PSYCHOLOGICALLY SPEAKING by Mark Jeremy Trybulski Dear PS: My husband and I recently allowed my brother-in-law to move in with us, even though we cannot stand him. He constantly is being rude to me and disruptive to our household. He and his boyfriend play music very loud late into the night and watch movies that blast through his surround sound. Unfortunately, we can only afford the rent with his help for now, but we are in the process of looking for another place without him. He makes me so mad. I hide in my room to avoid him and I am constantly cleaning up his messes around the house when he leaves for work at night. My husband sides with me, but he works most of the day, so I am alone with brother-in-law-dearest all day and he is driving me crazy. Any suggestions before I lose my mind? Signed, Frustrated Dear Frustrated: Have you ever thought that your brother-in-law is fucking with you because he knows it gets you riled? I think he knows exactly what he is doing and, unfortunately, you are feeding right into it. It is the classic concept of the bully mentality. The bully only picks on someone because they feel insecure about themselves and want to make someone else feel worse. The trick is for the person being bullied to not react and therefore not give the bully what he craves; the bully will eventually go away. This may give you a sense of control over something for which you feel there is 18
none. When I was younger, I was picked on mercilessly in my school for being the skinny sissy boy. Every time they put a pen in my chair and I sat on it, I would react and they would howl. Finally, it occurred to me to not react and they had no idea what to do after that. I kept it up a couple more times when they tried something and they finally went away (probably to find someone more susceptible to their bullying). You will find that as you go through life, bullies are everywhere; they don many guises. The trick is to identify them and their antics. Their primary goal is to find ways to puff themselves up into something bigger than they really are; an image that only exists in their unhealthy imagination. Don’t help them by sacrificing any of your energy.
Mark Jeremy Trybulski is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California (MFC53284). He has a private practice in Palm Springs, in addition to conducting internet therapy that reaches nationwide.

OUR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY, by Thomi Clinton the person’s name for their proCALLING A TRANSGENDER noun—it brings color back to the ‘DUDE’ SOME TRANS-101 As I walked into the entrance of a structure of the English language store, my hair was down, I heard a loud voice directed to me. “Dude! You registered to vote?” In the Transgender community using the word ‘Dude’ to connect to a M2F Transgender is horribly abusive language. It expresses that you’re a ‘Dude.’ The same as the Bro, Stud, Homeboy and etc. It’s really easy when in question ‘ask’ and unsure one can substitute 22

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige I can honestly say that cooking at home or eating seems cheaper these days than buying at a grocery store. Mostly because it’s like they are playing tricks to make us spend and waste more. We have the best dining valley wide, while grocery stores have become like soulless corporate vampires. Why is that? There is about one big supermarket every 10 blocks around the valley, so I would say they are winning their war against us. I used to work in software data collection, consulting for a corporate food distribution, and it’s a very big business. They really care about the consumer. In fact, one might say that’s all they care about. Not the way the food is procured or handled or even repackaged or safety; instead, they care about you as the shopper, not the person, even to the point of playing depressing music to make you feel bad and trigger emotions that make you hoard and buy more than you need. They know so much about your buying habits that they spend all day, week after week, testing ways to get you to buy more of what you don’t need, and at higher prices. However, there are ways to use their strategy against them and it does not generally involve they coupon scheme
or Extreme Coupon clipping. But first, we have to learn their game. And if everyone plays it correctly, they too will come in line. Remember, it’s not them verses us in some fair fight for your earnings. It’s just them, planning, conniving and plotting against us. The way they market to us, who and how they set up the floor plan and even when they create longer lines than necessary to keep you captive longer, is all part of their scheme. In fact, if you ever felt trapped in the supermarket and asking why you just bought all that unnecessary stuff, it’s because they got you. They used you, and they spit you out to the parking lot. A recent study showed that Americans spent $151 per week on food (per household) with an estimated $40.00 worth will become wasted food or still sitting around as you plan your next assault on the food chain. In days of old, when we killed our food, it was a lot easier than going up against an army of scientists, psychologists and con-artists that make up the corporate culture of supermarkets. And yes, I was a corporate hound once. We used to call ourselves the pirates, as I would swoop down on Continued on page 38

Continued from page 25 San Juan or Italy and help them pass the rigid FDA validation tests based on what I learned at a US pharmaceutical company. That all started when I was approached outside the office of Digital Equipment as a young software engineer, like some secret spy deal, but that’s a different story. However, the Food Marketing Institute and the Point-of-Purchase Advertising Institute have found that about 60% of what people buy in supermarkets wasn’t on their list in the first place. Because they are in the game to take your money, they give you rotten tomatoes and laugh in your face. Look at the 99 cent store, everything actually cost 99.99 cents. Even the sign was changed to show a big 99 cents and a very small .99 cents. Then they sell milk at 2.99 because “we asked them to stock it,” but I never asked, so who is the idiot that asked the 99 cent store to stock milk at a price higher than the convenience store? They have even tricked us out of one lousy penny, but often you are buying things for 99.99 cents that you could get elsewhere for 39 cents! While I am at it, the convenience is not that convenient when I need to work longer hours to afford their prices. I say all

