning a series of late nights out, book in for a relaxing weekend away or even consider doing a retreat detox program. Other rejuvenating and low cost body treats include steam baths, reflexology, massage or even a simple walk along the beach. Remember that holidays are ultimately about enjoying yourself. WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray
I am delighted to see an increase in the number of events held here on the Sunshine Coast that help support a wide range of wonderful charities. A great example of a fantastic event supporting a fantastic charity is last month’s Triathlon Pink at Stockland Park, Bokarina. Since the first event in Sydney 2006, Pinkies have proudly helped raise over $1 million for the fight against breast cancer. As well as having fun and being healthy and active, participants also helped raise funds for this terrific cause — how good is that? Then there are the big hitters: our first Sunshine Coast Color Run in September saw more than 12,000 participants help raise $35,000 for the local SunnyKids charity; Sunshine Coast Marathon this year proudly helped raise funds for seriously ill children and their families, who use the facilities Ronald McDonald House Charities provide; meanwhile 20,000 participants in the Coast’s inaugural Tough Mudder® in Caloundra in August supported Legacy Australia. But it’s not just the major events doing their part for charities. There are a number of smaller ones, such as the annual Sunshine Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes. As well as raising some much-needed funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Australia to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes, this free event is focused on raising awareness and sharing the hope for a better life for people with this disease. This year’s event at Cotton Tree Park in August saw around 500 people attend and raised more than $15,000. This is just a handful of examples. I absolutely love how more and more events and charities are working hand in hand and I only hope this positive development is one that continues to grow and flourish. But remember, they need your help as well to make it a success!

WHY AWAKEN WITHIN with Kim Morrison, Carren Smith and Cyndi O’Meara
Carren: Get fit, feel the sun and enjoy a run! That’s my motto when it comes to fitness! I have to confess, I’ve been trapped behind my computer for months now and as the Christmas break approaches, I’m planning on taking full advantage of the magic! I love the sound of the birds, the breeze, the beach and best of all, the bikinis. So, why not get out there, have the best time as a reward for the hard work you’ve done this year and make your fitness fun this year? Give up the hard slog and pounding pavements till you vomit — that is no reward! Make it fun, fabulous and full of festive cheer. That’s my advice and I’m going for it! How about you? Cyndi: Just because it is holidays doesn’t mean you stop the moving, eating and thinking wellness. Gone are the days of lying in the sun eating to excess on a holiday island — many holidays are now geared around food and exercise. A hike in the Himalayas, skiing in the snowy mountains, paddling through the waterways of Greenland, meditating in India, and boot camps and health camps are all on offer. When you plan your next holiday, think of ways to improve your fitness, food and fun. This, for me, is the best holiday for my mind and body. Kim: Holidays mean more time to focus on you and the perfect time to ask where you want to be in 12 months. We are here to remind you that now is the perfect time to set your health and fitness goals and commit to a plan for 2014. No more excuses, no reasons not to educate yourself! Use your time off wisely and commit to doing something every day. You have one body, one life. There are so many fantastic exercise protocols out there and we have an abundance of amazing real foods. Consider this your kick up the butt and start to really take care of these amazing privileges. If nothing else, consider this: you HAVE to do some form of exercise every day to earn your lie on the beach, healthy dessert or special cocktail! Happy holidays!

