OUR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY, by Thomi Clinton SELF-MADE MAN When I pre-screened the movie Self-Made man, for the Transgender Arts festival coming up on National Coming Out Day, I must say I never thought about women transitioning to men. I watched this movie, learning how this is done. Growing a beard, making it passable in in clothing, fascinating… It opened my eyes to a different level of respect for FTM’s but I also find that society accepts FTM’s more than MTF’s. 22

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige Shann Carr hosts The (Mis) Match Game The national comedy stage comes to Palm Springs on August 28, as Shann Carr hosts The (Mis) Match Game at Oscars’ bar & grill. This happens Thursday, August 28 at 7 PM, featuring Will Paige, publisher of the DDG (and actor in “Seabiscuit” and recently “The Whitney Houston Story”), and some other folks from the local press. This also finally gives me the opportunity to talk about the other current local press. But that will have to wait until next week’s issue. Because we are the only weekly, the last week of every month has been owned by the DDG for many years. The (Mis) Match Game will pit a panel (in this case, media) against a much smarter local audience to match answers given to a question about local and national celebrities. For example, if the question was “Where is the bulk of YOUR FAVORITE DRAG PRERFORMER’S show budget devoted to,” and you answered lipstick and butt plugs, you might match a celebrity panel member and win! It would also be funny because we all know they get all their lipstick for free from Crayola!
As the self appointed (is there any other way?) reigning king of the local gay media game of thrones, by virtue of the fact we are older than the rest by about 20 years, and since we have never (publicly) bashed the other media, I thought it would be perfect to give a DDG toast to those other media giants that never got a game show with Shann Carr at Oscars. Mike Luke created a company for a phone dating service and many bars asked to be mentioned in the recordings. Later he produced a simple newsletter listing the maps and bars and events. Thirteen years ago, I started at the DDG doing the web site and local delivery. As the saying goes, I liked it so much that I bought the company. We are happy just being the local hometown community newspaper, and there are few like it on earth for the gay community. I, like Mike, will take any call from any member of the community and listen to them. I cannot tell you how much time we have been told to drop this or that in order to get a bigger corporate ad and we have steadfastly refused to cut anyone out, yet we almost always manage to still get the ad. As Mike said, there will come a time when they will understand that we are all inclusive, gay and straight, and every aspect of Continued on page 38

Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Announces 2014 Screening Schedule. Thursday, September 18th; Festival Runs Through through Sunday, September 21st. August 15, 2014, Palm Springs, CA – Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which opens its Seventh Edition on Thursday, September 18th and runs through Sunday, September 21st, today announced the complete Schedule for 2014. “We are screening a total of twenty eight feature films and more than 30 shorts this year,” said Michael C. Green, Cinema Diverse Festival Director and Managing Director of The Palm Springs Cultural Center. “This will be the largest number of feature films we’ve ever screened, and about the same number of shorts that we screened at last year’s festival.” The 2014 opening night film is SAUGATUCK CURES – a great comedy produced and directed by Cinema Diverse Alum Matthew Ladensack, who screened his short film, THE APPLE TREE in 2012. “We are excited to make our World Premiere at Cinema Diverse,” Ladenback says. “We plan to bring as many members of our team as we can to the opening.” SAUGATUCK CURES touches on a number of 28
today’s most compelling issues, including conversion therapy, religious freedom and gay marriage. The film includes stellar performances by Max Alder (Glee, Switched at Birth), Danny Mooney (Ides of March, Whip It) and Judith Chapman (The Young & the Restless). Ms Chapman, who lives in Palm Springs, reports that she is quite excited to see SAUGATUCK CURES make its World Premiere in her hometown. Cinema Diverse continues on Friday, September 19th with a full schedule of films. Screenings begin at 11am at the Camelot Theatres and continue throughout the day, and through the weekend. “We are covering a lot of ground this year,” Green continued. “Not only with the sheer number of films we’re screening, but also with the diverse array of film types. For example, we are screening what I believe is a first for Cinema Diverse in several genres – VIOLENCE OF THE MIND (a horror/thriller filmed partially in Palm Springs), WAITING IN THE WINGS: THE MUSICAL (a classic musical comedy with a new age twist), and THE DARK PLACE (a mystery/thriller from the same team that created JUDAS KISS).” www.camelottickets.com. Passes are on sale now, and individual tickets will go on sale on August 31st To purchase your tickets in-person, visit:Camelot Theatres Box Office 2300 E. Baristo Road, P.S. 760-325-6565