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 There are benefits of maintaining decorum. Let everyone retreat to their separate corners. They’ll reconvene after they’ve cooled off. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 You can never tell what new surprise a loved one will spring on you. Hopefully it’s pleasant, as you’ve had enough of the other kind. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 It’s hard to revisit game plans in midstream, but the terms that you agreed to weeks ago no longer apply. It’s time to either change the rules or look for a new game. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 A debt that you’ve been dreading finally rears its ugly head. But don’t cower. It’s not as unmanage-
40
able as you initially feared. LEO: July 23 - August 22 Time ushers in a different kind of friendship. Or at least puts a new twist on an old one. It’s not something that you will soon forget. VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 You’ll soon have cause to celebrate not getting what you want when you learn that you narrowly escaped a debacle in the making. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Is a certain someone really in a position to open doors? Or is this person just leading you on? Don’t waste time speculating. Ask. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Count to ten before answering people’s requests. You’ve been bombarded with a lot of demands lately and your exasperation is beginning to show.
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20 Fine-tuning is OK but don’t go overboard. You could hobble progress by getting too fixated on trivialities. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 Respond immediately to any communication that you receive by net or post. It’s an amazing opportunity and the window will only stay open for an instant. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 Though pushed to the breaking point, you’ll continue with a certain relationship. You’ve been through too much to call it quits. All work and no play something something. PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 Don’t lean too heavily because friends can only shoulder so much emotional weight now.

this at the risk of losing potential advertisers (not really, let’s face it; supermarkets may show up at Pride but these store have their own marketing strategies, exploiting missing and exploited kids to get mailers in your home each week with cheap milk and chicken).
the beer and chips and dip and other unnecessary luxuries are at hand’s reach in sizes that are not too heavy but sized at the best price for them. Remember, they stacked the shelf in their favor, not ours. If you ever feel like you’re running all over the store to get a few essentials, it’s because they want you to feel like that.
So let’s look at some common tricks these pirates of the food ocean hit us with every week to turn a quick stop into a $50.00 unnecessary buying spree.
For those of us that can remember, shopping carts are not bigger to give homeless people more space, they are three times bigger and in most cases are designed to think you have not bought very much. Research marketing consultants are proud to say that when the shopping carts were doubled in size, customers spent, on average, 40% more. Yeah, them!
Starting with shiny fruit & vegetables, which are nearly always in sight when you walk into a supermarket, because the apples are washed, waxed and hand rubbed every morning because even straight people are attracted to bright and shinny things. This process actually rots the produce faster, but no matter, with its bright lighting and artistic display. It’s going to open your wallet. Next time think of the real process of how those grapes of someone’s wrath come to market. The human suffrage alone will make you think twice
Longer lines with many unmanned checkout stands; this trick makes us willing to shop longer, or look more at the inquire magazine and other marked up items like a convenience store places soda drinks, candy, and these evil bastards toss our own kids under the bus with their toy aisles at kids’ eye level.
Next up, the science of shelf stocking, So next time you think of the elderly, and you cannot ask the ones actually consider eggs and milk, our staples, stocking the shelves because even they are at the back of the store and making are kept out of the loop on this one. The these poor people walk the 300 feet into products on the right, where most of us a maze of strategically placed aisles that grab from, are often the consumables change direction often just to get a lousy you usually buy in small quantities, but jug of milk. THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander A good friend, who is educated, charming and positive, just told me that he is frustrated with all politics. So much so that he may not vote anymore because of the frustration. I agree that this stuff can be frustrating. I told him my advice, which is this: yes, I think many folks are frustrated. The reality is that if we all stop voting, we will soon be living out “Game of Thrones.” Frustrated? Yes, I am frustrated, but we have to stay tuned to all of our public officials - city, county, state and national. We are the deciders! But if we stop, all of the work of folks like Martin Luther King Junior, Harvey Milk, John Kennedy, and thousands who have fought will disappear, and that will be our legacy. Be mad, frustrated and pissed off, but never give away your right to make a difference! Mother Teresa said it well. “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”
William Simon said it well, as well. “Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who do not vote.” And Pericles, way back in the day, said “just because you do not take an interest in politics, does not mean that politics won’t take an interest in you!”