Swimming Matters with Rob Dunne | Train Race Inspire
FIVE STEPS TO GET SWIMMING REGULARLY Did you know the average Australian will gain 1.5kg over the Christmas break and will decrease their exercise by 28 per cent. And it can take an average of three months to get back into previous shape. So this festive season, why not increase your fitness by creating fitness as fun? Turn your beach and pool activities into an outing for the whole family. Try stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing or body surfing. All of these water based activities are great and all work out up to 93 percent of your muscles. Try these five steps to get swimming regularly… Make it a habit Try set aside time every week to go to the pool. Write it in a diary so it becomes a permanent fixture in your weekly schedule. Consider getting an annual swim pass. This will save money and encourage you to go more often. Take the kids Swimming is a great way for families to get moving and have fun together. There are so many things you can do to keep the kids interested, such as humming songs underwater, diving for fun toys, etc. Swim with a friend It really helps to go swimming regularly with someone of about the same ability as you. You’ll encourage each other when you’re not so keen to go to the pool. Mix it up The swimming pool makes a great playground and a great gym, even for non-swimmers, with activities such as aquacise. However, learning to swim will introduce you to a whole new world of water-based activities in the pool and beyond. Join a club If you enjoy swimming and want to get more involved, consider joining a club. Clubs are a great way to make new friends, improve your swimming and motivate you to exercise regularly. Most clubs have a lively social scene away from the pool, with trips and nights out. Have a great festive season and hope to see you in the water.

HOLIDAY TIME! You have to love this time of year. Sunny days, barbeques, drinks with friends, relaxing… and heaps of time to TRAIN! There is no excuse for not being able to exercise and help burn off some of that festive cheer. Here are a few ideas that will help you keep in shape while still enjoying your holiday break: A morning walk. The sun is up before 5am, the birds are a-chirpin’ and the heat of the day has not yet arrived. It’s a perfect time to exercise and a great way to kick-start your day. Find a park. Parks are a great place to exercise. A big grassy area for a run or some sprints, a bench for the stepups and dips, and you can do squats, push-ups and crunches anywhere. A ready-made circuit session! Beach. Is there a better place to be this time of year? Running on sand will hit more leg muscles than a road run, burning more calories along the way, and the view is fantastic! Gyms. If you are still keen to get into the gym on holidays, you can pay a casual visit fee or, if you have a few weeks’ holiday, why not take out a short-term membership? An economical choice with minimal commitment. Outdoor group fitness. These sessions are everywhere! Trial a few to find one that suits your needs and goals. Personal trainers will be able to offer you all the information you need — times, days, prices and the level of fitness needed. This is also an awesome way to do some different types of training and a great way to meet new friends while on your holidays! Enjoy your break and keep exercising — this way there is no need to feel guilty about your festive indulgences!

HOLIDAY FITNESS AND STAYING ON TRACK At this time of year, people have either had a big year of racing and have completed all their desired races until next year or alternatively, they are building some base miles in preparation for a number of races targeted for next year and are hell bent on getting some mileage in. That is, they are either winding down or winding up. Christmas and the holiday season can offer some great variations for training. If you find yourself on vacation somewhere, it is a great opportunity to check out some different trails or roads to ride or run. This can be just the recipe for freshening up your training before you go back to your familiar training squad or environment. In much the same way, the holiday period often allows for a change of training times as well. For instance, if you normally swim in the morning, having a few weeks off work can allow you to swim in the afternoon. Altering when you do certain sessions can also change things up again. Holidays are also a great time to get some big weeks of mileage in. Not having to work means that an increased heavy training load can be handled easier, with the time for a power nap between sessions. You will also recover better with the opportunity to get the right nutrition back in.

If you find yourself on vacation somewhere, it is a great opportunity to check out some different trails or roads to ride or run. This can be just the recipe for freshening up your training before you go back to your familiar training squad or environment. Christmas is a special time of year that can be very important to family and friends, so try not to be too regimented with the training and diet for at least a few days over this period. A sport like triathlon is very demanding on the body and mind and holidays are the perfect opportunity to recharge the batteries. If you are worried about overindulging, pick a couple of days or functions you want to enjoy and then get back into your training program once these have passed.

