Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin Contest

Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe’s Sea Salt Caramel Pecan Kringle is in the Top 8 of the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin Contest

Set up as a bracket style contest, Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe competed directly against Bassett Mechanical and won the first round of the Manufacturing Madness Tournament.

On Tuesday, September 26, 2017, the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) revealed the Top 8 Coolest Things Made in Wisconsin on Facebook Live. More than 91,000 votes over eight days determined who would move on to the Top 8. Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe’s Sea Salt Caramel Pecan Kringle advanced to the Top 8 with just over 11,000 votes.

The seven other Wisconsin businesses advancing to the next round include Oshkosh Corporation, Mercury Marine, Kraft Heinz Company, Generac, Sargento Cheese, Trane, and Ariens Company. “As one of the smallest businesses in the competition, we couldn’t be happier to have made it this far, yet we have a long way to

go!” said Mike Vande Walle, owner of Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe. “This contest started with 150 businesses and now 8 remain.” Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe has two locations in the Green Bay area. One is located in De Pere, WI on the east side and the other location is in Suamico, WI. “Our Sea Salt Caramel Pecan Kringle is made with European style butter, filled with crunchy pecan caramel filling, iced, and then topped with homemade caramel, sea salt and pecans,” said Vande Walle. Voting in Round 2 of the Manufacturing Madness Tournament will take place Monday, October 2, 2017 through Friday, October 6, 2017 at madeinwis.com. In this round, Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe’s Sea Salt Caramel Pecan

Kringle is up against Oshkosh Corporation’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. To determine this year’s Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin, product nominations were submitted. A popular vote determined the “Sweet 16” coolest products. The Manufacturing Madness Tournament placed these Wisconsin products in head-to-head battles with the product with the highest number of votes advancing to the next bracket. The Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin will be named on October 16, 2017 at the State of Wisconsin Business & Industry Luncheon. We Are WBA: Member Spotlight Our We Are WBA video series continues with The Cupcake-A-Rhee - a mobile dessert food truck named “Clarence” owned by Ellen Ghere Paulus and Bob Paulus. Their specialty is - you guessed it - cupcakes! They also bake cookies, brownies, and muffins, as well as a limited offering of savory items such as baked pretzels, bread, and stromboli. All of their items are baked from scratch in their commercial kitchen in Port Washington, WI. Here’s the video: https://youtu.be/cQ0W0zVf1FI

We also had the chance to go behind the scenes at Cranky Al’s, a doughnut-coffee-pizza shop in Wauwatosa, WI owned by Joey Carioti and his aunt and uncle - Susie and Al Brkich. Serving hand-cut doughnuts, hot breakfast sandwiches, and coffee in the mornings and pizza for dinner, this family-owned business loves giving back to the terrific community that has supported them from day one. Between the two awards, more than $30,000 has been given to students since our first scholarship program began in 1984.

The WBA offers scholarships as a way to provide financial support for the education of students who will be the future of the Baking Industry. The Scholarship Committee will review completed applications postmarked or submitted online by Friday, December 1, 2017. There is still plenty of time to submit your scholarship application before the deadline!

The WBA has a national scholarship, the Robert W. Hiller Scholarship, available for students pursuing a degree in a baking/ pastry arts-related field that prepares candidates for a retail baking profession. The WBA established the Robert W. Hiller Scholarship to support and encourage people who have demonstrated a passion for a profession in the baking/pastry arts field. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who can best demonstrate this career commitment.

Both scholarship applications are available here: https://wibakers.wordpress.com/scholarships/ All scholarships given through the WBA are awarded without regard to age, sex, race, religion, marital status, national origin, handicap or sexual preference.