Continued from page 25 the LGBTIQeieio or whatever letters you need to define our gay community we include it. These out and proud gay magazines listed below are closed now, but helped us shape the past and, to a large degree, the preset of our fantastic gay community of Palm Springs and the desert cities. Please share this with your friends so they take a moment to reflect on where we came from as a measure of where we are today. All of us stand on the shoulders of these giants and we will keep their memory alive. For me, I left the lucrative career of software to join the ranks of small time local media and have not regretted a single day since. We still get threats and hate mail but nothing compared to the early days of gay publishing. We still make calls to people who tell us they can’t support a gay business but would love to have “the gays” shop at their location. Don’t you love being called “the gays” by some smug asshole? We start with Bob Hoven – publisher of Megascene, a gay news magazine. I remember the first day I met Bob at Streetbar and told him I was the next owner of the Desert Daily Guide. He laughed and welcomed me warmly to the town he loved, and then I offered to buy him a drink. Continued on page 49

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 A friend is moving up in the world and you’re in for the long haul. Let yourself ride on somebody else’s coattails for a change. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 A dispute at work is more complicated than it looks, so play it by ear. You’ve just begun to scratch the surface of what’s been going on. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 Let an association develop on its own. You and the other party are in no position to make long-term plans although you’d like to one day. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 Let someone else take the credit for what you’ve done. Everyone knows the truth. What you lose in recognition, you gain in cachet.
40
LEO: July 23 - August 22 This is an excellent time to renegotiate a contract or loan. You could wind up with some unexpected money in your pocket. VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 You can still back out if you want to, but what looks like an expensive step will pay for itself weeks from now. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Lately you’ve been streamlining acquaintances. There’s nothing wrong with fraternizing exclusively with people you know are in your corner. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Someone finally gets back to you about an offer. It’s not as much as you hoped, but it makes for a nice start. Let the negotiating begin! SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20
You’re in the stronger position so you don’t have to get high-handed. Simply allude to what you could do and the defiant steps back into line. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 It looks like you’ll finally get what you want after weeks of handholding, coaxing, and cajoling. And it’s definitely worth it. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 An opponent can be just as stubborn as you, but it’s your sincere conviction that winds up giving him moment for pause. PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 You’ll be garnering a win, but not without putting some noses out of joint. You can always offer to help straighten them out again in a couple of weeks.

Continued from page 38 When I returned with his favorite Mai tai, he took the drink and said thanks, who the fuck are you? Seriously, I would put publisher Bob Hoven, one of the founding fathers of Palm Springs Pride and Palm Springs as a Gay destination, at the top. Bob Hoven was awarded many honors by the gay community. BottomLine started in 1983 and was, for many years, the premiere gay publication along with its sister publication Pulp. I should say that I learned most of what Palm Springs is really about by reading the Bottom Line, and it was one of the few magazines that invested its cache into making Palm Springs a premiere gay destination city. The last owner, Rick Saputo, has now moved into the bar business as owner of DiGS bar in Cathedral City. Now, Talk Magazine. To be honest, I invited Michael Gallardo to work for the DDG as a lead salesman after I met him in a bar in the Inland Empire. It was Mike’s (G.) boyfriend (an ex) that introduced him with a very public break up. The boyfriend had a box of mementos for their short but intense relationship. Without skipping a beat, Gallardo grabbed a bar mike and began auctioning off his so-called mementos at the bar. I knew right then he was the one! After a few years, he called in sick saying he had dengue fever while
I was at MySpace. I thanked him for his service and to go for the new magazine, I also told him I comforted his ex for about a week after the bar fight and he congratulated me. So, in gratitude, he took 4 of our employees and the first issue of Talk was so green that it even had an ad that said “mention the DDG for a 10 % discount!” I did not have a choice but to let him go, or he would be the DDG publisher today. It gets stranger. Tackee David Cobbs, (author, the rat) was undoubtedly the voice of Palm Springs for many years. Founder of David, the Bottom Line (his words) and Just magazine. Let’s face it: David was a constant pain in the ass, but somehow he took a liking to me, but I say it was because I was an easy mark. I, along with Todd, developed much of the Tackee Awards and he, in fact, sold off the rights of it to several people, would be my guess. “You fucked up my life,” he would yell at me on the phone, when I did not design the web colors as he wanted. Later, I suspected he would calm down as his health issue took his leg, but not this one. When it caused him pain, he took it off and tossed it in his front yard. His legacy will live on because one night at a bar we were all talking about David and someone said they still had his leg! We all laughed but stopped when he produced it, and now I can testify someone out there has Tackee’s leg, sneaker and all!