GOLF CLUB EQUIPMENT — DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO BUY? Buying golf equipment can be very confusing. Just like purchasing white goods, numerous manufacturers, varying prices and advice can be somewhat confusing! Whilst off-course stores stock a larger range of equipment, consider that, potentially, you are going to use the equipment for the next three to five years or even longer, so try before you buy. Golf shops and stores should have a range of demo clubs for you to try. More importantly, make sure you are fitted for your clubs. This means checking your height, physical make-up and also how far you hit the ball and what the trajectory is like. This is where off-course shops can fall down. They let you try equipment in the nets and the net is only 10 metres away from you. This can be misleading, even if they have a computerised test set up. My advice is go to a driving range or a demo golf day at your nearest golf club and get the local professional or representative to take you through a fitting system that can test your make-up and let you try a range of clubs that will be suited to your game.
Try the clubs on the golf course or driving range to get a better feel for the equipment. Things to consider when buying equipment: Have an idea of what you want to spend. Try many clubs before you buy — don’t impulse buy. Try the clubs on the golf course or driving range to get a better feel for the equipment. Once you have purchased your clubs, you will need a golf bag and accessories. Book some golf lessons. Join a golf club, if you haven’t already. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Enjoy your game and see you on course!

It’s easy to eat badly, drink more, fall off your normal fitness routine and stress out. During this season, it is necessary to find balance and alignment. Your Skin Matters with Donna Gordon | Skin House
S.O.S — SAVE OUR SKIN I’m never in the sun; do I still have to wear sunscreen? With summer well underway, sunscreen really is the magic formulation to saving your skin! So wearing sunscreen is necessary? Sure is, if you want to stop the wrinkles forming over the next decades! Think about the last time you were out in the sun. Was it an afternoon at the beach? Playing an outdoor sport or hiking? Working in your garden on a sunny day? How about driving the kids about? Oh, and the 10 minutes two to three times a day hanging out the washing? You are probably getting hit with more ultraviolet (UV) radiation than you know. UVB mainly leads to sunburns and common skin cancers (basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas). UVA causes tanning as well as photoageing in the form of brown spots and wrinkles. Also, UVA passes right through windows, so check the position of your office desk!
Forty per cent of UV rays still reach you even on a cloudy day. Even if you are in the shade on a sunny day, UV rays bounce off all light surfaces (for example, beach sand, concrete and water surfaces). You may feel protected sitting in the shade or wearing a hat but these reflected beams of UV radiation are still hitting your exposed skin. Forty percent of UV rays still reach you even on a cloudy day. Here are three simple tips for guaranteed youthful skin for many decades to come:

1. Protect cosmetically important areas of your skin: face, neck, chest and hands. 2. Use a sunscreen that does the job. Select a sunscreen with titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide to ensure broad UVA and UVB protection. 3. Limit your sun tanning. Self-tan instead. It may seem like a bit of extra effort today but if you follow these simple steps, your friends will envy your youthful glow in decades to come.

