Dear friends of the Widder Hotel The nights are getting longer – and that means it’s high time we once again shift our focus to the upcoming festive period and beyond. Do you prefer tea or champagne? Or does it depend on the time? Can we tempt you with some innovative jazz, or would you prefer a traditional raclette in our “Forest”? Whatever your taste is, our festive calendar has plenty of treats in store to suit them all. Carnivores are sure to go wild for the delicacies in our AuGust restaurant, socialites will hit the dancefloor at the Jingle Ball, and food-lovers will delight in our exquisite Christmas menu. IT’S TEA TIME Afternoon tea is a much-loved custom all around the world, particularly during the winter months. Now, Widder is bringing together the best international tea traditions for you to enjoy, starting with a tasty trip to New York in November. Along with world-class scones and clotted cream, the Big Apple offers cranberry cottage cheese and hearty pastrami sandwiches. In December, we’ll pay our respects to the world capital of tea culture with ‘Welcome to London’. In January, Milan will bring la dolce vita to your tastebuds with San Daniele psociutto and creamy mozzarella, while delicacies from Moscow and Paris will take centre stage in February and March.

WIDDER JAZZ ‘Jingle Bells’ may be a classic song to get you in the Christmas mood, but here at Widder, we’re also huge jazz fans – particularly when the winter evenings draw in. Hot sounds for cold weather, from the exceptional Laila Biali with her only concert in Switzerland to Amina Figarova, celebrated star of the New York jazz scene. If this is what winter sounds like at Widder, it can‘t come soon enough!
Tuesday, 15th November Freddy Cole Quartet Nat King Cole died in 1965 when his brother, Freddy Cole, was 33 years old. Freddy has had a complex relationship with his brother‘s legacy ever since: on the one hand, he can and does not deny its immense influence; on the other hand, it has been a challenge to build a profile of his own. In 1990, Freddy released an album with the unambiguous title, I’m Not My Brother, I’m Me. Now, he has released He Was the King, a clear homage to his brother with a dozen or so songs from his repertoire.

‘She’s exciting and unique, and I admire her talent very much,’ says Sting about Laila Biali, an inspiring singer and pianist. Born in Canada in 1980, she’s since set the world on fire, and is often compared to fellow Canadian Diana Krall. What sets Biali apart is her work with contemporary composers and lyricists, which has made an important contribution to the revival of vocal jazz.
Tuesday, 6th December Amina Figarova Sextet Azerbaijan-born pianist Amina Figarova has caused a stir in the New York jazz scene with her dreamy, at times extremely daring compositions. She had the honour of performing the pieces Pictures and The Traveler for the New Jazz Standards series at the prestigious Lincoln Center. Her rigorous classical training shines through in her incredibly deft touch over the keys and in the melodic richness of her work. Show time: 8 pm
