THIS WEEK With Will Its time for the Sumer edition. As you can see, we have reverted back to our heavier paper. However, the print quality is now the same, but the paper is heavier and feels a lot better than news print. The only other changes are in the fact that the summer edition is smaller, but has all of the same information. As a cost cutting measure, we had considering closing for the summer, but we feel that our major advertisers deserve better. At the same time, we are acknowledging that, like global change, we are soon to be impacted by the internet. Yes, it may be true; the internet is not going to be a passing phase. We are also starting a crowd funding program to buy in-house printing equipment, so there will be one place that has no issues with LGBT printed matters, I need not say anymore. Last year, we spent over $80k on printing cost alone and never less than $60k a year since I have been in charge, and still, no can argue that the DDG does not still have a decent internet presence, which we spend less than $1000 a year to maintain, so it’s not that difficult to do that math. Internet devices are plentiful and so much easier to use, and not just handy, but clearly will be so fully integrated with the future that print will be all but forgotten in 10 or 15 years. This older generation, including the likes of myself, will no longer have a need for any earthly device beyond the Ouija board. But it’s actually more than that, because these new devices are so much more fun to use and to watch evolve. When I came here 20 years ago, I was already developing touch screen kiosks, and put them all over Southern California. But at that time people were still afraid to touch them out of fear of breaking them, and equally afraid to have others know what they were watching or doing. The question for me became, okay, you made the magazine, and are only one of two locals, and the only weekly one. What next? It was on my mind when I started the development on the newly released Android Studio, released this year.

This year, or more accurately this summer, I decided to look around at digital. Now, I don’t mean some business directory and a few hundred rack cards to promote it. I made some strategic investments in marketing, not just to gauge the effectiveness but to curate who and how people are using the internet. The results might surprise you. I can assure you most of our current readers are not heavy internet users and would be underserved if we closed for the summer. But the basic information is that it’s a great time to be in business right now, because there are valid ways to validate every dollar spent on digital advertising while print, radio and TV remain stable but not necessarily climbing. And that’s a lot, as the Desert Daily Guide sells out every week, month after month for 20 years. It’s a magazine that tells us that, yes, some things can remain untarnished. But it is still a bit tarnished, and by the very technology I helped to build for 35 or so years. And I watch and watch as the numbers change, and the value of print goes way up for some and way down for others. Even that new printing method we tried could not help us turn that corner. Also, if you hand your printing jobs over to a company that only prints, then they are just going to continue to eat away at your core profits. So as we slide our marketing mixers to gain a larger share of the digital community, this message is to inform everyone that the DDG will remain in print for as long as an audience remains receptive to its maps, resorts, bars, gay friendly services, and others that really and truly want to reach and support the gay community. And if you ever find that you cannot find a DDG, call us. We will have one waiting for you.

LEATHER REALM by Dave Murdock As you read this Clifton Tatum, Mr. Palm Springs Leather 2015, will be on his way to Chicago to compete in the International Mr. Leather Contest. Cliff has done a fantastic job so far, raising around $9000.00 for his youth-oriented LGBT charities, and he’s only half way through his title year! Have a great time in Chi-town Cliff, Palm Springs is rooting for you! In Part 1 of this series I talked about responsibilities of a Top/Dominant to your submissive/bottom/boy and in Part 2 I began a discussion on how to have a great time in a scene. This week we’ll pick up where I left off, with, arguably, one of the most important aspects of play (and probably life too).  Communication! There’s two ways to communicate, the obvious way is verbally. Talk with the sub/ bottom/slave/pup/boy and LISTEN to what they are saying. Make sure it’s what THEY are saying and not what you want to hear. Before you start a scene find out what they are expecting out of it. The worst thing that can happen is that they are expecting a mild bondage scene and end up getting a heavy flogging. Talk about turning someone off to the experience forever… And you can do this in the course of conversation, making it hot and steamy if you want to, it’s part of the fun. The discussion doesn’t have to be dry and clinical. One very important thing to find out is if they have any physical or mental limitations. Before you do an electrical scene

it might be nice to know if they have an implanted TENS unit or a pacemaker. Likewise you may need information about childhood trauma’s. If, for example, someone had been trapped in a chimney for 8 hours when they were a child, unable to move and scared silly, you may not want to start off with a bondage scene. You may not find out the mental issues until during or after a scene, so you have to be prepared for anything to happen. And, finally remember that communication goes both ways. You have a responsibility to communicate to your play partner also. If they ask you to do something and you’re not comfortable doing it, for whatever reason, you have a perfectly right to say NO. OK, so talking is the easy part. One thing you will probably have to train yourself on is non-verbal communication. Learn to watch body language. One of my favorite “tells” is the toes and fingers, are they clenched or open? Are they curling in pain or ecstasy? You have to learn the difference, virtually with everyone you play with, because no two people are alike. But the more you do it the easier it becomes. It’s not extremely difficult unless you’re dealing with a stoic. Their mind set is “I will not flinch, I will stand/ sit/lay here and take anything that’s dished out.” Many times they think that’s what the Top expects, but I’ll tell you something, it makes the Top’s job very hard, and it also gets boring quickly. Let me see your physical reaction so I can gauge what I’m doing, and the same goes for verbal reaction. You can also check in by touchContinued on page 41