HIS PROMISE TO CONNIE: Raise a million dollars for Breast Cancer research - at the time of printing this issue, Samuel accomplished this goal! Raise awareness of the disease that’s killing her - their message is simple: 'Don't fall into the booby-trap, be breast aware!' Break the Guinness World Record for the longest journey on a unicycle - and Samuel is so, so close! (Interview transcribed by Josh Minogue)
FIVE in 5
SAMUEL Johnson What would you do if your sister was terminally ill? Aussie Actor, Samuel Johnson’s sister Connie is dying of Breast Cancer so he’s on an epic challenge riding around Australia on a unicycle! Why Fitness asked Samuel our Five Questions in Five Minutes. Everyone at Why Fitness Magazine thinks Samuel Johnson is a pretty awesome guy, but Sam what are you famous for? I’m famous for being the world’s most determined unicyclist.
SCAN HERE TO WATCH THE WHY FITNESS INTERVIEW WITH SAMUEL JOHNSON
And why is that? Because my sister has breast cancer and we want to take the piss and raise a million dollars at the same time. So how close are you to raising a million dollars? We are $50,000 away. $950,000 is an insane amount. And how many kilometres so far? Roughly 11,484.2km. And what’s the world record? 14,682.6km That’s pretty amazing. How did you get into this? Originally I got into unicycling because I was brought up without a television and I was incredibly bored as a kid, so I picked up some oranges out of the fruit bowl (to juggle) and it went on from there. Who do you want to be when you grow up? Who inspires you? Aaaarrrgh (pauses). I’d say I’d like to be a husband when I grow up…
and the husband of Carrie Bickmore. One day I will mature enough. It’s up to her really — I’m just going to put it out there in the universe and hope it happens one day. When you’re not out unicyling crazy kilometres and raising truckloads of cash for an amazing cause what do you do for fun? I like to drink beer and to play pool (laughs) in between sessions in the gym of course. I’d like to say I do yoga and meditation but I don’t. Beers are a workout — it’s about reps! What’s your why? Why do you do what you do? ‘Cause I can’t think of anything more important to do. That’s five in five with the amazing Samuel Johnson. Stop doing what doesn’t work exercise, using the same, or very similar, equipment, at the same level of intensity, for the same amount of time each week — and they do that for (like, totally) e-v-e-r, despite the fact that change is their goal. And then they wonder why their body isn’t transforming. As with most things in life, if nothing changes, nothing changes.
WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper Circular behaviour Have you noticed how many of us seem to keep doing what doesn’t work, even though we know it doesn’t work and even though we hate where we’re at (physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, financially)? It’s like our emotions get in the way of our intelligence, our objectivity and our common sense. Sometimes it’s like we’re both smart and stupid at the same time — theoretically smart, practically stupid. Sound familiar? Here’s an example… Exercise and all its variables can be classified and quantified in a range of ways. For the sake of relevance and understandability, I break it into two simple groups: 1. the maintenance group 2. the progressive group As the name suggests, following a maintenance exercise plan won’t lead an individual to make any real progress, neither will it see him or her going backwards (physically) at an alarming rate. On the other hand, a progressive approach to exercise is designed and implemented for the sole purpose of creating significant physiological change. That is, to create a measurably fitter, leaner, lighter, stronger, faster, and more flexible body. Curiously, the majority of people in the majority of gyms (consciously or not) employ a maintenance approach to their exercise program. That is, they typically do the same, or very similar, kind of
Some people have been following the same exercise plan for years. Their need to be comfortable, or to do the familiar, is the very thing that stops them from reaching their goals. They want tenout-of-ten results but are only willing to make a three-out-of-ten effort. This principle of doing different to create different is relevant and effective for, not only our bodies and exercise habits, but also (more broadly speaking) for our lives. Sometimes, we simply need to choose between ‘being comfortable’ and ‘doing what’s necessary’ to create lasting change in our world. Have you noticed how long it takes for some of us to catch on to this truth and do something with it? Have you also noticed how long some of us delay the inevitable and avoid the obvious? Some of us are slaves to the habitual, the comfortable, the familiar and the repetitious, no matter how ineffective or even destructive that type of behaviour might be. In other words, we keep doing what doesn’t work. We keep doing what doesn’t produce positive change. We have the same arguments about the same issues with the same people and produce the same less-than-desirable results for… ever. And then we wonder what’s wrong with them and why we keep having these problems. Pfft. We keep using the same weight-loss approach, despite the fact that it didn’t work the last fifty-two times. Hmm. We keep waiting, waiting and waiting for the right time when, all along, the limiting factor has been our fear, not our timing.
magically ‘sort themselves out’. Good luck with that, Mary Poppins. We keep hoping that situations, circumstances and people around us will change, so that we don’t have to. So we don’t have to ‘fix’ the problem. Instead of creating our own opportunities and luck, we tip-toe timidly through life and hope that somehow opportunity will miraculously find us and Lady Luck (whoever she is) will smile on us — such disempowering crap. Closing our eyes, crossing our fingers and hoping things will work themselves out isn’t a great strategy for change. Or for anything positive. Sure, it might kind of work until we’re four but after that… not so much. So… Are you a person who continues to do what doesn’t work in some areas of your life, despite your good intentions? Despite your potential? Despite your frustration? Be brave and honest in your answer. If you are, welcome to the club — it’s a whopper. The healthy and intelligent way to create a healthy and lasting shift in your world is not to beat yourself up but, rather, to move forward from right now in a constructive, practical, logical and unemotional manner. Here are some suggestions: Don’t try to change 50 things at once. It will only end in tears. In the short term, address one or two significant issues, make them stick and build from there. Don’t over-think what you need to do or the changes you need to make. You’ll only find another way to procrastinate, to talk yourself out of taking action and to stay in that behavioural and emotional rut. Thinking: good. Over-thinking: not good. Identify your lead-up patterns (the behaviour and choices that typically precede a problem or a downfall) and create some new patterns.
He who hesitates is lost and he who spends his life waiting becomes a professional waiter.
Identify your non-negotiable behaviours. Specifically, those behaviours that are relevant to your plans, your goals and the change process. Your non-negotiables are the things you’re totally committed to doing, no matter what. If you haven’t identified or articulated them yet, then now would be a good time. It’s your life, so you get to choose your own standards and rules.
We keep avoiding important issues in our world in the hope that they will
Make that decision — the one you’ve been avoiding.