Adrian’s Travel Pics San Onofre State Beach This week we toured one of California’s most popular beaches that hosts surfers, swimmers, sunbathers, campers, kayakers, birders, fishermen and bicyclists and me! It has almost 2.5 million visitors per year and it is one of the top five most-visited state parks in California. Whales, dolphins and sea lions can be seen offshore from time to time. This state beach has three distinct areas: the San Onofre Bluffs, the San Mateo Campground and the San Onofre Surf Beach. Sufs UP!

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Jersey’s Journal
famous for a HOT minute.
I’m such an honest person (within reason) that I forget others go out of their way to make things up about themselves or others. Lies to make business deals or to get what they want. It’s really disgusting. That’s why I left Hollywood. I was too lazy to f*ck and manipulate people. I’ve had people work weeks to get me to leave a show so they could run it. I said take your petty little show. No skin off my penis. And yet I am still working with smart people and not losers. I win! It doesn’t take much energy to just be a decent person, but we as a world, are so far away from decent.
What is worse is when you take your life decisions from a reality star. Someone with absolutely no talent that gets a camera pointed at them and they get told what to do and act it out like monkeys. And their back story is stupid. I make moonshine, I’m rich, I’m a drunk so living in a house with hot people with make for great footage, I need my 15 minutes of fame from my past fame in the 80’s!
We don’t have minds of our own. We are very easily influenced by television, movies, Hollywood, the news & Scientology. XTina has gained weight, and we care! It’s considered film worthy, filming quality information that makes us worry about our own asses. We have to buy this drink or that brand of clothes because some 20 year old girl who is starring on a TV show is, and in 15 years she’ll be giving hand jobs by the studio she was
Look up the word role model in the dictionary. I’m not 100% sure of the meaning of the word role model, but if you decide yours is someone who doesn’t know when to stop with the cosmetic surgery, drinks regularly and pulls out their friends’ hair every Saturday night, then good luck in life! I’ll bet you’ll become successful! Honestly! Peace, Love, & Honesty, Jersey See schedule page 4 Image and Photo by James Cesena / The iMiJ Factory

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander For all folks on “Obamacare..Aka, the Affordable Care Act, including Medical, who now have for the first time had proper medical coverage in our lives...Get everything done, you need to get done now..every check up, every procedure. Warning!!! We might just lose it in the near future If Nate Silver is correct (the man who has correctly predicted several elections now)..the dumb Southerners are going to elect six Republican Senators and take over the Senate. The Republicans will have both houses. If that is not bad enough, Democrats may not vote in November, and then we are all screwed. So now, we are going to reward the very people who put our country into a tailspin in the first place is beyond my comprehension. We will be rewarding the very people who shut down our government costing us billions, made all of those home foreclosures possible and stood by and watched all of those American families lose their homes, want to start wars in plac-
es we should not be, who want to eliminate Social Security, cut veteran benefits, roll back the minimum wage, and stop our medical care. 10.3 million people screwed. And all those 10.3 million people would have to do is vote. If you have moved, or you have become 18 before November 5, you need to register. Our nation will be fixed if we get to the polls or vote by mail. Go to www.sos.ca.gov. and register now. Election day is just a couple months away..Nov 4. Cheers.