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore You’re so vain, I bet you think this article is about you. It’s amazing how full of themselves people are, that they assume anything written is about them. I write about experiences I have and lessons I have learned. I come across various people in my life and have lived over 40 years . Vanity is not a becoming quality for a person, yet you continue to do so. Confident is a better word, and yes, there is a difference between the two. Do I really need to spell it out? For your sake, I will. Vanity, in a nut shell, is ego. You think your shit doesn’t stink. It does, and I can smell it from here. Confidence; accepting who you are and all, your qualities, good and bad. Most of who we are is genetic, like skin color, height, eye color, sexual orientation. Those are things we have no real control over. Some hit the genetic lottery with good looks and a killer matabolism, but that is all exterior. It’s what is on the inside that should be confident about. If you are a vain butthole, the good thing is that you can change that! You can grow a heart and get over yourself. Learn from a life lesson. Change into a human being. Unlike your shoe size, you can’t change, but you can change internally. What a concept! I would rather live a low-key happy life instead of a back stabbing Hollywood life. I decided that after my first Hollywood job. As much as entertaining is

life to me, happiness and contentment and HONESTY is more important to me. I can leave this earth knowing that I was a good person and the people who liked me, liked me for me, and I tried my hardest to be a good person. No human is perfect and good always dominates bad. Fame and fortune is one thing, but in the end, if you are a vain douchebag, in the long run you get a bowl full of shit. When I leave this earth, I will always be known for being a crazy, pot smoking drag performer. Even though I am more than that, I am good with that, as long as you add honest and good person, and then my job on earth is complete. Peace, Love, and Confidence, Jersey

ing your partner. Check the pulse rate (make believe your restraining his wrist) and the skin temperature (especially around any area that’s restricted, like wrist and ankle restraints.) Finally, listen to the sounds they’re making. Are they moans of pleasure or screams of agony, it’s not always easy to tell. OK, I hear you ask (I have very good hearing), when does the communication stop? And the honest answer is certainly not during a scene, and not for a while afterwards while they get their feet back on the ground, and the endorphins have time to dissipate. And guess what, it may never stop. Your sexual relationship may have ended, but if you’ve had a serious relationship with a boy/slave/ bottom/whatever, the paternal relationship may never end. You will always (unless you screw up) be looked to for guidance and advice, and that’s as it should be. Even if it’s just a one-night stand, you’ve taken on a responsibility (there’s that pesky word again) and it’s one that you should not shirk lightly. I have played with several partners over the years that started out as just fun one-nighter’s, but became something much more because my partner had a breakthrough during play. One of the most memorable was a long-time

AT THE THEATRE Desert Rose Productions The Little Dog Laughed (Now Until May 17, 2015)

boy of mine who dissolved into tears during a flogging session because he connected with the fact that one of the reasons his relationship with his father didn’t work was because he didn’t trust him not to spank him within an inch of his life. And the slow build up of a flogging scene triggered that realization. And guess what, the scene stopped, we went to bed where we cuddled and talked for hours, and we became extremely close. If I had just bulldozed my way through the flogging that never would have happened, and may have turned him off to flogging forever, maybe even to the entire Leather scene. So, stop, look, touch, listen. Believe me you’ll be glad you did.

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 20 - April 18: Technicalities aren’t things to be ignored. A snag could turn into something much more complicated if left unaddressed. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19: That guy who let you down tries wooing you back. Tell him thanks, but no thanks. You’ve been through this yo-yo affair too many times and you don’t need the empty emotional calories.

THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander On May 13, AJR 16, authored by Assemblymembers Richard Bloom, Eduardo Garcia and Evan Low and sponsored by Equality California, was introduced in the State Assembly in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new blood donor guidelines that continue to discriminate against gay and bisexual men. The new proposed FDA guidelines would continue to prohibit blood donation from all sexually active gay and bisexual men. Specifically, all men who have had sex with another man within the past 12 months would be prohibited from donating blood. The resolution calls on President Barack Obama to encourage the Secretary of Health and Human services to direct the FDA to develop science-based guidelines that focus on risk-assessment of individuals instead of the arcane and discriminatory standards that continue to discriminate against gay and bisexual men.

“We are extremely disappointed that the FDA continues to pursue a path of pretend reform. Equality California stands alongside and thanks Assemblymembers Richard Bloom, Eduardo Garcia and Evan Low in urging the FDA to repeal its current blood donation guidelines that continue to stigmatize and discriminate against gay and bisexual men,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “The proposed one-year deferral policy still prohibits all sexually active gay and bisexual men from giving blood based on their sexual orientation. So a gay man who has repeatedly tested negative for HIV and who is in a monogamous relationship is prohibited from giving blood, while others who engage in high risk behaviors are allowed to donate. This is simply unfair.

The FDA should change course and do the hard work to develop risk-based blood donation policies based on modern science and individual behavior.” “The 12 month deferral policy for gay and bisexual men to donate blood is ridiculous and not even based on science,” said Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. “Our resolution is about equality and that every single Californian should be treated fairly when donating blood to help save lives.” Equality California has advocated that the FDA replace antiquated blood donation guidelines that focus on sexual orientation with modern science-based guidelines that focus on risk factors associated with individual behavior. Outside of the United States, countries like Spain, Italy, Russia, Mexico and Portugal have adopted blood donation policies that utilize assessments of risk of an individual’s behavior, instead of the sex of a person’s sexual partners. “These guidelines would continue to prevent countless gay and bisexual men from making life-saving donations to the nation’s blood supply,” continued Zbur. “Equality California is redoubling its efforts to change this unfair policy, and we thank Assemblymember Bloom, Garcia and Low for standing with us and for their important leadership.” Do not forget to register to VOTE for the Palm Springs City elections, every Thursday in front of LULU. Join us at Palm Springs VillageFest every Thursday