SUNSHINE COAST INDOOR SPORTS Indoor netball, volleyball, cricket, soccer, dodgeball, graded competitions for all levels. ’Tis the season to be jolly but how do we stay motivated during the silly season when the Christmas festivities are so much more enticing? Keeping disciplined and motivated with a regular fitness regime during this hectic time takes commitment and dedication. It’s so easy to become caught up in the celebrations of the holidays and to sacrifice exercise for another Christmas gathering. Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre provides the perfect opportunity to help keep those extra kilos to a minimum during the holiday period by providing sports that require a consistent commitment each week. All of the sports at the centre are team based, so if you’re ever lacking that extra ounce of motivation to burn off that Christmas turkey and stuffing then your team members will help boost your spirits and keep you on track with your fitness goals. Not only is a team sport great for morale, it’s also a great way to stay connected with friends or work colleagues during the summer period. Since its inception in the sporting industry three years ago, Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre has grown from having one registered netball team to 230 teams or 1200 players who participate in mixed or same-sex fixtures, making it the largest indoor sports centre on the Sunshine Coast. Offering netball, soccer and beach volleyball for a range of ages and abilities, the centre has something for everyone. The centre even caters for juniors, providing three afternoons a week for children to participate in an active team sport like indoor netball or soccer. Every sport is graded to ensure that you are participating at your maximum level every time you compete and also to make sure you feel comfortable playing at your desired level. Whether you’re playing socially or competitively, there are various sports on offer that contribute to reaching a healthy mind, body and soul. With moderation and a regular commitment to exercise over the holidays it’s easy to maintain a healthy body. Taking the time to be energised and focusing on goals will ensure that the holiday season is about being with your loved ones rather than feeling guilty about consuming too much naughty-but-nice food! You only live once, so enjoy what you love in moderation.

THE ‘HOW TO’ OF FITNESS, FOOD AND FUN
CHANGING HABITS Changing Habits is passionately committed to improving the lives of men, women and children by providing high quality, ethical foods. One of our favourite products, Inca Inchi Oil, comes from the Inca Inchi plant, native to the Peruvian Amazon region. The oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant. It is a truly beautiful, natural, additive-free, non-refined vegetable oil. It is considered the single richest vegetable source of essential fatty acids, including linoleic omega 6 and alpha-linolenic omega 3. These fatty acids help to form nerve tissue, eye tissue and the structure of cell membranes. They are the precursors of DHA, EPA and GLA, and are involved in the regulation of blood pressure and immune functions. The oil is extracted using techniques that do not alter the nature or the quality of the oil and it has a high digestibility of 96 per cent. Food for thought: Is supplementing with fish oil as good as everyone thinks? Did you know it takes 5kg of fish to make 1kg of fish oil? Changing Habits recommends Inca Inchi oil as a perfect substitute for fish oil, without the aftertaste — perfect in salads and cold dishes (not recommended for heating).

