FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige Another beautiful week in the desert cites has come and gone, and I am looking forwards to another great week. The new format of the magazine is so much fun to work with and I appreciate the great feedback we have gotten so far. We are looking forward to doing more around town pictures, so if you would like to have your event recorded with some fun pictures, let us know. We are also delivering out of town again, so don’t be surprised if you see us at your next vacation to L.A. or San Diego.

The Desert is getting busier, and the snow bunnies from all over the world are visiting us. It looks like this year we are ready for them. I cannot remember a time when there were so many great offerings for the gay community to eat drink and stay happy. If you’re looking for recommendations, check out all that’s new and changed recently, starting with Oscar’s bar and grill on Tahquitz across from the equally-famous Pinocchio restaurant and the soon-tobe-open Legends of Palm Springs. Legends is set to open within a few weeks. This is the first newly-built bar that I can remember, and if you peak into the windows you can see it will be an elegant, upscale bar. The owner, Gregg, has put a lot of work and effort into getting this ready. We are also happy to see the Clinic bar doing so well, and it was a brilliant move locating next to the former Zozo, the Hard Rock Hotel. I know many Hollywood friends that are staying there this week, and they have told me they discovered this great bar right down the street with an eclectic mix of gay and straight live bands and a cool atmosphere. The north end is also growing again, and now Toucans is not the only place with the addition of WorkOut gym and a new edition of toy/gift store call Not So Innocent. This store should be open by the time this goes to print, and will be a must-see. From

what I can tell, it complements our other stores very nicely. Don’t forget, Chaps Inn is walking distance, so you can compliment a great and interesting North end vacation. There is a great new reason to go to the Sun Center now that Heaven is gone. It still exists, but in a great store called Block Party. Owner Larry Block, who also has a store on the strip in Boy’s Town/WeHo, is also running for the West Hollywood town council as a very committed LGBT rights advocate and sponsor of the LGBT community. Block Party is a great bet for clothes, not just for the twink in you but as the averaged size man you are. If there is a twink growing inside you, though, then you better get there quick, if you get my drift. Heading up the valley, we have the all-new Barracks and Level 2 running at full steam, with some of the best in drag from Rapture, hosted by Marina Mac. Get ready to see the Barracks’ new addition, also known as the Big Room or the Webster! If you’re looking to play in Cathedral City this week, Level 2 and that Barracks are a good bet. Afterwards, you can head over to Hidden Joy books and video, or sleep one off at CCBC, the largest gay resort in Southern California. Let’s not forget that all of the art and entertainment found in the DDG. The free groups and what’s happening are paid for by our advertisers. We do recognize that the DDG only exists because of our loyal readers and new and long term advertisers, so if you would like to thank us for our service to the community, there is no better way than to visit our advertisers and let then know you read about them in the DDG. On behalf of the great staff of the DDG, past and present, we thank you with all of our heart, and will continue to look for ways to pay it forward.

Will Paige is publisher and owner of the DDG. He has extensive experience as a software engineer for Toyota, Experian, MySpace, and others. E-mail him your love letters, hate mail, marriage proposals and general queries at publisher541@desertdailyguide.com

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Well, it’s that time of year, and unlike my legs on a non show day, love is in the air. Yep, Valentine’s Day. That time of year when we take our loved ones to a fancy restaurant or buy them flowers and candy or gifts as a symbol of our love. I, once again, will be alone. Well, except for a box of chocolates and my right hand. Actually, I love being single. I don’t have to speak for anyone but myself, and of course my dog, Mr. Smokey. You could say he runs the Shore household.

I’m going to continue to sound like a Negative Nelly even more. I see Valentine’s Day, or VD, (coincidence?) as another commercial money-making scheme. If you are fortunate enough to celebrate Valentine’s Day, may I suggest you show your love with a handmade gift or just by spending time together making more memories. It is a day for romance and love. As far as I know, love should never have a price tag on it. Peace, Love & VD,

I think I am confusing wanting Jersey a partner for an occasional blow job. I’m human and I have needs. Throw a drag a bone. Pun very intended. Plus, chocolate just make you gain weight and you know gay and fat don’t mix well together.

Jersey Shore is a drag performer, and can be seen every Saturday at Marina Mac’s Rapture, 9pm, at Level 2, at Bella da Ball Dinner Revue at Azul 7:30pm, and at CCBC on February 15th for Presidents Day Weekend. Contact her at Dragapalooza@aol.com.

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21-April 20: LEO: July 23-August 22: Two wrongs don’t make a right. Three or four wrongs and it’s five to ten in Chino. TAURUS: April 21-May 19: If you see a burning building and hear odd screams, don’t go inside. It might be the Green Goblin! Am I the only one that remembers the first Spider-Man? GEMINI: May 20-June 21: You’re a big mess. Seriously man. Get on that and fix it! CANCER: June 22-July 22: I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this new invention. It’s called underwear. Put it on!

40

Running down a dream is a good Tom Petty song. Running down a storm drain is just crazy, guy. VIRGO: Aug. 23-Sept. 22: It’s recommended that you sleep for eight hours a night. So do that. You’re seriously cranky too much. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - Oct. 22: If time was meant to stop, we’d have timestopping stopwatches! SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21: The cowboy is a noble profession. Hats, horses and sunsets. But you’re a million years old. Not gonna happen, bub.

SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20: For the last time: just because you own a samurai sword does not make you a samurai! CAPRICORN: Dec.21-Jan. 19: I bet you think you’re so smart. What with your education and your books. I can read too, you know! AQUARIUS: Jan 20-Feb. 18: “Break a leg” is used instead of “good luck” for plays for reasons I’ll never understand. PISCES: Feb. 19 - March 20: If you think today is tough, wait until you go through the next thirty years of life. Oooh boy, you’re in for it now.

RECIPE CORNER

RED VELVET PANCAKES

Ingredients: 2 cups All-Purpose Flour 1/2 cup Cocoa Powder 1 cup Powdered Sugar 1/2 tsp Baking Powder 1/2 tsp Salt 1/2 tsp Baking Soda 1 1/2 cups Buttermilk 2 Eggs 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar 3 tbsp Red Food Coloring Sift all dry ingredients except granulated sugar. Mix eggs, buttermilk, granulated sugar and red food coloring and add dry ingredients to wet ingredients in thirds. Do not over-mix! Sweet Cream Cheese Butter Ingredients: 1 cup Butter, softened (2 sticks) 1 8oz pk Cream Cheese, softened 3 cups Powdered Sugar 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

COOK’S NOOK We’ve talked about building your spice supply up for the envy of your peers, but now it’s time to take a look at what you’ll be using to actually prepare and cook your food. Do a quick survey of your pots, your pans, and other utensils. Are the pans scratched? Are the pots rusted and fading? Are your plastic spatulas melted by the heat? Does your whisk no longer whisk properly? A cook is not only judged by the quality of his meals, but by the tools he uses to make those meals. You don’t have to go crazy from the on-set, but slowly replace those items that are worn and becoming less useful as the day goes along. Over time, it’ll be worth it.

With an electric mixer, whip butter and cream cheese together for 3-5 minutes until smooth. Add vanilla extract and the powdered sugar, one cup at a time until blended. Visit us at desertdailyguide.com and Like us on Facebook.com/desertdailyguide