INCA INCHI OIL
Inca Inchi Oil is the ethical, sustainable plant based alternative to fish oil. 86 per cent of this oil is essential fats including 48 per cent Omega-3 and vitamins A and E. No more popping gel caps and burping fish oil. You can now use this delicious healthy Omega-3 oil for your EPA and DHA needs and culinary delights. Use in your favourite dish, including salad dressings, pestos, smoothies and mayonnaise. The Inca Inchi Oil has won gold medals at the European Food Fair for best culinary oil, but its properties go far beyond taste. You can even use it as a skin tonic for repair and healing. The properties of this oil are very rich in nutrients; it is recommended not to be heated.

with Annette Sym HOW TO BALANCE YOUR HEALTH IN THE LEAD-UP TO CHRISTMAS PLAN — Have strategies in place to deal with all the temptations that are around at this time of year. Steer clear of fried food, pastries and creamy dips. Either take a healthy plate or eat before you go to an event. Don’t feel pressured to eat food that you know doesn’t support your health goals. PREPARE — Make time for exercise. To counteract any excess eating, increase your activities so you can balance out the calories. Make time in your diary so you make sure it happens. Don’t forget to drink lots of water so you stay hydrated. Write a menu plan for the week and shop ahead so you are well prepared. PERSIST — Keep focused. Nothing tastes as good as being slim and healthy feels, so don’t let food dominate you any longer. Remember why you are doing this and what you want to achieve. I guarantee that when January arrives you will be so glad you stuck to your healthy regime.

Sports Federation Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards What a difference 25 years makes. The Sport Star of the Year Awards night celebrates its major milestone on 31 January next year. While I was always confident the night would be a success, the committee at the time made two decisions that I believe were the recipe for success. One was hosting the awards at Hyatt Coolum and the second was adding the junior category — the winner was soon-to-be Olympic champion Clint Robinson. While only 95 people turned up for the first night, the awards’ success was helped greatly by the ambience the Hyatt Coolum created. Plus, our local regional TV station, Wide Bay 8, recorded and broadcast the awards the following Sunday morning. Our special guest Wally Lewis also added some class to the night, along with our senior winner, Lisa Curry.

I was lucky to have a committee who believed in the same values and understood the difference between backyard cricket and the Olympic Games. The 1960 water polo Olympian Graeme Sherman supported the everyday sports, while multiple Aussie representative Jack Boast strongly pushed the juniors. We were joined soon after by former state government Sports Director Stan Wilcox, whose input was terrific. Dinner after dinner, the awards night continued to produce world and Olympic champions. The committee remained on track, aligned to its mission statement to ‘promote and foster sport on the Coast’. That direction has never changed and it became stronger when we incorporated in 1999. While our sports stars shone, so too did our special guests Murray Rose, Natalie Cook, Duncan Armstrong, and Premiers Wayne Goss and Peter Beattie. Last year’s guest Matt Golinski stole the show with his surprise appearance. This year’s night will be one of celebration, and I personally thank everyone who has helped me put on the best Awards Night in Queensland. Thank you.

Wrap some UV protective sunglasses around your eyes. Yew! Summer holidays are almost here and by far the best place to hang out is near a pool, river, waterfall or ocean. Summer childhood memories are full of lemonade ice blocks, the smell of sunscreen, building rafts, slip ‘n’ slides and sprinklers followed by hot, stormy afternoons. Spare rooms fill up and towels quickly disappear. To enjoy your day and the next one, Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap: Slip on a shirt (preferably a long-sleeved shirt). Slop on the sunscreen (30+) and re-apply. Slap on a hat. Wrap some UV protective sunglasses around your eyes.
